______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The previous zlib update for CAN-2005-2096 fixed a flaw in zlib that
could allow a carefully crafted compressed stream to crash an
application. While the original patch corrected the reported
overflow, Markus Oberhumer discovered additional ways a stream could
trigger an overflow. This update fixes those problems as well.
This issue is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-1849.
Since only zlib 1.2.x is affected, older SUSE products are not
affected by this problem.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all programs using zlib after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
Our maintenance customers are notified individually. The packages are
offered for installation from the maintenance web.

- See SUSE Security Summary Report

6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file where you saved the
announcement. The output for a valid signature looks like:
gpg: Signature made <DATE> using RSA key ID 3D25D3D9
gpg: Good signature from "SuSE Security Team <security(a)suse.de>"
where <DATE> is replaced by the date the document was signed.
If the security team's key is not contained in your key ring, you can
import it from the first installation CD. To import the key, use the
command
gpg --import gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04.asc
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and the integrity of
a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered
with.
There are two verification methods that can be used independently from
each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or RPM package:
1) Using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package
2) MD5 checksums as provided in this announcement
1) The internal rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the
authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the
filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it
contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on
RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during
installation. You can also find it on the first installation CD and at
the end of this announcement.
2) If you need an alternative means of verification, use the md5sum
command to verify the authenticity of the packages. Execute the command
md5sum <filename.rpm>
after you downloaded the file from a SUSE FTP server or its mirrors.
Then compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the
SUSE security announcement. Because the announcement containing the
checksums is cryptographically signed (by security(a)suse.de) the
checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package if the
signature of the announcement is valid. Note that the md5 sums
published in the SUSE Security Announcements are valid for the
respective packages only. Newer versions of these packages cannot be
verified.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Solved Security Vulnerabilities
To avoid flooding mailing lists with SUSE Security Announcements for minor
issues, SUSE Security releases weekly summary reports for the low profile
vulnerability fixes. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list md5 sums
or download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for
more severe vulnerabilities.
Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP
server and via the YaST Online Update.
- apache2
apache2 was prone to so called "HTTP Request Smuggling" attacks
(CAN-2005-2088) and contained an off-by-one overflow whilst printing
CRL information (CAN-2005-1268).
All SUSE LINUX based products are affected.
- clamav
clamav contained several integer overflows allowing for heap buffer
overflows. clamav has been updated to version 0.86.2 to fix those
problem.
SUSE Linux 9.1-9.3 and SLES9 are affected.
- fetchmail
A buffer overflow allowed a malicious POP3 server to possibly
execute arbitrary code via long UIDL responses (CAN-2005-2335).
Due to optimizations performed by gcc the bug is most likely not
exploitable with the fetchmail packages on SUSE Linux though.
All SUSE LINUX based products are affected.
- MozillaFirefox
Mozilla Firefox has been updated to version 1.0.6 to fix several security
issues:
MFSA 2005-56 Code execution through shared function objects
MFSA 2005-55 XHTML node spoofing
MFSA 2005-54 Javascript prompt origin spoofing
MFSA 2005-53 Standalone applications can run arbitrary code through the browser
MFSA 2005-52 Same origin violation: frame calling top.focus()
MFSA 2005-51 The return of frame-injection spoofing
MFSA 2005-50 Possibly exploitable crash in InstallVersion.compareTo()
MFSA 2005-49 Script injection from Firefox sidebar panel using data:
MFSA 2005-48 Same-origin violation with InstallTrigger callback
MFSA 2005-47 Code execution via "Set as Wallpaper"
MFSA 2005-46 XBL scripts ran even when Javascript disabled
MFSA 2005-45 Content-generated event vulnerabilities
SUSE Linux 9.0-9.3 and Novell Linux Desktop 9 are affected.
- ruby
A bug in the XML-RPC library allowed remote attackers to execute
arbitrary code (CAN-2005-1992).
All SUSE LINUX based products are affected
- ampache
A bug in the PEAR::XML_RPC library allowed remote attackers to
pass arbitrary php code to the eval() function (CAN-2005-1921).
All SUSE LINUX products are affected
- squirrelmail
A cross-site-scripting issue (CAN-2005-1769) and a bug that allowed
malicious attackers to change sessions variables of other users
(CAN-2005-2095) have been fixed.
All SUSE LINUX products are affected
______________________________________________________________________________
2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds
- kdelibs3
The Kate file editor saved backup copies of edited files with
default permissions instead of the possibly more restrictive
permissions of the original (CAN-2005-1920).
SUSE Linux 9.1-9.3 and SLES9 are affected.
- cups
Attackers could bypass access restrictions for printers with names
that contain both uppercase and lowercase letters (CAN-2004-2154).
SUSE Linux 8.2-9.0 and SLES8 are affected.
- pam_krb5
The previous security update for pam_krb5 broke logins that have
their home on AFS.
SUSE Linux 9.0-9.3 and SLES9 are affected.
- ethereal
A buffer overflow, a format string vulnerability and several other
bugs that can cause ethereal to crash have been found
(CAN-2005-2360, CAN-2005-2361, CAN-2005-2362, CAN-2005-2363,
CAN-2005-2364, CAN-2005-2365, CAN-2005-2366, CAN-2005-2367).
All SUSE Linux based products are affected.
- various kernel security problems
Various security problems were found in both the 2.4 and 2.6 Linux
kernels.
We are testing updates for all current issues and will release
packages soon.
All SUSE Linux based products are affected.

