Folks, I am building kernels as RPMs for use in installing across a large Opteron cluster. For this need a post-install script that will reliably updated and maintain /boot/grub/menu.1st A node may have say 2 or 3 bootable kernels active at any one time. With RedHat, I had the 'grubby' tool that could be used to add a new entry such that it inherited the kernel options etc. of whatever the current default kernel is. There doesn't appear to be an equivalent to Grubby in the SuSE distro - (but I guess there must me something related to grubby that creates the menu.lst file when first installing SuSE from say CD) So my question is - without me reinventing the wheel, what is the prefered way of adding (and removing)entries to /boot/grub/menu.1st ? Hello, recently we have installed in our lab an Opteron system (Tyan 2882 motherboard, two Opteron 244 processor, 8 GB memory) running SuSE AMD64 9.0 Using the PGI compiler suite we did some memory allocation tests. We found a modest 4 GB memory limit per allocated array. According to PGI engineers this is not a compiler fault, the limit is just set in kernel's mmap.c routine. Would it be safe to change this value and recompile the kernel or it would require changing some other routines? Question regarding Ethernet compatibility

I've ordered a AMD 64 3200 System that has a Realtek RTL8110S GigaBit LAN on the mother board, is this supported by Suse 9.0 AMD 64, if not can someone recommend an inexpensive solid Ethernet Card. I only require a 100MB. Thank you, Rick

Mystery crashes

My dual opteron 242 K8W thunder with 4Gb of DDR400 Reg ECC has been running Suse 9.0 for a couple of weeks now. Everything seems to be working fine and memtest showed no problems. Unfortunately, every few days or so (it has happened 3 times now), the system just freezes up, and I mean completely. No logins, no escapes, no keyboard or mouse response at all. It still responds to pings though, which is strange since no other remote operations are successful. There are no messages in the logs (at least the ones I've checked), so I assume its probably hardware related. Any advice/checks I can try? Its not debilitating since, but it sure is worrisome. Hmm, this sounds reasonable. I am currently using the 0.01b beta BIOS, which is quite old. I am however a tad leery to flash again, since last time I did it my root mount point was deleted with disasterous consequences. Has anybody updates to the 2885 v1.02 bios for the K8W? Does it solve the memory hole problem from pre 0.01b? SATA works as hde under 2.6

Hello world, I have successfully compiled 2.6.3 kernel with via82cxxx driver and the absolute minimum scsi the menuconfig will let me get away with (seems to need it for booting...) and I got yast to partition and format my SATA drive as hde1 and hde2. Under the 2.4 kernel, the serial sata would not work with 3 drives attached, and it would hang with the Patch-CD when I tried to load serial sata drivers. It's been a frustrating 3 weeks getting first Mandrake and then SuSE to work with an FIC k8-800t motherboard. I reported before I got nothing but a black screen for failure. I fixed that by turning on the logo and VGA support during boot, and then I read the /var/log/boot.msg file to figure out where I was going wrong with other things. I also stupidly had placed Reiserfs as a module, but changing that to built in to the kernel allowed the system to full boot. So now I've got a few minor things to fix, but it looks like I now have a fully functional AMD64 linux system ready to write code on using some nice fast sata drives. What is interesting is that the bios reports the sata connectors as being able to talk to only one drive each, but the linux driver reports looking for 2 drives on each connector. So sata-0 is ide2 and has hde and hdf, and sata-1 is ide3 with hdg and hdh. I've only got one drive, so it's hde. And it works, so I'm happy now!!! Patience, persistance, truth, Dr. mike

npower network card

It's reported in hardware config - network card - driver - ... - modprobe nvnet It's in a shuttle xpc Does this mean I have to download the nforce drivers from the nvidia site and compile? Leaving 32 bit RPMs out of Supplementary updates causes conflicts

Hi, I tried to upgrade to KDE 3.2 by adding the directory suse.de/suse/x86_64/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-source/ from an internatiional mirror to my list of software source media in YaST. Install/Remove software starts OK, but I have noticed that the KDE 3.2 directories for amd64 are missing updates to 32 bit library RPMs. This causes conflicts similar to the one listed below. Is there any reason why the 32 bit files are missing from KDE 3.2? #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2004-02-20 23:13:58 #### qt3-devel 3.3.0-43 conflict Required by: qt3-devel-tools requires qt3-devel = 3.3.0- qt3-man requires qt3-devel = 3.3.0- Conflicts with: qt3-devel-32bit requires qt3-devel = 3.2.1- Conflict Resolution: ( ) Do Not Update qt3-devel ( ) Remove All 3 Conflicting Packages Delete qt3-devel-32bit Delete qt3-devel-tools Delete qt3-man ( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies #### YaST2 conflicts list END ### Also, I have seen a similar conflict when installing Marble Blast from SuSE Wine Rack. Lyx Math Fonts & Symbols

