SuSE Security Announcement
Package: uucp
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:38
Date: Wednesday, October 31th, 2001 15.06 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
Vulnerability Type: local privilege escalations (probably root)
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: all liunx-like systems using this version
of uucp
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: uucp
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
UUCP is a well known tool suite for copying data between unix-like
systems. Zen-Parse reported that the higher privileges of uux (UID
uucp) aren't dropped if long options instead of normal (short) options
are used. An attacker could exploit this hole, by specifying a malicious
configuration file to execute and/or access arbitrary data with the
privilege of user uucp.
As a temporary fix, you could either uninstall uucp from your system,
if not needed:
- rpm -e uucp
or remove the set[ug]id bit
- chmod ug-s /usr/bin/uux
Please, don't forget to add the permissions settings accordingly to
your /etc/permissions.local file.
Download the update package from locations described below and install
the package with the command `rpm -Uhv file.rpm'. The md5sum for each
file is in the line below. You can verify the integrity of the rpm
files using the command
`rpm --checksig --nogpg file.rpm',
independently from the md5 signatures below.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- openssh
After stabilizing the openssh package, updates for the distributions
6.4-7.2 are currently being prepared. The update packages fix a security
problem related to the recently discovered problems with source ip
based access restrictions in a user's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 file.
The packages will appear shortly on our ftp servers. Please note that
packages for the distributions 6.3 and up including 7.0 containing
cryptographic software are located on the German ftp server ftp.suse.de,
all other packages can be found on ftp.suse.com at the usual location.
We will issue a dedicated Security announcement for the openssh package.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) standard appendix:

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: squid
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:037
Date: Tuesday, Oct 30th 2001 12:30 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
Vulnerability Type: remote denial of service
Severity (1-10): 4
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: Systems running the squid proxy server
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: squid
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The squid proxy server can be crashed with a malformed request, resulting
in a denial of service attack. After the crash, the squid proxy must be
restarted. The weakness can only be triggered from an address that
is allowed to send requests, as configured in the squid configuration
file.
An upgrade to a fixed version of the squid package is the only reasonable
countermeasure against the bug. Please download the package for your
distribution, verify its integrity according to section 3) of this
SuSE Security announcement, then apply the update using the command
rpm -Uhv <package.rpm>
where <package.rpm> is the filename of the package that you downloaded.
NOTE:
SuSE Linux distributions come with two different squid packages: One
development package and one stable package. The respective package
for your installation can be found using the command
rpm -qa|grep squid
Please download and update only the package that is installed on your
system as determined by the version of the package installed.
Both packages for your distribution are listed below.
SPECIAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
The squid proxy has to be restarted in order for the fix to become
effective. Use the command
rcsquid restart
after successful installation of the upgrade to do this. Please note
that the start of the squid daemon can use several seconds so that
the daemon refuses to accept connections during that time.

3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information
- Package authenticity verification:
SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over
the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important
to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be
sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing
the package. There are two verification methods that can be used
independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded
file or rpm package:
1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement.
2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package.
1) execute the command
md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm>
after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors.
Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the
announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is
cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de)
the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package.
We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the
announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt
and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all
md5 sums for the files are useless.
2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity
of an rpm package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the
filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the toplevel directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: kernel
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:036
Date: Friday, Oct 26th 2001 18:00 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
Vulnerability Type: local privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 8
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: all Linux systems, all kernel versions
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: kernel
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) The Problem, Workaround, Recommended solution, Instructions, Notes,
Verification
The Problem:
The SuSE Linux kernel is a standard kernel, enhanced with a set of
additional drivers and other improvements, to suit the end-user's
demand for a great variety of drivers for all kind of hardware.
Two security related problems have been found in both the 2.2 and
2.4 series kernels:
1) A recursive symlink structure can cause the kernel to consume excessive
CPU time, causing the machine to halt for an arbitrary amount of time.
2) ptrace(2), the system call used to trace processes as done by the
strace(1) command, must not be given permissions to trace setuid or
setgid programs (processes with a different effective uid or gid than
the caller's uid/gid). A race condition in the ptrace() kernel code
was the reason for the kernel update in May 2001. The flaw fixed with
this kernel update is based on the assumption that the calling process
is allowed to trace a running process. The fix consists of disallowing
a ptrace() system call for all setuid/setgid binaries, regardless
of the capabilities of the calling process.
