______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
A single critical security issues was fixed in the SUSE Linux
Enterprise 9 and 10 kernels, which allowed local users to gain root
privileges.
The issue is tracked by CVE-2009-2698 and is a missing check in the
MSG_PROBE socket handling of IPv4 and IPv6 sockets.
This bug was fixed in the 2.6.18 upstream kernel but was not deemed
security relevant at that time. This means that SUSE Linux Enterprise
11 products and openSUSE products are not affected.
We wish to thank Tavis Ormandy, who pointed out that this problem is
yet another NULL page code execution problem.
No other bugs were fixed in this update.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
Our maintenance customers are notified individually. The packages are
offered for installation from the maintenance web:

6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file where you saved the
announcement. The output for a valid signature looks like:
gpg: Signature made <DATE> using RSA key ID 3D25D3D9
gpg: Good signature from "SuSE Security Team <security(a)suse.de>"
where <DATE> is replaced by the date the document was signed.
If the security team's key is not contained in your key ring, you can
import it from the first installation CD. To import the key, use the
command
gpg --import gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04.asc
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and the integrity of
a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered
with.
The internal rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the
authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the
filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it
contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on
RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during
installation. You can also find it on the first installation CD and at
the end of this announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround against all of the listed issues,
please install the updated packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after installing the update.
Note that the SLES9 update was not released yet at the time this
advisory was sent. Packages are expected to be made available
tomorrow (Friday).

5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
- see SUSE Security Summary report

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
Subversion is a revision control system, which is mainly used for
code development.
The ibsvn_delta library is vulnerable to integer overflows while
processing svndiff streams, this leads to overflows on the heap
because of insufficient memory allocation.
This bug can be exploited by clients with commit access to
cause a remote denial-of-service or arbitrary code execution.
It can also be exploited in the other direction from a server
to a client that tries to do a checkout or update.
2) Solution or Work-Around
Please update.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart a standalone server.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
- fetchmail
This update of fetchmail improves SSL certificate validation to stop
possible man-in-the-middle attacks by inserting \0-character in the
certificate's subject name. (CVE-2009-2666)
- wget
This update wget improves the handling of the 0-character in the
subject name of a SSL certificate.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Solved Security Vulnerabilities
To avoid flooding mailing lists with SUSE Security Announcements for minor
issues, SUSE Security releases weekly summary reports for the low profile
vulnerability fixes. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list or
download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for
more severe vulnerabilities.
Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP
server and via the YaST Online Update.
- memcached
This update of memcached fixes a signedness problem which may lead to
a buffer too small to hold all data received from the network, this may
allow arbitrary remote code execution. (CVE-2009-2415)
Additionally an information leak was fixed (CVE-2009-1494,CVE-2009-1255)
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE11
- libtiff/libtiff3
This update of libtiff fixes a buffer underflow in LZWDecodeCompat
(CVE-2009-2285).
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLES9, SLE10, SLE11, NLD9, OES
- nagios
A shell injection bug in nagios' statuswml.cgi CGI script has been fixed.
CVE-2009-2288 has been assigned to this issue.
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE10, SLE11
- libsndfile
This update of libsndfile fixes a heap-based buffer overflow in function
voc_read_header() (CVE-2009-1788) and another heap-based buffer overflow
in aiff_read_header() (CVE-2009-1791).
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE11
- gaim/fitch
Several bugfixes were done for the Instant Messenger Pidgin:
- Malformed responses to file transfers could cause a buffer overflow in
pidgin (CVE-2009-1373) and specially crafted packets could crash it
(CVE-2009-1375).
- The fix against integer overflows in the msn protocol handling was
incomplete (CVE-2009-1376).
- Fixed misparsing ICQ message as SMS DoS (CVE-2009-1889, Pidgin#9483).
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLES9, SLE10, SLE11, NLD9
- open-, strong-, freeswan
Two vulnerabilities in the openswan ASN.1 parser (when handling RDNs,
UTCTIME and GENERALIZEDTIME strings) could lead to remote crashes of
the pluto daemon (CVE-2009-2185).
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLES9, SLE10, SLE11, NLD9
- libapr-util1
This update of libapr-util1 fixes a memory consumption bug in the XML
parser that can cause a remote denial-of-service vulnerability in app-
lications using APR (WebDAV for example) (CVE-2009-1955). Additionally
a one byte buffer overflow in function apr_brigade_vprintf()
(CVE-2009-1956) and buffer underflow in function apr_strmatch_precompile()
(CVE-2009-0023) was fixed too. Depending on the application using this
function it can lead to remote denial of service or information leakage.
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE10, SLE11
- websphere-as_ce
This update of WebSphere fixes the following vulnerabilities:
- GERONIMO-3838: close potential denial of service attack
- CVE-2008-5518: fix Apache Geronimo web administration console
directory traversal vulnerabilities.
- CVE-2009-0038: fix Apache Geronimo web administration console
XSS vulnerabilities.
- CVE-2009-0039: fix Apache Geronimo web administration console
XSRF vulnerabilities.
- CVE-2009-0781: Samples: Fix Apache Tomcat cross-site scripting
vulnerability.
Affected products: SLE10, SLE11
- libxml2
This update of libxml2 does not use pointers after they were freed
anymore. (CVE-2009-2416)
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLES9, SLE10, SLE11, NLD9
______________________________________________________________________________
2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds
none
______________________________________________________________________________
3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based
distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can
also find it on the first installation CD and included at the end of this
announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

