OK people listen up... please?
Thanks! OK, just a reminder that you have less than 160 hours to
register for the openSUSE board election if you haven't done so
already.
For the mathematically challenged, 160 hours is just under
seven full days! Yes, that is how long you have left to get your
membership[0] application in to be able to vote on the upcoming board
election[1]. It is also the amount of time you have left to get your
notification of intention to run for the first community
elected Board[2].
You can only run for the board if you hold
openSUSE Membership, you can only vote for your favourite candidates if
you have openSUSE Membership. Do you see a pattern here? Good!
Also it would be good if all of the current candidates could ensure
that they have filled in their platforms on the as requested before
then. Some have already, I appreciate that people are busy, but if you
want to be on the Board (or vote for the board) you have to be prompt.
Slackers will not be tolerated! ;-)
Regards,
Andy

Hi,
I’m happy to announce that OpenOffice.org 3.0.0.3.1 packages are available in
the Build Service OpenOffice:org:UNSTABLE project. They are the first release
candidate of the OpenOffice.org 3.0 version.
We kindly ask for testing. Please, try and report bugs.
Note: They might still include bugs and are not intended for data-critical
usage. A good practice is to archive any important data before an use, ...
Where to get it:
The list of installation repositories can be found at
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#OpenOffice.org_…
Installation problems:
There are some problems with the version update on older distributions. You
might need to select the right version by hand, see
http://en.opensuse.org/OpenOffice#Dependencies_During_Update
IMPORTANT
The packages with localizations are renamed from OpenOffice_org-<lang> to
OpenOffice_org-l10n-<lang>. Also the localized help content is split into the
optional OpenOffice_org-help-<lang> packages. Finally, the American
localization is split into extra packages OpenOffice_org-l10n-en-US and
OpenOffice_org-help-en-US.
We are sorry, the 64-bit packages are not available for SLED10 and
openSUSE-10.2. You could install the 32-bit (i586) packages there.
We hope to solve the build problems within the following weeks.
Bug reports:
Please report the bugs into https://bugzilla.novell.com/ for the
product "OpenOffice_org 2.0". Do not forget to mention enough information
about the problem, see http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:OOo.
Changes in this version:
The GO-OO project changes are listed at
http://svn.gnome.org/svn/ooo-build/tags/OOO_BUILD_3_0_0_3_1/NEWS
General information about the build:
The build is based on the GO-OO project. It includes lots bug fixes, features
and optimizations in compare with the regular OpenOffice.org build:
* better startup performance
* improved VBA interoperability
* improved import filters (OOXML, WordPerfect)
* additional import filters (SVG, WordPerfect Graphics, Microsoft Works, ...)
* native KDE Open/Save dialog
* WebDAV locking
* new 3D slide transitions
* multimedia in Impress via GStreamer
* multiple formula syntax (Calc A1, Excel A1 and Excel R1C1)
* ...
, see also http://go-oo.org/discover/

The openSUSE KDE team wants to dedicate some time on KDE bugs before openSUSE
11.1 gets released, focusing on reported KDE bugs on bugzilla.novell.com
inviting the community to take part of it.
Let's stamp out bugs in KDE for openSUSE 11.1! The openSUSE KDE team is
holding a Bug Squashing event to work the KDE bugs reported in
bugzilla.novell.com. You can be a part of a bug-free KDE!
The openSUSE KDE Bug Squashing event is scheduled September 20 through
September 21 (right after openSUSE 11.1 Beta1 release), and the main goal is
to have zero bugs!
In order of priority, we have the following list:
* Find duplicated bugs, and obviously close then as DUPLICATE;
* Non openSUSE KDE bugs (KDE upstream bugs) should be:
* Reported on bugs.kde.org (if not yet);
* Added the upstream bug URL to the URL field on bugzilla.novell.com;
* Closed as UPSTREAM (resolution field).
* Filter KDE 4.0 bug reports and try to reproduce them on KDE 4.1:
* If you can't reproduce close them as WORKSFORME and leave a comment
as it was most probably fixed on KDE 4.1;
* If you still can reproduce them, try to investigate why/how that
happens (eg: step-by-step on how to reproduce) and state it's
still reproducible;
* Same as above but for KDE 4.1 - taking in consideration the quickly
development of KDE4 it's really easy that those bugs reported have been
fixed meanwhile.
* Help providing info for bugs marked as NEEDINFO
* Set priority for bugs with Priority = P5(None).
* Explore KDE3 and KDE 4.1 looking for bugs. See if KDE3 ones are fixed for
KDE4. Bug report them.
Note: Bug squashers should start from higher severity/priority bug reports to
lower ones.
To successfully achieve all these tasks, the openSUSE KDE team needs as many
people as possible. All you need to help is one (or more) of the following to
help us with debugging:
- An updated openSUSE 11.0 or openSUSE 11.1 system
- KDE 3.5.10 installed from KDE:KDE3 OBS repository
- KDE 4.1 installed from KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop OBS repository
During the event the community will be in the #opensuse-kde channel on
irc.freenode.org to help you out in whatever you might need. The openSUSE KDE
mailing list is also a great way to communicate with the KDE community.
See the openSUSE KDE Bug Squashing Days page for more and updated information

