Headless initial booting

Hello everyone I'm looking into the possibility of building a headless amd64 box. Said box would have its own hard disk and communicate to the outside world via Ethernet. Question: How would I configure it initially? Could it boot off a windows box the first time and then suck up an entire image from the windows system, format the hard drive and put the image there for future booting? Has anybody attempted this? I can't really state the whole box is slow, just the some of the X related stuff. These are slow, but tolerable only because the graphics look good. I haven't had a chance to dig around yet (it's only been up a couple of days). So, I'm going to hazard a guess about a driver (or drivers) being an issue. Specualtion: it might be the driver for the ATI X300 since what I'm experiencing is gui related. I've seen complaints about the newer ATI cards/chipsets and Linux on various lists. I'll have a chance to check it out tonight. If it turns out to be the ATI, this'll be the first and last thing I buy with an ATI if it isn't easily fixed. John

System slow after upgrade to 10...

Hello, I recently upgraded to OpenSuse 10 and my system is running very slow. I cannot figure out why. I checked the processes with top and did not see anything out of the ordinary or any processes using 100% CPU usage. Typing is very slow, startup is slow etc...what should I check? System: Acer Ferrari 4005 AMD64 Turion 1 gb mem ddr400 100 gb 5400 rpm hdd etc... Kyle

Trouble installing SLES 9 on Tyan 2895

Hello, We're trying to configure a K8WE / 2895, SCSI version, to run SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 in 32 bits (not 64). 1. First thing we did was upgrade the BIOS to 1.01 and configure BIOS so that OS=Linux; also disable both MAC bridges. 2. Then installed SLES 9 with no problem (however, SATA drives are seen as hde and hdg --funny, no SCSI installed for now) 3. Installed latest nvidia drivers for the chipset from nvidia's site; reconfigured network cards to use nvnet. 4. Then installed application software (specifically IBM WebSphere, since this is a development workstation, and WebSphere is supported on SLES 9). 5. Eveything is fine for a few days, computer is always on, but after a while, the system will just hang. Nothing can be done; only course of action is to turn off machine (data lost!!) Apparently this happens when there is a lot of network traffic (as when downloading large files). So we figured we might want to upgrade the BIOS. We installed 1.01T (beta). Problem with this approach is that SLES sees all memory, but only one CPU. We're quickly approaching our deadlines; other WS on the team (all Tyans 2875) work w/o a problem. Any suggestions? java quiz

Hello everyone: I'm using a sevice called Lavalife to find my next true love. One of Lavalife's features is an online chat program using java. On my laptop I have both Windows XP Home and SuSE 9.3 (64-bit mode). Recently I downloaded java 5.0 (I think) and successfully installed it under windows so the chat program works properly. However, under Linux, I can't see the text I'm typing until I hit the 'enter' key. There are some small marks in the 'text box' but nothing readable appears until it goes into the chat window. I went to java.com and downloaded: jre-1_5_0_02-linux-amd64-rpm.bin I followed the install instructions and everything seemed to work OK. When I tried to 'confirm' the install from the java.com site (verify installation), it did find my java runtime environment but said it wasn't the latest flavor. It was, however, the latest flavor in the Linux lineup. Even with java installed, the invisible text problem still exists. Did I do something or not do something? Any help greatly appreciated. "Stretched" output from Acrobat Reader

Hello everybody. On my Compaq Presario 3240 laptop (which has a wide screen), Acrobat images appear stretched along the horizontal (wide) axis of the screen (wrong aspect ratio). I do NOT see this problem with any other graphics output; the aspect ratio of the icons on the desktop is fine, etc., EXCEPT when I view an image in Acrobat Reader. Although I am not absolutely certain, I think this started happening after I updated Acrobat Reader through YOU recently. Any suggestions? TIA. CF

Mark, That seems odd. Which of the 2 SATA controllers are you using? One of them is affected by the over clocking of the system, and the other is not. I don't recall off the top of my head which controller, but it was ports 3 and 4 on the MSI NEO-2 Platinum mother board. I had my AMD64 3200+ (single core, 2.0 GHz) over clocked to 2.7GHz running the stock PIB heat sink/fan and it was very stable under 9.3. At 2.7GHz encoding my CDs and a number of other apps where faster when on the CPU, obviously the disk reads/write were the same speed as my hard drive didn't change. I was running 2 WD 2500JD's in a software RAID 0 configuration. So the I/O speed was very acceptable for anything I was doing on the desktop. -Alain P.S. My current overclock CPU freq.=216 -> DDR 433 RAM freqz=200 ( 1/1 ratio) Dram relaxed as 2.5-3-3-5 CPU voltage 1.4->1.425 volts this gives 2.59 Ghz, 5.25 Ghz/s bandwidth With the above oc, Apps load noticably faster. memtest86 predicts the numbers quite well before I get to WinXP and test with Sandra. no ACPI support for the 2nd CPU?