I've been looking around for solutions as to why Lyx (1.3.2-123 64-bit) won't display the math Symbols other than the "Operators." in the math panel. I've read around and tried the 'fc-cache -fv,' (since 'ldd `which lyx`' shows the "libfontconfig.so.1") trick with the new math fonts in ~/.fonts and also with them in /usr/share/fonts and /usr/share/lyx/fonts. That didn't work. Also, I tried lyx -dbg 4194303 and even lyx -sysdir /usr/share/lyx -dbg 4194303 since when I add the '-dbg 4194303' flag and I choose a panel with invisible symbols I get Looking for math XPM called "symbol name here" outputted from debug. So, I traced down that debug statement in the source code and made sure that the path it's looking for is accessible and the XPMs exist there. That still doesn't work. Google seems to have low precision when dealing with my search strings for this problem. Recall's high, but since the three letter 'lyx' is always ignored the contextual neighbors set the search vector: so Google's not been much help. I also tried the xft trick, but that doesn't seem to apply on my system since I don't even have the mkfontdir and other utils the older X uses. If I knew what the problem was, I could probably find a way to fix it. But, I can't tell if it's a QT problem a LyX problem or what. Ideas? TIA! P.S. Hello, I have a Tyan 2880 with dual 244s running 2.4.21-60-smp, with 8.2b9. It has 6GB of memory installed. Also, the machine hung after being up for two days without any error (that I have been able to find so far). The BIOS version is 2.02 (latest). Any ideas on what is happening with the memory and how I can fix/take care of the reporting error? I think that it may be related to the hang as the machine was stable for 6mths+ with 4GB of RAM. Booting up FIC K8-800T

Finally!! I've had a very frustrating 3 weeks trying to get this AMD64 system to boot with either Suse or Mandrake. I have now got Suse booted on a system with just 2 IDE drives - the SATA is disabled. The process was difficult because the system dies even with acpi disabled - it still loads the module cpufreqd which is supposed to control the processor frequency. Once this module loaded successfully, the system would freeze. Editing the file /etc/sysconfig/powermanagement did not work. I ended up editing the file /etc/rc.d/cpufreqd - adding the line "exit 5" as the first line - and now my system boots! Time for sleep I guess, but I *will* get sata to work! I am very disappointed in suse's support on this, but I guess if I'm going to be on the bleeding edge I get to bleed. I just got 2.6.3 which is now 2 days old, supposedly there is a fix for the via 8237 chip set in there that makes sata drives look like hd's. Back in a day or so and I'll let you all know about that sleepless night... Patience, persistence, truth, Dr. mike

[suse-amd64] sata_sil module hangs on boot if 3 or more SATA disks are attached

If I connect 3 or more SATA disks to my Sil3114 controller, sata_sil module hangs on boot with a DMA timeout error. With 2 disks everything works fine. What can I do with my 2 useless SATA disks? Axel.

Compiling a52dec and transcode in SuSE 9

Greetings -- I'm trying to compile transcode for x86_64 in SuSE 9.0. I'm using it for dv files, so I believe I need the a52dec package, which provides PCM support. Unfortunately this package does not appear to be available for the x86_64 platform in SuSE. I got the tarball for a52dec-0.7.4 and it compiles fine -- among other things, the ./configure scripts shows the following: checking for gcc option to produce PIC... -fPIC checking if gcc PIC flag -fPIC works... yes In transcode, liba52 is the default audio decoder, and it is detected after I installed it: liba52 audio plugin (>=0.7.3) | default decoder yes | yes However, transcode won't compile with it -- /usr/lib64/gcc-lib/x86_64-suse-linux/3.3.1/../../../../x86_64-suse-linux/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/liba52.a(parse.o): relocation R_X86_64_32S can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC /usr/local/lib/liba52.a: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[3]: *** [a52_decore.la] Error 1 I'm a dolt at this stuff; how do I recompile with -fPIC? I realize it's a gcc flag, but I compile by typing "make". Do I recompile a52dec or transcode? Of course, if anyone knows of a SuSE x86_64 version of a52dec and/or transcode, that would be even better. Appreciate your help on this -- transcoding video was a major reason for my buying the machine. Cheers, David

Does SuSE for AMD64 include everything for 32-bit install

Hi list, This might seem an obvious question... hopefully with an obvious answer! Does the AMD64 edition include in the distribution everything you need to make a plain 32-bit SuSE 9.0 install, or, if you want to run both, do you have to buy the regular edition *and* the AMD64 version? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Emachines m6805

Has anyone had any luck installed SuSE 9 64-bit on the eMachines m6805? I was unable to get installed SuSE 9 Pro installed. It ran through the initial stage ok but on reboot it was extremely slow and refused to bind an IP. Before I plunk down the $ on the 64-bit version Id like to now if I should expect the same results. At this time the only dist. I could get installed trouble free was Fedora. Thanks for any help Mike Katz

Decision: Any ideas ... ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don´t know if the problem is in partitioning my drive. As I formerly said: I've got two Samsung Spinpoint 1614c 160 GB SATA drives. Both are partitioned in each two partitions. C: WinXP NTFS ~75 GB F: empty FAT32 ~75 GB G: empty FAT32 ~75 GB H: empty FAT32 ~75 GB As you may see, I obviously have no problem in reserving a whole drive for Linux. I also have no technical explanation, but I think changing the partition data will not solve my problem ... What do you think ? Any comments will be appreciated !!!!! Regards Francisco

GigaRAID ATA 133 ITE IT8712F Controller and S-ATA RAID

Hi! Suse installation doesn't recognize hard disks on "GigaRAID ATA 133 ITE IT8712F Controller" without RAID configurated (only one hard disk) :( On the other hand, even with PatchCD recognize S-ATA (Sil3112) hard disks, doesn't recognize RAID 0 on it, hard disks separated only and I can't create or resize partitions. WinXP works perfectly with that. Any solution? Regards.
