Hi, With todays release of "pam_ldap" we discontinue the security support for SUSE Linux 9.2. For the discontinuation schedule of our SUSE Linux products, please have a look at http://en.opensuse.org/SUSE_Linux_Lifetime The next discontinued SUSE Linux version will be SUSE Linux 9.3, around end of April 2007. SUSE Linux 9.2 was released in begin of October 2004. It was the first release featuring Delta RPMs, making downloads of patches even smaller than with the Patch RPMs we used before. The difference in "Recommended" patches is mostly due to the previous SUSE Linux 9.1 being the base of SLES 9 and also the first release with Linux 2.6 kernel and so getting more bugfixes. I'm glad to announce the first beta of openSUSE 10.2 codename Basilisk Lizard for PowerPC. Our developers fixed bug #213873 which made installation on PowerPC impossible and we've mastered media for PowerPC now as well. Note that the factory tree still has an old broken installation images and will only be updated with the next sync, please install from CDs or DVD. openSUSE 10.2 Beta1 contains a large number of enhancements and updates done by the open source community and Novell's development teams. I'd like to point out especially the following significant changes From our list of updates of all open source subcomponents, integration of new subcomponents and improvements in various areas: - Linux Kernel 2.6.18.1 - glibc 2.5 - Firefox 2.0 - GNOME 2.16.1 - KDE 3.5.5 - X11 R7.2 RC - both KDE and GNOME feature improved start menus compared to upstream - improved desktop effects (compiz 0.2) - OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 - Koffice 1.6 - gnucash 2.0.2 - ekiga 2.0.2 VoIP and video conferencing application - python 2.5 - php 5.2 RC - cups 1.2.4 - wink 1.5 software tutorial and presentation creatiation software - Using opensync instead of multisync for much better syncing between mobile devices and software. - numerous improvements to our package manager stack, including a new update notification applet (opensuse-updater) and a console application called zypper which are non-zmd based. We're happy to announce that we have put out now the complete remastered version of SUSE Linux 10.1 (including DVD but no LiveDVD or ftp installation source), which includes all patches for SUSE Linux 10.1 released till October 9. It replaces the original ISOs on our mirrors. This version will ease the issues users had with the goldmaster version and should make the installing and working experience much smoother for everyone. The files have a "Remastered" in their name and a symbolic link from the old name to them so that references will continue to work. If you are running SUSE Linux 10.1 already, there is no need to download these images at all. Just do an update from our update repository to get all our security updates. This remastered media are usefull for new installations. I'm happy to announce the availability of SUSE Linux 10.1 "remastered". This release combines the 10.1 GM and all online updates that we have released for 10.1 so far, including libzypp, which should make the installing and working experience much smoother for everyone. We have created new CD ISO images and supplied delta ISOs from the goldmaster. The non-OSS DVD images will show up next week, we had to retract and will remaster. The ftp installation tree remains unchanged. The files have a "Remastered" in their name and a symbolic link from the old name to them so that references will continue to work. If you are running SUSE Linux 10.1 already, there is no need to download these images at all. Just do an update from our update repository to get all our security updates. This remastered media are usefull for new installations. Our Basilisk Lizard has shown this week its other side and I'd like to thank especially Jürgen, Lars, Christoph, Steffen, Jiri, Ladislav for taming the lizard. Fights come with a prize to pay - ours are two-fold: The PowerPC distribution and the CD installation. We only have DVDs for i386 and x86-64 this time. They are available via ftp.opensuse.org and its mirrors. Mini-ISOs for remote installation are available as well. So, there are neither CDs nor deltas. (fixed powersave package should be in factory by monday, until then you can edit /etc/suspend.conf and put your resume device from the resume=... boot parameter there. However, the fixed package is better). * The x86-64 uses nearly double the disk space for installed packages than usual. It looks like a bug in binutils stripping the binaries Bug #210331 * Instead of /dev/hd for IDE disks using Intel ICHx chipsets the libata interfaces are used and disks show up as /dev/sd Bug #210478 * zen-updater always shows patterns to update Bug #198379 * It's not possible to start applications via kdesu, eg yast2. Workaround: use "su" in a shell. Bug #208272 * The bootloader configuration on BIOS-based RAID (so-called FakeRAID) systems fails. BUG #208076 * gnome-screensaver does not accept the correct password. Bug #204364 * Workaround: Kill the gnome-screensaver process. This is the last external Alpha, we will deliver in three weeks our first Beta of openSUSE 10.2. I'm glad to announce the fourth alpha release of our openSUSE 10.2 distribution. The codename of openSUSE 10.2 is "Basilisk Lizard". With the rename of the distribution from SUSE Linux to openSUSE, we renamed also the name in bugzilla.novell.com so