ripping problem with cdparanoia

I ran into a strange problem this weekend. I was trying to rip a couple of CDs with my amd64 suse 9.1. professional system for the first time. I used grip with cdparanoia set as the ripping program. cdparanoia spends its time ripping, then leaves a file that seems to be the correct length for the songs it's ripping, but when I play the files (the wav files from cdparanoia), the first 3 or so seconds have music, then dead silence for the remainder of the rip which would be the length of the original song. To be sure, I tried some rips that I'd done previously using either cdparanoia under RH 9, or on windows with I forget what, and they play fine, so it isn't the playing - it's the ripping. I've ripped scores of cds with cdparanoia in the past, even though it might have been an older version. Anybody had success ripping with cdparanoia? If not, what are you using successfully? Any ideas why this would be a problem? Regards, Bill

Hi ! I wanted to know what flavour of JDK/JRE comes with 'SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9'. i.e. - 32-bit or 64-bit ? If 64-bit JDK/JRE, then, is JBoss compiled in the 64-bit environment ? How much memory can the JDK/JRE address ? Note: All quetions are pertaining to installing Suse on Sun Opteron (V20Z) servers. TIA, Kunal

booting woes

Hi, I'm having trouble booting my SuSE professional 9.0 following installation. I've tried installing using the no-ACPI and safe-mode options but neither appear to help. My PC always freezes at approximately the same point while booting (once it made it all the way to the login screen but froze there). Unfortunately, verbose mode doesn't give me many clues except that it's soon after the setfreqd procedure/command when the problem arises. Possibly, I need to look into installing some drivers at installation but I'm wondering whether I might have a problem because my hard disk is greater than 137Gb. Hi All, could anyone compile and link mjpegtools-1.6.2 on the AMD! I've tried it for three days now, but it doesn't work. Does anybody has a src.rpm or an already compiled x86_64 (with mpeg2enc)??? Thanx in advance Mike

MPlayer and mpg - audio sounds terrible

Hello there, I installed MPlayer 1.0pre5 from source and everything seemed to work. But when I try to play mpeg videos the sound sounds like played under water and distorted. I thought that this is a MPlayer problem but i read in the MPlayer list, that this might be a gcc problem in combination with mp3lib. There are a few solutions mentioned: The first was to use libmad instead of mp3lib. I tried it with mplayer -ac mad xyz.mpg but the sound is still distorted. After that I tried to recompile MPlayer with the following additional entry in the config.mak EXTRA_INC = -fno-strict-aliasing But nothing changed. So before I have to go the hard way and recompile my gcc (what I would like to avoid), does anyone know another solution? Thanks a lot Andy

Problem compiling vmware driver

Hi. I'm trying to install vmware on suse 9.1 professional for amd64 as the host OS. When I run vmware-config.pl I get the following. Any ideas on what is wrong. I have seen that there are people who have gotten vmware to work for this setup, so I suspect that I'm just missing a package or something. Any help appreciated. largest mem available to a 64 bit binary, and how I can reduce buffer cache usage?

Hi folks: I have an application I am running which wants to use as much memory as possible. I have a quad 848 with 32 GB ram onn it. It has been running for a while with an RSS of 15GB, and a total memory size of 19GB. This leaves well over 11 GB for the cache and the os. Sure enouch, using the atop tool, and the vmstat tool, I see cache at 15068336k, free mem at 10432k, and it is swaped out to the maximum extent possible. From what I see, it needs about another 4 GB to do the operation entirely in RAM. I m having severe difficulty believing that keeping buffer cache so high, and swapping out pages is in any way helpful to this process. I did set user limits to unlimited where possible, adjusted the kernel.sh{max,all} to enable 20 GB of shared memory. What else can I do? I would like to be able to use 3/4 of the ram of the machine for applications, and not have 4 GB of swapped pages when I have 15 GB of disk cache. I understand the need for disk cache, but paging to disk, and filling up swap space in this particular scenario makes no sense whatsoever. I see this on SuSE 9.0 2.4.21-215-smp, as well as the RHEL kernels on the machine. This is a compute node for a cluster. Thanks. Kees, It really depends what you want scenario you would like to benchmark. If you are looking at processor instruction attributes, there are benchmarks like linpack or SPEC which are a good reference for those in the scientific computing community. Others that want to look at total system performance look to TPC (Transaction Processing Council), www.tpc.org, to look at a bounded, real-world TP environment. This benchmark is far larger than you would probably consider but all the rules, documentation, procedure and audit requirements were necessary to removing the marketing hype from what is a quantitative exercise. If you look at TPC though, you can see they created a few variations to show different common workloads: TPC-C is the OLTP workload TPC-H is an ad-hoc query workload TPC-R is a Report generation workload TPC-W web based transaction workload. Remember that the folks who design these systems/processors/compilers have also had their eyes open to what benchmarks are out these and I remember in days of Digital's 64 bit Alpha chip, system cache size was would make x benchmark work best. You only have to take a look at the present Itanium 2 MP processor line with 3, 4, or 6MB L3 cache variants. Manufacturer compilers use to recognize code for standard benchmarks and inline hand optimized routines to speed their platform over another. That is why GNU is a great equalizer. Lastly, consider most people will by AMD or Intel based system, not processor. Operations that read and update utilize paths in and out of the processor that are tens, hundreds and evens thousands of times slower when doing an I/O. Some benchmarks can exploit HyperTransport's duplex advantage, while others minimize the advantages of NUMA versus non-NUMA architectures. Some specific benchmarks can look at cache hotspots in a multiprocessor environment and cache coherency issues (which limits the ability to scale in a linear fashion). These benchmarks will become much more interesting with the release of AMD and Intel multi-core chips. The only benchmarks that matters to you are your own. Aside fron that, my benchmarks between 32 and 64 bit systems have shown that I get the best results on each system using code built for those specific architectures. I have 32 bit apps that were simply dragged and dropped into the 64 bit systems with some performance improvements. But the big improvements came when we recompiled our apps using new versions of GCC that supported the 64 bit architecture of the Opterons. For our numerically intensive applications, we saw over 70% improvements over 32 bit systems running at the same clock speed. But there was another cost that affected the throughput. The 64 bit compiled apps would use up more memory, so the memory that was just adequate to support the 32 bit apps would not be enough for 64 bit apps, and the subsequent swapping would make the apps run very slowly, as expected. I think that if you can rebuild your mysql binaries from source on the 64 bit system using the latest GCC compilers, you can gain huge increases in performance as well. eyc
