SuSE Security Announcement
Package: shadow/login
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:034
Date: Tuesday, Oct 23rd 2001 18:00 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
Vulnerability Type: local privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 2
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: most linux systems, common problem on
linux-like systems.
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: shadow/login
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Multiple Linux vendors have issued security announcements about failures
of the /bin/login program to properly initialize the privileges of an
authenticated user if the PAM module pam_limits is enabled.
The bug has been categorized as a sequence bug, and is located in the
code of the login program itself: A call to getpwnam(3) returns a pointer
to a struct passwd, and the data is being used. Then, a call to PAM
routines cause getpwnam(3) to be called again, but beyond the programmer's
control or knowledge. The pointer as returned by the first getpwnam(3)
remains the same, but the data may be different. By consequence, the
data is in an undefined state. The error appears with the pam_limits
PAM module only because other PAM modules do not call getpwnam(3).
SuSE developers did not succeed in reproducing the error on SuSE Linux
installations since SuSE distributions do not come with the standard
login implementation from the util-linux collection. Instead, a version
maintained by Thorsten Kukuk <kukuk(a)suse.de> is used. This login
implementation may cause wrong group IDs to be set in very rare cases.
The harm of this bug is therefore considerably small on SuSE Linux.
However, we provide fixed rpm packages that remedy the problem. Since
the bug is not limited to the login program but to all programs that
authenticate users, more security announcements in this field are to
be expected. The Linux vendors cooperate to share the workload that
results from the audit of these programs.
To install the updates, please download the update package for your
distribution and use the command 'rpm -Uhv file.rpm' to apply the update.
Please run "SuSEconfig" after performing the package update to make sure
that the permissions of your files are configured as the security
settings of your installation define. Alternatively, if you have disabled
SuSEconfig, check for the permissions of the files /usr/bin/chage,
/usr/bin/chfn, /usr/bin/chsh, /usr/bin/expiry, /usr/bin/gpasswd and
/usr/bin/passwd to suit your needs. Setting these executeables to 4755
owned by root enables their functionality, removing the setuid bit
(chmod -s) disables it.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- Linux kernel
Security bugs have been found in both the 2.2 and 2.4 kernel series
of all currently supported SuSE Linux distributions (6.3-7.3), including
the freshly appeared SuSE-7.3. These bugs allow a local attacker to gain
root privileges, but there is no remote attack as of now.
As a temporary workaround, it is possible for experienced users of
linux-like systems to disable all setuid bits from all files in the
installed system using a find command with a -exec option.
We are currently in the process of testing the update kernels of both
2.2 (2.2.19) and 2.4 (2.4.13) series to make sure that these update
kernels will have the same level of stability and robustness as expected
from SuSE linux systems. The official kernel rpm packages will be
announced in a SuSE Security announcement during the second half of
this week. In the meanwhile, the directory
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/ contains the preliminary
update packages for testing (2.2.19 packages will be available shortly).
Please proceed with the update as described in
http://www.suse.de/de/support/security/2001_018_kernel_txt.txt
and report any problems that you may find to feedback(a)suse.de.
- openssh
After stabilizing the openssh package, updates for the distributions
6.4-7.2 are currently being prepared. The update packages fix a security
problem related to the recently discovered problems with source ip
based access restrictions in a user's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 file.
The packages will appear shortly on our ftp servers. Please note that
packages for the distributions 6.3 and up including 7.0 containing
cryptographic software are located on the German ftp server ftp.suse.de,
all other packages can be found on ftp.suse.com at the usual location.
- htdig (ht://Dig)
htdig, a powerful indexing and information gathering tool for a webserver,
has been found vulnerable to a weakness where commandline options can
be passed on to the cgi program as a result of weak runtime environment
checking. The security announcement by Thomas Biege is waiting for the
update packages to reach the ftp-server (currently transferring).
Please continue to watch the suse-security-announce mailing list for
new security announcements.

3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information
- Package authenticity verification:
SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over
the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important
to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be
sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing
the package. There are two verification methods that can be used
independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded
file or rpm package:
1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement.