that you have to report bugs against "openSUSE 10.2". Compared with Alpha4, we've made a number of significant changes: * We switched to kernel 2.6.18rc5 - and use only SMP kernel, the default kernel is smp, the kernel-smp is now dropped. Now all kernel module packages (kmp) and the Xen packages have been adopted for the new kernel. * KDE now uses the new kickoff menu. * We switched to GNOME 2.16 Beta (2.15.92) and have now all packages in. * The new branding "openSUSE" should be shown in all places. Any SUSE Linux 10.1 branding is worth a bug report. * Finished integration of X11 R7.1. * Further refinement of patterns used in the package manager for grouping of software. Please look at them and discuss the contents on the opensuse-factory mailing list. * Start of removal of unneeded SuSEconfig scripts * No reboot after CD1, displaying of the slideshow during all media * YaST runs during installation in a window (the background is blue, this will change to a nice wallpaper) * Update of sysfsutils to 2.1.0, dbus to 0.92. * integration of new tool pam-config and fixes to pam configuration. * Further work on package management: Support for patch and delta RPMs in YaST online update (not yet in zmd), refactoring and improving of code. * Option to install JFS in YaST again - as experimental, unsupported filesystem. All these changes needed changes by other packages, so a lot of other packages have been fixed to build again (and updated), and a few still need updating. All changes are shown on CD1 in the file ChangeLog. Alphas of openSUSE are rather untested and more for the experimental folks. I do not suggest to use it in production. But I do consider especially Alpha4 an important milestone for development and testing and use it on my own Laptop. I'm glad to announce the third alpha release of our 10.2 product. It's the first time that we're call our distribution "openSUSE" instead of "SUSE Linux". The codename of openSUSE 10.2 is "Basilisk Lizard". With the rename of the distribution, we renamed also the name in bugzilla.novell.com so that you have to report bugs against "openSUSE 10.2". Compared with Alpha2, we've made a number of significant changes: * We switched to kernel 2.6.18rc4 - and neither all kernel module packages (kmp) nor the Xen packages have been adopted for the new kernel. * openSUSE 10.2 contains KDE 3.5.4 * We started the switch to GNOME 2.16 Beta and have now the base packages in, more to come later for Alpha4. * The new branding "openSUSE" is shown in the first places but there's still some existing SUSE Linux 10.1 branding. * X11 R7.1 with different pathes (no more /usr/X11R6 for the xorg packages): Users with a working X11 configuration will not see many real changes. First, the pathes have changed, so most applications that lived in /usr/X11R6/bin now exist in /usr/bin. So, hard coded paths need to be changed. The X11 Release 7 is fully modularized. This is reflected in our packaging as it enables us to provide updates for individual components like drivers and libraries once they become available independently of the release cycle of the X Window System. As with every major update, a lot of bugs have been fixed in all areas. The changed pathes broke building of packages, so developers might need to change their software. * cups 1.2.2: This is a major update (from version 1.1.x), the highlights are IPv6 support, network printer discovery (CUPS can now find printers on the LAN using SNMP) and LDAP support. A cool feature are unique job ids: CUPS maintains a new job-uuid attribute which provides a unique identifier that can be used to track a job on your network or anywhere in the world * Updated development tools like gettext 0.15 and autoconf 2.60. * We now have a gcc package and a gcc41 package in such a way that in the future a gcc42 package might be available as well, giving you the chance to use different gcc versions at the same time. * Using patterns instead of selections in the package manager (think of patterns as package groups with some semantics). We have currently only a basic set of patterns and will enhance them. All these changes needed changes by other packages, so a lot of other packages have been fixed to build again (and updated), and some still need updating. Alphas of openSUSE are rather untested and more for the experimental folks. I do not suggest to use it in production. But I do consider especially Alpha3 an important milestone for development and testing. Note: I could run X11 nevertheless and logged into both KDE and GNOME. * zen-updater always shows patterns to update Bug #198379 * f-spot does not work Bug #198377 * gnome-wm does not handle X11R7 Bug #198380 * Firefox does not start Bug #197928 * Registration fails with an internal server error Bug #198381 * applications using python-gtk are broken, e.g. smart-gui Bug #198391 * kde su does not accept correct password Bug #198408 * Most kernel module packages are not build against the new 2.6.18rc4 kernel. Introducing the new mailinglist server