SUSE's security contact is <security(a)suse.com> or <security(a)suse.de>.

by Marcus Meissner 11 Aug '09
by Marcus Meissner 11 Aug '09
11 Aug '09
Dear opensuse-security-announce subscribers and openSUSE users,
SUSE Security announces that openSUSE 10.3 will be discontinued soon.
Having provided security-relevant fixes for two years, we will stop
releasing updates after October 31st 2009.
As a consequence, the openSUSE 10.3 distribution directory on our
server download.opensuse.org will be removed from /distribution/10.3/
to free space on our mirror sites. The 10.3 directory in the update tree
/update/10.3 will follow, as soon as all updates have been published.
The discontinuation of openSUSE 10.3 enables us to focus on the openSUSE
distributions of a newer release dates to ensure that our users can
continuously take advantage of the quality that they are used to with
openSUSE products.
This announcement holds true for openSUSE 10.3 only. As usual, Novell/SUSE
will continue to provide update packages for the following products:
openSUSE 11.0 (supported until June 30th 2010)
openSUSE 11.1 (supported until December 31st 2010)
openSUSE 11.2 (currently in development, to be released November 12th 2009)
for the next two openSUSE releases plus two months overlap period.

1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The Sun Java JRE /JDK 5 was updated to Update 20 fixing various
security issues.
CVE-2009-2670: The audio system in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK and JRE 5.0 before Update
20, does not prevent access to java.lang.System properties by (1)
untrusted applets and (2) Java Web Start applications, which allows
context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading
these properties.
CVE-2009-2671: The SOCKS proxy implementation in Sun Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK and
JRE 5.0 before Update 20, allows remote attackers to discover the
user name of the account that invoked an untrusted (1) applet or (2)
Java Web Start application via unspecified vectors.
CVE-2009-2672: The proxy mechanism implementation in Sun Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK and
JRE 5.0 before Update 20, does not prevent access to browser cookies
by untrusted (1) applets and (2) Java Web Start applications, which
allows remote attackers to hijack web sessions via unspecified vectors.
CVE-2009-2673: The proxy mechanism implementation in Sun Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK and JRE
5.0 before Update 20, allows remote attackers to bypass intended access
restrictions and connect to arbitrary sites via unspecified vectors,
related to a declaration that lacks the final keyword.
CVE-2009-2674: Integer overflow in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15 allows context-dependent attackers
to gain privileges via vectors involving an untrusted Java Web Start
application that grants permissions to itself, related to parsing of
JPEG images.
CVE-2009-2675: Integer overflow in the unpack200 utility in Sun Java
Runtime Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK
and JRE 5.0 before Update 20, allows context-dependent attackers to
gain privileges via vectors involving an untrusted (1) applet or
(2) Java Web Start application that grants permissions to itself,
related to decompression.
CVE-2009-2676: Unspecified vulnerability in JNLPAppletlauncher in Sun
Java SE, and SE for Business, in JDK and JRE 6 Update 14 and earlier
+and JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 19 and earlier; and Java SE for Business in
SDK and JRE 1.4.2_21 and earlier; allows remote attackers to create or
modify arbitrary files via vectors involving an untrusted Java applet.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of Sun Java and browsers running java plugins after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The Mozilla Firefox Browser in SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 Service Pack 2
was brought from the old 2.0.0.x release branch to the current 3.0.12
release of the Firefox 3.0 release branch.
It contains the following new security fixes:
MFSA 2009-34 / CVE-2009-2462 / CVE-2009-2463 / CVE-2009-2464 /
