success and questions

Hi; Got a cd-rw mounted read/write and working with packet-cd. Using an atapi philips PCRW804. The sourceforge web page seems to be very out of date, but I did manage to find a patch vs. 2.4.18-pre4. Some questions that come to mind: Is this patch already integrated into various distributions? When will it go into the mainline? What is the status on CD-R support? Paul set(a)pobox.com

disk capacity

hello I have a Yamaha 8424S and the latest patch works great for me but I have a question, I think it has already been discussed on this list but I haven't found the answer... when I quick blank the disk, the capacity reported by cdrwtool is 441MB (226240 blocks ) and it should be about 530MB (275000 blocks) is it possible to force the blocks number when quickformatting the media? I use the 2.4.18-pre3 patch from Peter Osterlund and the udf tools are version 0.9.5 -- biou

Hi Sergiy. You get errors because Red Hat's 2.4.7-10 isn't pristine 2.4.7. Most distributions ship with heavily modified kernels. I'd suggest 2.4.17 sources from ftp.kernel.org with Peter's patches. Recent patches are at http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/patches/packet/ -- 0(a)pervalidus.{net, dyndns.org}

Hello Recently i buy CDRW drive (MItsumi 4805 ) and try to UDF writing get worked. Reading UDF CDRW disks works pretty fine. I have 2.4.7-10 kernel (RH 7.2), gcc-2.95-3. Six days ago i have download patches packet-0.0.2m , packet-0.0.2o-pre1 and tries to apply patch to kernel (2.4.7-10) source tree: patch -p1 < packet-0.0.2*-* and as result see many messages about rejected string of patch code (elevator.c, ide-cd.c, ..). Whats up ? Should i download 2.4.7 kernel source or i'm doing something wrong ? Please show me the right way to solve the problems . Thank you. Regards, Sergiy Kudryk. P.S. Sony CRX175A - Success

Managed to get my Sony CRX175A working. Used SCSI emulation mode - didn't have it properly configured last time. A word of warning - DO NOT use packet writing without SCSI emulation, it'll toast the disc's contents randomly. I have uploaded a new packet patch for kernel 2.4.18-pre2 to: http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/patches/packet/packet-2.4.18-pre2.patch.… There are two performance improvements: * The 2.4.18-pre2 kernel has a fix to better sort the request queue when requests can not be merged. This fix will in some cases improve write performance, because previously the same packet was sometimes written more than once to the disc. * File-level read-ahead has been enabled for the pktcdvd device. Pktsetup - running it without a CD in the drive.

Looking over the changelogs, I see that the pktcdvd modules was tweaked to only configure when there is a CD/DVD/CD-R(W)/DVD-RW in the drive. Why is this? As long as using pktsetup requires a medium in the CD/DVD drive, automatically, (ie - via /etc/rc.d) setting up Packet-CD is precluded. I'd like either: a) This feature to be removed. Since there isn't any real reason to require a CD/DVD, or at least none that I know of, it would be a lot simpler if this wasn't necessary. b) A kernel option to require/not require a medium in the drive when setting up packet writing. or c) Someone tell me what I need to change in the kernel sources so that no medium required for setting up packet writing. No need for a patch, I'd just like to know what I should change. (not a programmer, but I have a minimal understanding of C, so it shouldn't be a problem if it is only being checked with an if statement). Thanks in advance for any assistance.
