[opensuse-announce] Blast the bugs out of YaST on April 25: Operation YaST Smash

The openSUSE Project is going Bug Smashing[1] on April 25, and we want you to join us! We're looking for openSUSE users and contributors who have some time to help triage YaST bugs and clean up Bugzilla. Join us on #openSUSE-Factory from 09:00 to 20:00 CEST. We'll be going through the Bugzilla and reviewing YaST bugs to see which bugs are still valid, gathering information about existing bugs, and generally paring down the bug count to help developers focus on the most crucial problems. Anyone can participate -- you don't have to be a developer or power user to join in, just point your browser at the openSUSE Bugzilla[2], log in (be sure to create an account if you don't have one already) and start searching for bugs against YaST. Help verify bugs that are in Bugzilla, and help close bugs that have already been fixed. Our goal for Friday is to get the YaST bug count in Bugzilla down and clear the field for YaST developers to concentrate on real bugs that need to be smashed for the openSUSE 11.0 release. You can see the current open bugs here[2]. Why do we do Bug Smashing days? We want to do a couple of things. First, we want to help to train new contributors who haven't done bug reporting and triage before. By holding a Bug Smashing Day we can be ready to answer questions and provide support for new bug smashers in real time. Second, we want to focus our attention on a specific application or feature. In this case, we want to focus on YaST and help clean up the bug database so the YaST team can concentrate on the real problems. What do you need to participate? Just a Bugzilla account, a system with a relevant release of openSUSE, and be signed in to #openSUSE-Factory on Freenode. Can't participate in the Bug Smashing days? No problem. [opensuse-announce] openSUSE Project Releases Major Update to openSUSE Build Service

Nuremberg, Germany -- April 16, 2007 The openSUSE team is proud to announce another major release of the openSUSE Build Service (OBS). This release brings a new level to OBS scalability by adding the ability for OBS instances to interact. The 0.9 release will help grow a world-wide network of build service instances. OBS instances can automatically interact with each other and reuse projects residing on other OBS instances. New installations of OBS are automatically configured to work with the main openSUSE Build Service, which makes it easy to set up new instances and minimize network traffic while keeping data in sync automatically. Developers now have the ability to build all packages from the openSUSE Factory (development) distribution. The 0.9 release also adds the ability to automatically create multilib packages using baselib for processor architectures that support 32- and 64-bit binaries. Another important feature in order to get a complete distribution development system is the image generation support. OBS can now create images based on KIWI configurations automatically, which will allow projects and developers to create installable images from packages stored in a Build Service instance. Furthermore, this release adds Qemu support, which frees developers from the need to have hardware for every platform they wish to build packages for. Using Qemu, developers can target any hardware platform supported by Qemu (x86, x86_64, SPARC, MIPS, PowerPC, and m68k). To help developers improve quality of packages, the Build Service now supports automated tests using rpmlint after a build is finished. The OBS team has also made significant progress in the area of submission requests. This is an important step towards the 1.0 release, which will allow developers to contribute directly to any project -- including the openSUSE distribution itself -- without requiring manual patch creation and submission via Bugzilla. This should greatly enhance the community's ability to collaborate with Novell developers in working on the openSUSE distribution. Developers can already request submissions to other projects, and accept or decline submissions from others. However, OBS will not support submissions to openSUSE distributions before the release of 1.0. The 0.9 release is available as source or prebuilt as an RPM, and is also now running on the servers at build.opensuse.org. Due to storage space limitations, imaging support is only enabled on request for projects. Dear opensuse-announce subscribers and SUSE Linux users, SUSE Security announces that SUSE Linux 10.1 will be discontinued soon. Having provided security-relevant fixes for more than two years, vulnerabilities found in SUSE Linux 10.1 after May 15th 2008 will not be fixed any more for this product. We expect to release the last updates around May 30th 2008. Please do not confuse SUSE Linux 10.1 with the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 