Hi, cause it was a security update i just try it here. After the Update of the php4 corefiles with Yast we have *real* problems with the "simulate static" Functions of Typo3 on our Server. After the update i found a replaced php.ini, with no php.ini.rpm whatever backup. The replacement with the old php.ini dont work so i guess its a bug in the update (php4-4.3.4-43.46.3). Just my question - how can i go back to the last php Version (php4-4.3.4-43.44) until this is fixed. Luckily thats my first problem with a Update but it have to be solved very fast. tia, Michael Weber

How to make SuSEfirewall2 accept packets passing bridge-interface

Hi! I had set up a router as follows: - eth1/ ppp0 is external interface to a DSL-modem to the internet - eth0 is a ethernet-interface to internal net/ switch => everything was fine. SuSEFirewall2 set up the routing to and from the internet for the internal clients and provided some protection from the internet. Now I added a wireless-card for the router also acting as a wireless access-point: - ath0 is interface of wireless-card running in hostap-mode Then I build a bridge-interface from eth0 and ath0 and gave it the former IP of eth0. - br0 bridge made of ath0 and eth0 Routing from the wired and wireless clients to the internet works like a charm. What does not work ist bridging from physical interface eth0 to ath0 so that I can reach my server attached to the LAN-switch from my wireless notebook. I get logging-entries like that: SFW2-FWDint-DROP-DEFLT IN=br0 OUT=br0 PHYSIN=eth0 PHYSOUT=ath0 SRC=192.168.42.6 DST=192.168.42.2 Could anybody tell me what to write into /etc/sysconfig/SUSEFirewall2 or in /etc/sysconfig/scripts/SuSEfirewall2-custom to accept packets crossing my bridge. I get a segfault on every subrequest that's using PHP, e.g. PHP scripts that are included via SSI and PHP scripts that run as 404 errorpage. This variable is readonly. If one invokes a script this variable should contain the PID of the underlying bash. Just kill -9 $PPID in the of the script. problem with apache reverse proxy

Martian source... Need to have route to other networks via internal interface. What to do?

Hi! I have SLES9 and two interfaces eth0 & eth1. eth0 has real ip address like 217.x.x.x eth1 has local ip address 192.168.0.1/24 Default gateway on this system belongs to real ip address network 217.x.x.x via eth0. eth0 is described as External inteface in suse firewall. eth1 is described as Internal one. No NAT etc. Kernel security is on. LAN has several nets like 192.168.x.0/24. Accessing net like 192.168.1.0/24 i got 'martian source' kernel message. I tried to make route to 192.168.1.0/24 via 192.168.0.254 but still have same error log. Where to dig? I dont want to create aliases for each network (it works but too ugly). Is possible the pretty solution for me? Next, what you recommend as linux implementation of Cosco's EIGRP? Ciscos use EiGRP to keep routes between them using 192.168.0.254/24 net. SuSE Firewall/Router

Hello, i've configured a suse 10.0 base machine with router functionality and a proxyserver (squid). I've activated package forwarding and have two network cards. The problem is i can specify the proxy server or i couldn't - it doesn't matter!! It is important that every client have to specify the proxyserver - only over the proxy! How can I do that? Hi, I am currently dealing with the SuSEfirewall 9.3 and I hope that somebody knows more or figured out more about it then the pour documentation tries to do. I did work quiet a while on the iptables but this SuSE system really does not make a difference in terms of complexity. Sorry. Is there any better documentation about it then you can find in /usr/share/doc/packages/SuSEfirewall2 I found these two scripts e.g.: SuSEfirewall2_init SuSEfirewall2_setup Why does SuSE needs two scripts? Does SuSE plan to change main things on the firewall system in future? Since they did from version to version. Regards, Robert.