Bug 1) can lead to a local DoS.
Bug 2) can allow a local attacker to gain root privileges.
Workarounds:
It is possible to work around bug 2) by removing the setuid bit from the
programs newgrp, su, su1, sudo and possibly more programs in the system
that will start another program with different pivileges.
In order to completely solve the security problems, it is recommended to
update the kernel to a newer version as described below.
Recommended solution:
We have provided update kernels for our supported distributions
6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 and the freshly released 7.3. Currently,
only kernel update packages for the Intel i386 distributions are
available. The update should be performed with special care in order
to make sure that the system will properly boot after the package
update.
Step-By-Step Installation Instructions:
The kernel of a Linux system is the most critical component with respect
to stability, reliability and security. By consequence, an update of that
component requires some care and full attention to succeed.
The following paragraphs will guide you through the installation
process in a step-by-step fashion. The character sequence "****"
marks the beginning of a new paragraph. In some cases, you decide
if the paragraph is needed for you or not. Please read through all
of the steps down to the end. All of the commands that need to be
executed are required to be run as the superuser (root). Each step
relies on the steps before to complete successfully.
**** Step 1: Determine the needed kernel version
SuSE-6.3, 6.4 and 7.0 are built for kernels of version 2.2, 7.1 and
up are also ready for a 2.4 kernel. You should use the same major kernel
version for the update as you are using already.
Determine the kernel version that is running on your system with the
command
uname -r
If your running kernel is version 2.2.x, you should use a 2.2.19 kernel
to update, if you use a 2.4 series kernel, use a 2.4 kernel to update
SuSE-7.3 users: See Step 3!).
Cross-version updates _may_ work in your installation but are dis-
recommended in order to preserve a properly running system.
**** Step 2: Determine the needed kernel type
After you have determined which version to install, you must select the
type of kernel rpm package to install. There are four types offered:
k_i386 a kernel that runs on i386 processors.
k_smp the kernel for computers with more than one CPU
k_psmp for dual Pentium-I processor computers
k_deflt the default kernel for most systems, includes support
for APM (laptops).
You can use the command
rpm -qf `awk -F= '/image/{print $2}' < /etc/lilo.conf`
to find the name of the kernel RPM package that is installed on
your system. In the case of inconclusive results, pick one from the
four choices above: k_deflt works on most systems, k_smp is for
multi processor computers.
Step 1 and 2 will lead you to one of these possiblities:
2.2-default 2.2-smp 2.2-psmp 2.2-i386
2.4-default 2.4-smp 2.4-psmp 2.4-i386
**** Step 3: SuSE-7.3 special: Download
If you have a SuSE-7.3 system, continue to read this paragraph,
otherwise jump to Step 4.
SuSE Linux 7.3 comes with a kernel version 2.4.10. We have made
a set of patched kernels of this particular version to seamlessly
fit into a 7.3 installation. SuSE Linux releases before 7.3 should
receive a 2.4.7 kernel update - we provide both versions for the update.
It should be possible though to run both 2.4 kernels on all 2.4 based
systems.
Please download your kernel rpm from the location
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.3/kernel/2.4.10-20011026/
After downloading the rpm package, you might want to verify the
authenticity of the rpm package according to Section 3 of this and every
SuSE Security announcement.
Then go to Step 5, omitting Step 4.
**** Step 4: Download your kernel rpm
Your kernel rpm package is available for download from
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/<dist>/kernel/
where <dist> is the release version of your distribution.
If you need to download a 2.4 series kernel, enter the directory
called 2.4.7-20011026/ and download the kernel rpm type that you
have selected in Step 2.
If you need to download a 2.2 series kernel, enter the directory
called 2.2.19-20011026/ and download the kernel rpm type that you
have selected in Step 2.
An example: For a SuSE-7.2 distribution installed on an SMP system
that is running a 2.4 series kernel, you should download the file
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.2/kernel/2.4.7-20011026/k_smp-2.4…
After downloading the rpm package, you might want to verify the
authenticity of the rpm package according to Section 3 of this
SuSE Security announcement at the bottom of this message.
**** Step 5: SuSE-6.3 special: Installing your kernel rpm package
If you have a SuSE-6.3 system, continue to read this paragraph,
otherwise jump to Step 6.