3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
The internal RPM package signatures provide an easy way to verify the
authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the
filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it
contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based
distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can
also find it on the first installation CD and included at the end of this
announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
This update fixes a buffer overflow in Acrobat Reader versions 5,
where an attacker could execute code by providing a handcrafted PDF
to the viewer.
The Acrobat Reader 5 versions of SUSE Linux 9.0 up to 9.2, SUSE
Linux Enterprise Server 9 and Novell Linux Desktop 9 were upgraded
to Acrobat Reader 7.
Unfortunately this version upgrade introduces new dependencies. Please
use the YaST module "Install or Remove Software" to check if there
are new dependencies and install the required packages.
Since Adobe does no longer provide updated packages that work on SUSE
Linux Enterprise Server 8, United Linux 1, and SUSE Linux Desktop 1
we are unable to provide fixed packages for these products.
The SUSE Security Team strongly advises to deinstall the acroread
package on these platforms and use alternate PDF viewers like xpdf,
kpdf, gpdf or gv.
Since this attack could be done via E-Mail messages or web pages,
this should be considered to be remote exploitable.
This issue is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-1625.
2) Solution or Work-Around
Install the upgraded packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
On SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and SUSE Linux Desktop 1, deinstall
the acroread package using:
rpm -e acroread
On all other platforms, start the YaST "Install and Remove Software" dialog
and solve potential conflicts that are the results of this version upgrade.

