It has a VERY nice graphical interface and can generate rules for a variety of platforms (including iptables). It stores the rules and objects in a platform independent fashion which unfortunitely means you can't just read in your old ruleset but once you've built your new one you could easily change your firewall platform (i.e. from Linux to some form of BSD) and just re-compile the rules for whichever system you need! The Linux/etc versions are free to use. The Windows version isn't free. Check out http://www.fwbuilder.org/ I've just built rules for our new firewall with 5 network interfaces with no trouble. Taken from the homepage: links2world Firewall is a very simple tool writen in C, that helps you generate iptables rules for Linux 2.4.x and newer kernels. Released under GNU General Public License, it is very easy to configure and designed to run on hosts with one or more network interfaces. Most of the existing iptables script generators are shell scripts. You have to dig in and to look through entire script in order to customize and configure it for your needs. Furthermore, they are able to generate iptables rules for one or maximum two network interfaces. On the other hand, links2world Firewall uses a very human readable configuration file that is very easy to understand and write. Still more, it does not matter if you have one, two, three or twenty network interfaces, links2world Firewall is able to generate statefull iptables rulesets able to control the packet flows between all the networks your machine is connected to. May be of interest to anyone managing alot several NIC IF's. This attack is only possible with firewalling enabled. We would like to thank Richard Hart for reporting the problem. This problem has already been fixed in the 2.6.8 upstream Linux kernel, this update contains a backport of the fix. Products running a 2.4 kernel are not affected. Mitre has assigned the CVE ID CAN-2004-0816 for this problem. Additionaly Martin Schwidefsky of IBM found an incorrectly handled privileged instruction which can lead to a local user gaining root user privileges. This only affects the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 on the S/390 platform and has been assigned CVE ID CAN-2004-0887. Additionaly the following non-security bugs were fixed: - Two CD burning problems. - USB 2.0 stability problems under high load on SMP systems. - Several SUSE Linux Enterprise Server issues. (see the Maintenance Information Mail for more informations). 2) solution/workaround If you are not using an iptables based firewall (like SUSEfirewall2) on your system, you are not affected. If you are using a firewall, a workaround is to disable firewall logging of IP and TCP options. We recommend to update the kernel. 3) special instructions and notes SPECIAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: ============================== The following paragraphs will guide you through the installation process in a step-by-step fashion. The character sequence "****" marks the beginning of a new paragraph. In some cases, the steps outlined in a particular paragraph may or may not be applicable to your situation. Therefore, please make sure to read through all of the steps below before attempting any of these procedures. All of the commands that need to be executed are required to be run as the superuser (root). Each step relies on the steps before it to complete successfully. **** Step 1: Determine the needed kernel type Please use the following command to find the kernel type that is installed on your system: rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz Following are the possible kernel types (disregard the version and build number following the name separated by the "-" character) kernel-64k-pagesize kernel-bigsmp kernel-default kernel-smp **** Step 2: Download the package for your system Please download the kernel RPM package for your distribution with the name as indicated by Step 1. The list of all kernel rpm packages is appended below. Note: The kernel-source package does not contain a binary kernel in bootable form. Instead, it contains the sources that the binary kernel rpm packages are created from. It can be used by administrators who have decided to build their own kernel. Since the kernel-source.rpm is an installable (compiled) package that contains sources for the linux kernel, it is not the source RPM for the kernel RPM binary packages. The kernel RPM binary packages for the distributions can be found at the locations below ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/. 