family of products, these are different products and follow different policies. As a consequence, the SUSE Linux 10.1 distribution directory on our ftp server ftp.suse.com will be moved from /pub/suse/10.1/ to the /pub/suse/discontinued/ directory tree structure to free space on our mirror sites. The 10.1 directory in the update tree /pub/suse/update/10.1 will follow, as soon as all updates have been published. The discontinuation of SUSE Linux 10.1 enables us to focus on the SUSE Linux and openSUSE distributions of a newer release dates to ensure that our users can continuously take advantage of the quality that they are used to with SUSE Linux products. This announcement holds true for SUSE Linux 10.1 only. As usual, SUSE will continue to provide update packages for the following products: openSUSE 10.2 openSUSE 10.3 and openSUSE 11.0 (currently in development) for a two-year period after the release of the respective distribution. Please note that the maintenance cycles of SUSE Linux Enterprise products and products based on the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system are not affected by this announcement and have longer life cycles. The openSUSE team proudly announces the availability of openSUSE 4.1. We're shipping all the latest open source packages that are available at time of launch. As highlights, we'd like to point out the latest desktops, GNOME 4.1 and KDE 4.1 plus KDE 4.2 preview, our MP41 support via gstreamer plug-in by Fluendo, a faster boot process, heavily optimised and improved package management, 1-click install option for additional software, OpenOffice 4.1, XEN 4.1 and VirtualBox 4.1 and, last but not least, our 4 in 1 CD installation which provides a small but fully loaded desktop. For all the news and impressive screenshots, have a look at http://news.opensuse.org/?p=412008 It's available now to download at http://software.openSUSE.org in Amstrad, Commodore, Kaypro and TRS-80 versions - from our mirrors and via bittorrent. The following ISOs can be downloaded: the 1 CD open source version with an add-on CD containing proprietary software, such as iTunes, World of Warcraft, and Microsoft Office for Linux. DVD ISOs for all architectures are available and contain the open source version plus proprietary add-ons. An installable Live CD will be released in October, and the Edu add-on CD http://en.opensuse.org/Education will show up in the same time frame. As usual, openSUSE 4.1 will be available in European retail channels as a boxed product Of course, there it will be known as openSUSE 1.4. All software versions contained will follow. I'd like to share the following news by Zonker also here: I'm happy to announce that the openSUSE Project has been accepted to Google’s Summer of Code 2008! Now the real fun begins! We’re now in the “interim period” for students to discuss application ideas with mentoring organizations. (That’d be us.) Students will then have from March 24th through March 31st to apply to Google. Hi another event mail ... Some of the openSUSE team will be at CeBIT 2008, the world biggest computer exhibition (i hope it's still true). We will be on the Novell booth, this time Hall 2 with 2 Demopoints. This is another chance to meet some openSUSE guys, but also to learn more about what else Novell is doing, there are lot of interesting presentations every day. We also have openSUSE presentations on Saturday and Sunday, both at the Novell booth and in the Linuxpark (Hall 5). So if you are in Hannover next week, don't miss openSUSE! Hi Another week, another event :-) Because it's in Germany i will switch to german now ... short: very nice event in Chemnitz :-) Wir werden wieder auf den Chemnitzer Linux-Tagen sein, und würden uns natürlich freuen wenn viele openSUSE fans kommen würden. Wer am Stand mithelfen möchte bekommt wie immer ein openSUSE T-Shirt. Bitte rechtzeitig melden, first come - first serve. Was wird geboten: - Stand mit openSUSE 10.3 (Beineri, Tom und /me). Hello! I just did a quick bugzilla query of all unassigned GNOME bug reports and found 270 of them. Some of these reports are very old, and some are new, but instinct tells me that unless someone keeps going through these reports over and over, they might fall between the chairs. I'd like to suggest that we all have a look at http://tinyurl.com/2c8ksy and assign bugs as appropriate. By having all bugs assigned, at least we have someone in charge. To find out who could be assigned to certain bugs, have a look at http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Directory. I would hope that if someone gets a bug assigned to them and it's not their cup of tea, they might be able to figure out who the proper person would be, or simply assign it back to bnc-team-gnome(a)forge.provo.novell.com. If someone objects to this, please let me know.