CVE-2009-2465 / CVE-2009-2466:
Mozilla developers and community members identified and fixed
several stability bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and
other Mozilla-based products. Some of these crashes showed evidence
of memory corruption under certain circumstances and we presume that
with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run
arbitrary code.
MFSA 2009-35 / CVE-2009-2467:
Security researcher Attila Suszter reported that when a page contains
a Flash object which presents a slow script dialog, and the page is
navigated while the dialog is still visible to the user, the Flash
plugin is unloaded resulting in a crash due to a call to the deleted
object. This crash could potentially be used by an attacker to run
arbitrary code on a victim's computer.
MFSA 2009-36 / CVE-2009-1194:
oCERT security researcher Will Drewry reported a series of heap
and integer overflow vulnerabilities which independently affected
multiple font glyph rendering libraries. On Linux platforms libpango
was susceptible to the vulnerabilities while on OS X CoreGraphics was
similarly vulnerable. An attacker could trigger these overflows by
constructing a very large text run for the browser to display. Such an
overflow can result in a crash which the attacker could potentially
use to run arbitrary code on a victim's computer. The open-source
nature of Linux meant that Mozilla was able to work with the libpango
maintainers to implement the correct fix in version 1.24 of that
system library which was distributed with OS security updates. On
Mac OS X Firefox works around the CoreGraphics flaw by limiting the
length of text runs passed to the system.
MFSA 2009-37 / CVE-2009-2469:
Security researcher PenPal reported a crash involving a SVG element on
which a watch function and __defineSetter__ function have been set for
a particular property. The crash showed evidence of memory corruption
and could potentially be used by an attacker to run arbitrary code
MFSA 2009-39 / CVE-2009-2471:
Mozilla developer Blake Kaplan reported that setTimeout, when called
with certain object parameters which should be protected with a
XPCNativeWrapper, will fail to keep the object wrapped when compiling
the new function to be executed. If chrome privileged code were
to call setTimeout using this as an argument, the this object will
lose its wrapper and could be unsafely accessed by chrome code. An
attacker could use such vulnerable code to run arbitrary JavaScript
with chrome privileges.
MFSA 2009-40 / CVE-2009-2472:
Mozilla security researcher moz_bug_r_a4 reported a series
of vulnerabilities in which objects that normally receive a
XPCCrossOriginWrapper are constructed without the wrapper. This
can lead to cases where JavaScript from one website may unsafely
access properties of such an object which had been set by a different
website. A malicious website could use this vulnerability to launch
a XSS attack and run arbitrary JavaScript within the context of
another site.
The update also contains a set of GTK2+ and dependend libraries
necessary for this version upgrade.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart all running Firefox instances after the update.
This update is not yet available on S/390 64bit, this will be delivered
with the upcoming 3.0.13 update.
Due to a unclear SUN Java bug Firefox will not start on the first try,
but only on the second.
This update also requires a fixed yast2-registration, otherwise further
registration tasks will not open a webbrowser. It is available with
this update.

1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
Note: This advisory was resent because the list of packages was
wrong.
The flash-player is a web-browser plugin that allows displaying
animated web-content and remote access to client hardware (mic,
web-cam, etc.).
A specially crafted Shockwave-Flash (SWF) file could cause a
buffer overflow in the flash-player plugin. This buffer overflow
can probably be exploited to execute arbitrary code remotely.
2) Solution or Work-Around
No work-around, please update.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart your web-browser after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
