1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The Linux kernel update was updated on openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3 to fix
the following security problems:
CVE-2008-2136: A problem in SIT IPv6 tunnel handling could be used
by remote attackers to immediately crash the machine.
CVE-2007-6282: A remote attacker could crash the IPSec/IPv6 stack
by sending a bad ESP packet. This requires the host to be able to
receive such packets (default filtered by the firewall).
CVE-2007-5904: A remote buffer overflow in CIFS was fixed which
could potentially be used by remote attackers to crash the machine
or potentially execute code.
CVE-2008-1615: On x86_64 a denial of service attack could be used by
local attackers to immediately panic / crash the machine.
CVE-2008-2358: A security problem in DCCP was fixed, which could be
used by remote attackers to crash the machine. Only a fix for openSUSE
10.2 was necessary.
CVE-2008-2148: The permission checking in sys_utimensat was incorrect
and local attackers could change the file times of files they do not
own to the current time.
CVE-2007-6206: An information leakage during core dumping of root
processes was fixed. This problem was already fixed for openSUSE 10.3
previously and was now fixed for openSUSE 10.2.
CVE-2007-6712: A integer overflow in the hrtimer_forward function
(hrtimer.c) in Linux kernel, when running on 64-bit systems, allows
local users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a timer
with a large expiry value, which causes the timer to always be expired.
CVE-2008-1669: Fixed a SMP ordering problem in fcntl_setlk could
potentially allow local attackers to execute code by timing file
locking.
CVE-2008-1367: Clear the "direction" flag before calling signal
handlers. For specific not yet identified programs under specific
timing conditions this could potentially have caused memory corruption
or code execution.
CVE-2008-1375: Fixed a dnotify race condition, which could be used
by local attackers to potentially execute code.
CVE-2007-5500: A ptrace bug could be used by local attackers to hang
their own processes indefinitely.
Also various non security bugs were fixed, please see the RPM changelogs.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart the machine after installing the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

See SUSE Security Summary Report.

6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file where you saved the
announcement. The output for a valid signature looks like:
gpg: Signature made <DATE> using RSA key ID 3D25D3D9
gpg: Good signature from "SuSE Security Team <security(a)suse.de>"
where <DATE> is replaced by the date the document was signed.
If the security team's key is not contained in your key ring, you can
import it from the first installation CD. To import the key, use the
command
gpg --import gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04.asc
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and the integrity of
a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered
with.
The internal rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the
authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the
filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it
contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on
RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during
installation. You can also find it on the first installation CD and at
the end of this announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The Opera web browser was brought to security update level 9.50
Following security problems were fixed:
CVE-2008-2714: Opera before 9.26 allows remote attackers to
misrepresent web page addresses using "certain characters" that
"cause the page address text to be misplaced."
CVE-2008-2715: Unspecified vulnerability in Opera before 9.5 allows
remote attackers to read cross-domain images via HTML CANVAS elements
that use the images as patterns.
CVE-2008-2716: Unspecified vulnerability in Opera before 9.5 allows
remote attackers to spoof the contents of trusted frames on the same
parent page by modifying the location, which can facilitate phishing
attacks.
Opera 9.50 also contains lots of new features and other bugfixes,
see the Changelog at:
http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/linux/950/
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of Opera after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Solved Security Vulnerabilities
To avoid flooding mailing lists with SUSE Security Announcements for minor
issues, SUSE Security releases weekly summary reports for the low profile
vulnerability fixes. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list or
download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for
more severe vulnerabilities.
Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP
server and via the YaST Online Update.
- MozillaThunderbird 2.0.0.14
MozillaThunderbird was updated to version 2.0.0.14, fixing various
bugs including 1 security bug:
+ MFSA 2008-20/CVE-2008-1380: Crash in JavaScript garbage collector
Javascript is not default enabled in our Mozilla Thunderbird builds though.
Thunderbird was released for SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3.
- mozilla-xulrunner181 security release
The Mozilla render engine mozilla-xulrunner181 was updated to
version 1.8.1.14, fixing various bugs including 1 security bug:
+ MFSA 2008-20/CVE-2008-1380: Crash in JavaScript garbage collector
It was released for openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3.
- tkimg GIF problems
Two vulnerabilities while parsing GIF images were fixed in
tkimg. (CVE-2008-0553, CVE-2006-4484)
tkimg was updated for openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3.
- cups png and pdf problems
Two minor security problems were fixed in the print server CUPS:
- specially crafted PNG files could cause an integer overflow in the
png filter (CVE-2008-1693).
- specially crafted pdf files with embedded fonts could crash
pdftops (CVE-2008-1693).
Updates were released for all products.
- qemu raw disk format emulation escape
Local attackers in a QEMU guest session could use raw formatted
disk images to access the hosting environment. (CVE-2008-2004)
Updates were released for SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3.
- gstreamer010-plugins-good speex problem
gstreamer-plugins-good was also affected by the speex problem, where
specially crafted files or streams could potentially be abused to
trick applications that support speex into executing arbitrary code
(CVE-2008-1686).
gstreamer010-plugins-good was updated on all distributions containing
this package.
- pan nzb file denial of service
In the PAN newsreader specially crafted nzb files could trigger a
heap based buffer overflow that could potentially be exploited to
execute arbitrary code (CVE-2008-2363).
pan was only affected on openSUSE 10.3 and was updated there.
- libxslt match processing overflow
A libxslt XSL-match processing head overflow has been fixed, which
could be used to potentially execute code if an attacker would be
able to inject XSL matches. (CVE-2008-1767)
All SUSE Linux products received updated packages.
______________________________________________________________________________
2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds
None listed this week.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based
distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can
also find it on the first installation CD and included at the end of this
announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
Multiple buffer overflows have been fixed in Evolution.
CVE-2008-1108: A buffer overflow in Evolution, when the ITip
Formatter plugin is disabled, allows remote attackers potentially
to execute arbitrary code via a long timezone string in an iCalendar
attachment.
CVE-2008-1109: A heap-based buffer overflow in Evolution allows
user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long
DESCRIPTION property in an iCalendar attachment, which is not properly
handled during a reply in the calendar view (aka the Calendars window).
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of evolution after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

