SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha 2 is ready for testing. New significant changes in 10.1 Alpha 2 since Alpha 1: * New experimental libfontconfig It contains bug which is causing segmentation faults in all KDE and Gnome applications after update/installation. You need to workaround this by calling "fc-cache -f" as root. (#128080) * APT successor SMART is provided in the smart rpm package. It can be used like apt-get using apt or YUM package repositories (all inst-source directories contain YUM meta data) * Update to KDE 3.5 Beta 2 * Update to Gnome 2.11.1 * Update to OpenOffice.org 2.0 RC 3 Note: Alpha 2 will be followed by Alpha 3 in four weeks, Alpha 2 is not supported and we advice to not use it on production systems. It has only gone through minimal testing on our side. Roadmap: Changed Dates for 10.1 Alphas

Since I announced the roadmap a few weeks ago on the list, I thought it would be good to announce a change of it as well ;-) We've moved the 10.1 Alpha release one week earlier so that the new dates are as follows: Oct 20, 2005: SUSE Linux 10.1 OSS alpha2 release. Nov 17, 2005: SUSE Linux 10.1 OSS alpha3 release. Dec 15, 2005: SUSE Linux 10.1 OSS alpha4 release. SUSE Linux 10.0 Final

I'm glad to announce the final version (aka the Goldmaster) of SUSE Linux 10.0. Developing 10.0 as part of the openSUSE project with an open bugzilla was a new and great experience. Thanks a lot to everybody that contributed in testing, reporting and fixing bugs, discussions etc. We've created the following flavors of SUSE Linux versions and installable trees: * 10.0-OSS - the Open Source (OSS) version (available from ftp.opensuse.org and its mirrors): - i386 (Intel 32-bit, AMD 32-bit x86), x86_64 (AMD64, Intel EM64T) and ppc (PowerPC) architectures - 5 CDs for each architecture - experimental jigdo files to create i386 CDs and DVDs from the ftp trees - delta-ISOs from RC1 to the final version * 10.0 - the retail and Eval versions including some non-OSS software (available from ftp.suse.com and its mirrors): - i386, x86_64 architecture - 5 CDs i386 - one i386 DVD with the contents of these 5 i386 CDs - one x86_64 DVD with the same packages as the i386 DVD - a LiveDVD for i386 * Multi-arch ftp trees that can be used as YaST repositories and come with debuginfo and source RPMs: - inst-source: the OSS install tree (on ftp.opensuse.org) - inst-source-java: the install tree for Java packages including Sun Java (on ftp.opensuse.org) - inst-source-extra: same non-OSS packages (on ftp.suse.com) The mirrors are still downloading all the files and it will take a few days until all are synced. defaced wiki on www.opensuse.org

Dear openSUSE community, For 45 minutes on October 1st, the openSUSE website was defaced by an Internet attacker. The attacker exploited a vulnerability with a blogging application that was running on the same server as the www.openSUSE.org home page. The servers were taken offline when the attack was detected and were replaced with new servers so that the attack could be studied in more detail by our forensics team. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused while bringing the new servers on line. Our distribution, SUSE Linux, the SUSE Linux build system or any other services below the opensuse.org domain were not exposed to attack at any time. The wiki was the only openSUSE service that was compromised. We have restored the wiki and are back to business as usual. SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha1 Codename "Auckland" is ready for testing. New significant changes in 10.1 Alpha1 since 10.0: * Update to KDE 3.5 Beta1 * Update to openldap 2.3.7 * Update to Linux 2.6.13.2 kernel * YaST does not install the bootloader in the MBR * We use ifplugd by default for network interfaces * a number of package updates and package fixes to reduce compile warnings (especially about missing declarations and aliasing) * Update of pilot-link packages - currently these are broken: GNOME installation: Do not install multisync-ldap, multisync-palm KDE installation: Do not install kdebluetooth, kdepim3-kpilot, kdepim3-sync, taskjuggler, taskjuggler-kde, kdepim3 - note this means you miss kontact! Some of the known issues: * The distribution identifies itself as "10.0.42 Alpha1" - and has in quite a lot places the 10.0 branding, including the 10.0 release notes. This is a known feature;-) * kdepim3 cannot get installed. We've put on the mirror besides the ISOs a kdepim directory * Internet test will not work since downloading to patches is not setup. Roadmap Announcement

I'd like to share the following information regarding our roadmap with you before I take off for the weekend ;-). First let me introduce myself: I'm responsible as project manager for the engineering side of SUSE Linux. SUSE Linux 10.1 Roadmap ======================= We've added the following SUSE Linux 10.1 milestones to the openSUSE roadmap (http://www.opensuse.org/Roadmap): 2005-09-29: SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha1 2005-10-27: SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha2 2005-11-24: SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha3 2005-12-22: SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha4 2006-01-19: SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta1 2006-01-26: SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta2 2006-02-02: SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta3 2006-02-09: SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta4 2006-02-16: SUSE Linux 10.1 RC1 For the Alpha phase of the project we will release a full release that has gone through *some* internal testing approximately every four weeks. Then, just as we did with SUSE Linux 10.0, we will release builds weekely during the beta phase. For the near future we plan to provide regular syncs of RPMs directly out of our buildsystem (without any testing). SUSE Linux 10.1 Features ======================== Next week I'll start looking closely at the feature wishlist (http://www.opensuse.org/Feature_Wishlist) and the various package wishlists (http://www.opensuse.org/Package_Wishlist). I'd like then to start a discussion with you on these topics and let's see what we can do together. New Packages for SUSE Linux =========================== For the SUSE Linux 10.1 release, we hope to be able to integrate some of the packages and features that have been requested on the wishlists into SUSE Linux. We will, however, focus our resources on our next-generation build infrastructure which will allow more direct participation for every interested packager and developer in the openSUSE project. Expect a first version of the new build server early in 2006 If you want to build packages for openSUSE now, consider contributing to the existing packaging initiatives. One development goal for SUSE Linux 10.1 is improving YaST to better integrate those existing package repositories. SUSE Linux 10.0 Status ======================== Congratulations! We have finished development of SUSE Linux 10.0! My personal thanks go out to all of you who participated and contributed to the creation of SUSE Linux 10.0. This week we have released the final ISO images to our internal testing/verification/manufacturing process - that process takes a little time. The final "approved ISOs" will be uploaded and released to you on the 6th of October. We will be releasing CD images of SUSE Linux 10.0 OSS and a DVD Eval of SUSE Linux 10.0 (I'll document these media on the wiki later).
