______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
Specially crafted zone update packets could trigger an exception in
bind causing it to exit. The attack works if BIND is master for a
zone even if zone updates are not configured (CVE-2009-0696).
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of bind after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file where you saved the
announcement. The output for a valid signature looks like:
gpg: Signature made <DATE> using RSA key ID 3D25D3D9
gpg: Good signature from "SuSE Security Team <security(a)suse.de>"
where <DATE> is replaced by the date the document was signed.
If the security team's key is not contained in your key ring, you can
import it from the first installation CD. To import the key, use the
command
gpg --import gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04.asc
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and the integrity of
a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered
with.
The internal rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the
authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the
filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it
contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on
RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during
installation. You can also find it on the first installation CD and at
the end of this announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The MozillaFirefox 3.0.12 release fixes various bugs and some critical
security issues.
MFSA 2009-34 / CVE-2009-2462 / CVE-2009-2463 / CVE-2009-2464 /
CVE-2009-2465 / CVE-2009-2466:
Mozilla developers and community members identified and fixed
several stability bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and
other Mozilla-based products. Some of these crashes showed evidence
of memory corruption under certain circumstances and we presume that
with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run
arbitrary code.
MFSA 2009-35 / CVE-2009-2467:
Security researcher Attila Suszter reported that when a page contains
a Flash object which presents a slow script dialog, and the page is
navigated while the dialog is still visible to the user, the Flash
plugin is unloaded resulting in a crash due to a call to the deleted
object. This crash could potentially be used by an attacker to run
arbitrary code on a victim's computer.
MFSA 2009-36 / CVE-2009-1194:
oCERT security researcher Will Drewry reported a series of heap
and integer overflow vulnerabilities which independently affected
multiple font glyph rendering libraries. On Linux platforms libpango
was susceptible to the vulnerabilities while on OS X CoreGraphics was
similarly vulnerable. An attacker could trigger these overflows by
constructing a very large text run for the browser to display. Such an
overflow can result in a crash which the attacker could potentially
use to run arbitrary code on a victim's computer. The open-source
nature of Linux meant that Mozilla was able to work with the libpango
maintainers to implement the correct fix in version 1.24 of that
system library which was distributed with OS security updates. On
Mac OS X Firefox works around the CoreGraphics flaw by limiting the
length of text runs passed to the system.
MFSA 2009-37 / CVE-2009-2469:
Security researcher PenPal reported a crash involving a SVG element on
which a watch function and __defineSetter__ function have been set for
a particular property. The crash showed evidence of memory corruption
and could potentially be used by an attacker to run arbitrary code
on a victim's computer.
MFSA 2009-39 / CVE-2009-2471:
Mozilla developer Blake Kaplan reported that setTimeout, when called
with certain object parameters which should be protected with a
XPCNativeWrapper, will fail to keep the object wrapped when compiling
the new function to be executed. If chrome privileged code were
to call setTimeout using this as an argument, the this object will
lose its wrapper and could be unsafely accessed by chrome code. An
attacker could use such vulnerable code to run arbitrary JavaScript
with chrome privileges.
MFSA 2009-40 / CVE-2009-2472:
Mozilla security researcher moz_bug_r_a4 reported a series
of vulnerabilities in which objects that normally receive a
XPCCrossOriginWrapper are constructed without the wrapper. This
can lead to cases where JavaScript from one website may unsafely
access properties of such an object which had been set by a different
website. A malicious website could use this vulnerability to launch
a XSS attack and run arbitrary JavaScript within the context of
another site.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of Firefox after the update.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 and openSUSE 11.1 kernel was updated to
fix various bugs and several security issues. It was also updated to
the stable release 2.6.27.25.
Following security issues were fixed: CVE-2009-1961: A local denial
of service problem in the splice(2) system call was fixed.
CVE-2009-1389: A crash on r8169 network cards when receiving large
packets was fixed.
CVE-2009-1385: Integer underflow in the e1000_clean_rx_irq function
in drivers/net/e1000/e1000_main.c in the e1000 driver in the Linux
kernel, the e1000e driver in the Linux kernel, and Intel Wired Ethernet
(aka e1000) before 7.5.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial
of service (panic) via a crafted frame size.
CVE-2009-1630: The nfs_permission function in fs/nfs/dir.c in the
NFS client implementation in the Linux kernel, when atomic_open is
available, does not check execute (aka EXEC or MAY_EXEC) permission
bits, which allows local users to bypass permissions and execute files,
as demonstrated by files on an NFSv4 file server
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after installing the update.

The DHCP client (dhclient) could be crashed by a malicious DHCP
server sending an overlong subnet field (CVE-2009-0692).
In theory a malicious DHCP server could exploit the flaw to execute
arbitrary code as root on machines using dhclient to obtain network
settings. Newer distributions (SLES10+, openSUSE) do have buffer
overflow checking that guards against this kind of stack overflow
though. So actual exploitability is rather unlikely.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart all running instances of dhclient after the update or
reboot the machine.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
- ruby
- insufficient return value checks for openssl function
OCSP_basic_verify() (CVE-2009-0642) allowed attackers to use
revoked certificates.
- the entropy of DNS identifiers was increased to avoid spoofing
attacks (CVE-2008-3905).
- The code for parsing XML data was vulnerable to a denial of
service bug (CVE-2008-3790).
- An attack on algorithm complexity was possible in function
WEBrick::HTTP::DefaultFileHandler() while parsing HTTP requests
(CVE-2008-3656) as well as by using the regex engine
(CVE-2008-3443) causing high CPU load.
- Ruby's access restriction code (CVE-2008-3655) as well as
safe-level handling using function DL.dlopen() (CVE-2008-3657) and
big decimal handling (CVE-2009-1904) was improved.
Affected Products: SLES9, SLES10, SLES11, openSUSE 10.3-11.1
- samba
- smbclient was prone to a format string vulnerability (CVE-2009-1886)
- file ACLs could potentially be bypassed when DOS filemode was
enabled (CVE-2009-1888).
Affected Products: SLES10, SLES11, openSUSE 10.3-11.1
- libpng
libpng did not properly parse 1-bit interlaced images. Attackers
could potentially use this to read portions of memory (CVE-2009-2042).
Affected Products: SLES9, SLES10, SLES11, openSUSE 10.3-11.1