I have encountered a problem with apache2-mod_php5-5.0.3-14.13.i586.rpm on SuSE 9.3. After a quick look I could not find either portmap or telnet (both installed on the system), yet I know they are libwrap supported software. LPRng with kerberos authentication

Hi all! Management is forcing me to use LPRng with kerberos authentication in order to print my documents. Right now I'm using CUPS, with some lpr configuration. However, it seems as if the lprng rpm packet (SUSE 9.3) is not compiled with kerberos support. Can someone verify this? Is it possible to solve this situation without compiling my own lprng with kerberos support? I googled, but i couldn't find any lprng-rpm for SUSE 9.3 with kerberos. Is it the same for SUSE 10? One option is of course to upgrade if it solves this problem. Hopefully some of you can help me, otherwise I'll just have to compile my own version. Kind regards, -- Mats Folke Avd. /etc/shadow unchanged but password not valid anymore

Hi! I'm facing something like a miracle: On a SuSE 9.3 PC from time to time for some users the login is denied but the accounts are not set up with expiration nor are they disabled and the /etc/shadow is unchanged (compared with diff and md5sum with a copy of the file). In the log you get: Nov 12 22:12:34 tombombadil sshd[8677]: error: PAM: Authentication failure for bla from dslb-... Two other accounts still work every time. Hashing-algorithm for files in /etc/default/passwd is blowfish (CRYPT=des but CRYPT_FILES=blowfish). When running a passwd bla as root and defining the same password as before everything ist fine again. I ran chkrootkit (from a clean enviroment) on the machine without finding anything suspicious. A low-tech alternative: why be complicated when you don't need to? You are not running ssh at the moment. Do you send and receive e-mail while on the road? Can you/do you run a mailserver? Set up a special account and allow it to receive e-mail from anywhere, but use procmail to filter so that everything which is not sent by you and/or doesn't fit some profile of the messages containing images is discarded. patch.rpm vs .rpm in updating

Hello list, I've recently set up SuSE 10.0 on a laptop and a PC. First the laptop, I ran the online update, but chose to remove the packages after the update. Then I realised I will also need to update the PC once the installation there completes, so I downloaded the relevant ".patch.rpm"s from a mirror. I conveniently placed them into the /var/lib/YaST/you/mnt/<.....> directory so YOU could find them. Well, during the online update, it didn't, and *then* I realised it downloads the full RPM packages during the update. The following questions arise: A) why download the full RPM, from what I read, the patch RPM does the same, but to an installed package? B) I renamed the .patch.rpm's to .rpm's, and YOU actually consumed that just fine. But, referring to A), does that actually have the same effect as installing a full RPM as YOU does? I would be grateful for any pointers, thank you!

VPS & Firewall problem

Hello everyone! I've got a burning problem with my VPS running under SuSE with Plesk. Well... I've tried to configure firewall thru YaST tool and I configured sth badly cause I lost access to my server. No problem, I though cause I still could switch to Repair Mode with Plesk... so I did. But the problem is, that when I'm changing anything while under Repair Mode, after restart all changes are changing back to old/bad ones :/ I've tried to edit /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 or even delete firwall script from /init.d/ with no effect - files are returning after restart. My question is: Could someone please tell me how to turn off this damn SuSEfirewall and configure firewall in future only thru iptables ? -- greetings, Marek Mikuliszyn

privacy of environment variables

I have a question about privacy of environment variables. I was always brought up to believe that you must never store passwords or other sensitive information in environment variables, because the environment is visible to other users. This is certainly true on older Unix systems. But a colleague did some experiments (on SuSE 9.3) and found that ps only displays the environment for processes you own, which seems very sensible. Likewise /proc/pid/environ is only readable by the owner (or by root, of course). Now I don't want to rely on experiments, because there may be some other mechanism I haven't thought of. Can anyone point me to some authoritative information about the privacy of environment variables on modern Linux systems? The reason I ask is that my colleague is writing a script which will run rpcclient and smbclient. One option would be to use Expect, but environment variables are a much cleaner and simpler solution providing they are safe.