In SuSE Linux version 6.3, the kernel and the kernel modules are
packaged in two different packages. This will change with the success
of this update: Both kernel images and kernel modules will be contained
in the same package. For the update to succeed, you will have to either
remove the existing kernel package from your system using the command
rpm -e `rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz`
or two kernel rpm packages will be installed on your system.
**** Step 6: Installing your kernel rpm package
Install the rpm package that you have downloaded in Steps 3 or 4 with
the command
rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force <K_FILE.RPM>
where <K_FILE.RPM> is the name of the rpm package that you downloaded.
Notice: After performing this step, your system will likely not be
able to boot if the following steps have not been fully applied.
**** Step 7: aic7xxx
If you use an Adaptec aic7xxx SCSI host adapter, continue to read
this paragraph, otherwise jump to Step 8.
The new kernel comes with two versions for the Adaptec aic7xxx driver.
If you have such a card, you should see the driver listed in the
output from the command
lsmod
or you should see the adapter in the output of the command
lspci
The new driver is known to work reliably. However, if you encounter
any problems with CDROM drives or other removeable devices (CD-RW
drives, tapes, etc) after this kernel upgrade, then you should try to
use the old driver which is called aic7xxx_old instead of aic7xxx.
If you decide to make this change, then the steps 10 and 11 are
mandatory for the update to succeed, regardless if you get back to
this paragraph after your first reboot or not.
To use the old driver, please use your favourite editor to edit
the file /etc/rc.config. Change aic7xxx into aic7xxx_old at the line
that starts with INITRD_MODULES. You should find it near the top of the
file. Do not forget to save your changes. Then go to Steps 10 and 11.
If you want to use the new driver, then do not change anything.
**** Step 8: LVM
If you use LVM, then continue to read this paragraph,
otherwise jump to Step 9.
If you use LVM (Logical Volume Manager) in your installation of SuSE
Linux before and including SuSE-7.1, then you need the updated lvm
package from the
/pub/suse/i386/update/<dist>/kernel/2.2.19-20011026/
directory for your distribution as well. The package contains the
userspace utilities to manage the Logical Volume Manager driver.
An update package is needed because the LVM data format/structure on
disk has changed with the new version of the LVM kernel driver.
Install the package as usual using the command
rpm -Uhv lvm-0.9.1_beta4-12.i386.rpm
Be sure you have downloaded the package for the explicit version
of your SuSE Linux Installation. The package names are identical
for all distribution versions.
With this kernel upgrade, the lvm driver is configured as a module,
it is _not_ compiled into the kernel image any more. Therefore, you
should use your favourite editor and edit /etc/rc.config. In this
file, the variable INITRD_MODULES must contain the word "lvm-mod".
Example: you have an NCR scsi hostadapter and use lvm and reiserfs.
The line in /etc/rc.config should look like
INITRD_MODULES="sym53c8xx lvm-mod"
Be careful about the double quotes!
WARNING: After the first boot with the new kernel you will not be able
to downgrade to older versions of LVM any more.
**** Step 9: reiserfs
If you use reiserfs, then continue to read this paragraph,
otherwise jump to Step 10.
If you use reiserfs (find out via "grep reiserfs /proc/mounts"), then
make sure that the variable INITRD_MODULES from /etc/rc.config contains
the word "reiserfs", like in the example in Step 8.
**** Step 10: configuring and creating the initrd
Upon kernel boot (after lilo runs), the kernel needs to use the
drivers for the device (disk/raid) where the root filesystem
is located in order to access it for mounting. If this driver is
not compiled into the kernel, it is supplied as a kernel module
that must be loaded _before_ the root filesystem is mounted. This
is done using a ramdisk that is loaded along with the kernel by lilo
(which is subject to the next Step).
The modules that will be packed into this initial ramdisk (initrd)
must be listed in the variable INITRD_MODULES in the file
/etc/rc.config . This ramdisk, called "initrd", must be generated
using the command
mk_initrd
If the driver for the device containing your root device is not
compiled directly into the kernel, then your system will most likely
not boot any more. If you have followed the above steps, you should be
safe. Special care should be taken with scsi hostadapters, logical volume
manager (lvm) and reiserfs.
**** Step 11: lilo
lilo is responsible for loading the kernel image and the initrd
ramdisk image into the system and for transferring control of the
system to the kernel. Therefore, a proper installation of the
bootloader (by calling the program lilo) is essential for the
system to boot (!).