Regarding AMD64 and 3d.

Hi. I'm pretty new with suse and linux. It was easy to setup Suse 10.0, but I have some problems with 3d support with my Radeon 9800 XT card. (I have the Abit KV8 MAX3 motherboard) I have downloaded the ATI driver (ati-driver-installer-8.16.20-x86_64.run) and did run the fglrxconfig, and got a new xorg.conf file but It did not give me 3d or high resolution that I wanted. I managed to insert some new modelines to get the resulotion that I wanted, but I have not found any way to enable 3D support. I have attached the xorg.conf file that I run now, and the xorg.conf file that I got from the fglrxconfig program/script. Hope there is anyone that have some clue what I have done wrong and or have a xorg.conf file that I might "borrow" :-D Thanx in advance.. In website says that Internet Installation If you choose this installation type, you download a small boot medium to start the installation from and the YaST installer does the rest for you. This method also has several advantages. ... * The Internet installation source contains all packaged software for SUSE Linux Which are the missing packages? Is there anyway to download all packages for an offline installation? The version which is on stores (and costs 50 euros, and i guess about 7-8 GB), what more does it contain than the free versions? Brother dcp-110c all in one printer

Well, after much pulling of beard and gnashing of teeth, I'm unable to get my new Brother dcp-110c to work with 9.3. It's a shame too because hardware-wise it seems to be a great printer. Their web page has downloadable drivers for it: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/lpr_install.html cupswrapperDCP110C-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm DCP110Clpr-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm But even after jumping through more flaming hoops than a circus poodle on crack I still can't get it to work. I'm about ready to take it back to the store. Is this thing supported by 10.0 out of the box? If not I'm taking it back. Nice printer, but still....

OpenLDAP: Proxychache bug

Hello, We discovered a bug in SuSE's OpenLDAP RPM (openldap2-2.2.24-4.5). The previous version (openldap2-2.2.6-37.38) was fine. hello, I recently tried to build the perl-Crypt-Rijndael for my x86_64 SuSE 9.3. The source was downloaded from CPAN and I tried to use Perl's Makefile.PL Almost half of the tests fail and only a forced install was allowed -- IOW a CPAN install will fail. However the source builds perfectly in the i586 arch. on my laptop. Is there a way to tell Perl to build and run it as 32Bit? hi list, I'm experiencing strange problem. My system freezes at random intervals, generally after 15 to 30 min of heavy workload (for instance massive ftp transfer on LAN, or use of Xdvdshrink tools). What I've noticed when trouble occurs, is that the daemon kacpid start to run at 99% of one CPU/core, while the other CPU is still busy to the original task it was assigned to...When this occurs, I still can move the mouse to the graphic env. but within a minute delay the box totally hangs, and reset is the only solution... Nothing written in logs after reset! Anybody has clues, pointers, explanation ? HTH & all that .... The powernow-k8 message about the change pending bit is a known bug. We're still investigating. Random lockups are a new thing. My immediate suspicion is that its related to the ATI x700 chipset, which has problems on Linux prior to 2.6.13 or so. Sometimes no more than 47 mins, 1 hr 45 mins, 8 hrs or 1 day 17 mins. I using kernel-2.6.11.4-21.9-default. It would hang and the last thing on the screen would say System BIOS May be broken or something like that. I tried acpi=noacpi and that booted cleanly and it still froze at random intervals. Froze also means locks up. I cannot use the keyboard, mouse...nothing...I can kill the power by turning the power button on and off. I am running the latest BIOS Update. Any help would be grateful. Hello I recognise that my previous mail should be sent to the KDE topic. But the problem is not on a laptop with SuSE 9.3 and KDE 3.4.0. That's why I thought it was only for KDE 3.4.x AMD64. I could solve the problem of no root connection with KDM of KDE 3.4.2 as update of KDE 3.3 of SuSE 9.2. This is not in fact a problem. This is for security. But there is no other user of my laptop. So sometimes it can be useful to connect under root login. And I discovered that with "sux - root", I can't launch X11 softwares. So, a good reason to be able to establish a root connection ... - For root connection : the file kdmrc to be modified is in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm Set "AllowRootLogin=true" instead of false. Achtung : not the kdmrc in /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm ! - For background of login bannier : with Kcontrol this background can be modified after KDE root connection .... but no effect :-( ! In fact, the right file to be modified is backgroundrc in /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm ! This implies to edit the file. Regards Pascal

