On the opensuse-packaging mailing list, we've recently formed a team that will take care of the packaging guidelines and introduced a small process to change them: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_guidelines_change_process As part of that process, we're announcing regularly the changes to the packaging guidelines. Since this is a first such announcement, it is not a complete change but just points out a few things from the past few months. In the future, we will send out this email once a month. List of changes =============== 1) New Lua Guidelines 2) Reworked font guidelines 3) Documenting changes in packages 4) Teams involved, contact Details ======= 1) New Lua Guidelines We now have guidelines for lua: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_Lua. 2) Reworked font guidelines The packaging of fonts has been completely changed, and is documented at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_Fonts 3) Documenting changes in packages The openSUSE review team is now also enforcing proper documenting changes in packages: First, the .changes entry (rpm changelog) surves two purposes: - News for the user - History tracking of packaging changes (often referenced in bugs to verify if a user has the latest packaging bugfixes). 3.1) Information about updates A simple "Update to version x.y.z" is, as before, not accepted. There should be some buzz around the update for the user; some major reasons to the upgrade should be listed. Changes on the package itself should be mentioned in a way that any other contributor to the same package can follow traces of why something is the way it is. Commonly, Added (build)dependencies are interesting to be seen, special hacks to make something work in a particular way [..]: Always consider that package maintenance is a distributed task and various contributors need to be able to step up at will. 3.2) Documenting patch life cycle The rules about patches are listed at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_Patches_guidelines . Most prominent is likely the mentioning of the patches life cycle, which forces you to mention additions and removals of patches in the changelog. As history shows, this can be helpful if a patch got removed, and later a regression is reported; finding out when a patch was removed can be crucial in reconstructing feature sets (including contacting the contributor that dropped it.. which is easily extracted from the .changes if listed) The main appeal is to the devel project maintainers / reviewers, to keep out for those rules, to live according to them, as it is frustrating for everybody if a package needs to be declined by the openSUSE Factory Review team: - The dev prj maintainer is the one getting the 'decline' (as it was usually a forwarded request), which often leaves the 'fixing' to the devel project maintainers, where the 'originator' of the fix would have been willing to actually do that... Note: The review team is not enforcing the usage of patch markup unless the package already follows this convention. 4) Teams involved, contact I mentioned two teams previously, these are the openSUSE review team (details at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:OpenSUSE_review_team) and the team taking care of the guidelines (details at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_guidelines_change_process#Team_me…) You can reach both via the openSUSE-packaging mailing list. Hi, With the release of ruby on Monday 5th of November the SUSE sponsored maintenance of openSUSE 11.4 has ended. openSUSE 11.4 is now officially discontinued and out of support by SUSE. openSUSE 11.4 was the first openSUSE distribution maintained using OpenBuildService methods (known as "OBS Maintenance"), allowing full community participation. We also migrated it from the old internal SUSE method to the OBS method on the fly during the lifetime without any interruption. openSUSE 11.4 now will be continued to be maintained by the Evergreen community team. Their wikipage is on http://en.opensuse.org/Evergreen , please check it out for more information. Here are some statistics: openSUSE 11.4 was released on March 4th 2011, making it 20 months of security and bugfix support. (2 openSUSE releases + 2 months) Some statistics on the released patches (compared to 11.3): Total updates: 723 (+142) Security: 416 (+58) Recommended: 306 (+85) Optional: 1 (-1) Quite some increase on updates, both security and bugfix wise. Some of this is due to the 2 months increased lifetime compared to openSUSE 11.3, some of this is due to a more open community bugfix involvement. [opensuse-announce] Advance SUSE support discontinuation notice for openSUSE 11.4 - Evergreen goes on!