Manually changed settings in /etc/lilo.conf require the admin to make
sure that /boot/vmlinuz is listed in the first "image" line in that
file. Verify that the line starting with initrd= is set to
initrd=/boot/initrd
Execute
lilo
and you should see your label(s) in an output like
Added linux *
Every other output should be considered an error and requires
attention. If your system managed to reboot before the upgrade, you
should not see any additional output from lilo at this stage.
**** Step 12: SuSE-7.0 special
If you have a SuSE Linux 7.0 distribution, then continue to read this
paragraph, otherwise jump to Step 13.
If you have performed the kernel upgrade as described in the last kernel
SuSE Security announcement SuSE-SA:2001:18 and if you have performed
the upgrade of the glibc as described in Step 8 of SuSE-SA:2001:18, then
you are done and you should go to Step 13. Otherwise, please read
SuSE-SA:2001:18 (from
http://www.suse.de/de/support/security/2001_018_kernel_txt.txt) and
return to the Step 13 in this announcement.
**** Step 13: reboot
If all of the steps above have been successfully applied to your
system, then the new kernel including the kernel modules and the
initrd should be ready to boot. The system needs to be rebooted for
the changes to become active. Please make sure that all steps are
complete, then reboot using the command
shutdown -r now
or
init 6

- squid
A squid server can be brought to a crash upon receipt of certain
requests. The attacker must have request access to the running squid
proxy to be able to take advantage of this weakness. The only effect
of an attack is the Denial of Service (DoS). After an attack, the
squid proxy must be restarted.
Update packages are available on our ftp server that eliminate the
problem. The security announcement for this issue will follow soon.
______________________________________________________________________________
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: htdig
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:035
Date: Wednesday, October 24th 2001 09:30 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
Vulnerability Type: local privilege escalation, remote DoS
Severity (1-10): 3
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: all linux-like operating-systems running
htdig's htsearch via CGI
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: htsearch
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
ht://Dig is a powerfull indexing and information gathering tool for the
web. ht://Dig's search engine htsearch could be run by a http server
as CGI program or standalone as commandline tool.
Due to insufficient checking of the running environment it is possible
to use commandline options via CGI. An remote attacker could use the -c
option to specify /dev/zero as an alternate config file to causes a
denial of service for some minutes.
To read files with the privilege of the http server by abusing the -c
option an attacker needs write access to the server running htsearch.
A temporary fix or workaround does not exist; we recommend to update
your system with the new RPM from our FTP server.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- Linux kernel
Security bugs have been found in both the 2.2 and 2.4 kernel series
of all currently supported SuSE Linux distributions (6.3-7.3), including
the freshly appeared SuSE-7.3. These bugs allow a local attacker to gain
root privileges, but there is no remote attack as of now.
As a temporary workaround, it is possible for experienced users of
linux-like systems to disable all setuid bits from all files in the
installed system using a find command with a -exec option.
We are currently in the process of testing the update kernels of both
2.2 (2.2.19) and 2.4 (2.4.13) series to make sure that these update
kernels will have the same level of stability and robustness as expected
from SuSE linux systems. The official kernel rpm packages will be
announced in a SuSE Security announcement during the second half of
this week. In the meanwhile, the directory
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/ contains the preliminary
update packages for testing (2.2.19 packages will be available shortly).
Please proceed with the update as described in
http://www.suse.de/de/support/security/2001_018_kernel_txt.txt
and report any problems that you may find to feedback(a)suse.de.
Please continue to watch the suse-security-announce mailing list for
new security announcements.

We advise against subscribing to lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: shadow/login
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:034
Date: Tuesday, Oct 23rd 2001 18:00 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
Vulnerability Type: local privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 2
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: most linux systems, common problem on
linux-like systems.
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: shadow/login
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
Multiple Linux vendors have issued security announcements about failures
of the /bin/login program to properly initialize the privileges of an
authenticated user if the PAM module pam_limits is enabled.
The bug has been categorized as a sequence bug, and is located in the
code of the login program itself: A call to getpwnam(3) returns a pointer
to a struct passwd, and the data is being used. Then, a call to PAM
routines cause getpwnam(3) to be called again, but beyond the programmer's
control or knowledge. The pointer as returned by the first getpwnam(3)
remains the same, but the data may be different. By consequence, the
data is in an undefined state. The error appears with the pam_limits
PAM module only because other PAM modules do not call getpwnam(3).
SuSE developers did not succeed in reproducing the error on SuSE Linux
installations since SuSE distributions do not come with the standard
login implementation from the util-linux collection. Instead, a version
maintained by Thorsten Kukuk <kukuk(a)suse.de> is used. This login
implementation may cause wrong group IDs to be set in very rare cases.
The harm of this bug is therefore considerably small on SuSE Linux.
However, we provide fixed rpm packages that remedy the problem. Since
the bug is not limited to the login program but to all programs that
authenticate users, more security announcements in this field are to
be expected. The Linux vendors cooperate to share the workload that
results from the audit of these programs.
To install the updates, please download the update package for your
distribution and use the command 'rpm -Uhv file.rpm' to apply the update.
Please run "SuSEconfig" after performing the package update to make sure
that the permissions of your files are configured as the security
settings of your installation define. Alternatively, if you have disabled
SuSEconfig, check for the permissions of the files /usr/bin/chage,
/usr/bin/chfn, /usr/bin/chsh, /usr/bin/expiry, /usr/bin/gpasswd and
/usr/bin/passwd to suit your needs. Setting these executeables to 4755
owned by root enables their functionality, removing the setuid bit
(chmod -s) disables it.

- htdig (ht://Dig)
htdig, a powerful indexing and information gathering tool for a webserver,
has been found vulnerable to a weakness where commandline options can
be passed on to the cgi program as a result of weak runtime environment
checking. The security announcement by Thomas Biege is waiting for the
update packages to reach the ftp-server (currently transferring).
Please continue to watch the suse-security-announce mailing list for
new security announcements.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: lprold
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:033
Date: Wed Oct 10 11:03:12 GMT 2001
Affected SuSE versions: [6.1, 6.2,] 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: bufferoverflow/local privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 6
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: Other Linux distributions, *BSD
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Several problems in lprold
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
ISS X-Force reported an overflow in BSD's lineprinter daemon shipped with
the lprold package in SuSE Linux. Due to missing bounds checks in the
lockfile processing function, internal buffers may overflow. Bounds checks
have been added to fix that problem.
Additionally the SuSE Security Team uncovered other security releated bugs
in lpd while analyzing lpd source after receiving the X-Force advisory.
These bugs allows users on machines listed in /etc/hosts.lpd or
/etc/hosts.equiv to chown any file on the system running lpd to any user.
In order to trigger any of the fixed bugs (including the overflow) the
attackers machine must be listed in one of these two access-files and the
attacker usually needs root on these machines due to the privileged-port
requirement.
Please download the packages and verify them as described in section 3.
After successful authentication you can update your packages with
the command `rpm -Uhv file.rpm'.
As root invoke the command "/etc/rc.d/lpd stop" to shutdown the old lpd
daemon and "/etc/rc.d/lpd start" afterwards to start the patched daemon.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- sftp/openssh:
Our last announcement SuSE-SA:2001:032 about WindowMaker claimed
that the openssh packages on SuSE distributions do not contain the
sftp-server as described by Peter W <peterw(a)usa.net> on the bugtraq
mailing list. This is wrong: The program is indeed included on all
recent openssh packages of SuSE Linux distributions, starting with
SuSE Linux 6.4 where the openssh package appeared first.
We will provide fixes for the distributions 6.4 through 7.2 as soon as
possible on our ftp server (ftp.suse.de for 6.4-7.0, ftp.suse.com for
7.1 and newer) and announce these fixes in the section 2) of an
upcoming security announcement.
Please note that this error has been corrected shortly before the
release of the upcoming SuSE Linux 7.3 which will arrive in the stores
by the end of this week.
We apologize for this error (Roman Drahtmueller, SuSE Security).
- squid
Malformed requests on the client side can cause the squid proxy server
to die, resulting in a denial of service attack that can be launched
from the internal network if squid is used at the edge of an internal
network to proxy requests to the internet.
We are in the process of testing the update packages that are
available on the ftp server shortly. SuSE Security will issue a
dedicated announcement for this issue shortly.
- devfs/kernel
SuSE Linux ships the userspace utilities for the use of the devfs
filesystem in the linux kernel, but neither the utilities nor the
filesystem interface for device files itself have been used in SuSE
Linux up to date. The decision to not actively use devfsd in the
distribution framework is based on security considerations.
For these reasons, SuSE products are not susceptible to the lately
found security problems in the devfs implementation.
