packetwriting how after compiling and inserting the new modules?

Hi there, I have a Mandrake 8.2 (sorry!) on a pentium II 300 MHZ laptop running. I have a parallel external cdwriter I have a usb multimemory reader/writer (MMC & SD, SmartMedia,compactFlash and Memory Stick) I have a internal DVD I was able to compile 2.4.19 with packetwriting and UDF suport I inserted the pkcdvd module and udf module cdrecord -scanbus gives me host 0 the dvd host 1 Multimemory reader/writer host 2 HP 7510e cd writer When I use xcdraost I can burn to my external writer I can also write and read to multimemory reader/writer I can also read dvd's How can I do packetwriting to the CD-WRITER? /dev/scd0 points to my dvd and there's no /dev/scd1. In fact I can't find any file in the /dev directory wich is pointing to my host2? thanks in advance Guy Forssman

how to format the second session of a cdrw?

Hi, I'm trying to make a bootable cdrw with an udf filesystem on it. Unfortunately the PC BIOS can boot only from the first session which must be iso9660, so the udf must be in the second session. While I can easily create an udf,iso9660 cdrw I haven't been able to create an iso9660,udf cd. It seems that cdrwtool can only format the first session of the disk. Is there any way to format the second session? The udf mount options include a session=# so I assume one should be able to create an udf also on session 2. -- Massimo Dal Zotto <dz(a)debian.org>

UDF and DVD+RW speed issues.

Hellooo there, I just got my 2.4.19 patched with dvd+rw and got everything running, BUT i've run some tests, but it's awfully slow when i write many small files to it (cp -R /usr/src/linux). i formatted it with this command: 'mkudffs --spartable=2 --udfrev=0x0150 --media-type=cdrw /dev/cdrom' and mount it with the noatime parameter. any suggestions? guStaVo

empty symlinks using packet-2.4.19-2.patch

Let's say A = kernel 2.4.19 patched with packet-2.4.19.patch (or earlier versions) and B = kernel 2.4.19 (or later versions) patched with packet-2.4.19.patch, A can read symlinks written by A A cannot read symlinks written by B B cannot read symlinks written by A B cannot read symlinks written by B. I can see that a change was made in the function udf_symlink_filler in udf/symlink.c and that seems to be the problem, the symlinks exist and have names, but they don't seem to have a readable target. I considered just reverting to an earlier version of symlink.c, but I didn't think it would work with the other changes in the udf file system. [OT] Which DVD+R/+RW drive to buy?

For the lack of a better place I'll ask this here. I'm looking to buy a DVD+R/+RW drive. Judging from the specs Philips DVDRW228K seem like a good choice. Anyone have experience with this or any other good drive. Writing speed

Hello, I am using 2.4.19 kernel with patch-2, udftools-1.0.0b2. RW Disk is mounted as: /dev/pktcdvd0 on /mnt type udf (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noatime), RW drive in case is: scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices Vendor: TEAC Model: CD-W540E Rev: 1.0C Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 via ide-scsi, physically located on primary/slave interface, capable of RW operations at up to 12x speed. The RW media is marked as 6x compatible. Maximum achieved speed of writing of a big file to RW disk in this configuration is 77 KB/sec, which seems to be pretty slow, and during this process the machine is pretty unusable. Is it normal or it is possible to speed up the writing process ? With the best regards, Alex

Why not included in distributions?

What is the reason that packet writing is not incuded in distributions, nor ready built rpms are available? It seems to me that working version of packet writing for "hackers" was available in 2000 and still it is hacker sw in 2002, although it is an important function for all users. I think there are good instructions how to install and use packet writing somewhere in the list archive but the websites are very outdated. It would be very nice if someone take the time to write a small howto with hints and updates the websites. Caj

cdrwtool -d /dev/scd0 -q freezes

Hello I can't make cdrwtool working. root@zigzag:/home/nikita/B> cdrwtool -d /dev/scd0 -t 4 -q using device /dev/scd0 setting speed to 4 1206KB internal buffer setting write speed to 4x Settings for /dev/scd0: Fixed packets, size 32 Mode-2 disc I'm going to do a quick setup of /dev/scd0. The disc is going to be blanked and formatted with one big track. All data on the device will be lost!! Press CTRL-C to cancel now. ENTER to continue. Initiating quick disc blank Disc capacity is 275616 blocks (551232KB/538MB) Formatting track And it freezes forever. Process is in D state, CD drive is locked, but it is not writing anything (at least, it's led is off). No error messages appear in syslog. Could someone please help me to debug the problem? System information: Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 Kernel 2.4.19, with 2.4.19-2 packet-writing patch. cdrwtool from Debian udftools 1.0.0b2-2 package. cdrecord works with the drive perfectly.
