I'm stating a new thread, because there seems to be some confusion here... I have been trying to use the HP DVD+RW 100i to make a UDFS in Linux for random disk access. I was able to write to the disk last week, but now i've set up a new linux box with the same drive, and i can't write to it at all. right now, i've downloaded the 2.4.18 kernel source, and applied the 2.4.19-rc2 patch to it. I continue by applying the patch that Peter posted on the 21st, and then recompile the kernel starting with 'make oldconfig' with the .config file i have configured for my older kernel source. Now, i know that the UDF module is loaded, i try to create the UDF file system on the DVD by typing 'mkudffs --media-type=cdrw /dev/cdrom': [root@ksi4 /root]# mkudffs --media-type=cdrw /dev/cdrom trying to change type of multiple extents hmmm... this didn't work. Setting speed and file corruption

Hello, I have been having some problems with writing to cd-rw. I fear that it may be a hardware problem, so I would like to force writing on slower speeds (like 1x or 2x, my drive only does 4x). How can I accomplish it? Moreover, I read something about creating a ext2 filesystem in a cd-rw. Is there any reason for this being better than udf? What is the right way to format a cd as ext2? Finally, I am facing the file corruption problems that some people have already complained: cp -r /usr/src/linux /mnt/cdrw ends with a bounch of corrupted files. Is there any solution for this problem in progress? I am not a kernel developper, but if there is some way I can help (like testing), just let me know. mixed read/write operation

Hello Is it possible to exclude mixed write/read operations with pktcdvd ? For example when i move multiple small files from CDRW disk to harddrive mixed read /write transactions occurs. This degrades overall performance and potentially can destroy laser head of CDRW drive. Can be in pktcdvd code implemented mechanism similar to semaphore: stop write transactions when we have read one and contra ? Thanks. The file that was inaccessable had a checksum error of some sort; I am uncertain if it was an error with UDF or with pktcdvd. It also reported the directories that I could not create over as being there, but with the filenames similar to '[DELETED] r24', r24 being the directory's name beforehand. It almost seems like the thing is being left there intentionally by the Windows program, perhaps for ease in an undeletion attempt. so, you make a boot floppy with DOS (or similar OS, like Win9x), and copy the .bin and .exe file onto the floppy. then, boot up with the floppy and execute the exe file with the bin file as argument. i just remembered this -i did it a while ago. there should be some howto online, though; do a search. :) one last thing!! Packet Writing in 2.6 kernel

I just was reading the kernel 2.6 summary message at http://kerneltrap.org/node.php?id=348 I saw that packet writing is hoped to be merged into the official 2.6 kernel before it is released. Their is one comment about them not knowing if anyone is working on a 2.5 patch or not. FYI: I came across the message because of my interest in XFS, not packet writing, so I don't know what the state of the kernel patches are. Sony 40x12x48x Problems - Willing to help debug

Greetings - A few days ago I purchased a Sony CRX195E1 (labeled as CRX195A1, but I think they're basically the same drive), which is a 40x12x48x Powerburn-enabled CD-RW. Although I have been able to get packet-writing to work in Linux, I haven't been able to get it to work in an entirely error-free manner. Examples are: -If I delete a directory on the CD-RW (say, dir1) in Windows, I am unable to create a directory of that name in Linux (mkdir claims that a directory of that name already exists). -For some reason, at least one file (possibly more) gives me 'access denied' errors, despite the utter lack of restrictions put on the thing. For instance, if I were to do 'ls *.jpg' it would stick in the middle of the output 'myfile.jpg - Access Denied'. Furthering this problem, after deleting and replacing this file in Windows, I not only did not regain access, but I got TWO of these errors on the SAME filename. -The CD-RW's drive light is almost ALWAYS on when I have the CD-RW mounted. -On one disc, the drive writing time was exceedingly slow when writing lots of little files. However, I suspect that the disc may have been bad. I have attempted using both SCSI emulation mode and plain IDE, but the problems seem to persist equally between these two modes. I am rather at a loss as to what to do. Is there a possibility of the drive being damaged? I have my suspicions, but it seems to work alright in Windows. I am currently using Linux 2.4.18 on a Slackware installation, with the (I believe) latest version of the packet-writing patch. In Windows, I'm using B's Clip 3.24 (which was what came with the drive). Although my skills in kernel programming are lacking, I -am- willing to try to help debug it, albiet I don't know what can be done - I turned on the logging/debug function at it seemed to produce no errors. Any help anyone can give me would be GREATLY appreciated. I have about nine days to determine whether or not this drive is suitable for use before I can't take it back.