______________________________________________________________________________
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: wmaker/WindowMaker
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:032
Date: Thursday, September 20th 2001 15:10 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: (6.0, 6.1, 6.2,) 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: remote privilege escalation
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: all Unix systems running
Window Maker < 0.65.1
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Window Maker
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The window manager Window Maker was found vulnerable to a buffer overflow
due to improper bounds checking when setting the window title.
An attacker can remotely exploit this buffer overflow by using malicious
web page titles or terminal escape sequences to set a excessively long
window title.
This attack can lead to remote command execution with the privileges of
the user running Window Maker.
A temporary fix does not exist; we recommend to update your system with
the new RPM from our FTP server.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
After installing the updated RPM
- run /sbin/SuSEconfig (the central configuration utility in SuSE Linux
distributions)
- restart your window manager. If this is not possible for configura-
tional reasons, restart your x-session.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- SuSE Linux distributions do not contain the sftp-server as described by
Peter W <peterw(a)usa.net> (Message-ID: <20010918082406.M14947(a)usa.net>)
on the bugtraq mailing list and are therefore not vulnerable to the
problems found.
- A new worm called "Nimda" has been reported in the wild. It attacks
IIS webservers and uploads a file called "readme.eml" which is being
downloaded by the client's browser. Some versions of the Internet
Explorer even execute this file without the user's knowledge. A
temporary workaround for sites that use a squid proxy to access the
internet would be to add these three lines to the /etc/squid.conf
file:
# filter Nimda worm files:
acl nimda urlpath_regex -i \.eml$
acl nimda urlpath_regex -i \.nws$
http_access deny nimda
Do not forget to reload your squid server (/usr/sbin/rcsquid reload)!
______________________________________________________________________________
We advise against subscribing to lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security annoucements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.

SuSE Security Announcement
Package: apache-contrib
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:31
Date: Monday, September 10th 2001 12:30 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: authentication bypass
Severity (1-10): 3
SuSE default package: no
Other affected systems: yes
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: mod_auth_mysql
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The Apache module mod_auth_mysql 1.4,which is shipped since SuSE Linux 7.1,
was found vulnerable to possible bypass authentication by MySQL command
injection.
An adversary could insert MySQL commands along with a password and these
commands will be interpreted by MySQL while mod_auth_mysql is doing the
password lookup in the database. A positive authentication could be returned.
Note, that this bug has not yet been proven exploitable so far.
A temporary fix does not exist; we recommend to update your system with the
new RPM from our FTP server.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
After installing the updated RPM run
- rcapache restart
- SuSEconfig

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
______________________________________________________________________________
We advise against subscribing to lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: screen
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:030
Date: Wednesday, September 5 2001 18:00 MEST
Affected SuSE versions: (6.0, 6.1, 6.2) 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: local root compromise
Severity (1-10): 5
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: some systems with the screen program
installed setuid root
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: screen
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
screen is a terminal multiplexer program that allows reattaching to
a detached session as well as multi-attached (shared) sessions.
The screen package allows a local attacker to obtain root privileges if
the /usr/bin/screen command is installed setuid root and if a directory
below /tmp/screens/ exists.
The screen program needs root permissions from the setuid-root bit for
two reasons: multi-attached sessions are only possible with root
privileges, and writing terminal allocation information to /var/run/utmp
(the who(1) and finger(1) commands). If the screen command is not running
with special privileges, all functionality except these two features will
continue to work, but the local root compromise will not be possible.
In order to provide the features mentioned, the screen package used to
be installed setuid-root in SuSE Linux distributions.
The update packages that we provide for the supported distributions 6.3,
6.4, 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 eliminate the error in the source code. In addition
to that, the rpm package does not contain the setuid-bit on the screen
program any more. If there is any more security-related bug in the screen
package or libraries that it is linked against to be found in the future,
these errors will not open local security holes any more. Users of the
screen package who need the multi-attach feature must enable it again by
adding the setuid-bit to the /usr/bin/screen file.
Please note that you should reflect the changes to permissions in the
files /etc/permissions*. If unsure, use the setting "secure local" for
the variable PERMISSION_SECURITY in /etc/rc.config and execute "SuSEconfig"
as root. Alternatively, change the settings for the screen program in
/etc/permissions* and run "chkstat -set <file>" for each file that you
need. Use the command "rpm -qlv screen | grep /usr/bin" to find out which
files to add to the permissions file (/usr/bin/screen is a symlink).
