hi, just wanted to report that packet writing works just fine with my new Samsung SW-216B 16/10/32 burner. I've been using it actively about week and haven't had any problems. it's also nice that packet writing works flawlessly in ide-scsi mode so i don't have to use any tricks to switch ide-cd and ide-scsi modules to be able to use both packet-writing and cdrecord. one minor problem is that all writing is done in 1x mode (/proc/driver/pktcdvd/pktcdvd0 reports 300k/sec) for my 4x media. but if that's what it currently takes to make it work reliably, it's ok by me. anyway it's nice to see how packet writing has evolved since year ago when I first tried it. good job guys! -- Martin Lillepuu | e-mail: martin(a)lillepuu.com | gsm: +372 515 6450

transport protocal

hi! is the transport protocal in the usb-storage effect the packet-cd? i try the USB cdrw , they are acer 4406 , acer 6424 , and IODATA cdrw , they can work on the packet-cd , their transport protocal in the usb-storage is the cb(i)\\8020i , but i try the HP 8230e , IOMEGA ZIPCD 650 , and some usb mobilebox , they can not work with the packet-cd , and their 's transport protocall is not the cb(i)\\8020i , so , i don't know it is the usb-storage's problem or the packet-cd's problem that the HP and IOMEGA USB cdrw can not work thanks

I've done some more tests: dd-in exactly 16MB, either in 64kb ok 2kb blocks works perfectly (readback and cmp), but if I try something 64kb unaligned (I was testing dd-in of 260kb), the pktcdvd has problems prereading the rest of the last packet (it shedules reads and then ignores read errors although the medium is perfectly readable using any userland tool). It will then write the data as they are, so if I dd-out 260kb, I'll get written data but the rest of the last packet is empty (zeroes) instead of the original content. Problem With DEVFS

Gentlemen: Your packet writing software is one of the *best* utilities that is available for Linux/GNU. I congratulate you on your efforts for the Open Source community. Packet-cd works beautifully on a 2.4.17 Linux kernel that is compiled *without* the DEVFS option. However, packet-cd does not function on the 2.4.17 kernel that is compiled *with* DEVFS. The modules will load properly and disks can even be formatted, but the command pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/scd0 returns with an error message about not locating the CD-ROM device. (/dev/pktcdvd0 does exist) Is there some change or addition that I can make to /etc/devfsd.conf to get packet-cd to work with DEVFS? Larry Andrew Piet Detroit, Michigan USA lapiet at home dot com

Teac CD-524E Experiences?

I am currently considering returning a recently-purchased Sony CRX175A and buying a Teac CD-524E. Among other reasons for the switch, I have had severe problems with using the Sony with pktcdvd; although I can read and write files to some extent, it sporadically fails and often leaves the discs unusable save for a reformat afterwards. Has anyone had any experiences, positive or negative, with the Teac CD-524E (CD-RW EIDE, 40x read, 24x record, 10x write), regarding Linux packet writing or in general? This seems to be the most attractive drive available, with support for Mt. Rainier pending a firmware upgrade. Thank you for any advice you can give me. Patch for kernels 2.4.7+

Happy New Year for all the members and developers on the list! Where can I get a copy of a packet-cd kernel patch for recent kernels (newer than 2.4.7). I had bad experiences with 0.0.2o-pre1 in the past on 2.4.7, but those could be hardware related. Now I decided to give it a try again. I browsed myself through the archive, and it became clear, that I need a more-or-less up-to-date patch, not that 0.0.2o-pre1 which can be found on kernel.org. I also noticed, that Peter Osterlund is the person, who keeps appropriate patches for kernels of interest. But I simply can't access his homepage. I even't couldn't access the top level domain. His former place was cleaned, except for a notice. I haven't managed to found another place where these patches may be downloaded from, yet. Any kind of suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Or is this just a New Year's gift for Peter Osterlund from his ISP? Thx, Attila Toth

problems formatting with cdrwtool

Hello, I've just started trying to see if I can get packet writing to work with my HP 8230 CDWriter. I applied packet-2.4.17.patch to the 2.4.17 kernel, recompiled. The CD Writer is recognised and maps to /dev/sr1. Under the new kernel I ran "cdrwtool -d /dev/sr1 -t 4 -q" to prepare the CD-RW for writing. I'm using cdrwtool from the usftools package, v 0.9.4 (Debian version 0.9.4-6). cdrwtool got as far as: ============================================ using device /dev/sr1 setting speed to 4 cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize! 4085KB internal buffer setting write speed to 4x Settings for /dev/sr1: Fixed packets, size 32 Mode-2 disc I'm going to do a quick setup of /dev/sr1. The disc is going to be blanked and formatted with one big track. All data on the device will be lost!! Press CTRL-C to cancel now. Initiating quick disc blank Disc capacity is 275744 blocks (551488KB/538MB) Formatting track ============================================ And it's been stuck there for more than half an hour so far. The green light on the CD writer was flashing for much of the time, but has just turned off. I don't know if that indicates normal activity, or if the drive has timed out and switched itself off after a long period of inactivity. The cdrwtool command has still not returned, ps gives it status "D" (uninteruptible sleep, IO related). Is there anything wrong that I'm doing, or anything else I should check to get it working? Any other paths to setting up the CD-RW other than "cdrwtool -q" ? Or do I just have to accept that packet writing is yet broken for my CD writer?
