______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
This is a respin of the previous Linux kernel update for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP2
as announced in SUSE-SA:2008:035, which got retracted due to an IDE-CDROM regression,
where any IDE CDROM access would hang or crash the system. Only this problem was fixed additionally.
The kernel version in this update is 2.6.16.60-0.27.
This kernel update fixes the following security problems:
CVE-2008-1615: On x86_64 a denial of service attack could be used by local
attackers to immediately panic / crash the machine.
CVE-2008-1669: Fixed a SMP ordering problem in fcntl_setlk could potentially
allow local attackers to execute code by timing file locking.
CVE-2008-2372: Fixed a resource starvation problem in the handling of ZERO
mmap pages.
CVE-2008-1673: The ASN1 implementation in (a) the Linux kernel, as used
in the cifs and ip_nat_snmp_basic modules does not properly validate
length values during decoding of ASN.1 BER data, which allows remote
attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code
via (1) a length greater than the working buffer, which can lead to an
unspecified overflow; (2) an oid length of zero, which can lead to an
off-by-one error; or (3) an indefinite length for a primitive encoding.
CVE-2008-2812: Various tty / serial devices did not check function pointers
for NULL before calling them, leading to potential crashes or code execution.
The devices affected are usually only accessible by the root user though.
CVE-2008-2931: A missing permission check in mount changing was added
which could have been used by local attackers to change the mount directory.
Additionally a very large number of bugs was fixed. Details can be found
in the RPM changelog of the included packages.
OCFS2 has been upgraded to the 1.4.1 release:
- Endian fixes
- Use slab caches for DLM objects
- Export DLM state info to debugfs
- Avoid ENOSPC in rare conditions when free inodes are reserved by
other nodes
- Error handling fix in ocfs2_start_walk_page_trans()
- Cleanup lockres printing
- Allow merging of extents
- Fix to allow changing permissions of symlinks
- Merged local fixes upstream (no code change)
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after installing the updated kernel.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
Our maintenance customers are notified individually. The packages are
offered for installation from the maintenance web:

6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file where you saved the
announcement. The output for a valid signature looks like:
gpg: Signature made <DATE> using RSA key ID 3D25D3D9
gpg: Good signature from "SuSE Security Team <security(a)suse.de>"
where <DATE> is replaced by the date the document was signed.
If the security team's key is not contained in your key ring, you can
import it from the first installation CD. To import the key, use the
command
gpg --import gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04.asc
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and the integrity of
a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered
with.
The internal rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the
authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the
filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it
contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on
RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during
installation. You can also find it on the first installation CD and at
the end of this announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

[security-announce] Revision of SUSE Security Announcement: Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:035)
by Marcus Meissner 28 Jul '08
by Marcus Meissner 28 Jul '08
28 Jul '08
Hi,
On Monday 21 Jul 2008 we published a security announcement regarding the
release of a Linux kernel update for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 Service
Pack 2.
This advisory is here:
http://www.novell.com/linux/security/advisories/2008_37_kernel.html
Unfortunately this kernel update introduces a critical regression in
handling of IDE CD-ROMs on little endian processor architectures (Intel
x86, AMD64 and Intel EM64T aka x86_64, and Intel Itanium aka ia64),
causing IDE-CDROMs not to work at all and even crash the machine.
Due to this problem we have removed the kernel update for the
three affected architectures from the update servers and from
https://download.novell.com/
Please note that this IDE-CDROM regression is not a security problem in
itself, but since the removal of the update disables available security
fixes it is announced here.
A Novell TID is also available, TID 7001037:
http://www.novell.com/support/php/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&extern…
We are working on publishing fixed kernel packages within this week.
Ciao, Marcus

accessible by the root user though.
CVE-2008-2750: The pppol2tp_recvmsg function in drivers/net/pppol2tp.c
in the Linux kernel allows remote attackers to cause a denial of
service (kernel heap memory corruption and system crash) and possibly
have unspecified other impact via a crafted PPPOL2TP packet that
results in a large value for a certain length variable.
CVE-2008-3247: On x86_64 systems, a incorrect buffer size in LDT
handling might lead to local untrusted attackers causing a crash
of the machine or potentially execute code with kernel privileges.
This problem only affects the openSUSE 11.0 kernel, since the problem
was introduced in the 2.6.25 kernel.
The update also has lots of other bugfixes that are listed in the
RPM changelog.
We previously also released a 2.6.25.9-0.2 kernel but did not
separately announce it. That update fixed the following security
problems:
CVE-2008-2372: A resource starvation issue within mmap was fixed,
which could have been used by local attackers to hang the machine.
CVE-2008-2826: A integer overflow in SCTP was fixed, which might have
been used by remote attackers to crash the machine or potentially
execute code.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