The authors of screen have released the new version screen-3.9.10 that
fixes the multi-attach-error, and some other uncritical bug. Our update
packages contain the necessary patches applied to the version as shipped
with the original distribution.
We thank Christian HĂĽrgemann <Bzrker(a)t-online.de> for reporting this
error on Monday, 3 Sep 2001.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Uhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- sendmail
SuSE Security announcement SuSE-SA:2001:028 (sendmail) offers a sendmail
update package for the 7.0-i386 distribution that has a lower version
number than the package in the tree for ftp installation on ftp.suse.com.
If your update rpm command fails with a complaint that the version
installed is newer than the one you wish to be installed, then please
use the "--oldpackage" commandline option to rpm:
"rpm --oldpackage -Uhv sendmail-*.rpm".
We are correcting the problem as soon as possible. The new package
will be named sendmail-8.11.0-10.i386.rpm and should appear on the ftp
server within the next 11 hours. The *-10 package is technically identical
to the *-5 package that is currently available on our ftp server.
______________________________________________________________________________
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.

Package: nkitb/nkitserv/telnetd
Announcement-ID: SuSE-SA:2001:029
Date: Mon Sep 3 12:55:58 MEST 2001
Affected SuSE versions: [6.1, 6.2,] 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
Vulnerability Type: remote code execution
Severity (1-10): 8
SuSE default package: yes
Other affected systems: All UN*X Systems shipping BSD derived telnetd
Content of this advisory:
1) security vulnerability resolved: Buffer overflow in in.telnetd
problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The telnet server which is shipped with SuSE distributions contains a
remotely exploitable buffer-overflow within its telnet option
negotiation code.
This bug is wide-spread on UN*X systems and affects almost
all implementations of telnet daemons available.
SuSE 7.2 distribution ships the telnet-server package which
contains the vulnerable telnet daemon. This package has been fixed.
The SuSE Linux distributions 6.3 and 6.4 contain versions and
implementations of the telnet-daemon that are vulnerable, but the
complexity of the code requires a full source code audit of the
software. In order not to further delay the release of the packages
for the SuSE Linux 7.x distributions, we recommend to disable the
telnet daemon on the 6.x distributions. This can be done by
commenting out the line in /etc/inetd.conf that starts with
"telnet", and then reloading the inetd configuration using the
command "killall -1 inetd". Another option is to not start the inetd
in the first place if you do not need any of the services provided
by the inetd daemon. Disabling inetd permanently involves killing
the running inetd process ("killall -TERM inetd") and setting the
variable START_INETD in /etc/rc.config to "no" (as opposed to
"yes").
Disabling the telnet service is the preliminary solution/workaround
against the problems with the telnetd daemon. We hope to be able to
provide a better solution.
The SuSE Linux distributions 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 have similar
implementations of in.telnetd, and for all of these distributions
there are update packages available. Please note that the package
that contains the /usr/sbin/in.telnetd program (the server
program) has changed over the different releases of the SuSE Linux
distribution. In the 7.0 and 7.1 distributions the package is called
"nkitserv". The 7.2 distribution lists the telnet server in the
package "telnet-server".
Please download the packages and verify them as described in section 3.
After successfull authentication you can update your packages with
the command `rpm -Uhv file.rpm'.
Further action should not be necessary to activate the update since
the in.telnetd daemon is started from a new by inetd upon every
accepted connection from the network.
Regardless of the availiability of fixed packages of the
telnet-daemon, SuSE Security strongly recommend to disable the
telnet service if you do not use it. In addition to that, only
cryptographically protected protocols such as secure shell (ssh,
package openssh) can be an efficient countermeasure against sniffing
and spoofing type attacks. Due to significantly more comfort (such
as X11-forwarding, multiple authentication methods, ...), the
transition to ssh should be worth the effort in any case.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SuSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- w3m
The w3m browser contains a buffer-overflow which allows remote-attackers
to execute arbitrary code or to crash the w3m web-client when viewing
special crafted sites. Please update to the newest w3m packages available
on the ftp-server.
- dip
The dip program is executable as setuid root program for users in the
"dialout" group, a privilege that has been issued by the administrator for
a trusted user group. This bug will be corrected in future releases of the
SuSE Linux distribution.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm
package file.
- SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SuSE security discussion.
All SuSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SuSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SuSE's security annoucements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
