SLES8 vs. Microtech USB Cameramate

I have SLES8 with the latest (precompiled) kernel updates on an AMD64 (HDAMB) system. I also have a Microtech USB Cameramate compact flash/smart card reader. It appears that it does not work. It recognizes it as a usb-storage device, but that's it. It *appears* that the Microtech CompactFlash (DPCM) support is not enabled in the kernel, but I cannot find a kernel compile .config file to check. (Also, I'd *rather* stick with mainstread kernel binaries if I can. Tyan S2885ANRF AGP framebuffer write slowness?

Andreas and other interested folks, I just grabbed the 2.4.21-139 kernel, built it and installed it on my Tyan S2885ANRF. It now finds the 8151 AGP controller correctly, and seems to correctly identify both AGP110 (ATI X1) and older AGP v2 cards, go into 4x/8x modes fine and the like. However, if you take video-card-of-your-choice, map its framebuffer and set the AGP bridge for fast writes, the write bandwidth to the framebuffer is BAD. About a factor of 40 slower than it should be. A 1x card writes at about 18MB/s, a 4x card at 25 and an 8x card at 48MB/s. These numbers should be 256MB/s, 1GB/s and 2GB/s. Under no circumstances (1x, fast writes off) should the bandwidth be less than 256MB/s. I've tired this on lots of 760MPX machines and get the performance I expect, but I am at a loss as to what could possibly be causing this slowness. I notice that the Tyan board sets up the MTRR for the whole PCI physical address space to be uncachable: linux:~ # cat /proc/mtrr reg00: base=0xc0000000 (3072MB), size=1024MB: uncachable, count=1 reg01: base=0xbe000000 (3040MB), size= 32MB: uncachable, count=1 In previous framebuffer drivers, I have set the MTRR for the frame buffer to be write combining, which does have an effect on performance ('tho I've never known the effect to be a factor of 40!). I'd like to do the same thing on the Tyan board, but unsetting the c0000000-ffffffff uncacheable MTRR, or fragmenting it so that everything in that region EXCEPT the framebuffer is uncacheable both quickly lead to system crasshes (why? how could caching the framebuffer hang the system in text mode (corrupt screen contents, sure)? is this a race while the region is uncacheable?) It seems there's something strange going on. Could this be some kind of IOMMU interaction? The AGP aperture ends up at e0000000, which I cover with an uncacheable MTRR entry when I try the fragments, so I don't THINK I'm hurting anything. Any ideas why it could possibly be so slow or what I might do to get it back up to reasonable write speeds? Hard to do video when you can only get 2 frames/sec into the card's RAM. Thanks! -mcq

32-bits vs 64-bits MySQL performance

Hello list, Finally I've got a working Opteron, so I decided to test its stability and speed. I imported a backup of the database it is going to run and ran a few queries we use in our scripts on them to test how fast it was. We ran this script a few times with different concurrency levels using apache and ab and then we started a 32 bits mysql version and ran the same script with the same parameters again. There were some results I didn't expect. These are the results I got: First number is # threads, second and third queries/s, last is % difference Threads 64 bits 32 bits % 1 1944,56 2462,48 26,6% 2 2893,32 3604,71 24,6% 3 2867,71 3654,71 27,4% 4 2818,35 3519,48 24,9% 5 2768,75 3478,66 25,6% Apparently the 32 bits version of MySQL is almost 25% faster than the 64-bit flavor of MySQL. The queries used here are 'heavy' queries, not the average selects. Every result you see here above is the result of requesting 5000 times the script, resulting in approx. 250.000 queries on the MySQL server. To avoid coincidences in the queries we chose, I made a second script, containing 'light' queries, the results: Threads 64 bits 32 bits % 1 7091,16 6808,51 -4,0% 2 8358,85 8779,57 5,0% 3 9290,33 9678,81 4,2% 4 9346,16 10075,78 7,8% 5 9514,71 10289,20 8,1% 7 9495,10 10306,70 8,5% Less difference, but the 32-bits version is still faster than the 64-bits, with more threads the difference gets up to 16%. The used MySQL version is 4.0.16 for both 32 bits and 64 bits and I'm running SuSE Linux Beta Distribution version 8.2-beta9 with a 2.4.19-NUMA kernel on a Dual Opteron 246 w/ 4G RAM on an Tyan K8S motherboard. After the benchmarks I have a few questions, - Why is the 64-bits version so much slower than the 32-bits version? The 64-bits version is compiled with gcc 3.2.1 on a SuSE box (without optimalisations apparently), the 32-bits is compiled with gcc 2.95.3 with optimalisations '-O2 -mcpu=pentiumpro'. Is the difference in performance due to these compiler options or is there something else I totally overlooked? - Is it useful to compile my own MySQL (with gcc 3.3?) or do I have to wait until MySQL is better optimized for the Opteron? A lot of questions and text, but I hope someone can enlighten me on this matter. tia, - kees

Is there a directory or FTP site where I can go to pick and choose the rpm packages I want to use to update my system? There are a few packages in the UnitedLinux SP2 that I want, but I don't want to install the entire patch. HDAMB System vs. k_smp-2.4.19-256

