[opensuse-announce] Accessibility Wiki Launched

Over the weekend, Accessibility pages were created on opensuse.org's Wiki (See http://en.opensuse.org/Accessibility.) The intent is to highlight efforts made within the openSUSE community to improve Accessibility (a11y) standards within our distribution, as well as become more aware of who within our community works on a11y issues. I invite everyone to come visit our new wiki pages and get yourself listed in the People Directory if you have any involvement whatsoever with a11y. Do you have a passion for Linux and a desire to promote openSUSE? Would you like to paint the world's desktops openSUSE green? If so, the openSUSE marketing team wants you! Some of the things the marketing team should address: * Ensure we publicize community events and meetings to maximize turnout and participation * Write articles, sneak peeks, and other features for news.opensuse.org * Create artwork, banners, logos, etc. for openSUSE * Help organize launch parties, local events, installfests, and talks at LUGs * Support the openSUSE booth at shows * Create presentations and materials that can be reused to promote openSUSE * Give presentations about openSUSE, the openSUSE Build Service, Linux, and other related topics to interested groups In short, we're looking for openSUSE contributors (and potential contributors) to help publicize community events more effectively, so anyone who's interested in contributing to openSUSE knows how they can do so and when meetings are being held, etc — and also to help promote openSUSE to the rest of the world, so everyone has a chance to experience Linux. I've spoken with a number of people in the past few months who have expressed an interest in being part of a marketing team, so here's your chance to get involved! I blogged about the marketing team a few days ago, and several openSUSE contributors have already started signing up. This is a particularly good opportunity for non-developers who want to find a way to contribute to openSUSE. If you can write, have artistic skills, want to create and/or deliver presentations, staff a booth, or have a knack for organizing, we'd love to have you on the team. I'd like to start off with a discussion on the newly minted mailing list (thanks, Henne!) and then find a suitable time to hold meetings on IRC to get coordinated. The openSUSE Project has released the first release candidate of the openSUSE Build Service 1.0. With the release candidate, all the features are now in place to support external collaboration with the community to build openSUSE in the open. Developers can now submit contributions to openSUSE directly at build.opensuse.org/. The openSUSE Build Service has offered a simple collaboration system since its inception for groups to work closely together on packages or solutions stacks. The 1.0 RC 1 release improves on existing functionality to allow the Build Service to scale to larger projects like openSUSE's Factory distribution. What the changes mean for contributors: * Anyone can find a package's working copy as maintained by the official packager or packaging team. Contributors can submit changes against the working copy. * The submission handling and notification system has been put in place, allowing any contributor to request a merge of their changes to a project. * Quality assurance happens before contributions are merged. Test builds of a suggested change are accessible to anyone. * Improved branch handling. It is easy to set up a branch of a package. The branch will build in the same way as the original package, but can be modified. * Source handling is improved in 1.0. It's now possible to easily maintain a branch, and modifications are stored without creating a full copy. This makes it easier to maintain features based on the latest copy of package. The Build Service builds the latest packages, including modifications, automatically. The majority of this functionality is implemented on the server side. The rest can be implemented by the various Build Service clients, so that contributors can take advantage of the new features. The Build Service team has also introduced a number of smaller improvements and bugfixes to make the system more scalable and usable. The openSUSE Build Service is now considered "feature complete" for collaboration, but the team is expecting a lot of user feedback since this now is our standard tool for working on the distribution. Hi all, we proudly announce the launch of forums.opensuse.org, a merger of the openSUSE Novell support forums, suseforums.net, and suselinuxsupport.de - the three largest English-language dedicated support forums for openSUSE. The merged forums at forums.opensuse.org will provide a single forum for the openSUSE community to find support and discuss openSUSE. The forums hosted at forums.opensuse.org are available immediately. Users with an openSUSE account for the wiki, bugzilla, and other services wil be able to use their existing username for the forums. Users of suseforums.net and suselinuxsupport.de will be able to create new accounts on forums.opensuse.org.