SUSE's security contact is <security(a)suse.com> or <security(a)suse.de>.
The <security(a)suse.de> public key is listed below.

1) Solved Security Vulnerabilities
To avoid flooding mailing lists with SUSE Security Announcements for minor
issues, SUSE Security releases weekly summary reports for the low profile
vulnerability fixes. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list or
download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for
more severe vulnerabilities.
Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP
server and via the YaST Online Update.
- xine NSF buffer overflow
Specially crafted NSF files could potentially be exploited to
execute arbitrary code (CVE-2008-1878).
Specially crafted files or streams could potentially be abused to
trick applications that support speex into executing arbitrary code
(CVE-2008-1686).
Updated packages have been released for all SUSE distributions
containing XINE.
- xemacs and emacs fast-lock file problems
Emacs and Xemacs automatically loaded fast-lock files which allowed
local attackers to execute arbitrary code as the user editing the
associated files (CVE-2008-2142).
Xemacs and Emacs have been updated on all SUSE distributions.
- opensuse-updater tmp problems and off-by-one problems
The opensuse-updater on openSUSE 10.2 was updated to fix a symlink
problem and two off-by-one vulnerabilities.
The overflows can be considered no security problem and are tracked
by CVE-2008-2388.
The symlink flaw could be used by local users to gain unauthorized
access to information (like passwords) and is tracked by
CVE-2008-2389.
Only openSUSE 10.2 was affected by this problem.
- libvorbis security problems
Several security problems were fixed in libvorbis:
CVE-2008-1419 - Division by zero
CVE-2008-1420 - integer overflow
CVE-2008-1423 - integer overflow
libvorbis was updated on all SUSE distributions.
- xine sdpplin_parse overflow
Xine was updated to fix a bug in the function sdpplin_parse()
that allowed remote attackers to access process memory out-of a
buffers bound.
This vulnerability can be used to execute arbitrary code remotely
if successfully exploited. (CVE-2008-0073)
Xine was updated on all SUSE distributions.
- vorbis-tools speex code execution problem
Specially crafted files or streams could potentially be abused to
trick applications that support speex into executing arbitrary code
(CVE-2008-1686) using vorbis-tools.
vorbis-tools was fixed on all SUSE distributions.
- pdns-recursor spoofing problems
Pdns-recursor was prone to a spoofing vulnerability which could be
abused to redirect clients or manipulate data. (CVE-2008-1637)
pdns / pdns-recursor is shipped on SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2
and 10.3 and was fixed there.
- openwsman post-auth remote code execution
Openwsman was updated to provide a fix for the included shttpd
web-server to patch a buffer overflow vulnerability in the HTTP
request parser.
This bug can only be exploited by authenticated users to execute
arbitrary code with the privileges of the openwsman/shttp
daemon. (CVE-2008-2097)
Only openSUSE 10.3 contains openwsman and was fixed.
______________________________________________________________________________
2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds
- Linux kernel update
We are currently preparing a kernel update for all products to catch up on security
problems and bugs found in the last months.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the

and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based
distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can
also find it on the first installation CD and included at the end of this
announcement.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The file server Samba has been updated to fix the following security
problem:
Secunia research discovered vulnerability in Samba, which can be
exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the
"receive_smb_raw()" function in lib/util_sock.c when parsing SMB
packets. This can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow
via an overly large SMB packet received in a client context.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
None.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