I'm having further problems with booting any kernel other then the k_smp_2.5.19-191 that I am currently running. My system is a dual Opteron 244 in a HDAMB system board (Rhapsody?) with a mere 1Gig of ram. I have SCSI hard drive, and an IDE CDROM and ZIP drive. The AGP video card is a GeForce4 MX440. And otherwise it is SLES8. When I install (via yast) the 2.4.19-256 kernel, it boots only about far enough to print some ACPI messages, then it freezes. I set vga=0 on the boot line, little difference. So far, none of the "patches" for the kernel as downloaded by yast have worked for me, but I can boot the install CDROM in rescue mode, use rpm to install the k_smp_2.4.19-191 kernel, and I'm back in business. I can occasionally run tests, but I only sporadically have time to fiddle with this during the week. A nit: It would be much nicer if the kernel rpm packages *added* themselves to the grub file instead of replacing the existing boot config. Newbie question

The good news: we just got two new NEWISYS 2100 servers (dual Opterons)! The bad news: all my experience is with Debian and they came pre-installed with SuSE Enterprise Server 8.0. And there's no Debian for AMD64 (yet). So I have some questions that I'm sure are FAQs. Point me in the right direction and I'll RTFM. What is the difference between Enterprise Server and SuSE Professional? I know there are the United Linux add-on packages. But there are a lot of packages I need that aren't on the installation disks. I'd prefer 64-bit compiled applications, naturally. For example, Cyrus (imap) and dependences don't come on the installation disks. So...do I just download the Professional iso's for the AMD64? In general, where does one go for binary 64-bit rpms? I'm considering two SCSI RAID controllers: 1) Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S (single-channel, Ultra320) 2) LSI MegaRAID SCSI 320-1 (single-channel, Ultra320) Will both of these work with any x86-64 linux kernels (64 bit), and will they work with the kernels shipped with either SLES8 (x86-64) or SuSE8.2 (x86-64) Beta9 ? Dear All, We are developing a Solid State Cache usingAMD Opteron Processor with 64 bit Linux as OS. The system has 16GB SDRAM. We are plannig to use 14GB of RAM for storage and remaining for kernel and applications. Our SCSI IO Controller (FC919x) supports 64 bit dma. How we can use 14GB for storage purpose. We used pci_alloc_consistent and failed to allocate memory more than 6MB. We are allocating 512 bytes block at a time. Is there is any other optiom to use 14GB allocation for DMA. Thanks in Advance. 3ware SATA controller

Hi, I'm using Sles 8.2beta9 for some testing and have come accross a performance issue with a SATA card. This is in a dual opteron system using the Rioworks HDAMA motherboard. I added a 3ware 8506-4LP SATA raid controller card with 2 drives attached to it. I'm seeing slow performance copying large files when I use the controller to build a raid-0 array. Copying a 5GB file takes about 6 minutes. I deleted the array from the controller and left the 2 drives to be regocnized by the OS. I then built a raid-0 array using 'mdadm'. I can now copy the same 5GB file in about 95 seconds. This is on a fresh reboot so I know the file isn't cached. My first question is, does anyone else have this card? and if so are they seeing any performance issues in their opteron system? Any idea if I should I go to 3ware for opteron linux support? Or is the driver an open source project? Last question isnt amd_64 specific but if anyone knows the answer I would appreciate it. Will I take a noticable performance hit using raid-0 in the OS as opposed to the controller card? (Assuming they improve performance on the card.) Mark

I've had very good experiences with the 3Ware line, though the only SATA unit I've used is the 8500-8, not the 8506-X. One thing you might check is to be sure that your driver version and firmware version are in sync. 3Ware does seem to release new drivers quite often, and most driver upgrades require that you also upgrade the firmware and display manager. I believe that support for the 85xx is compiled into the kernel so you might want to check that your firmware isn't a different version from whatever is compiled into the kernel. The one box I have with an 8500-x in it is presently being use to test Windows 2003 server, but it was initially loaded with SuSE 8.2 (shrink wrapped production version, not the beta - don't know if anything is different) and it did very well. I can't confirm any specific tests copying large files, but don't recall any need to test for that (performance seemed fine). Not sure what would happen if the firmware and driver were different versions, but poor performance is certainly one possibility. Is grub working under Beta-9? When I put a new custom-compiled kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst, it did not change anything in the boot screen. Also, when I tried to access yast2-bootloader within yast2, the machine freezed. I am currently running k_smp-2.4.19-237. Regards, Hugh

readline 32bit for Linux/64bit

Next problem. The Icarus Verilog simulation engine wants the readline package for the vvp program. If I'm gonna succeed at making a vvp32 for AMD64, I'm going to need readline-32bits and readline-32bits-devel packages. I'd be willing to have a go at this myself. Is there a standard way to do this? OK, my product has a header file, _pli_types.h, that is generated by configure to account for word size in defining 64bit and 32bit types. But if I'm going to support 64 and 32bit compilation on AMD64, I'm going to need to do something about that. Makefiles for targeting both 64 and 32bit

I'm working on my Makefiles for Icarus Verilog so that my package can all at once be built to support 64bit and 32bit compiles. Most components I plan to keep native (the core compiler and preprocessor) but there are a few libraries to be compiled for both 32 and 64bit, and the vvp run time engine will need to be compiled for 64 and 32bits. Ideally, I would like to find a way to do this build all at once with a single make, and I would like configure to auto-detect this situation and set up the makefiles. It is OK to require GNU make, in fact it is already required.