9.1/rpm/i586 After downloading the kernel RPM package for your system, you should verify the authenticity of the kernel rpm package using the methods as listed in section 3) of each SUSE Security Announcement. **** Step 3: Installing your kernel rpm package Install the rpm package that you have downloaded in Steps 3 or 4 with the command rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force <K_FILE.RPM> where <K_FILE.RPM> is the name of the rpm package that you downloaded. Warning: After performing this step, your system will likely not be able to boot if the following steps have not been fully followed. **** Step 4: configuring and creating the initrd The initrd is a ramdisk that is loaded into the memory of your system together with the kernel boot image by the bootloader. The kernel uses the content of this ramdisk to execute commands that must be run before the kernel can mount its actual root filesystem. It is usually used to initialize SCSI drivers or NIC drivers for diskless operation. The variable INITRD_MODULES in /etc/sysconfig/kernel determines which kernel modules will be loaded in the initrd before the kernel has mounted its actual root filesystem. The variable should contain your SCSI adapter (if any) or filesystem driver modules. With the installation of the new kernel, the initrd has to be re-packed with the update kernel modules. Please run the command mk_initrd as root to create a new init ramdisk (initrd) for your system. On SuSE Linux 8.1 and later, this is done automatically when the RPM is installed. **** Step 5: bootloader If you run a SUSE LINUX 8.x, SLES8, or SUSE LINUX 9.x system, there are two options: Depending on your software configuration, you have either the lilo bootloader or the grub bootloader installed and initialized on your system. The grub bootloader does not require any further actions to be performed after the new kernel images have been moved in place by the rpm Update command. If you have a lilo bootloader installed and initialized, then the lilo program must be run as root. Use the command grep LOADER_TYPE /etc/sysconfig/bootloader to find out which boot loader is configured. If it is lilo, then you must run the lilo command as root. If grub is listed, then your system does not require any bootloader initialization. Warning: An improperly installed bootloader may render your system unbootable. **** Step 6: reboot If all of the steps above have been successfully completed on your system, then the new kernel including the kernel modules and the initrd should be ready to boot. The system needs to be rebooted for the changes to become active. We are working on updates and will release them within the next days. cyrus-sasl - The SASL_PATH environment variable was also used to load plugins even with setuid privileges set, which can lead to a local root privilege escalation. The default SUSE installation was not found to be affected by this problem, neithertheless we are in the process of releasing updates. The CVE ID for this issue is: CAN-2004-0884 php4 - File overwrite problems were identified in php4. We have released updates for this issue. However, due to problems with php4-recode in combination with php4-mysql we had to withdraw the update from YaST2 Online Update for some SUSE Linux versions. New packages will be available soon. zinf - A tempfile race condition in zinf / freeamp was fixed, packages are available. phpMyAdmin - A bug in phpMyAdmin that would allow users to execute arbitrary commands has been discovered. New packages will be available soon. mysql - Several bugs in mysql have been discovered. New packages will be available soon. libpng - The issues with libpng described in CAN-2004-0954 and CAN-2004-0955 where already fixed in the last libpng update. Fixed packages are therefore already available on our ftp server. ______________________________________________________________________________ 6) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. Taken from the homepage: links2world Firewall is a very simple tool writen in C, that helps you generate iptables rules for Linux 2.4.x and newer kernels. Released under GNU General Public License, it is very easy to configure and designed to run on hosts with one or more network interfaces. Most of the existing iptables script generators are shell scripts. You have to dig in and to look through entire script in order to customize and configure it for your needs. Furthermore, they are able to generate iptables rules for one or maximum two network interfaces. On the other hand, links2world Firewall uses a very human readable configuration file that is very easy to understand and write. Still more, it does not matter if you have one, two, three or twenty network interfaces, links2world Firewall is able to generate statefull iptables rulesets able to control the packet flows between all the networks your machine is connected to. Configuring SuSE 9.1 as software router