Dear opensuse-announce subscribers and openSUSE users, SUSE Security and the openSUSE Maintenance Team announce that the SUSE sponsored security and maintenance teams will stop releasing updates for openSUSE 11.4 soon. Having provided both security and bug fixes for the last two releases and two months, we will stop releasing updates after November 5th 2012. However, the community Evergreen team plans to provide ongoing maintenance for openSUSE 11.4. More details on this will be published when they are known. As a consequence, the openSUSE 11.4 distribution directory on our server download.opensuse.org will be removed from /distribution/11.4/ to free space on our mirror sites. The 11.4 directory in the update tree /update/11.4 will follow, as soon as all updates have been published. Also the openSUSE buildservice repositories containing openSUSE 11.4 will be moved to DISCONTINUED:openSUSE:11.4 and building against openSUSE 11.4 will be disabled and removed in all buildservice projects. The discontinuation of openSUSE 11.4 enables SUSE to focus on the openSUSE distributions of a newer release dates to ensure that our users can continuously take advantage of the quality that they are used to with openSUSE products. This announcement holds true for openSUSE 11.4 only. As usual, the openSUSE project will continue to provide update packages for the following products: openSUSE 12.1 (supported until 2 months after openSUSE "Next" release, around May 2013) openSUSE 12.2 (supported until 2 months after openSUSE "Next+2" release) openSUSE Next (naming is discussed currently) (currently in development, to be released early 2013) for the next two openSUSE releases plus a two months overlap period. (As the schedule is under discussion these dates cannot be predicted exactly at this time. It will be 2 releases + 2 months usually.) Please note that the maintenance cycles of SUSE Linux Enterprise products and products based on the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system are not affected by this announcement and have longer life cycles. openSUSE is pleased to announce the first Release Candidate for openSUSE 12.2 on the ARM architecture. Since the openSUSE Conference in 2011, the openSUSE ARM team has managed to bring up openSUSE ARM from nothing to a truly usable and functional distribution on the ARM version 7 architecture. Andrew Wafaa, who continues to be heavily involved in the openSUSE-on-ARM initiative and now works for the UK CPU designer, remarks: "It was a fast and hard ride. Supporting a new architecture is always a lot of work, especially one as diverse and versatile as ARM's, but with the right tools and the right help it is possible to do it in record time!" *Hardware and device support* This release focusses on ARMv7 with the Cortex-A profile from ARM Ltd. Due to the complicated landscape of ARM devices, only a subset is supported at the moment: Texas Instruments’ OMAP3 & OMAP4, Marvell ArmadaXP 510 and Freescale I.MX51; the supported devices running with these SoCs are the Beagleboard, Beagleboard-xM, Pandaboard, Pandaboard-ES and the EfikaMX smarttop/smartbook. This week Alan Clark announced to the openSUSE Board that he is stepping down from his position as Board Chair. His duties in SUSE keep him increasingly busy and SUSE has decided, after almost two years, the time has come for someone else to take on his role. So, after thinking about what skills are most relevant for the openSUSE Board right now and who would fit in best, SUSE managers Michael Miller (Marketing and Product Management) and Ralf Flaxa (Engineering) have brought in former GNOME Foundation Chairman Vincent Untz to take on the role as chair. The Board is very pleased having someone with the skills and experience of Vincent on board! I would like to inform of the following: 1) Cinnamon has been moved to the X11:Cinnamon repository and will be normally maintained; 2) As the Cinnamon code base depends a lot on GNOME 3, to simplify things, I've opted for the following repo layout: a) X11:Cinnamon (empty repository) b) X11:Cinnamon:GNOME34 - Cinnamon releases compatible with GNOME34 code base; c) X11:Cinnamon:GNOME36 - Cinnamon releases compatible with GNOME36 code base; d) X11:Cinnamon:Factory - Cinnamon development project for openSUSE:Factory (if it happens); Users who are relying on GNOME:Cinnamon should migrate to X11:Cinnamon:GNOME34 as soon as possible, as GNOME:Cinnamon will be disabled in the nearby future. There are currently no plans of submitting Cinnamon to openSUSE:Factory since I'm not really confortable with this. If it proves to be reliable, I'll submit it. The current release available of Cinnamon is 1.5.7 (muffin 1.0.9) and it's the preview of the upcoming 1.6 series. So, if you wish to stay at 12.1 with Tumbleweed right now, I recommend NOT updating your system until you feel comfortable moving to 12.2. [opensuse-announce] openSUSE 12.2 RC2 released for testing

Today, the openSUSE project has published Release Candidate 2 of openSUSE 12.2, with a final release targetted for mid September. In the two weeks since the previous release candidate, a flurry of last minute fixes have arrived, mostly in higher level packages as the basic stack has been stabilised and locked. Read on for detailed coverage of the changes. In a late change to the layout of the release, it was decided to move many manuals and books off the DVD medium to save space. These are now part of a 'books' pattern which can be installed separately. Smaller low level fixes were made to systemd, kiwi, clicfs and udev. The kernel firmware package and PCI ID lists were updated with support for the latest hardware. GRUB2 saw fixes and a branding update for its terminal views. Mesa was updated to the latest version. Polkit privileges were relaxed slightly to allow all users to install online updates, when logged