From my understanding, and from what I've read at http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ , DVD RAM is like a slow hard disk, Random access, while DVD+RW is packeted just like CD RW. Can't get packet-writing working

Hi, I'm trying for a month now, but with no success. First I tried with a patch for Mandrake8.2 which was made by Peter Osterlund when I asked for - Thanks :o) Now I installed RedHat7.3 and used a 2.4.19-rc1-kernel from kernel.org which was patched by me with packetcd-2.4.19-pre4-patch. I compiled both kernels with packetcd and UDF (writing enabled) as module. Then I installed UDF-Tools 1.0.2b (./configure - make - make install). Did a modprobe -v pktcdvd. I've read the previous threads about people not being able to get packet writing working for them, and I've tried just about every recomendation to no avail. First some background info: unit: SONY DVD+RW DRU-120A (its a cd, cd rw, dvd, dvd rw device) scsi emulation alumbox cdrwtool # ./cdrwtool -d /dev/sr0 -q using device /dev/sr0 1280KB internal buffer setting write speed to 12x Settings for /dev/sr0: Fixed packets, size 32 Mode-2 disc I'm going to do a quick setup of /dev/sr0. The disc is going to be blanked and formatted with one big track. All data on the device will be lost!! Press CTRL-C to cancel now. ENTER to continue. The wierd part is this: The unit works perfectly in windows. Also, I can use the method at http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ to both format rw discs and use growisofs perfectly on the drive in linux. (not using any kernel patches at the chalmers site, just the userland tools). I can write 4 gig iso's all day long and mount em no problem. So... my guess is that this is some kind of option/protocol mismatch problem. I'd love to help debug this as a built in kernel solution to me is MUCH more preferable to a userland/isofs solution. I want to be able to create ext2 file systems, ect. I have experience coding, but none playing with the kernel or the guts of a dvd rw/packets so im not quite sure where to start debugging this. Corrupted files udf/ext2

Hallo, [was thread: readerror, no access rights] i made some more trys, copying the linux2.4.18 source-tree (about 140MB) using packetwriting to cdrw. Kernel 2.4.19-pre10 with packet 2.4.19-4, TEAC-Writer W524E IDE, used with SCSI-Device-Emulation. Write cache is disabled in the kernel. I used the same cdrw, reformatting it accordingly to ext2 and udf. I copied 2times to ext2 and 2times to udf, each after a fresh format of the cdrw. After writing to cdrw i copied back the date with cp -a to harddisk, and then made a diff from this copy on hd to the original. With ext2: No diffs in both copys With udf: diffs in both copys, but not in the same files. The number of different files was about 15 to 20. So in the moment i believe, the problem is not in packetwriting, but in udf-format. Would it be possible, to try other formats, like dos-fat, on cdrw? BTW: We had this in the other thread: CDRW's with ext2 can't be read in my Cdrom (Toshiba 6402B). Is that a problem of this drive? Greetings-- Email:KOALASOFT@GMX.DE

I was having problems with 2.4.19pre4 so I decided to try 2.5.14. Still no luck. pktsetup runs fine, but when I mount, I get a bunch of errors. Can later kernels than 2.4.0-test10 be used?

Line 1 in the instructions for 0.0.2d release states: Download Linux kernel 2.4.0-test10 (available from kernel.org <http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4>). Will the patch work when applied to later versions of the kernel (I believe the latest out is 2.4.18)? If so, I would suggest changing the instructions to read: Download Linux kernel 2.4.0-test10 or higher (available from kernel.org <http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4>). I am some what new to kernel patching, so this may be something that is normally taken for granted, but it would defiantly help out those new to the subject. Read only fs.

Hi. I've patched my 2.4.19pre4 kernel with the packet-writing patch. Then compiled and installed the kernel. Then I've gone through the proper commands. Everything works great and it shows "/dev/pktcdvd0 on /mnt type udf (rw)" when I type mount. But when I try to write something, it says "mkdir: cannot create directory `junk': Read-only file system". What went wrong? Also, the UDF support in the kernel says it does not support CDR/CDRW's, only hdds. Is there another UDF patch that I'm supposed to use? ~K.P. P.S. After that ends, i used cdrwtool -d /dev/sr/c1b0t1u0 -m 8000 (the 8000 is the size of the track, i test with an small one to end quickly) as end, i use pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd /dev/cdrecorder mkudffs /dev/pktcdvd and voila! i have /dev/pktcdvd 14938 10 14928 1% /mnt/cdrw