- tcpdump remote denial of service attack
Various bugs were fixed in tcpdump that would cause tcpdump to
run into infinite loops or crash when analyzing certain specially
crafted packets. These bugs are considered security relevant as
tcpdump is often used to analyze security relevant network traffic.
All SUSE Linux products are affected.
This is tracked by the Mitre CVE IDs CAN-2005-1278, CAN-2005-1279,
and CAN-2005-1280.
- perl-Net-Server remote denial of service attack
A format string problem was found in the logging routines of the
perl-Net-Server perl module collection. This could lead to a remote
attacker being able to crash a server using the perl-Net-Server
module.
This is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-1127.
SUSE Linux versions 8.2 up to 9.3 are affected by this problem.
- gaim remote denial of service attack
Following security problems were fixed in the instant messenger
gaim, which allowed malicious users to crash other users' gaim
client. Mitre CVE IDs and affected products are listed below.
- Crashes via malformed MSN malformed message (CAN-2005-1934,
CAN-2005-1262, SUSE LINUX >= 9.1).
- Crash via specially named file sent via Yahoo (CAN-2005-1269, SUSE
LINUX >= 9.1).
- Crash via invalid Jabber file transfer request (CAN-2005-0967,
SUSE LINUX >= 9.1).
- Crash via special IRC messages (CAN-2005-0966, SUSE LINUX >= 9.0).
- Crashes via malformed HTML tags (CAN-2005-0965, CAN-2005-0208,
CAN-2005-0473).
- Crash via malformed SNAC packet sent via AIM/ICQ (CAN-2005-0472,
SUSE LINUX <= 9.2).
- pam_krb5 denial of service attack
Two security-related bugs were fixed in the pam_krb5. The first
bug is the use of the wrong UID to change the file-permissions on
the ticket file which causes Kerberos to stop working correctly.
The second bug can makes the PAM module crash due to a uninitialized
variable. Thanks to Ralf Müller for sending us the bug-report
and patches.
SUSE Linux versions 9.0 up to 9.3, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
and Novell Linux Desktop 9 are affected.
- dhcpcd remote denial of service attack
This update fixes a denial-of-service bug that can be triggered
remotely by sending a malformed package to crash the client.
This problem is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-1848.
All SUSE Linux products are affected.
- perl-Compress-Zlib potential denial of service attack
The perl-Compress-Zlib perl module included a copy of zlib which
is vulnerable to a denial of service attack tracked by the Mitre
CVE CAN-2005-2096. This update removed the use of the internal copy
and now uses the external version of zlib.
This affects SUSE Linux versions 9.1 up to 9.3 and SUSE Linux
Enterprise Server 9.
- cacti remote command injection
Various bugs were fixed in cacti, including three security-related
bugs:
- Cacti Authentication/Addslashes Bypass Vulnerability
- Cacti Multiple SQL Injection Vulnerabilities
- Cacti Remote Command Execution Vulnerability
Note: Please check your config.php file, the new file
config.php.rpmnew will have different options.
These issue are tracked by the Mitre CVE IDs CAN-2005-2149 and
CAN-2005-2148.
SUSE Linux versions 9.1 up to 9.3 are affected by this problem.
- krb5 remote denial of service
The MIT Kerberos implementation is prone to heap corruption
due to calling free() on random addresses (CAN-2005-1174,
MITKRB5-SA-2005-002) and by calling free() twice on the same block
(CAN-2005-1689, MITKRB5-SA-2005-003). Both bugs can be triggered
remotely and may have the potential to be exploited to execute
arbitrary code. Additionally this update fixes a crash in MIT
Kerberos V that is caused while comparing to principals/realms
without checking for NULL pointers. There is nothing known about
the exploit-ability of this bug. Thanks to Ralf Mueller for sending
us the bug-report and patches.
Only SUSE Linux Version 9.3 is affected by this problem, all earlier
products used the heimdal kerberos implementation which is not
affected by this problem.
______________________________________________________________________________
2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds
- Acrobat Reader buffer overflow.
A buffer overflow vulnerability was found in
the Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5.
We are currently building upgrades to version 7 for older
products.
SUSE Linux version 8.2 up to 9.2, SUSE Linux Enterprise Servers 8
and 9, Novell Linux Desktop 9, Open Enterprise Server 9, SUSE Linux
Desktop 1 are affected by this problem.
It is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-1625.
- Various new Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox vulnerabilities
Various new Mozilla Suite and Mozilla Firefox vulnerabilities
were reported.
We are preparing updates for these issues currently.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (FAQ)
send mail to <suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or

5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
See SUSE Security Summary Report.
6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
A bug in the PEAR::XML_RPC library allowed remote attackers to
pass arbitrary PHP code to the eval() function.
The updated php packages fix the XML::RPC bug, however several third
party PHP packages include a copy of the problematic XML::RPC code
itself and might be still vulnerable after the update.
Please check their respective websites whether the package is
vulnerable.
The following projects are known to include the XML::RPC code:
- tikiwiki
- postnuke
- drupal
- b2evolution
- b2
- phpGroupWare
- eGroupware
- Serendipity Weblog
- phpAdsNew
- Max Media Manager
This issue is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-1921.
The bug in the SUSE php packages affects SUSE Linux versions from 8.2
up to 9.3, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and Open Enterprise Server.
php4 on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 is not affected, since it was
not shipping the XML::RPC extension.
2) Solution or Work-Around
Please install the updated packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Make sure that all PHP projects you installed additionally have the
XML RPC flaw fixed.

Newer versions of these packages cannot be
verified.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.

6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
A remote buffer overflow has been fixed in the heimdal / kerberos
telnetd daemon which could lead to a remote user executing code as
root by overflowing a buffer.
This attack requires the use of the kerberized telnetd of the heimdal
suite, which is not used by default on SUSE systems.
This is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-2040.
2) Solution or Work-Around
Please install the updated packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Since the heimdal telnetd is usually started from inetd/xinetd,
no action is necessary.

Newer versions of these packages cannot be
verified.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to

5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
See SUSE Security Summary Report.
6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
A denial of service condition was fixed in the zlib library.
Any program using zlib to decompress data can be crashed by a specially
handcrafted invalid data stream. This includes web browsers or email
programs able to view PNG images (which are compressed by zlib),
allowing remote attackers to crash browser sessions or potentially
anti virus programs using this vulnerability.
This issue is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-2096.
Since only zlib 1.2.x is affected, older SUSE products are not affected
by this problem.
2) Solution or Work-Around
Install the updated packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart running programs using zlib.

Newer versions of these packages cannot be
verified.
