3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The the flexible and powerful FTP command-line client lftp is vulnerable
to two remote buffer overflows.
When using lftp via HTTP or HTTPS to execute commands like 'ls' or 'rels'
specially prepared directories on the server can trigger a buffer overflow
in the HTTP handling functions of lftp to possibly execute arbitrary code
on the client-side.
Please note, to exploit these bugs an attacker has to control the server-
side of the context and the attacker will only gain access to the account
of the user that is executing lftp.
There is no temporary workaround known.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages
are being offered to install from the maintenance web.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SUSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- mc
By using a special combination of links in archive-files it is possible
to execute arbitrary commands while mc tries to open it in its VFS.
The packages are currently tested and will be release as soon as
possible.
- mod_gzip
The apache module mod_gzip is vulnerable to remote code execution
while running in debug-mode. We do not ship this module in debug-mode
but future versions will include the fix.
Additionally the mod_gzip code was audited to fix more possible security
related bugs.
- freeradius
Two vulnerabilities were found in the FreeRADIUS package.
The remote denial-of-service attack bug was fixed and new packages
will be released as soon as testing was successfully finished.
The other bug is a remote buffer overflow in the module rlm_smb.
We do not ship this module and will fix it for future releases.
- tripwire
Tripwire is a file integrity checker. The tripwire version on SuSE Linux
8.2 and 9.0 do crash when a requested file does not exists.
New packages will be available soon.
- cvs
The cvs server-side can be tricked to create files in the root filesystem
of the server by requesting malformed modules. The permissions on the
root filesystem normally prevent this malfunction.
New packages will be available soon.
- irssi
Under special circumstances the the irc-client irssi can be crashed
remotely by other irc-clients.
A fix will be available soon.
- atftp
A buffer overflow vulnerability discovered by Rick Patel has been
fixed in the atftpd (trivial file transfer protocol, UDP oriented)
daemon, contained in the atftp package. Update packages for the
affected SUSE Linux distributions 8.1 and 8.2 have been published on
our ftp server today.
We explicitly thank Dirk Mueller, KDE developer, for notifying SUSE
Security about the pending treatment of this incident.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over
the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important
to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be
sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing
the package. There are two verification methods that can be used
independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded
file or rpm package:
1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement.
2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package.
1) execute the command
md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm>
after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors.
Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the
announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is
cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de)
the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package.
We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the
announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt
and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all
md5 sums for the files are useless.
2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity
of an rpm package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the
filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
suse-security-announce(a)suse.com
- SUSE's announce-only mailing list.
Only SUSE's security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-announce-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
For general information or the frequently asked questions (faq)
send mail to:
<suse-security-info(a)suse.com> or
<suse-security-faq(a)suse.com> respectively.

Dear suse-security-announce subscribers and SUSE LINUX users,
having provided security-relevant fixes for version 7.3 of our home user
product, SuSE Linux, for two years, we would like to inform you that SuSE
Linux 7.3 will be discontinued for all architectures. Vulnerabilities
found after December 15th 2003 will not be fixed any more for SuSE Linux
7.3.
By consequence, the SuSE Linux 7.3 distribution directories on our ftp
server ftp.suse.com will be moved to the /pub/suse/discontinued/ directory
tree structure; the 7.3 directories in the update trees will follow later
in January 2004.
The discontinuation of SuSE Linux 7.3 enables us to focus on the SUSE
LINUX distributions of a newer release date to ensure that our customers
can continuously take advantage of the quality that they are used to with
SUSE LINUX products.
This announcement holds true for SuSE Linux 7.3 only. As usual, SUSE
will continue to provide update packages for the following home users
distributions:
SuSE Linux 8.0
SuSE Linux 8.1
SuSE Linux 8.2
and
SUSE LINUX 9.0
for a two-year period after the release of the respective distribution.
Please note that the maintenance cycles of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server
products and products based on the SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server operating
system are not affected by this announcement. To learn more about SUSE
LINUX business products, please visit
http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/.
If you have any questions regarding this announcement, please do
not hesitate to contact SUSE security at <security(a)suse.de>.
Best regards,
Roman Drahtmüller,
SUSE Security.

1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The rsync suite provides client and server tools to easily support an
administrator keeping the files of different machines in sync.
In most private networks the rsync client tool is used via SSH to fulfill
his tasks. In an open environment rsync is run in server mode accepting
connections from many untrusted hosts with, but mostly without,
authentication.
The rsync server drops its root privileges soon after it was started and
per default creates a chroot environment.
Due to insufficient integer/bounds checking in the server code a heap
overflow can be triggered remotely to execute arbitrary code. This code
does not get executed as root and access is limited to the chroot
environment. The chroot environment maybe broken afterwards by abusing
further holes in system software or holes in the chroot setup.
Your are not vulnerable as long as you do not use rsync in server mode
or you use authentication to access the rsync server.
As a temporary workaround you can disable access to your rsync server for
untrusted parties, enable authentication or switch back to rsync via SSH.

- discontinue of SuSE Linux 7.3
Two years after the release, SUSE will discontinue providing updates
and security fixes for the SuSE Linux 7.3 consumer product on the
Intel i386 and the PPC Power PC architectures. Vulnerabilities found
after December 15th 2003 will not be fixed any more for SuSE Linux
7.3.
Directory structures referring to the SuSE Linux 7.3 release will be
moved to the discontinued/ tree on our main ftp server ftp.suse.com
the distribution directories first, followed by the update/ directory
tree in January 2004.
Please note that our SuSE Linux Enterprise Server family products have
a much longer support period. These products are not concerned by this
announcement.
- KDE
New KDE packages are currently being tested. These packages fixes
several vulnerabilities:
+ remote root compromise (CAN-2003-0690)
+ weak cookies (CAN-2003-0692)
+ SSL man-in-the-middle attack
+ information leak through HTML-referrer (CAN-2003-0459)
+ wrong file permissions of config files
The packages will be release as soon as testing is finished.
- mc
By using a special combination of links in archive-files it is possible
to execute arbitrary commands while mc tries to open it in its VFS.
The packages are currently tested and will be release as soon as
possible.
- apache1/2
The widely used HTTP server apache has several security vulnerabilities:
- locally exploitable buffer overflow in the regular expression code.
The attacker must be able to modify .htaccess or httpd.conf.
(affects: mod_alias and mod_rewrite)
- under some circumstances mod_cgid will output its data to the
wrong client (affects: apache2)
Update packages are available on our FTP servers.
- screen
A buffer overflow in screen was reported. Since SuSE Linux 8.0
we do not ship screen with the s-bit anymore. An update package
will be released for 7.3 as soon as possible.
- mod_gzip
The apache module mod_gzip is vulnerable to remote code execution
while running in debug-mode. We do not ship this module in debug-mode
but future versions will include the fix.
Additionally the mod_gzip code was audited to fix more possible security
related bugs.
- unace
The tool unace for handling the archive format ACE is vulnerable to
a buffer overflow that can be triggered with long file-names as command
line argument. This only affects unace version 2.5. Unfortunately this
tool is provided closed source only from the author. Therefore we are
unable to check for other bugs or look at the patch.
Update packages are available from our FTP servers.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
To subscribe, send an email to

problem description, discussion, solution and upgrade information
2) pending vulnerabilities, solutions, workarounds:
- KDE
- mc
- apache1/2
- freeradius
- screen
- mod_gzip
- unace
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
This security update fixes a serious vulnerability in the Linux
kernel. A missing bounds check in the brk() system call allowed
processes to request memory beyond the maximum size allowed for tasks,
causing kernel memory to be mapped into the process' address space.
This allowed local attackers to obtain super user privileges.
An exploit for this vulnerability is circulating in the wild, and
has been used to compromise OpenSource development servers.
There is no temporary workaround for this bug.
This update also fixes several other security issues in the
kernel
- race condition with files opened via O_DIRECT which could
be exploited to read disk blocks randomly. This could include
blocks of previously deleted files with sensitive content.
- don't allow users to send signals to kmod
- when reading the RTC, don't leak kernel stack data to user space
SPECIAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
==============================
The following paragraphs will guide you through the installation
process in a step-by-step fashion. The character sequence "****"
marks the beginning of a new paragraph. In some cases, you decide
if the paragraph is needed for you or not. Please read through all
of the steps down to the end. All of the commands that need to be
executed are required to be run as the superuser (root). Each step
relies on the steps before to complete successfully.
**** Step 1: Determine the needed kernel type
Please use the following command to find the kernel type that is
installed on your system:
rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz
The following options are possible (disregarding the version and build
number following the name, separated by the "-" character):
k_deflt # default kernel, good for most systems.
k_i386 # kernel for older processors and chipsets
k_athlon # kernel made specifically for AMD Athlon(tm) family processors
k_psmp # kernel for Pentium-I dual processor systems
k_smp # kernel for SMP systems (Pentium-II and above)
**** Step 2: Download the package for your system
Please download the kernel RPM package for your distribution with the
name starting as indicated by Step 1. The list of all kernel rpm
packages is appended below. Note: The kernel-source package does not
contain any binary kernel in bootable form. Instead, it contains the
sources that the binary kernel rpm packages are made from. It can be
used by administrators who have decided to build their own kernel.
Since the kernel-source.rpm is an installable (compiled) package that
contains sources for the linux kernel, it is not the source RPM for
the kernel RPM binary packages.
The kernel RPM binary packages for the distributions can be found at these
locations below ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/.
7.3/kernel/2.4.18-20031204
8.0/kernel/2.4.18-20031204
8.1/rpm/i586
8.2/rpm/i586
9.0/rpm/i586
After downloading the kernel RPM package for your system, you should
verify the authenticity of the kernel rpm package using the methods as
listed in section 3) of each SUSE Security Announcement.
**** Step 3: Installing your kernel rpm package
Install the rpm package that you have downloaded in Steps 3 or 4 with
the command
rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force <K_FILE.RPM>
where <K_FILE.RPM> is the name of the rpm package that you downloaded.
Warning: After performing this step, your system will likely not be
able to boot if the following steps have not been fully
applied.
If you run SUSE LINUX 8.1 and haven't applied the previous
kernel update (SUSE-SA:2003:034), AND use the freeswan package,
you also need to update the freeswan rpm as a dependency as offered
by YOU (Yast Online Update). The package can be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.1/rpm/i586/
**** Step 4: configuring and creating the initrd
The initrd is a ramdisk that is being loaded into the memory of your
system together with the kernel boot image by the bootloader. The
kernel uses the content of this ramdisk to execute commands that must
be run before the kernel can mount its actual root filesystem. It is
usually used to initialize scsi drivers or NIC drivers for diskless
operation.
The variable INITRD_MODULES (set in the files /etc/rc.config up to
7.3) or /etc/sysconfig/kernel (after and including 8.0)) determines
which kernel modules will be loaded in the initrd before the kernel
has mounted its actual root filesystem. The variable should contain
your scsi adapter (if any) or filesystem driver modules.
With the installation of the new kernel, the initrd has to be
re-packed with the update kernel modules. Please run the command
mk_initrd
as root to create a new init rmadisk (initrd) for your system.
On SuSE Linux 8.1 and later, this is done automatically when the
RPM is installed.
**** Step 5: bootloader
If you have a 7.x system, you must now run the command
lilo
as root to initialize the lilo bootloader for your system. Then
proceed to the next step.
If you run a SUSE LINUX 8.x or a SLES8 system, there are two options:
Depending on your software configuration, you have the lilo bootloader
or the grub bootloader installed and initialized on your system.
The grub bootloader does not require any further actions to be
performed after the new kernel images have been moved in place by the
rpm Update command.
If you have a lilo bootloader installed and initialized, then the lilo
program must be run as root. Use the command
grep LOADER_TYPE /etc/sysconfig/bootloader
to find out which boot loader is configured. If it is lilo, then you
must run the lilo command as root. If grub is listed, then your system
does not require any bootloader initialization.
Warning: An improperly installed bootloader may render your system
unbootable.
**** Step 6: reboot
If all of the steps above have been successfully applied to your
system, then the new kernel including the kernel modules and the
initrd should be ready to boot. The system needs to be rebooted for
the changes to become active. Please make sure that all steps are
complete, then reboot using the command
shutdown -r now
or
init 6
Your system should now shut down and reboot with the new kernel.
Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages
are being offered to install from the maintenance web.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SUSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- KDE
New KDE packages are currently being tested. These packages fixes
several vulnerabilities:
+ remote root compromise (CAN-2003-0690)
+ weak cookies (CAN-2003-0692)
+ SSL man-in-the-middle attack
+ information leak through HTML-referrer (CAN-2003-0459)
+ wrong file permissions of config files
The packages will be release as soon as testing is finished.
- mc
By using a special combination of links in archive-files it is possible
to execute arbitrary commands while mc tries to open it in its VFS.
The packages are currently tested and will be release as soon as
possible.
- apache1/2
The widely used HTTP server apache has several security vulnerabilities:
- locally exploitable buffer overflow in the regular expression code.
The attacker must be able to modify .htaccess or httpd.conf.
(affects: mod_alias and mod_rewrite)
- under some circumstances mod_cgid will output its data to the
wrong client (affects: apache2)
Update packages are available on our FTP servers.

Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.

- kernel
3) standard appendix (further information)
______________________________________________________________________________
1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The gnupg (the SUSE package is named gpg) package is the most widely
used software for cryptographic encryption/decryption of data.
Two independent errors have been found in gpg (GnuPG) packages as shipped
with SUSE products:
A) A format string error in the client code that does key retrieval
from a (public) key server
B) A cryptographic error in gpg that results in a compromise of a
cryptographic keypair if ElGamal signing keys have been used for
generating the key.
A)
There exists a format string error in thhe client code for key retrieval
from a keyserver. gpg-1.2.x version packages are affected by this
vulnerability.
The format string error can be used by an attacker performing a
man-in-the-middle-attack between you and your keyserver, or by a
compromised keyserver. The result is a crash of gpg or a potential
execution of arbitrary code provided by the attacker, if the keyserver
is used for key retrieval at the time of the attack.
B)
Werner Koch, the author of the gpg package, has publicly announced a
weakness in gpg that has been reported to him by Phong Nguyen:
ElGamal signing keys can be attacked within seconds to reveal the
private key of the keypair. It is strongly advised that ElGamal signing
keys should be revoked immediately. Only ElGamal keys are affected, other
types are not vulnerable.
To find out if you are using an ElGamal signing key, list your public
keys using the command
gpg --list-keys your_keyid
Example:
$ gpg --list-keys build(a)suse.de
pub 1024D/9C800ACA 2000-10-19 SuSE Package Signing Key <build(a)suse.de>
sub 2048g/8495160C 2000-10-19 [expires: 2006-02-12]
$
If your key lists a capital "G" after the key's length (like in
pub 1536G/...), then your key is vulnerable. A small letter "g" after
the key length does NOT indicate any problem.
ElGamal keys can be used for primary keys as well as for subkeys. In the
case where only a subkey is an ElGamal key, it is sufficient to revoke
this specific subkey.
To revoke a key, generate a revocation certificate using the following
command:
gpg --gen-revoke your_keyid > revocation_certificate.pgp
Then, the revokation certificate must be imported into your keyring:
gpg --import < revocation_certificate.pgp
As your last action, send the key with its revocation certificate
to the keyservers that know your key:
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --send-keys your_keyid
ElGamal keys can only be generated by gpg if a special option (--expert)
has been used to reveal "expert" options, and if a warning has been
ignored after your choice to use ElGamal keys. Such keys are rare
(Werner Koch reports 848 primary ElGamal signing keys and 324 vulnerable
subkeys on the keyservers.). Therefore, we expect that only experienced
users of gpg may be vulnerable to the ElGamal signing key error.
UPDATES:
The nature of the ElGamal error implies that a possible compromise was
made possible with the generation of the key in the past already. There is
no way that an update package can prevent the compromise. However,
the update packages that we provide prevent the use of ElGamal signing
keys for key generation once the packages are installed.
SUSE Linux 8.1 and before contain a gpg package of version 1.0.x
(vulnerable to the ElGamal signing key bug only), a version of 1.2.x
has been shipped with SUSE Linux 8.2 and 9.0 (vulnerable to both errors).
We provide update packages that fix both vulnerabilities, meaning that
only the packages affected by both vulnerabilities are being updated.
For this reason, there are only update packages for SuSE Linux 8.2
and SUSE LINUX 9.0 available for download.
Important Note:
A proper installation of the gpg update package is critical for future
updates on your system. The gpg program is being used by YaST Online
Update (YOU) to verify the authenticity of your update package. A failure
of a signature verification will result in a failure of the installation
of update packages.

- kernel: brk() vulnerability
All SUSE Linux kernels (except for the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8)
are vulnerable to a privilege escalation vulnerability that can be
exploited by an attacker who has local shell acccess to your system.
We are in the process of testing the update packages for all of our
products. The packages are expected to be released within hours and
are being published as they are ready.
Please follow the guidelines in the announcement about the kernel that
follows this announcement.
Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