Hi there, now that we switched to the new mailinglist server i would like to tell you about the changes it brings with it. The old mailinglist software was ezmlm. The new mailinglist software is mlmmj. 1. Adresses ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1.1 Command Delimiter --------------------- In general all addresses you are used to will still work. The new server accepts - as well as + as delimiter between the listname and the command. So <listname>-<command> will still work. But please start to use the + because i will drop the - in the future. 1.2 subscription ---------------- Mailinglist subscription works with the following address: * <listname>+subscribe(a)opensuse.org the old syntax of <listname>-subscribe-<subscription-address>@opensuse.org doe _NOT_ work anymore. This is due the changes of subscriber identification from the 'Return-Path' header to the 'From' header. If you want to subscribe another address change the 'From' header in your mailer. 1.3 subscription to the nomail version of a list ------------------------------------------------ The nomail version of a list means that you are reccognized as a subscriber, but will not get any messages from the list. This is useful when it's necessary to post from several emailaddresses to a subscribers only list or if you read mails from the list elsewhere (gmane). Subscription works with the following address: * <listname>+subscribe-nomail(a)opensuse.org 1.4 subscription to the digest version of a list ------------------------------------------------ A Mailing List Digest combines multiple messages posted to a mailing list in to a single message. Digests are usually sent once a day and serve to reduce the number of emails received from a particular mailing list. Subscription works with the following address: * <listname>+subscribe-digest(a)opensuse.org Digest are turned off for all existing lists so you cant subscribe to them. In the future we might have lists with digests. 1.5 unsubscription ------------------ All the addresses above work also for unsubscription. Just replace subscribe with unsubscribe in them. 1.6 retrieval of messages from the archive ------------------------------------------ For retrieval of message number N in the archive send a message to the following address: * <listname>+get-N(a)opensuse.org 1.7 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ------------------------------------ For a collection of frequently asked questions about this list send a message to: * <listname>+faq(a)opensuse.org 1.8 Talk to the lists owner --------------------------- To contact the list owner, send a message to: * <listname>+owner(a)opensuse.org 1.9 Reply-To munging -------------------- We do not "munge" the mail headers by inserting a "Reply-To: <listname>@opensuse.org" anymore because it makes it more difficult subscribers to handle the mail the way they want to. Your mail client probably has a "reply" function as well as a "reply to all" or "reply to list" one; Please use the latter if you want you message to go to the list and not just to the original poster. 1.10 Dropped commands --------------------- The following is a list of ezmlm commands we wont support anymore: * <listname>-archive(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-info(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-request(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-edit(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-index(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-thread(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-query(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-log(a)opensuse.org If you desperately need some them please get in contact with me. 2. Webarchive ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The webarchive is totally redesigned to match the wiki design and has a couple of new features. 2.1 Mailbox files for download ------------------------------ Each list is available as mbox file split into months. So if you unsusbcribe because you go on vacation or whatever there is now an easy way to get mails from the archive. Just download the mbox file and import it into your mailer. 2.2 Web-Search -------------- The web-archives now support searching. The index generation is happening * for all lists every sunday at 03:00 (GMT) * for the individual lists every 5 minutes This is all for now. Hi, today (i dont know the exact time yet) i will transfer the rest of the opensuse mailinglists to the new mailinglist server. Bear with me please :) I expect some problems with posting for a minority of subscribers because of the different approach to subscriber identification. To identify subscribers the old mailinglist server took the address in the "Return-Path" of the Mail. The new mailinglist server takes the address in the "From" header. SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 1 is available It has one major problem, but it is highly usable apart from that. * The installation using the GUI interface does not work, please select "Text Mode" when booting from CD media (#183827) * download of release notes does fail (server side issue) The difference to SL 10.1 is mainly in version updates in some areas (esp. the YaST package manager and KDE). Important SUSE Linux 10.1 update

From today on we provide an important patch for the package management. It contains various bug fixes and performance improvements for YaST and Zen updater. We recommend to install this patch with YaST Online Update (YOU). For that please start YaST manually through the menu and use the 'Online Update' module. This version still lacks patch rpm support which will be delivered with an upcoming update. We regret any inconvenience you experienced so far. openSUSE build service becomes productive ...