The openSUSE Project is looking for a few good leaders, and voters! As
already announced by AJ [1], the board founded the election committee
for the first openSUSE board election. The committee is now seeking
candidates and encouraging openSUSE contributors to sign up for membership.
The election committee encourages all openSUSE contributors to apply for
an openSUSE membership [2] to gain voting rights, and to consider
running for a position in the board [3]. Being a member of the first
community elected board is an unique opportunity to help the openSUSE
Project mature and grow. There are only two weeks left to get this done
- application deadline ends September 24th, 12:00 UTC. Find the full
schedule and much more information on the election wiki pages [4].
The openSUSE board leads the overall project and provides guidance and
support existing governance structures, but doesn’t direct or control
development, since community mechanisms exist to accomplish the goals of
the project. The board consists of five members, four elected by the
openSUSE members (2 Novell and 2 non-Novell) and a Novell appointed
chairman. Pascal Bleser [5] and Andreas Jaeger [6] have written some
blog posts on the first year of the board and gave some interesting
insight views on what should be done next.
This is going to be a very important year in the growth of the openSUSE
Project, and we want to start it off right. Whether you want to run for
a board seat, or just vote for the candidates you trust to do the best
job, don’t wait! The deadline for board candidacy and to have openSUSE
membership approved in time for the election is less than two weeks away!
The newly elected board members will serve for up to two years, starting
first week of November.
openSUSE membership is granted to those who have made continued and
substantial contributions to the openSUSE Project. Members are approved
by the openSUSE Board, and membership must be submitted by September
24th for members to be eligible to vote in this election.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the election committee:

After receiving a great deal of feedback on the issue of KDE 3.5
inclusion in openSUSE 11.1, the KDE team has decided to take the
following course of action.
* KDE 3.5 will be part of the DVD media for openSUSE 11.1, though we
may need to slim the package selection for 3.5 sightly.
* KDE 3.5 will not be included on the main desktop selection page, but
will be included with other desktop environments and window managers
like Xfce, WindowMaker, etc.
* This will be the last release with KDE 3.5 packages maintained by
the current KDE team. We are not opposed to continued development of
KDE 3.5 by the community, however, and would be happy to work with
contributors who are interested in packaging KDE 3.5.x for future
releases of openSUSE.
* KDE 3.5 will not be included on 11.2 "official" media or in the
release repository for 11.2, but the community certainly has the
option of creating KDE 3.5 packages in the build service, and creating
live CDs with KDE 3.5 packages for 11.2.
* The Novell KDE team will only be addressing P1 (high priority) bugs
for KDE 3.5.x from this point forward. Again, this does not preclude
community contributors from supporting KDE 3.5.x, and we encourage
them to do so.
We'd like to thank all the people who helped provide constructive
feedback while we evaluated the best course for the next release of
openSUSE. While we know that no solution is guaranteed to make every
user happy, we think that we've reached the best compromise for
openSUSE 11.1 and beyond, to ensure a smooth transition.
Now that we have a clear path, we welcome any contributors who wish to
help out. Please join the #opensuse-kde channel or speak up on the
opensuse-factory list if you have any questions about how to get
started with testing and packaging.