SUSE Security Announcement
Package: libxcrypt
Announcement ID: SUSE-SA:2008:036
Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:00:00 +0000
Affected Products: openSUSE 11.0
Vulnerability Type: use of weak password hash algorithm
Severity (1-10): 4
SUSE Default Package: yes
Cross-References: CVE-2008-3188
Content of This Advisory:
1) Security Vulnerability Resolved:
libxcrypt uses DES as hash algorithm instead of MD5
Problem Description
2) Solution or Work-Around
3) Special Instructions and Notes
4) Package Location and Checksums
5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
- see SUSE Security Summary report
6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
libxcrypt is used on openSUSE to calculate the hash value of
passwords. It can be configured to use DES, MD5 or blowfish. Due to
a bug in libxcrypt the DES algorithm was used if MD5 was configured
in /etc/default/passwd. The default algorithm used on openSUSE is
blowfish which worked as expected though.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
After applying the update you need to set the password again for all
accounts that are supposed to have an MD5 password hash.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The Linux kernel on SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 Service Pack 2 and fixes
the following security problems:
The version of the kernel is 2.6.16.60-0.25.
CVE-2008-2812: Various tty / serial devices did not check functionpointers
for NULL before calling them, leading to potential crashes or code execution.
The devices affected are usually only accessible by the root user though.
CVE-2008-2931: A missing permission check in mount changing was added
which could have been used by local attackers to change the mountdirectory.
Additionaly a very large number of bugs was fixed. Details can be found
in the RPM changelog of the included packages.
OCFS2 has been upgraded to the 1.4.1 release:
- Endian fixes
- Use slab caches for DLM objects
- Export DLM state info to debugfs
- Avoid ENOSPC in rare conditions when free inodes are reserved by
other nodes
- Error handling fix in ocfs2_start_walk_page_trans()
- Cleanup lockres printing
- Allow merging of extents
- Fix to allow changing permissions of symlinks
- Merged local fixes upstream (no code change)
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after installing the updated kernel.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
Our maintenance customers are notified individually. The packages are

To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

vulnerability fixes. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list or
download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for
more severe vulnerabilities.
Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP
server and via the YaST Online Update.
- moodle cross site scripting problem
An incorrect input validation in moodle could be exploited by
attackers to conduct cross site scripting attacks (CVE-2008-1502).
moodle is contained in and was fixed for openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3.
- clamav 0.93.3 release
The Opensource AV scanner clamav was brought to version 0.93.3.
The changelog lists CVE-2008-2713 as fixed, which was fixed in
0.93.1 already, and had minor additional fixes to it in 0.93.3.
The update contains otherwise just stability and bugfixes.
clamav was updated on all distributions containing clamav.
- zypper repository signature checking and addition
The zypp-refresh-patches wrapper in used by various online updater
applets in openSUSE to check for new updates accepted new repository
keys without asking the user, so parsing potentially corrupted repositories.
It did not import those keys into the trusted keyring, leaving only the
repository XML parsing endangered. Please note that this wrapper only
checks repositories, it does not do any package operations.
This issue was assigned Mitre CVE ID CVE-2008-3187.
Only zypper in openSUSE 10.2, 10.3 and 11.0 were affected by this
problem and fixed.
- mercurial input validation
mercurial on openSUSE 11.0 was improved regarding input validation.
Prior to this patch it was possible to touch files as root.
(CVE-2008-2942)
- poppler code execution problem
Poppler was updated to fixes a potential code execution
bug. (CVE-2008-2950)
Only openSUSE 11.0 was affected by this problem and received fixed
packages.

3) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
- Announcement authenticity verification:
SUSE security announcements are published via mailing lists and on Web
sites. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is
guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE
security announcements are published with a valid signature.
To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file
and run the command
gpg --verify <file>
replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement.
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based
distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can
also find it on the first installation CD and included at the end of this
announcement.
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
opensuse-security(a)opensuse.org
- General Linux and SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.
opensuse-security-announce(a)opensuse.org
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