To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

and in out-of-sequence message handling (CVE-2009-1387) have been fixed.
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE9-11
- net-snmp
With this update of net-snmp the handling of TCP wrappers rules for
client authorization was improved, prior to this update it was possible
for remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and execute
SNMP queries. (CVE-2008-6123)
Additionally binding to multiple interfaces was improved.
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE9-11
- ImageMagick/GraphicsMagick
This update of ImageMagick fixes an integer overflow in the XMakeImage()
function that allowed remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service and
possibly the execution of arbitrary code via a crafted TIFF file.
(CVE-2009-1882)
Affected products: openSUSE 10.3-11.1, SLE9-11
- perl/perl-Compress-Raw-Zlib

3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based
distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can
also find it on the first installation CD and included at the end of this
announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
=====================================================================
SUSE's security contact is <security(a)suse.com> or <security(a)suse.de>.
The <security(a)suse.de> public key is listed below.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
IBM Java 6 SR 5 was released fixing various bugs and critical security
issues:
CVE-2009-1093: A vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
with initializing LDAP connections may be exploited by a remote client
to cause a denial-of-service condition on the LDAP service.
CVE-2009-1094: A vulnerability in Java Runtime Environment LDAP
client implementation may allow malicious data from an LDAP server
to cause malicious code to be unexpectedly loaded and executed on an
LDAP client.
CVE-2009-1095
CVE-2009-1096: Buffer overflow vulnerabilities in the Java
Runtime Environment (JRE) with unpacking applets and Java Web Start
applications using the unpack200 JAR unpacking utility may allow an
untrusted applet or application to escalate privileges. For example,
an untrusted applet may grant itself permissions to read and write
local files or execute local applications that are accessible to the
user running the untrusted applet.
CVE-2009-1097: A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Java Runtime
Environment with processing PNG images may allow an untrusted Java Web
Start application to escalate privileges. For example, an untrusted
application may grant itself permissions to read and write local
files or execute local applications that are accessible to the user
running the untrusted application.
CVE-2009-1097: A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Java Runtime
Environment with processing GIF images may allow an untrusted Java Web
Start application to escalate privileges. For example, an untrusted
application may grant itself permissions to read and write local
files or execute local applications that are accessible to the user
running the untrusted application.
CVE-2009-1098: A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Java Runtime
Environment with processing GIF images may allow an untrusted applet
or Java Web Start application to escalate privileges. For example,
an untrusted applet may grant itself permissions to read and write
local files or execute local applications that are accessible to the
user running the untrusted applet.
CVE-2009-1099: A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Java Runtime
Environment with processing fonts may allow an untrusted applet
or Java Web Start application to escalate privileges. For example,
an untrusted applet may grant itself permissions to read and write
local files or execute local applications that are accessible to the
user running the untrusted applet.
CVE-2009-1100: A vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
with storing temporary font files may allow an untrusted applet
or application to consume a disproportionate amount of disk space
resulting in a denial-of-service condition.
CVE-2009-1100: A vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
with processing temporary font files may allow an untrusted applet or
application to retain temporary files resulting in a denial-of-service
condition.
CVE-2009-1101: A vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
HTTP server implementation may allow a remote client to create a
denial-of-service condition on a JAX-WS service endpoint that runs
on the JRE.
CVE-2009-1103: A vulnerability in the Java Plug-in with deserializing
applets may allow an untrusted applet to escalate privileges. For
example, an untrusted applet may grant itself permissions to read and
write local files or execute local applications that are accessible
to the user running the untrusted applet.
CVE-2009-1104: The Java Plug-in allows Javascript code that is loaded
from the localhost to connect to any port on the system. This may
be leveraged together with XSS vulnerabilities in a blended attack
to access other applications listening on ports other than the one
where the Javascript code was served from.
CVE-2009-1105: The Java Plug-in allows a trusted applet to be launched
on an earlier version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) provided
the user that downloaded the applet allows it to run on the requested
release. A vulnerability allows Javascript code that is present in
the same web page as the applet to exploit known vulnerabilities of
the requested JRE.
CVE-2009-1106: A vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment with
parsing crossdomain.xml files may allow an untrusted applet to connect
to any site that provides a crossdomain.xml file instead of sites
that allow the domain that the applet is running on.
CVE-2009-1107: The Java Plugin displays a warning dialog for signed
applets. A signed applet can obscure the contents of the dialog and
trick a user into trusting the applet.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of IBM Java after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
Our maintenance customers are notified individually. The packages are
offered for installation from the maintenance web:

See SUSE Security Summary Report.
______________________________________________________________________________
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered
