Hi there, the next openSUSE status meeting will take place at the official #opensuse IRC channel on freenode (irc://irc.freenode.net/openSUSE) today at 2006/07/04 18:00 CET (16:00 GMT) This meeting is meant to discuss the latest developments in and around openSUSE. The agenda for this meeting is: - Status 10.2 - Status wiki - Setup a seperate translation wiki as per discussion on opensuse-wiki(a)opensuse.org? - OpenSUSE front page redesign? What is happening? - Status build service - Q&A - from bgerber: Small memory foot print? I would like to have a version of SUSE Linux with a small memory installation. I know there are small memory versions, but I like the whole feel of SUSE Linux and would like a version to run on old systems. Could this be a community effort with some assistance from SUSE Developers? Guides on what to do? NOTE: We're aware that July 4th is a major holiday in the US AND that the first semifinal of the FIFA World Cup 2006 takes place today with Germany playing against Italy. As last week's meeting was already cancelled we will hold this meeting anyway. SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 1 is available It has one major problem, but it is highly usable apart from that. * The installation using the GUI interface does not work, please select "Text Mode" when booting from CD media (#183827) * download of release notes does fail (server side issue) The difference to SL 10.1 is mainly in version updates in some areas (esp. the YaST package manager and KDE). Important SUSE Linux 10.1 update

From today on we provide an important patch for the package management. It contains various bug fixes and performance improvements for YaST and Zen updater. We recommend to install this patch with YaST Online Update (YOU). For that please start YaST manually through the menu and use the 'Online Update' module. This version still lacks patch rpm support which will be delivered with an upcoming update. We regret any inconvenience you experienced so far. We consider this update a large step forward and will continue improving our product constantly. Special thanks to our openSUSE community members and their efforts helping us to deliver this update. openSUSE build service becomes productive ...

The build service is still in its alpha phase, but we will use it for producing our supplementarry updates from now on. This means the build service does create already packages for daily usage. Interesting projects which get build there currently are * KDE:KDE3 (contains already KDE 3.5.3 and Qt 3.3.6) * KDE:Backports (contains updated KDE apps without the need to update also the complete KDE (big advantage compared to supplementarry)) * OSCAR cluster software * Various groupware software (Kolab, OX, eGroupWare) * Apache + php * Kernel * the openSUSE:Tool chain This means that the supplementarry dirs for KDE and misc got moved from ftp.suse.com to the build service. Gnome will follow.
