[opensuse-announce] SUSE Linux 10.1 "Remastered" available

I'm happy to announce the availability of SUSE Linux 10.1 "remastered". This release combines the 10.1 GM and all online updates that we have released for 10.1 so far, including libzypp, which should make the installing and working experience much smoother for everyone. We have created new CD ISO images and supplied delta ISOs from the goldmaster. The non-OSS DVD images will show up next week, we had to retract and will remaster. The ftp installation tree remains unchanged. The files have a "Remastered" in their name and a symbolic link from the old name to them so that references will continue to work. If you are running SUSE Linux 10.1 already, there is no need to download these images at all. Just do an update from our update repository to get all our security updates. This remastered media are usefull for new installations. Our Basilisk Lizard has shown this week its other side and I'd like to thank especially Jürgen, Lars, Christoph, Steffen, Jiri, Ladislav for taming the lizard. Fights come with a prize to pay - ours are two-fold: The PowerPC distribution and the CD installation. We only have DVDs for i386 and x86-64 this time. They are available via ftp.opensuse.org and its mirrors. Mini-ISOs for remote installation are available as well. So, there are neither CDs nor deltas. Just ignore the message - dbus is running Bug #209009 * Suspend to disk will fail with an error message "The resume device configured in /etc/suspend.conf". (fixed powersave package should be in factory by monday, until then you can edit /etc/suspend.conf and put your resume device from the resume=... boot parameter there. However, the fixed package is better). * The x86-64 uses nearly double the disk space for installed packages than usual. It looks like a bug in binutils stripping the binaries Bug #210331 * Instead of /dev/hd for IDE disks using Intel ICHx chipsets the libata interfaces are used and disks show up as /dev/sd Bug #210478 * zen-updater always shows patterns to update Bug #198379 * It's not possible to start applications via kdesu, eg yast2. Workaround: use "su" in a shell. Bug #208272 * The bootloader configuration on BIOS-based RAID (so-called FakeRAID) systems fails. BUG #208076 * gnome-screensaver does not accept the correct password. Bug #204364 * Workaround: Kill the gnome-screensaver process. This is the last external Alpha, we will deliver in three weeks our first Beta of openSUSE 10.2. I'm glad to announce the fourth alpha release of our openSUSE 10.2 distribution. The codename of openSUSE 10.2 is "Basilisk Lizard". With the rename of the distribution from SUSE Linux to openSUSE, we renamed also the name in bugzilla.novell.com so that you have to report bugs against "openSUSE 10.2". Compared with Alpha4, we've made a number of significant changes: * We switched to kernel 2.6.18rc5 - and use only SMP kernel, the default kernel is smp, the kernel-smp is now dropped. Now all kernel module packages (kmp) and the Xen packages have been adopted for the new kernel. * KDE now uses the new kickoff menu. * We switched to GNOME 2.16 Beta (2.15.92) and have now all packages in. * The new branding "openSUSE" should be shown in all places. Any SUSE Linux 10.1 branding is worth a bug report. * Finished integration of X11 R7.1. * Further refinement of patterns used in the package manager for grouping of software. Please look at them and discuss the contents on the opensuse-factory mailing list. * Start of removal of unneeded SuSEconfig scripts * No reboot after CD1, displaying of the slideshow during all media * YaST runs during installation in a window (the background is blue, this will change to a nice wallpaper) * Update of sysfsutils to 2.1.0, dbus to 0.92. * integration of new tool pam-config and fixes to pam configuration. * Further work on package management: Support for patch and delta RPMs in YaST online update (not yet in zmd), refactoring and improving of code. * Option to install JFS in YaST again - as experimental, unsupported filesystem. All these changes needed changes by other packages, so a lot of other packages have been fixed to build again (and updated), and a few still need updating. All changes are shown on CD1 in the file ChangeLog. Alphas of openSUSE are rather untested and more for the experimental folks. I do not suggest to use it in production. But I do consider especially Alpha4 an important milestone for development and testing and use it on my own Laptop.