Dear openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise users,
Several news sites recently published articles citing a report about
attacks on package managers [1]. Some unfortunately chose a wording
that could be misunderstood as if a rogue mirror server could trick
YaST into installing malicious software when applying regular
(security-)updates.
This is not the case. All official update repositories for SUSE
Linux based products use cryptographically signed packages and meta
data. YaST verifies the cryptographic signatures and rejects any
file whose signature doesn't match. Therefore it's not possible for
a rogue mirror to introduce malicious software.
Another problem outlined in the report was that mirror servers could
intentionally serve an old version of the update repository.
Therefore clients using that mirror would not get the latest
security updates and potentially stay vulnerable to known and
presumably already fixed problems.
SUSE already addresses this issue too.
- Firstly, YaST will not automatically downgrade installed packages.
Therefore an outdated repository can not undo an already applied
security fix.
- Secondly, starting with version 10.3 openSUSE uses a central
download redirector that directly serves the meta data. Stale
mirrors are therefore detected immediately. To avoid sending
clients to mirrors that do not have certain files (yet), the
download redirector also continuously monitors it's mirrors. It
only redirects to servers that are known to have the file in
question.
For SUSE Linux enterprise products only servers owned by Novell
are used via secure https connections.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
Mozilla Firefox was updated to version 2.0.0.15, fixing various bugs
including following security bugs.
CVE-2008-2798 CVE-2008-2799 MFSA 2008-21:
Mozilla developers identified and fixed several stability bugs in the
browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some
of these crashes showed evidence of memory corruption under certain
circumstances and we presume that with enough effort at least some
of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
CVE-2008-2800 MFSA 2008-22:
Mozilla contributor moz_bug_r_a4 submitted a set of vulnerabilities
which allow scripts from one document to be executed in the context
of a different document. These vulnerabilities could be used by an
attacker to violate the same-origin policy and perform an XSS attack.
CVE-2008-2801 MFSA 2008-23:
Security researcher Collin Jackson reported a series of vulnerabilities
which allow JavaScript to be injected into signed JARs and executed
under the context of the JAR's signer. This could allow an attacker
to run JavaScript in a victim's browser with the privileges of a
different website, provided the attacker possesses a JAR signed by
the other website.
CVE-2008-2802 MFSA 2008-24:
Mozilla contributor moz_bug_r_a4 reported a vulnerability that
allowed non-privileged XUL documents to load chrome scripts from
the fastload file. This could allow an attacker to run arbitrary
JavaScript code with chrome privileges.
CVE-2008-2803 MFSA 2008-25:
Mozilla contributor moz_bug_r_a4 reported a vulnerability which allows
arbitrary JavaScript to be executed with chrome privileges. The
privilege escalation was possible because JavaScript loaded via
mozIJSSubScriptLoader.loadSubScript() was not using XPCNativeWrappers
when accessing content. This could allow an attacker to overwrite
trusted objects with arbitrary code which would be executed with
chrome privileges when the trusted objects were called by the browser.
CVE-2008-2805 MFSA 2008-27:
Opera developer Claudio Santambrogio reported a vulnerability which
allows malicious content to force the browser into uploading local
files to the remote server. This could be used by an attacker to
steal arbitrary files from a victim's computer.
CVE-2008-2806 MFSA 2008-28:
Security researcher Gregory Fleischer reported a vulnerability
in the way Mozilla indicates the origin of a document to the Java
plugin. This vulnerability could allow a malicious Java applet to
bypass the same-origin policy and create arbitrary socket connections
to other domains.
CVE-2008-2807 MFSA 2008-29:
Mozilla developer Daniel Glazman demonstrated that an improperly
encoded .properties file in an add-on can result in uninitialized
memory being used. This could potentially result in small chunks of
data from other programs being exposed in the browser.
CVE-2008-2808 MFSA 2008-30:
Mozilla contributor Masahiro Yamada reported that file URLs in
directory listings were not being HTML escaped properly when the
filenames contained particular characters. This resulted in files
from directory listings being opened in unintended ways or files not
being able to be opened by the browser altogether.
CVE-2008-2809 MFSA 2008-31:
Mozilla developer John G. Myers reported a weakness in the trust
model used by Mozilla regarding alternate names on self-signed
certificates. A user could be prompted to accept a self-signed
certificate from a website which includes alt-name entries. If
the user accepted the certificate, they would also extend trust to
any alternate domains listed in the certificate, despite not being
prompted about the additional domains. This technique could be used
by an attacker to impersonate another server.
CVE-2008-2810 MFSA 2008-32:
Mozilla community member Geoff reported a vulnerability in the way
Mozilla opens URL files sent directly to the browser. He demonstrated
that such files were opened with local file privileges, giving the
remote content access to read from the local filesystem. If a user
opened a bookmark to a malicious page in this manner, the page could
potentially read from other local files on the user's computer.
CVE-2008-2811 MFSA 2008-33:
Security research firm Astabis, via the iSIGHT Partners GVP Program,
reported a vulnerability in Mozilla's block reflow code. This
vulnerability could be used by an attacker to crash the browser and
run arbitrary code on the victim's computer.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please close and restart all running instances of Firefox after the update.
Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