in. Several errors in PackageKit's zypp backend affecting the GNOME client were resolved. As security issues become apparent in the software versions to be shipped in 12.2 become known, fixes are proactively applied. This includes openjpeg and tiff libraries. libjpeg-turbo and libgadu received minor version updates, and crashes in libimobiledevice and gphoto2 were fixed. GPhoto2 also received the latest USB IDs for PTP cameras and devices. The base system saw some cleanups to the default filesystem package, including the removal of legacy symlinks to removable disk devices from very old versions of SUSE Linux, as well as many fixes in bind, patch updates and a security fix to bash, systemd improvements were made to autofs and rsync, the SSL feature of ntp was unbroken, and an AppArmor profile was added to colord. NetworkManager received a patch to enhance certificate checking in enterprise networks. Plymouth, the new splash screen in 12.2, had a version bump and received many minor fixes. IPv6 support was enabled in avahi. Mysql had an important bugfix that caused excessive disk usage on UPDATE queries, security fixes came to apache2, systemd support was fixed in tomcat, and postfix and kvm both saw minor version updates. YaST fixes were relatively minor: the bootloader utilities saw a few GRUB2 fixes, including support for adding failsafe kernel parameters, and the ntp tool had a couple of fixes including one that the ntp service is actually started when configured to do so. Developer platform updates came to gcc, llvm, python (2) and php5. Python 3 was updated to version 3.2.3. The intel video driver was updated to version 2.19.0, enabling new SNA and GLAMOR backends, and including many fixes to the default UXA backend. A critical bug was found and fixed that caused gnome-shell to crash after resume or suspend. lxdm, the LXDE display manager, received a bugfix preventing excessive CPU usage. A patch was added to XFCE's panel clock applet to show a calendar popup, and its netload applet was updated. KDE 3 was patched for udisks2 to properly unmount optical devices when a physical eject button is pressed. KDE 4 had a long-running mail duplication bug when using local filtering fixed, and USB sticks are now mounted with flush instead of async options, preventing an error on unmount when a long-running write is still in progress. GNOME saw many bugfixes across its packages, including inkscape, rhythmbox, Eye of Gnome, gnumeric, evolution, gnote, rednotebook, vinagre, virt-manager, texmaker, and gnome-screensaver. Gnome Shell was updated to 3.4.2 with many fixes, gtk went to version 3.4.4, and the accountsservice backend for Gnome Online Accounts also saw many improvements. Tap-to-click and disabling the touchpad while typing were set by default. Additional translated documentation was added to Gnucash. LibreOffice got a version bump, and its artwork and branding was updated to the final release versions. Finally, the translation teams have been hard at work and those have been integrated in 12.2, and the multinationalisation developers made fixes to input methods. The Open Build Service(OBS) version 2.3.0 brings new features esp. in the Maintenance and Release Management area and is the latest stable maintained version. It is recommended to update to this version to get improved security protections. It is also the first version which comes with official support offerings from our partner B1-Systems backed by SUSE. This includes * Update coordination: One or more maintenance groups can decide if and when to start or release an update. Review processes can be integrated * Release Management: Isolated build and tested updates can be released or revoked via OBS mechanism * Multiple code stream support: An issue can be handled for multiple code stream * Documentation support: The documentation of an update for the end-user is integrated This functionality is already used for doing the maintenance updates for the openSUSE distributions<. [opensuse-announce] openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 3 is released

Despite delays due to the move to a i686 desktop kernel for 32-bit systems, milestone 3 is finally available. This milestone brings progress on a number of features including GNOME 3.4, LibreOffice 3.5.2, Plymouth and more. Like the M2, there has been a bit of a delay getting this testing milestone out. Some kernel changes made it initially impossible to build the 32bit version of openSUSE but these have been fixed. Download it from software.opensuse.org/developer. As usual, a list of the most annoying bugs is being maintained and you can see the list of bugs and/or file a new one in Bugzilla. Read on for some details on the release and how to help! The roadmap aims Milestone 4 for April 26th. Factory development openSUSE, as you might know, is being developed in Factory. Factory is a project on the openSUSE Build Service against which you can build a package. If it works fine, you can submit it to Factory and keep it working there. List of build failures in Factory List of failures in Factory - help get rid of them! Status: in! Factory has now received the latest versions of GNOME 3.4, KDE SC 4.8.2 (with numerous KDE PIM bugfixes!) and finally LibreOffice 3.5.2 has landed as well. In a recent blog openSUSE contributor 'tittiatcoke' gave an update on Plymouth support in openSUSE. Plymouth itself is merged and integration into other packages is nearly finished, the issues are being worked out through some team efforts, for this milestone plymouth is not yet the default. The latest status can be tracked on this wiki page. Currently the team works on openSUSE branding to complete the new boot experience. The integration of grub2 as bootloader has seen further steps and we ask for testing of grub2. Unfortunately the LiveCDs cannot install grub2 in this milestone (see most annoying bugs for a workaround). Status: Close... We're very close to getting GCC 4.7 in - the latest status update concluded that a bug in GCC 4.7 blocks zypper from being build. This will be fixed in the 4.7.1 release expected in June but to facilitate testing a patch will probably be applied on 4.7.0 to have it in the next milestone. USRMove and tmp-on-tmpfs is still being debated, a final decision has not been made yet but it looks like we'll wait with this for at least another release. improved software search Improved software search Software search The software search improvements being tested over the last weeks have moved to software.opensuse.org and users looking for software to install on their openSUSE system can now enjoy the new UI, featuring screen shots and more extensive information about the applications available. [opensuse-announce] Open Build Service Brings Website Integration

We're proud to announce that the Open Build Service, a system to collaboratively build and easily distribute packages for a wide variety of operating systems and platforms, has introduced the ability to integrate the intelligent OBS 'download package' page into websites. This is useful for projects who want to offer their users easy access to downloads for a wide variety of Linux (and non-linux) systems. Moreover, the Open Build Service 2.3 Release Candidate is out and the final release is near. Integration in Websites The Open Build Service installation provided by openSUSE keeps growing. The number of packages is now well over 170.000, with more than 32.000 developers using build.opensuse.org either for personal use, to provide packages for one or more Linux distributions publicly or to contribute to openSUSE. Many projects depend on the public OBS or their own, internal Open Build Service to get software to their users. Right now, developers need to move the packages from OBS to a place where they are easy to download, or point users to the repository. The project page on OBS usually provides a 'download' button but this page is clearly not designed for end users. We decided to do better and now provide a download page which can be properly integrated in any website. It offers several layers of integration, starting with a convenient multi-distribution download page one can link to or an iframe which can be included in a web page; to PHP and html objects one can use to really offer deep integration. New is also the option to also provide Appliances this way so those building OS images on OBS can provide access to them directly via the same interface. In Action The full functionality including the downloading of Appliances can be seen on the openbuildservice.org website which got a major redesign. David Rosca from the Qupzilla project, who was the first external developer to integrate OBS into his website, noted that it took only minutes to implement and told us: "It saves interested users an extra click to install the application and looks better at the same time." Upcoming OBS 2.3 release Besides this new functionality which is already available on build.opensuse.org, the upcoming OBS 2.3 release comes with many new features. The 2.3 release candidate was recently made available and the final release is expected within 2-3 weeks. The main features for the 2.3 release of the Open Build Service are the introduction of full product maintenance handling in OBS, offering all the tools required for the maintanance of a full Linux distribution. A second major feature is the ability to set projects upon creation to be private, closing off source and binary access from anyone not part of the project. The 2.3 release also fixes a vulnerability for XSS attacks. Other new features including tracking of bugzilla or CVE issues, web interface improvements, API improvements and a new dispatcher improving the build times for crucial projects. COSCUP, the largest FLOSS conference organized by local communities in Taiwan, will feature a special track dedicated to KDE and openSUSE, jointly organized by these communities. The CfP team is happy to announce today that we're ready to accept your session proposals! At COSCUP 2011, several KDE and openSUSE contributors gave talks and presented ‘cool stuff’ at their booths. This year, we'll do even more! KDE and openSUSE will collaboratively organize a full two-day track at the upcoming COSCUP conference in August 2012. A CfP committee has been set up and proposals can be send in starting today. June 15 is the deadline for proposals which can be send to cfp(a)opensuse.org. Call for Papers The program committee is looking for presentations about KDE and openSUSE. Please note that the talks do NOT have to be related to both KDE and openSUSE. KDE and openSUSE happily welcome talks about KDE on other distributions or other (non) desktop technologies like GNOME or OpenStack on openSUSE. The openSUSE community is happy to announce that starting March 29 the openSUSE Summit team will accept session proposals for the openSUSE Summit. The openSUSE Summit will take place from September 21-23, 2012 in Orlando Florida at the Caribe Royale Hotel. The proposal submission period ends on June 15, 2012 at midnight EDT. Final announcement of the program will occur on or before July 23, 2012. Starting today our website on summmit.opensuse.org is online and ready to inform you about our summit! The Summit aims to continue the tradition of fun and exciting gatherings for openSUSE in the Americas. We will deliver a bi-lingual event with some sessions offered in English and some in Spanish. In good openSUSE spirit we also want to make this event as welcoming as possible by inviting other projects to participate in the Summit. =Paper submissions= We hereby invite the openSUSE and wider Free Software community to submit session proposals for the openSUSE summit.
