______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
CVS (Concurrent Versions System) is a version control system which
helps to manage concurrent editing of files by various authors.
Stefan Esser of e-matters reported a "double free" bug in CVS
server code for handling directory requests. This free() call allows
an attacker with CVS read access to compromise a CVS server.
Additionally two features ('Update-prog' and 'Checkin-prog') were
disabled to stop clients with write access to execute arbitrary code
on the server. These features may be configurable at run-time in future
releases of CVS server.
There is no temporary fix known other then disable public access to the
CVS server. You do not need to update the cvs package as long as you
need 'Update-prog' and 'Checkin-prog' feature and work in a trusted
environment.
Otherwise install the new packages from our FTP servers please.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages
are being offered to install from the maintenance web.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- libmcrypt
Several buffer overflows in libmcrypt were discovered by Ilia
Alshanetsky. The buffer overflows can lead to system compromise.
New packages are currently being build.
- gfxboot
Since SuSE 8.1 the bootloader lilo is replaced by grub.
Grub's password authentication can be bypassed.
New packages will be released soon.
- mod_php4
A buffer overflow in the wordwrap() function has been reported.
New packages will be prepared and should be available on our ftp
servers soon.
- wget
A buffer overflow in wget's url_filename function was found.
This buffer overflow can be triggered by long URLs.
New packages are currently being build and will be released
soon.
- IMP
The web front-end of IMP is vulnerable to a SQL injection attack.
New packages are currently being build and will be released
soon.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information
- Package authenticity verification:
SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over
the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important
to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be
sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing
the package. There are two verification methods that can be used
independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded
file or rpm package:
1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement.
2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package.
1) execute the command
md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm>
after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors.
Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the
announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is
cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de)
the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package.
We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the
announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt
and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all
md5 sums for the files are useless.
2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity
of an rpm package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the
filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.
=====================================================================
SuSE's security contact is <security(a)suse.com> or <security(a)suse.de>.
The <security(a)suse.de> public key is listed below.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The ISC (Internet Software Consortium) dhcp package is an imple-
mentation of the "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol" (DHCP).
An internal source code audit done by ISC revealed several buffer
overflows in the code which is responsible to handle dynamic DNS
requests.
These bugs allow an attacker to gain remote access to the dhcp
server if the dynamic DNS feature is enabled.
Dynamic DNS is not enabled by default on SuSE Linux.
As temporary fix you can disable dynamic DNS support and restart your
dhcp server. Otherwise install the new packages from our FTP servers.
Please backup your lease file before updating the package.
After the package update you have to restart the dhcp server
This can be done by executing the following commands as root:
- rcdhcpd restart
or (for older versions):
- rcdhcp restart
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages
are being offered to install from the maintenance web.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: susehelp
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2003:005
Date: Mon Jan 20 14:00:00 CET 2003
Affected products: SuSE Linux 8.1,
SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8,
SuSE Linux Office Server,
SuSE Linux Openexchange Server 4
Vulnerability Type: remote command execution
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: no
Cross References: -
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Remote command execution due
to broken filtering of shell metacharacters in CGI queries.
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds: mod_php4
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
During a code review of the susehelp package the SuSE Security Team
recognized that the security checks done by the susehelp CGI scripts are
insufficient.
Remote attackers can insert certain characters in CGI queries to the
susehelp system tricking it into executing arbitrary code as the "wwwrun"
user. Please note that this is only a vulnerability if you have a web server
running and configured to allow access to the susehelp system by remote
sites.
We nevertheless recommend an update of this package. As a temporary
workaround you may un-install the susehelp package by issuing the following
command as root:
rpm -e --nodeps susehelp
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages
are being offered to install from the maintenance web.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- mod_php4
A buffer overflow in the wordwrap() function has been reported.
New packages will be prepared and should be availble soon on our ftp
servers.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.

3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The library libpng provides several functions to encode, decode and
manipulate Portable Network Graphics (PNG) image files.
Due to wrong calculation of some loop offset values a buffer overflow
can occur. The buffer overflow can lead to Denial-of-Service or even
to remote compromise.
After updating libpng all applications that use libpng should be
restarted. Due to the fact that a lot of applications are linked
with libpng it may be necessary to switch to runlevel S and back
to the previous runlevel or even to reboot the system.
There is no temporary fix known. Please install the new packages from
our FTP servers.

- fam
SuSE Versions < 8.0 are shipping a vulnerable version of fam
which allows unprivileged users to determine filenames of
group root.
New fam packages are build and will be released right after
quality assurance permits.
- xpdf
An integer overflow in pdftops may lead to system compromise.
New packages are currently being build.
- libmcrypt
Several buffer overflows in libmcrypt were discovered by Ilia
Alshanetsky. The buffer overflows can lead to system compromise.
New packages are currently being build.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.

problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds: grub
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Stefan Esser from e-matters reported various bugs in MySQL. Within the
MySQL server the password checking and a signedness issue has been fixed.
These could lead to a remote compromise of the system running an unpatched
MySQL server. In order to exploit this bug, the remote attacker needs a
valid MySQL account.
Further, a buffer overflow in the mysqlclient library has been reported
and fixed. Applications using this library (as commonly used from within
PHP scripts) are vulnerable to this attack and could also be compromised
by remote attackers.
Since there is no workaround possible except shutting down the MySQL
server, we strongly recommend an update.
To be sure the update takes effect you have to restart the MySQL server
by executing the following command as root:
/etc/rc.d/mysql restart
If you run applications which utilize the mysqlclient library (i.e. software
that accesses a MySQL database server) make sure you restart them again to
force the use of the patched libraries.
We thank MySQL Product and Release Engineer Lenz Grimmer as well as
e-matters Stefan Esser who discovered the bugs for their committment to
security matters and the communication of them.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- grub
The grub boot manager allows users with physical access to the
terminal to circumvent the password protection from grub. Fixed
packages will soon be available.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.

1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
CUPS is a well known and widely used printing system for unix-like
systems. iDFENSE reported several security issues with CUPS that can
lead to local and remote root compromise. The following list
includes all vulnerabilities:
- integer overflow in HTTP interface to gain remote
access with CUPS privileges
- local file race condition to gain root (bug mentioned
above has to be exploited first)
- remotely add printers
- remote denial-of-service attack due to negative length in
memcpy() call
- integer overflow in image handling code to gain higher privileges
- gain local root due to buffer overflow of 'options' buffer
- design problem to gain local root (needs added printer, see above)
- wrong handling of zero width images can be abused to gain higher
privileges
- file descriptor leak and denial-of-service due to missing checks
of return values of file/socket operations
Since SuSE 8.1 CUPS is the default printing system.
As a temporary workaround CUPS can be disabled and an alternative
printing system like LPRng can be installed instead.
New CUPS packages are available on our FTP servers. Please, install
them to fix your system.

- none
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.

- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security announcements are sent to this list.

3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
fetchmail is used to download emails from POP-, IMAP-, ETRN- or ODMR-
servers.
Stefan Esser of e-matters reported a bug in fetchmail's mail address
expanding code which can lead to remote system compromise.
When fetchmail expands email addresses in mail headers it doesn not
allocated enough memory. An attacker can send a malicious formatted mail
header to exhaust the memory allocated by fetchmail to overwrite parts of
the heap. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary code.
There is no temporary fix known. Please install the new packages from
our FTP servers.

- none
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.
=====================================================================
SuSE's security contact is <security(a)suse.com> or <security(a)suse.de>.
The <security(a)suse.de> public key is listed below.