Vulnerability Type: DNS cache poisoning
Severity (1-10): 9
SUSE Default Package: no
Cross-References: CVE-2008-1447
Content of This Advisory:
1) Security Vulnerability Resolved:
DNS cache poisoning
2) Solution or Work-Around
3) Special Instructions and Notes
4) Package Location and Checksums
5) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds:
6) Authenticity Verification and Additional Information
______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The bind daemon is responsible for resolving hostnames in IP addresses and
vice versa.
The new version of bind uses a random transaction-ID (TRXID) and a random
UDP source-port for DNS queries to address DNS cache poisoning attacks
possible because of the "birthday paradox" and an attack discovered by Dan
Kaminsky. Unfortunately we do not have details about Kaminsky's attack and
have to trust the statement that a random UDP source-port is sufficient to
stop it.
DNS servers that do not support recursive queries or do not use a cache
(authoritative only servers) are not vulnerable too.
Update packages of bind9 for SLES8 will be available soon.
The glibc stub resolver is known to be vulnerable too and we will publish
updates as soon as possible.
Note, a local attacker can always sniff DNS queries and generate spoofed
responses easily.
If you use the UDP source-port number of the DNS server in your firewall
configuration, for example to let DNS queries through your packetfilter,
then you have to take steps to adapt your filter rules to the new behavior
of the DNS server.
2) Solution or Work-Around
To protect your infrastructure from cache poisoning attacks you should
provide two DNS servers.
One that is authoritative only and accessible from the Internet to resolve
queries for your local systems that are available over the Internet. The
other system (caching) is not accessible over the Internet and can be used
by internal clients to recursively lookup names and addresses.
But we encourage you to install the bind update as soon as possible too.
If you use the latest update of pdns-recursor you are not vulnerable to
this attack.
For the glibc stub resolver bug you can install a local secure DNS for-
warder on your machine or make a DNS forwarder available for a protected
network.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please restart the bind daemon after the update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.