The build service is still in its alpha phase, but we will use it for producing our supplementarry updates from now on. This means the build service does create already packages for daily usage. Interesting projects which get build there currently are * KDE:KDE3 (contains already KDE 3.5.3 and Qt 3.3.6) * KDE:Backports (contains updated KDE apps without the need to update also the complete KDE (big advantage compared to supplementarry)) * OSCAR cluster software * Various groupware software (Kolab, OX, eGroupWare) * Apache + php * Kernel * the openSUSE:Tool chain This means that the supplementarry dirs for KDE and misc got moved from ftp.suse.com to the build service. Gnome will follow. SUSE Linux 10.1 Release

Hi all, After lot of work and several delays, we proudly announce the availability of SUSE Linux 10.1. In tribute to 42 and as today is the fifth anniversary of the death of Douglas Adams, we dedicate this release to him. It can be downloaded as described below and on http://download.openSUSE.org in x86, x86-64, and ppc versions - both via ftp from our mirrors and bittorrent. We'd appreciate if you use bittorrent to share the download with others. Initially we offer as ISOs the 5 CD open source version plus our add-on CD with proprietary portions, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, RealNetworks RealPlayer, and Sun Java Runtime Environment. DVDs will be available for download from Thursday, May 18. Additionally two ftp trees are available - one with only open source packages and one with non open source packages. The open source tree contains packages build from more than 3100 source RPMs. As usual, we ship all the latest open source packages available at the time. But we want to give special mention to Xgl for 3D acceleration on the desktop (http://www.opensuse.org/xgl) NetworkManager for getting painless wifi access everywhere, the completely open source AppArmor 2.0, and the full integration of XEN 3 in YaST. SUSE Linux 10.1 is Done

We mastered wednesday RC4, fixed bugs and then mastered RC5 and declared that last night as goldmaster (= final version). We only did a limited set of media for now and will do the final sets, all the delta ISOs (both from RC1 and RC3), and a proper frozen ftp tree on monday and distribute it to the mirrors so that we can announce and release this version next thursday (12th of May). Thanks a lot for all your testing, bug reporting, comments and encouragement through this especially long beta and release phase of SUSE Linux 10.1. I've heard early quite some critizisms but also in the end a lot of people saying that 10.1 is now a great release - and I would like to thank you for your part in making it great! The openSUSE project and SGI do provide a SUSE Linux Factory tree for IPF / Itanium hardware architecture. The Factory distribution is an always up to date version of the SUSE Linux development distribution, which is used as base for SUSE Linux Enterprise products. LinuxTag 2006 is presented in cooperation with the German Unix Users Group (GUUG) on May 3-6, 2006, in the Rhein-Main-Hallen, Wiesbaden. The openSUSE project will be present at the Novell booth (Booth Number 918) in the general exhibition area. On that booth there will be a openSUSE and a SUSE Linux counter.