2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package.
1) execute the command
md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm>
after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors.
Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the
announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is
cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de),
the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package.
We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the
announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt
and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all
md5 sums for the files are useless.
2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity
of an rpm package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the
filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the toplevel directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: lprold
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:033
Date: Wed Oct 10 11:03:12 GMT 2001
Affected SuSE versions: [6.1, 6.2,] 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: bufferoverflow/local privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 6
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: Other Linux distributions, *BSD
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Several problems in lprold
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
ISS X-Force reported an overflow in BSD's lineprinter daemon shipped with
the lprold package in SuSE Linux. Due to missing bounds checks in the
lockfile processing function, internal buffers may overflow. Bounds checks
have been added to fix that problem.
Additionally the SuSE Security Team uncovered other security releated bugs
in lpd while analyzing lpd source after receiving the X-Force advisory.
These bugs allows users on machines listed in /etc/hosts.lpd or
/etc/hosts.equiv to chown any file on the system running lpd to any user.
In order to trigger any of the fixed bugs (including the overflow) the
attackers machine must be listed in one of these two access-files and the
attacker usually needs root on these machines due to the privileged-port
requirement.
Please download the packages and verify them as described in section 3.
After successful authentication you can update your packages with
the command `rpm -Uhv file.rpm'.
As root invoke the command "/etc/rc.d/lpd stop" to shutdown the old lpd
daemon and "/etc/rc.d/lpd start" afterwards to start the patched daemon.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- sftp/openssh:
Our last announcement SuSE-SA:2001:032 about WindowMaker claimed
that the openssh packages on SuSE distributions do not contain the
sftp-server as described by Peter W <peterw(a)usa.net> on the bugtraq
mailing list. This is wrong: The program is indeed included on all
recent openssh packages of SuSE Linux distributions, starting with
SuSE Linux 6.4 where the openssh package appeared first.
We will provide fixes for the distributions 6.4 through 7.2 as soon as
possible on our ftp server (ftp.suse.de for 6.4-7.0, ftp.suse.com for
7.1 and newer) and announce these fixes in the section 2) of an
upcoming security announcement.
Please note that this error has been corrected shortly before the
release of the upcoming SuSE Linux 7.3 which will arrive in the stores
by the end of this week.
We apologize for this error (Roman Drahtmueller, SuSE Security).
- squid
Malformed requests on the client side can cause the squid proxy server
to die, resulting in a denial of service attack that can be launched
from the internal network if squid is used at the edge of an internal
network to proxy requests to the internet.
We are in the process of testing the update packages that are
available on the ftp server shortly. SuSE Security will issue a
dedicated announcement for this issue shortly.
- devfs/kernel
SuSE Linux ships the userspace utilities for the use of the devfs
filesystem in the linux kernel, but neither the utilities nor the
filesystem interface for device files itself have been used in SuSE
Linux up to date. The decision to not actively use devfsd in the
distribution framework is based on security considerations.
For these reasons, SuSE products are not susceptible to the lately
found security problems in the devfs implementation.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: wmaker/WindowMaker
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:032
Date: Thursday, September 20th 2001 15:10 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: (6.0, 6.1, 6.2,) 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: remote privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: all Unix systems running
Window Maker < 0.65.1
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Window Maker
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The window manager Window Maker was found vulnerable to a buffer overflow
due to improper bounds checking when setting the window title.
An attacker can remotely exploit this buffer overflow by using malicious
web page titles or terminal escape sequences to set a excessively long
window title.
This attack can lead to remote command execution with the privileges of
the user running Window Maker.
A temporary fix does not exist; we recommend to update your system with
the new RPM from our FTP server.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
After installing the updated RPM
- run /sbin/SuSEconfig (the central configuration utility in SuSE Linux
distributions)
- restart your window manager. If this is not possible for configura-
tional reasons, restart your x-session.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- SuSE Linux distributions do not contain the sftp-server as described by
Peter W <peterw(a)usa.net> (Message-ID: <20010918082406.M14947(a)usa.net>)
on the bugtraq mailing list and are therefore not vulnerable to the
problems found.
