Hello everyone,
I stumbled upon the howto:
http://en.opensuse.org/Encrypted_Root_File_System
very good work, although my questions are:
1.) Is it possible to use other forms of encryption e.g. "Twofish" or
"Serpent" instead of the described AES "Rijndael" ??
their is a description of this in the gentoo wiki (I know it isnt suse but
for reference sake)
http://gentoo-wiki.com/SECURITY_System_Encryption_DM-Crypt_with_LUKS#FAQ
does suse by default support Twofish or Serpent or does one have to first
recompile the default kernel and add the modules.
2.) has anyone done this ? Either the methods described in the howto or
used another encryption algorithm ? Any noticeable performance losses ?
3.) I have seen in the opensuse 11.0 release notes that the default install
will support encrypting the root filesystem. Is it only supporting AES or
will the User be able to choose his encryption algorithm as well as key
lengths other options etc etc.
Thank You

Hello,
my name is Peter König and I'm new to this list.
I've been using openSUSE for 3 years now and it's been the most
reliable distribution I've used so far.
I'm using openSUSE on a Dell laptop, partly for work. Disk encryption
is a must to me, especially after a colleague's laptop got stolen and
he had to deal with the consequences of identity theft and stolen work
(song blueprints).
I've had my /home partition encrypted with LUKS and so far I'm happy with it.
Recently I came across this article in the openSUSE wiki:
http://en.opensuse.org/Encrypted_Root_File_System which explains the
importance of addtional encryption of /root and /swap.
I was very happy to see that 11.0 apparently will include support of
encrypted /root partitions:
http://en.opensuse.org/Testing:Features_11.0#Support_root_on_encrypted_file…
However, as far as I know, none of these strategies support
suspending/hibernation yet, which is an important feature to me as it
makes working with a laptop much more comfortable.
Yet, I came across the feature list of Fedora 9,
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureEncryptedFilesystems
where under "Should Fix" of the Todo it lists "Suspending and resuming
using an encrypted swap partition". It references Bugzilla #247794
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=247794) with regards to a
possible solution to the problem.
My Question therefore: Are there any plans to include full disk
encryption into openSUSE? Especially with suspend/hibernate support?
Please bear with me if this is a question rather for the developer
than the security mailinglist.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hi,
I wanted to report that SWFDEC in factory is little old and contains
security bug. You can read on http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/wiki/ that
0.6.4 is a security fix release.
I guess we have to update swfdec then. Can someone make that?
(mail posted to -security and -factory)
