[opensuse-project] Mission statement for openSUSE
Hi, Within the framework of the new web design of *.opensuse.org, we are also discussing the mission statement for the openSUSE project and we would love to receive your input. A mission statement - a clear and succinct representation of openSUSE project, a so called "one-liner" e.g. * openSUSE - Built to fit! * openSUSE - Have a lot of fun! * openSUSE - Caffeine for your machine! * The openSUSE project - A real alternative! * openSUSE - It's a wild thing! * openSUSE - An unlimited alternative! * openSUSE - The adaptable and innovative solution! It should be included/supported by a set of our values such as open, leading edge distribution, fits everywhere, best of open source, innovative, user-friendly, comprehensive, etc. We will select the best three mission statements for further discussion and finally reward the best input with a 50cm stuffed Tux. We are looking forward to your ideas. Over 95% of the market views Mac as the /only/ alternative to The Company From Redmond, if they bother to think about it at all. Linux does not even appear on their radar screens. The target is that share of the market that is being influenced by the current set of Mac ads. If you do not catch their attention, Linux goes nowhere. Realistically, Windows is not even the proper thing to compete against right now. I'd like to see an ad something like the following: PC dude walks out in a penguin suit. Mac dude looks shocked, fear spreads across his face as he cries, "Oh no, not again!" PC dude kicks the sh** out of Mac dude. All these may be nice slogans, but do these slogans qualify as mission statements? Anything that is just a statement of facts (true or wrong) does not tell much about the why of our daily work. A mission statement could hint at a goal and may also call for action to achive such goal. It should not give cause for doubt. Superlatives like 'everybody, 'world's most usable' cause me to frown. Your 'Just works' lead me to this one: openSUSE - make the machine work. Oh well, so much for my theory. I still favour 'openSUSE is good for you', but cannot tell why. I agree. I don't think it attracts the attention. I prefer something which tells me _why_ openSUSE is good for me, even if it doesn't give me a complete description of the product, which is not the goal of a slogan anyway. I agree on accuracy, not on honesty. But, of course, it's a question of choice and of the kind of connection you want to have with users. Think to the Novell slogan: Your linux is ready! Are you? Does it attract the attention? Yes. Is it convincing? No. Why? Because it's not true. Together with the comparison with Vista, it's just full of hype, and users can perceive it immediately. And you loose of credibility. The old, definitely more honest, SuSE - Simply change worked (and might still work) a lot better, just to cite an example. Perhaps it's high time that the Linux distro communities acknowledge that there are many distro's attempting to enter the enterprise market -- so perhaps it's time to start looking at how one distro can differentiate itself from "the pack" and start highlighting what it has that the others don't. Maybe even have that key differentiating point or feature highlighted in the mission statements and advertising. For one, the blatantly obvious for SUSE is that it now has the company and (supposedly?) the expertise of the people that put the NetWare NOS and other groundbreaking Novell products that changed enterprise computing (ZENworks, NDS, e.t.c..) into the marketplace. Looking in examples, and demand for a one-liner it was created page: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Slogan that is fastest growing page since I know. I wish that so many contributions we can see for other content. I'm used to people that use foreign language, and in case of some discrepancies between word and examples, I trust example. In this case there was no complains, so it seems that example told us what was asked.

To be honest I think the ones selected are pretty poor. Needless to say there were many spectacularly bad ones in the proposal ;-), but I'm not sure why these were picked. The current winner -- "Linux for open minds" -- really doesn't add anything much new to openSUSE as a Linux flavour, as Linux is open. It only really makes sense if you're coming from SLE or something. Why was the old quasi-motto -- 'The world's most usable Linux' -- not in the running? New users care about whether they're going to be able to actually use it, since thinking of trying it out for the first time can be daunting for some users. If that isn't our motto, I think it should definitely be something similar. Someone new to Linux won't make much of a motto that talks about openess, really, and if they do, it's because they already know that Linux is about free software/open source. I support Francis. I wonder what the criteria for the selection was. Imho the mission statement/slogan should at least: * Speak to Windows and GNU/Linux users alike * Say something about what openSUSE is and what sets it apart from other distros. Of the 10 proposals on election only "Linux at it's best" comes close to living up to these simple criteria. Most of the others would be true for any Linux distro, and say nothing about openSUSE's unique qualities. Many of the discarded proposals did on the other hand, for example: Powerful technology togehter The Heart of Linux Innovation The world's most usable Linux Just to list a few random examples that actually say something about what makes SUSE different from the other ~500-1000 distros. Maybe I'm just slow-witted. OK, I think I have come up with one direction for a slogan which is also a one line mission statement: openSUSE: working better together with you "working better together" implies both improved integration of the distribution (which goes back to 1993) and improved collaboration in its construction (which dates to the creation of openSUSE). It also implies interoperability, which Novell has recently emphasised. "together with you" includes collaboration as a developer, as a packager, as a tester, as an end user. And it brings "you" into the mission. As a bonus, I could not find the particular phase "working better together with you" anywhere on the web. Hey Rajko, But it is still missing one vital thing -- the statement doesn't differentiate openSUSE directly from the other Linux distributions out there at all. We could say "openSUSE - it is very nice" as well, and that sounds pleasant, but it's not saying anything about us. Linux is open source, it's a community too, etc.There's nothing obvious to me about why Mandriva, Fedora, MEPIS etc also aren't for open minds. I like the last two Martin mentioned because two things that I think really set openSUSE apart are (i) the extent of innovation in and around out (unparalleled in other distributions), and (ii) I genuinely believe it's the the _most_ usable distribution out there, despite what others are saying. Either of those mottos I think would be nice for us, but 'usableness' hits a wider audience than innovation, I'd say; this 'usableness' is an incredible achievement, we should flaunt it. :) Nevertheless I think the criteria as mentioned by Martin above also hits the pin on the head in this case. I'm personally not 100% pleased with "usable", to me that's almost synonymous with "dumbed down". And it creates the impression that openSUSE is only about making things simple for aunt Tillie. When in reality openSUSE is extremely powerful. Our strength is the very high technological level - combined with being fairly easy to use, _without_ being dumbed down, hiding options and making all choices for the user. We should emphasize that. The problem is that Sabine used expression "mission statement" that wasn't good description of examples. Examples where slogan (motto) and, after Magnus Boman mentioned idea to use wiki, I created "openSUSE:Slogan" page. Sabine didn't complain on that, so we can take that marketing looked for a slogan and further discussion revolving around "mission statement" is not applicable. The slogan is not self introduction, it is few words that sound good. Take all the best slogans that you have ever seen, what they have with self introduction, IMHO in most cases nothing. When is the deadline? Thursday at midnight CET? Friday midnight? Maybe some of the people who have already voted, should consider taking advantage of the possibility to alter their vote. In case your favourite is already "out of the running", and the current leader ("Linux for open minds") is not your #2 choice , you could influence the outcome by moving your vote to something that has a chance of winning, and is better than the current leader.