- A new worm called "Nimda" has been reported in the wild. It attacks
IIS webservers and uploads a file called "readme.eml" which is being
downloaded by the client's browser. Some versions of the Internet
Explorer even execute this file without the user's knowledge. A
temporary workaround for sites that use a squid proxy to access the
internet would be to add these three lines to the /etc/squid.conf
file:
# filter Nimda worm files:
acl nimda urlpath_regex -i \.eml$
acl nimda urlpath_regex -i \.nws$
http_access deny nimda
Do not forget to reload your squid server (/usr/sbin/rcsquid reload)!
______________________________________________________________________________
We advise against subscribing to lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security annoucements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: apache-contrib
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:31
Date: Monday, September 10th 2001 12:30 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: authentication bypass
Severity (1-10): 3
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: yes
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: mod_auth_mysql
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The Apache module mod_auth_mysql 1.4,which is shipped since SuSE Linux 7.1,
was found vulnerable to possible bypass authentication by MySQL command
injection.
An adversary could insert MySQL commands along with a password and these
commands will be interpreted by MySQL while mod_auth_mysql is doing the
password lookup in the database. A positive authentication could be returned.
Note, that this bug has not yet been proven exploitable so far.
A temporary fix does not exist; we recommend to update your system with the
new RPM from our FTP server.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
After installing the updated RPM run
- rcapache restart
- SuSEconfig

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
______________________________________________________________________________
We advise against subscribing to lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: screen
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:030
Date: Wednesday, September 5 2001 18:00 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: (6.0, 6.1, 6.2) 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: local root compromise
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: some systems with the screen program
installed setuid root
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: screen
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
screen is a terminal multiplexer program that allows reattaching to
a detached session as well as multi-attached (shared) sessions.
The screen package allows a local attacker to obtain root privileges if
the /usr/bin/screen command is installed setuid root and if a directory
below /tmp/screens/ exists.
The screen program needs root permissions from the setuid-root bit for
two reasons: multi-attached sessions are only possible with root
privileges, and writing terminal allocation information to /var/run/utmp
(the who(1) and finger(1) commands). If the screen command is not running
with special privileges, all functionality except these two features will
continue to work, but the local root compromise will not be possible.
In order to provide the features mentioned, the screen package used to
be installed setuid-root in SuSE Linux distributions.
The update packages that we provide for the supported distributions 6.3,
6.4, 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 eliminate the error in the source code. In addition
to that, the rpm package does not contain the setuid-bit on the screen
program any more. If there is any more security-related bug in the screen
package or libraries that it is linked against to be found in the future,
these errors will not open local security holes any more. Users of the
screen package who need the multi-attach feature must enable it again by
adding the setuid-bit to the /usr/bin/screen file.
Please note that you should reflect the changes to permissions in the
files /etc/permissions*. If unsure, use the setting "secure local" for
the variable PERMISSION_SECURITY in /etc/rc.config and execute "SuSEconfig"
as root. Alternatively, change the settings for the screen program in
/etc/permissions* and run "chkstat -set <file>" for each file that you
need. Use the command "rpm -qlv screen | grep /usr/bin" to find out which
files to add to the permissions file (/usr/bin/screen is a symlink).
The authors of screen have released the new version screen-3.9.10 that
fixes the multi-attach-error, and some other uncritical bug. Our update
packages contain the necessary patches applied to the version as shipped
with the original distribution.
We thank Christian HĂĽrgemann <Bzrker(a)t-online.de> for reporting this
error on Monday, 3 Sep 2001.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- sendmail
SuSE Security announcement SuSE-SA:2001:028 (sendmail) offers a sendmail
update package for the 7.0-i386 distribution that has a lower version
number than the package in the tree for ftp installation on ftp.suse.com.
If your update rpm command fails with a complaint that the version
installed is newer than the one you wish to be installed, then please
use the "--oldpackage" commandline option to rpm:
"rpm --oldpackage -Uhv sendmail-*.rpm".