system locks up with SuSE 9.3

We have 3 computers with Asus A8V motherboard. 1 has no raid and uses the on board Marvell Gigabit ethernet.... NO problems (driver sk98lin loaded) 2 with raid 0 , when Marvell Gigabit ethernet is used (sk98lin driver) System locks up 3 with raid 1, when Marvell Gigabit ethernet is used (sk98lin driver) system locks up So the right drivers are used, but on the systems with raid (VIA VT8237) the system will hang sooner or later (but within minutes). Hello, I updated recently from 9.2 to 9.3. Both Java 1.4 and 1.5 were install, but I checked that Yast has made all sym links pointing to 1.5. Everything was perfect until I started Eclipse. Hi, Sorry about the (only slightly) off-topic post, but I was about to file a bug report about arts, when I saw the following comment on KDE bug 111838 http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111838 ------- Additional Comment #1 From Seb Ruiz 2005-09-01 01:37 ------- Unfortunately, your backtrace indicates the problem is within arts, not amarok, but we can't be sure since it is a poor backtrace. Additionally, the arts engine does not have a maintainer, so it is not guaranteed to work and there is nobody to fix the problem. SUSE 9.3 AMD64 uses arts for a lot of multimedia stuff. I have seen arts crashes in amarok and noatun for example. And yet what seems to be a perfectly legitimate bug is closed as INVALID because there is nobody to maintain arts? Why does SUSE Linux depend on software which can't be fixed because it is not maintained by anyone? What is supposed to have replaced arts by now and why doesn't SUSE 9.3 use it? What does SUSE 10.0 do about this? In the meantime, how do I rip arts out of my system and what do I replace it with? gstreamer? Which packages does this affect? juk? amarok? noatun? kaffeine? kdetv? clock advance with SuSE 9.0 AMD64 on a laptop

Hello again My laptop is an Asus L5D. On the HD, SuSE 9.0 (kernel 2.4.21) and SuSE 9.1 upgraded into 9.2 (kernel 2.6.8). With 9.0, the system clock is always not on time after use. I have to go to bios and put the clock on time. No problem with 9.2 : the system clock is stable. How to explain such a behavior ? Kind regards Pascal

Hello again Sometimes I get an error message from KDE such as in a window : === error - artsmessage ==== Sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting ========================== It can occur for ending a KDE session (a sound is played at this step), or when a software must play a sound. I hoped that an update of KDE 3.3 by 3.4 could solve this problem. This is not the case. I use ALSA sound system. What can I do ? On the same laptop (Asus L5D), there is a SuSE 9.0 AMD64 with KDE 3.1 : no problem with sound. The sound card is an Asustek nForce3 model. The main loaded module is snd_intel8x0. Kind regards Pascal

problems with toshiba r6252 dvd

I have a compaq r3240us which has a toshiba r6252 dvd drive. When I tried writing to dvd+r media with k3b I get a message that I need to use a dvd+- double layer dvd. An HP web page lists the drive as 8x but other web pages claim it is 2.x . I also tried running vmware and windows but the vmware setup for the 2.6.8-24.18 kernel fails with : Unable to make a vmmon module that can be loaded in the running kernel: insmod: error inserting '/tmp/vmware-config20/vmmon.o': -1 Invalid parameters There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the set of C header files you specified and your running kernel I know this is two problems but got to the second by trying to find a workaround for writing a dvd. Any suggestions. Don Leslie

Hello again My previous mail is about upgrade of KDE. I did an upgrade of Gnome too. One of the aims of these upgrades was to solve the problem with Gimp coming from SuSE 9.2 AMD64 installed as upgrade of SuSE 9.1 AMD64. The Gimp was unstable. I tried several version for SuSE 9.2 : no way to solve problem. With upgrade of KDE and Gnome, now The Gimp works fine .... but under KDE (not under FVWM) the background of dialog boxes is black ! I can't see the text, except when mouse cursor is on a menu option. Same behaviour for aMule 2.0.2. An idea of how to solve this problem ? Kind regards Pascal

Hello all ! I was very happy after upgrading KDE 3.3 into KDE3.4 with Yast on my SuSE 9.2 Pro AMD64. But no longer when I wanted to establish a root connection from KDM : the message when i type "root" in login window with its password is that it is not possible ! Surprising ! Well, I tried to modify manually or with Yast/"editor of sysconfig" but no improvement :-( With xdm, I can connect under root but this is a fvwm session instead of KDE. What do I have to do ?
