[opensuse-announce] openSUSE announces rename of openSUSE 12.1 milestone 6 to Beta

The openSUSE community is happy to announce that the 6th Milestone of the upcoming release will be renamed openSUSE 12.1 Beta 1. This change in name reflects the state of this milestone, being ready for more extensive testing. After the beta, 2 release candidates will become available in quick succession before the final release. To celebrate the Beta release and give it a good workout, we call out on the community to organize BetaPizza parties around the world! <h2>Release Schedule</h2> As can be found in the detailed release schedule for 12.1</a> openSUSE has a 8 month development schedule. Starting about 6 weeks after the previous openSUSE release, 6 monthly milestones followed by two Release Candidates are published for testing the upcoming openSUSE version. From the 6th milestone onwards only major/critical/blocker bug fixes are allowed and localization testing commences. Most other projects refer to this stage as 'beta testing' and the release team of openSUSE has decided to follow this naming from now on upon request of the openSUSE QA team. Release team coordinator Stephan "Coolo" Kulow notes: "the 6th milestone has sometimes gotten less testing than it deserved. We want to ensure the quality and stability of openSUSE and give users the best experience as possible. We need help from the wider community to find and fix the bugs in this release and this beta is the perfect opportunity to help out!" Lizards listen! The Zentrifuge, our conference location this year, is build in an old factory that was used for the production of washing machines (centrifuge, get it?). The bridging between technology and art is an important concern for them and thus our conference, as a technology conference, tries to cross that bridge too. Community, Friends, People! The third openSUSE Conference, osc11, kicks off on Sunday September 11, 2011 in Nuremberg, Germany. Under the motto RWX³ all Free and Open Source Software enthusiasts are invited to come together for four days to learn, hack and to have a lot of fun. The program will cover a variety topics with an emphasis on interaction between participants. The event is free of charge and open to anyone! The conference is the yearly get-together of the openSUSE community to give its people a chance to meet face to face, talk to and inspire each other. Having the chance to chat on the hallway, to quickly throw some ideas together on a whiteboard or to watch over each others shoulders while hacking can easily substitute endless chat sessions, thousand-mail threads on a mailing list and tiresome telephone calls. Being together in one room, even in this day and age, beats every other collaboration method and is what forges cohesion and friendships. That is why the openSUSE Project tries to get together this conference every year for its contributors. But not only for them, the conference is also for anyone using, working with or taking advantage of the project.