We are correcting the problem as soon as possible. The new package
will be named sendmail-8.11.0-10.i386.rpm and should appear on the ftp
server within the next 11 hours. The *-10 package is technically identical
to the *-5 package that is currently available on our ftp server.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: nkitb/nkitserv/telnetd
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:029
Date: Mon Sep 3 12:55:58 MEST 2001
Affected SuSE versions: [6.1, 6.2,] 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: remote code execution
Severity (1-10): 8
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: All UN*X Systems shipping BSD derived telnetd
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Buffer overflow in in.telnetd
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The telnet server which is shipped with SuSE distributions contains a
remotely exploitable buffer-overflow within its telnet option
negotiation code.
This bug is wide-spread on UN*X systems and affects almost
all implementations of telnet daemons available.
SuSE 7.2 distribution ships the telnet-server package which
contains the vulnerable telnet daemon. This package has been fixed.
The SuSE Linux distributions 6.3 and 6.4 contain versions and
implementations of the telnet-daemon that are vulnerable, but the
complexity of the code requires a full source code audit of the
software. In order not to further delay the release of the packages
for the SuSE Linux 7.x distributions, we recommend to disable the
telnet daemon on the 6.x distributions. This can be done by
commenting out the line in /etc/inetd.conf that starts with
"telnet", and then reloading the inetd configuration using the
command "killall -1 inetd". Another option is to not start the inetd
in the first place if you do not need any of the services provided
by the inetd daemon. Disabling inetd permanently involves killing
the running inetd process ("killall -TERM inetd") and setting the
variable START_INETD in /etc/rc.config to "no" (as opposed to
"yes").
Disabling the telnet service is the preliminary solution/workaround
against the problems with the telnetd daemon. We hope to be able to
provide a better solution.
The SuSE Linux distributions 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 have similar
implementations of in.telnetd, and for all of these distributions
there are update packages available. Please note that the package
that contains the /usr/sbin/in.telnetd program (the server
program) has changed over the different releases of the SuSE Linux
distribution. In the 7.0 and 7.1 distributions the package is called
"nkitserv". The 7.2 distribution lists the telnet server in the
package "telnet-server".
Please download the packages and verify them as described in section 3.
After successfull authentication you can update your packages with
the command `rpm -Uhv file.rpm'.
Further action should not be necessary to activate the update since
the in.telnetd daemon is started from a new by inetd upon every
accepted connection from the network.
Regardless of the availiability of fixed packages of the
telnet-daemon, SuSE Security strongly recommend to disable the
telnet service if you do not use it. In addition to that, only
cryptographically protected protocols such as secure shell (ssh,
package openssh) can be an efficient countermeasure against sniffing
and spoofing type attacks. Due to significantly more comfort (such
as X11-forwarding, multiple authentication methods, ...), the
transition to ssh should be worth the effort in any case.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- w3m
The w3m browser contains a buffer-overflow which allows remote-attackers
to execute arbitrary code or to crash the w3m web-client when viewing
special crafted sites. Please update to the newest w3m packages available
on the ftp-server.
- dip
The dip program is executable as setuid root program for users in the
"dialout" group, a privilege that has been issued by the administrator for
a trusted user group. This bug will be corrected in future releases of the
SuSE Linux distribution.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: sendmail
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:028
Date: Thursday, Aug 23rd 2001 18:10 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: local root compromise
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: systems using the sendmail package
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: sendmail
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Cade Cairns of Securityfocus discovered a vulnerability in the sendmail
program, the widely spread MTA used in Unix- and Unix-like systems.
A local user can write arbitrary data to the process memory, resulting
in user-controlled code to be executed as user root.
Please note that this is a _local_ vulnerability: Local shell access
is needed for the attacker to be able to take advantage of this error.
The /usr/sbin/sendmail program is installed set-uid root in most
installations. This special privilege is needed for the sendmail program
to operate properly. The attack pattern involves running sendmail to
make use of the setuid-bit.
Please note that this is the first sendmail security problem since 1997.
In this case, the vulnerability can be classified as a commandline
processing bug while running with extended (root) privilege.