1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
The Linux kernel on the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 Service Pack 1 line
of products was updated to fix quite a number of security problems:
CVE-2007-6282: A remote attacker could crash the IPSec/IPv6 stack
by sending a bad ESP packet. This requires the host to be able to
receive such packets (default filtered by the firewall).
CVE-2008-2136: A problem in SIT IPv6 tunnel handling could be used
by remote attackers to immediately crash the machine.
CVE-2008-1615: On x86_64 a denial of service attack could be used by
local attackers to immediately panic / crash the machine.
CVE-2007-6206: An information leakage during core dumping of root
processes was fixed.
CVE-2008-1669: Fixed a SMP ordering problem in fcntl_setlk could
potentially allow local attackers to execute code by timing file
locking.
CVE-2008-1375: Fixed a dnotify race condition, which could be used
by local attackers to potentially execute code.
CVE-2007-5500: A ptrace bug could be used by local attackers to hang
their own processes indefinitely.
CVE-2008-1367: Clear the "direction" flag before calling signal
handlers. For specific not yet identified programs under specific
timing conditions this could potentially have caused memory corruption
or code execution.
CVE-2007-6151: The isdn_ioctl function in isdn_common.c allowed local
users to cause a denial of service via a crafted ioctl struct in
which ioctls is not null terminated, which triggers a buffer overflow.
Non security related changes:
OCFS2 was updated to version v1.2.9-1-r3100.
Also a huge number of bugs were fixed. Please refer to the RPM
changelog for a detailed list.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
Please reboot the machine after installing the updated packages.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Solved Security Vulnerabilities
To avoid flooding mailing lists with SUSE Security Announcements for minor
issues, SUSE Security releases weekly summary reports for the low profile
vulnerability fixes. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list or
download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for
more severe vulnerabilities.
Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP
server and via the YaST Online Update.
- sudo not flushing stdin
This update of sudo flushes the stdin buffer on password
timeout. Unflushed buffers can lead to leaking the password via a
parent process reading stdin after sudo exits.
This issue only affects openSUSE 10.3 and was fixed there.
- courier-authlib SQL injection possibility
courier-authlib was updated to fix a bug that allowed SQL
injections. (CVE-2008-2667)
Only openSUSE 10.3 and 11.0 were affected.
- gnome-screensaver
Using gnome-screensaver an attacker could log in without a valid
password if the NIS server is down. (CVE-2008-0887)
gnome-screensaver was affected on SUSE Linux Enterprise 10, SUSE
Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3 and was fixed there.
- clamav 0.93.1
Clamav was updated to version 0.93.1. It fixes various bugs and
one minor security issue:
CVE-2008-2713: libclamav/petite.c in ClamAV before 0.93.1 allows
remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted Petite
file that triggers an out-of-bounds read.
clamav was updated on all products containing clamav.
- PHP 5 security update
php5 was updated to fix various bugs and security problems:
- possible stack-based buffer overflow CVE-2008-2050
- incomplete escapeshellcmd() CVE-2008-2051
- printf() integer overflow CVE-2008-1384
- insecure GENERATE_SEED macro CVE-2008-2107
- timezone update for DST in Pakistan
On openSUSE 10.2 up to 11.0 php5 was updated to 5.2.6. For SUSE
Linux Enterprise 10 SP1 and SP2 the fixes were backported.
- ImageMagick, GraphicsMagick security problems
ImageMagick and GraphicsMagick were affected by two security problems:
CVE-2008-1096: Buffer overflow in the handling of XCF files
CVE-2008-1097: Heap buffer overflow in the handling of PCX files
ImageMagick was updated on all products. GraphicsMagick is only
found on openSUSE 10.3 and 11.0 and was updated there.
- mtr potential remote overflow
MTR was updated to fix a stack based buffer overflow which could
potentially be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary
code (CVE-2008-2357).
mtr was updated on all SUSE Linux based products.
- bind root zone update
The IP number for the "L" root DNS server changed.
This patch updates the root.hint zone file to get the new IP number.
This is only security related and not a true vulnerability since the
old server is still operating correctly.
- pcre buffer overflow
Specially crafted regular expressions could lead to a buffer overflow
in the pcre library. Applications using pcre to process regular
expressions from untrusted sources could therefore potentially be
exploited by attackers to execute arbitrary code (CVE-2008-2371).
Only the pcre version on openSUSE 10.3 was affected by this problem
and received fixed packages.
- tomcat55 and tomcat6 cross site scripting problem
tomcat was updated to fix a cross-site-scripting vulnerability in
the host-manager. (CVE-2008-1947)
Since the problem only affects tomcat 5.5 and tomcat 6 only those
were fixed in openSUSE 10.3 and 11.0. Other products were not
affected.
- squid denial of service problem in ASN.1 parsing
Squid was updated to fix an old denial-of-service bug that can
occur while parsing ASN.1 data. (CVE-2004-0918)
More details can be found on:
http://www.squid-cache.org/Advisories/SQUID-2008_1.txt
Only Squid 3.0 was affected, which is only on openSUSE 11.0 and
was fixed there.
- freetype2 various integer overflows
This update of freetype2 fixes several potential vulnerabilities
reported by iDefense.
CVE-2008-1806: Integer overflow in FreeType2 allows context-dependent
attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted set of 16-bit
length values within the Private dictionary table in a Printer Font
Binary (PFB) file, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
CVE-2008-1807: FreeType2 allow context-dependent attackers to execute
arbitrary code via an invalid "number of axes" field in a Printer
Font Binary (PFB) file, which triggers a free of arbitrary memory
locations, leading to memory corruption.
CVE-2008-1808: Multiple off-by-one errors in FreeType2 before 2.3.6
allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via
(1) a crafted table in a Printer Font Binary (PFB) file or (2)
a crafted SHC instruction in a TrueType Font (TTF) file, which
triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
Freetype2 was updated on all distributions.

2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds
None listed this week.

SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the
world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free
and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a
package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with.

- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to
<opensuse-security-announce+subscribe(a)opensuse.org>.

______________________________________________________________________________
1) Problem Description and Brief Discussion
This kernel update fixes the following security problems:
CVE-2007-6282: A remote attacker could crash the IPSec/IPv6 stack
by sending a bad ESP packet. This requires the host to be able to
receive such packets (default filtered by the firewall).
CVE-2008-1615: On x86_64 systems a denial of service attack could be
used by local attackers to immediately panic / crash the machine.
CVE-2008-1375: Fixed a dnotify race condition, which could be used
by local attackers to potentially execute code.
CVE-2008-1367: Clear the "direction" flag before calling signal
handlers. For specific not yet identified programs under specific
timing conditions this could potentially have caused memory corruption
or code execution.
Other changes and improvements include:
- OCFS2 updated to 1.2.9
- Significant bug fixes.
More details are available in the RPM changelog.
2) Solution or Work-Around
There is no known workaround, please install the update packages.
3) Special Instructions and Notes
You need to reboot the machine after installing this update.
4) Package Location and Checksums
The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST
Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and
automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them.
Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually
and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this
announcement. Then install the packages using the command
rpm -Fhv <file.rpm>
to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the
downloaded RPM package.