The error itself is a result of a comparison between a signed and an
unsigned integer when checking user-supplied data from the sendmail
command line: A high unsigned value is being considered a negative
signed value. A subsequent comparison is being evaluated the wrong way.
These errors are expected to make up a new class of vulnerabilities for
programs written in C in the near future.
The supported SuSE Linux distributions 6.3 and 6.4 use a sendmail of
version 8.9.3. According to Sendmail Inc., this version is not
affected by this signedness bug.
The SuSE Linux distributions 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 use sendmail version
8.11.x. All 7.x distributions are affected by the problem.
SuSE provides update packages for the affected distributions. Please
download the update package for your distribution and use the command
'rpm -Uhv file.rpm' to apply the update.
It is recommended to stop the running sendmail process(es) before
applying the update. Use the command 'rcsendmail stop' to do this,
and 'rcsendmail start' to restart the service after the update has
been applied. Since the update packages only fix the security problem
from this announcement, no reconfiguration should be necessary.
SPECIAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
The sendmail package needs one out of two commands to be executed after
package installation. Use the commands
SuSEconfig
or, alternatively (if you have disabled SuSEconfig in /etc/rc.config),
chkstat -set /etc/permissions.d/sendmail
to set the permissions of the sendmail package files correctly. Without
these permission changes, the /usr/sbin/sendmail program will not operate
properly. (Side note: All of the commands above have to be run as root!)

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions, Workarounds and misc:
- ftp server
Our ftp server ftp.suse.com has been reorganized. The changes in
particular are:
* The discontinued distributions (SuSE Linux before (and including) 6.2)
have moved to an own tree: /pub/suse/discontinued/<arch>.
The tree there is built exactly like the tree for the currently
supported distributions (6.3 and up).
This change has been made to keep users from automatically applying
updates against old problems that have been superceded by newer updates
which are not available for the discontinued distributions.
* The /pub/suse/<arch>/{KDE,KDE2,GNOME,X} directories have been moved
to an own tree: /pub/suse/<arch>/supplementary/. The KDE directory
has become famous in the KDE scene because it contains the latest
KDE packages compiled for a SuSE distribution.
This has been done to point out that the packages in this directory
have been built for the respective distribution, they are tested ok,
but since these packages have never been part of the distribution
they are built for, there is no support for them; the packages are
provided as-is.
* During the next days, all packages under the /pub/suse/<arch>/update/
tree will be gpg-signed with the build(a)suse.de DSA key (see section 3
of this announcement).
Currently, most of the formerly existing directories that have been moved
are now still visible through a symlink, pointing at a directory with
a README.
The directory paths to the update packages for the supported distributions
have _not_ changed.
We kindly request mirror admins to adopt the changes to their trees.
If you run a publically accessible mirror of ftp.suse.com, you are
invited to send a mail to ftpadmin(a)suse.com so that you are being
notified of such changes in advance.
- in.telnetd
A buffer overflow vulnerability has been found in the in.telnetd telned
daemon, a service that is enabled by default in all SuSE Linux
distributions. The vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to gain root
access to your system. Many unix- and unix-like operating systems are
affected by this or a similar problem.
There are update packages for the SuSE Linux distributions 7.1 and 7.2
on our ftp server. The packages for the 7.1 distribution are called
"nkitserv", for the 7.2 distributions, the name is telnet-server.
For completeness, we also provide the other packages that are made from
the same source rpm. Since these packages do not fix a security problem,
there is no reason to list them here.
We are working on a suitable solution for the 7.0 and 6.x distributions,
while it has turned out that a fix for these distributions is non-trivial
because a different code base has been used for these packages.
telnet is an unencrypted protocol that offers many attack possibilities.
If at all possible, please deactivate your telnetd by commenting it out
in /etc/inetd.conf (killall -HUP inetd afterwards to make inetd reload
its configuration file!). We recommend to use one of the two ssh
implementations on our distributions as a substitute of the telnet
protocol. Clients are available on the internet for most platforms and
operating systems.
An announcement will be released soon that addresses the problem in
in.telnetd.
- Yesterday (Wednesday, 20010822) Bob Vickers (Dept of Computer Science,
University of London) reported a locally exploitable security hole in
the script /etc/init.d/boot. The critical function of the script is
supposed to remove files from the defined temporary directories of the
system as specified in /etc/rc.config (TMP_DIRS_TO_CLEAR in
/etc/rc.config) if $CLEAR_TMP_DIRS_AT_BOOTUP (also from /etc/rc.config)
is set to "yes". Unfortunately, the script does not take into account
that directories can contain newlines and other non-standard characters.
By consequence, the script can be tricked to removing files elsewhere.
This bug is present in the SuSE Linux 7.2 version only, available for the
Intel i386 platform. The feature responsible for this bug is disabled
by default in a SuSE Linux 7.2 installation and must be manually
activated for the bug to impose any risk.
We have fixed the problem in an update package that is available at
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.2/a1/aaa_base-2001.8.23-0.i386.rpm
Please download and install the update package using the command
rpm -Uhv aaa_base-2001.8.23-0.i386.rpm
Disregard the messages on standard output if you have the gpg package
installed: The postinstall script adds the DSA key build(a)suse.de
to root's gpg public keyring if this hasn't been done already. This
key is also listed below.
A source rpm is also available at the usual location.
We will not issue a dedicated security announcement for this problem.
We thank Bob Vickers for reporting the problem to security(a)suse.de.
- openssl
A weakness was found in the PRNG (Pseudo Random Number Generator) of
the openssl package. As far as we could determine, the bug has no
effect on the packages that are compiled against a library from the
openssl package. We will however provide update packages that fix
the found problems. Since openssl packages are not (backwards-)
compatible to any other newer version, we have to fix the package for
each distribution seperately. This takes some time. A special announce-
ment will be issued as soon as all packages are available.
- more announcements are in our queue. Please keep watching activity on
the suse-security-announce(a)suse.com mailinglist (more information below).
______________________________________________________________________________
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: sdb
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:027
Date: Monday, August 20th 2001 10:00 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: [6.0, 6.1, 6.2,] 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: local (maybe remote) privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 4
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: no
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: sdbsearch.cgi
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Sdbsearch.cgi is Perl script which is part of the sdb package of SuSE Linux
was found vulnerable by using untrustworthy client input (HTTP_REFERER).
By exploiting this trust an attacker could force the sdbsearch.cgi script
to open a malicious keylist file which includes keywords and filenames.
By replacing the filename in the keylist file with the Perl pipe followed
by arbitrary shell commands the sdbsearch.cgi would execute these commands
when trying to open these 'filenames'.
Note, that the attacker needs local access to the machine to store the
keylist file on the server running sdbsearch.cgi. Misconfigured ftp
accounts, trojan tar balls or RPM files could also be used.
Sdbsearch.cgi on SuSE Linux 7.1 and 7.2 is not exploitable, because
Perl's taint mode is used, nevertheless the HTTP_REFERER variable is still
unfiltered and fully trusted. So, users of SuSE Linux 7.1 and 7.2 are
not in danger but should update to avoid future attacks.
Please update your machines with the new RPMs from our ftp server.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
Please watch out for more announcements that are currently in our queue.
______________________________________________________________________________
We advise against subscribing to lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security annoucements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: fetchmail
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:026
Date: Thursday, August 16th 2001 11:30 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: [6.0, 6.1, 6.2,] 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: remote privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 6
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: yes
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: fetchmail
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Fetchmail is a tool for retrieving and forwarding mail. Two vulnerabilities
in the code of fetchmail were found in the last weeks.
1.) By sending a header with a large "To:" line a buffer overflow will
be triggered in the header parsing code.
2.) By impersonating a pop3 or imap server by using DNS spoofing
or getting control over the pop3/imap server an attacker could
trigger a buffer overflow in the pop3 and imap code of fetchmail.
All the attacker has to do is to fake a LIST response message and
providing two integers. One will used as index for a stack array
and the other one is the value written to this index.
Both vulnerabilities could be used to get remote access to the system with
the privilege of the user running fetchmail.
A temporary fix is not possible, so we suggest to install the new RPM
on your system.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
Please watch out for upcomming announcements.
______________________________________________________________________________
We advise against subscribing to security lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security annoucements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: xmcd
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:025
Date: Friday, Aug 3rd 2001 18:30 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: (6.0, 6.1, 6.2,) 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: local privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 4
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: yes
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: yes
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Cda, a setuid commandline part of xmcd, a X11/Motif audio CD player by
Ti Kan <ti(a)amb.org>, was found vulnerable by a link attack and some
bufferoverflows.
These bugs could be exploited by an adversary, who has access to the
system, to overwrite files or gain higher privileges.
As a temporary fix, just remove the setuid bit from cda:
/bin/chmod 755 /usr/X11R6/bin/cda
or let just trusted users execute cda:
/bin/chown root.trusted /usr/X11R6/bin/cda
/bin/chmod 4750 /usr/X11R6/bin/cda
Don't forget to add these changes to your /etc/permissions.local file
Users of SuSE 7.2 with permissions.secure or permissions.paranoid
activated are safe, because setuid is already removed.
Thanks to Paul Starzetz <paul(a)starzetz.de>, who reportes the link attack
and to Ti Kan <ti(a)amb.org>, the author of xmcd, for his fast response
and help.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- openssl
Currently we check are checking the dependencies of openssl to other
dynamic or static linked applications on SuSE Linux. An announcement
will be released soon.
- dqs
dex(a)raza-mexicana.org has found an exploitable buffer overflow bug in
the dsh program from the dqs package on SuSE Linux distributions.
To workaround the problem, do "chmod -s /usr/bin/dsh" and change the
files /etc/permissions* to reflect the change. If you do not need the
dqs package, then deinstall it (rpm -e dqs).
Packages for most of the supported SuSE Linux distributions are
available at the usual location ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/<arch>/<dist>
for download and installation/update. Do not forget to change the files
/etc/permissions* to remove the suid-bit from the dsh program. Please
note that we will not issue a dedicated security announcement for this
specific bug.
- pcp
Paul Starzetz discovered a security weakness in the setuid root program
/usr/share/pcp/bin/pmpost. The common library in pcp trusts the
environment that has been supplied by the user, regardless of privileged
execution or not. By consequence, a user can specify the configuration
file and therefore write to files owned by root. The problem is not based
on insecurely following symlinks as stated by Paul Starzetz.
The pcp package is not installed by default in SuSE Linux distributions.
We have provided update packages for the SuSE Linux distributions version
7.1 and 7.2 that remove the setuid bit from the pmpost binary. Versions
before SuSE-7.1 were not affected because the setuid bit was not set.
We thank Keith Owens and Mark Goodwin from Silicon Graphics for responding
quickly and for publishing a new version of the pcp package which will
be included in future releases of the SuSE Linux distribution. For more
information see the /usr/share/doc/packages/pcp directory of your SuSE
Linux installation after installing the update package, or go to
obtained from http://oss.sgi.com/projects/pcp/download .
Please note that there will not be a dedicated security announcement
for this specific bug.
- fetchmail (fetchml)
New fetchmail packages are available on the ftp server. The packages
cure a buffer overflow that can be exploited by sending a victim a
specially designed email, waiting for the victim's fetchmail program
to pick up the email. We are preparing a security announcement for this
problem.
- openssh
update packages for the openssh package after (and including) SuSE-6.4
are available on our ftp servers ftp.suse.de (for < 7.1) or
ftp.suse.com (for >= 7.1). We are currently checking for a non-security
related irregularity in sshd's behaviour under faulty setup conditions.
- exim
SuSE Linux distributions do not contain the exim Mail Transport Agent
(See http://www.exim.org/ for details) and are therefore not susceptible
to the recently found security-related bugs.
- webmin
SuSE Linux distributions do not contain the webmin administration
web frontend (See http://www.webmin.org/ for details) and are therefore
not vulnerable to the recently found security-related problems in the
software.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