hi all, I'm trying to configure my 9.1 Professional server to act as a software router. In the future I want it to be a firewall/net/proxy server also, but I'm already stumped. Two network cards (eth0, eth1) hiding behind a cable modem (ie: 192.168.1.0/24, 196.168.2.0/24, original, no?). What is the basic "dummy" setup? And what commands for checking the configuration and errors? thanks in advance. /steve

PHP sessions

I just hit the issue of a PHP program which used to run happily failing with an error at the PHP session_start() function. A spot of Googling (and the phpinfo() function) confirms that SUSE have disabled session support in their recent PHP builds. I found a thread on the issue on the SUSE-English list which quickly dissolved into a rant, but not before someone said it was a security thing. I found the same question and answer in other places, but couldn't find anything further. So, two requests for information: 1) What can I read which tells me why PHP sessions are a security problem? 2) What can I read which tells me what I need to do to make my PHP program work again?

/usr/sbin/tickeradj from SuSE 8.2 infected ?

Hello folkes, after applying the latest McAfee virusscan signature, I had to discover that VirusScan claimed /usr/sbin/tickeradj beeing infected with Linux/Rootkit-Dica.dam. Even the very latest signature 4399 came to the same result. So I tried to reinstall the xntp-package 4.1.1-261.i386.rpm with option --force. This, however didn't improve the situation. After that I installed the xntp-package from SuSE 9.0 which looks like beeing clean. I wonder if this is a false positive alert or if it is really infected. Had someone out there noticed the same behavior on his/her SuSE 8.2 machine ? Thank you very much Rainer

Ben There are several utilities on TuCows that would let you schedule automatic reboots/power downs on your problematic Windows workstation users. Look for a freeware product called "PowerDown". That might help you close that door. LDAP Problem

Hi! I have got an authorization Problem concerning ldap and Microsoft Windows 2003 AD Server. I`m absolutely new to ldap and Microsoft AD. Hi, I found, that these two files have "strange" permissions on my 9.1 system: -r-xr-xr-x root root /etc/hotplug/usb/openct -rw-r--r-- root root /etc/hotplug/tape.permissions I think, that the following file-permissions are more reliable, than the above defaults: -rwxr-xr-x root root /etc/hotplug/usb/openct -rwxr-xr-- root root /etc/hotplug/tape.permissions Is it worth to modify?! Strange FTP logins

Hello list. In LogWatch raport I found some succsessful logins to "anonymous" FTP account from different IP addresses. Security pundits have been warning about the dangers implicit with Web services for years. Enter an application I wrote called "Monkey Shell." MonkeyShell is a simple open source Python application that uses extensible markup language remote procedure calls (XML-RPC) to execute commands through a remote system shell. I kept the code terse (less than 100 lines total) so that it can be studied easily. It is similar to netcat except instead of "shell shoveling" data through a raw TCP connection, it wraps data in XML and transports it over HTTP. mysqlhotcopy broken after latest mysql upgrade

The latest security upgrade for mysql to mysql-4.0.15-67 (Suse 9.0) breaks mysqlhotcopy. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.0/rpm/i586/mysql-4.0.15-67.i586_ en.info says it fixes a vulnerability in mysqlhotcopy, but it seems to break other functionality at the same time. Since then I get the following error on all machines with a simple command like "mysqlhotcopy -u $user -p $password -q $dbname $backuppath" String found where operator expected at /usr/bin/mysqlhotcopy line 631, near "my ($fh, $tmp)=tempfile('" (Might be a runaway multi-line '' string starting on line 629) (Missing semicolon on previous line?) ipsec routing problem

Hi everyone, I have a box (SuSE 9.1) with 3 network-cards (eth0 for internal, eth1 for dmz, eth2 for internet), that is to be client to a ipsec-vpn. Problems with SuSE 9.1 - some issues aren't fixed for ages

Hello! There are several errors reguarding SuSE 9.1. I would better call them children <http://dict.leo.org/?p=14/p..&search=children>'s <http://dict.leo.org/?p=14/p..&search=s> disease <http://dict.leo.org/?p=14/p..&search=disease>. For users with much linux-practise it will not be a too big problem to solve them, for beginners it is an unsolveable issue and there are damn no support-pages on the SuSE homepage reguarding this issues. For this here are the issues I had and my olutions for this. @SuSE: Why are this well-known problems not fixed within a hotfix? 1) Issue: Coldplug uses by default kernelmodule hw_random which is unable to be loaded e.g. with intel-chipset motherboards. At bootup /etc/init.d/network starts magically SuSEfirewall, but SuSEfirewall should start right after networkinitialization as it can be found in init-scripts. With some networkcards this makes problems, sometimes cards refuse to work after a while or you get driver errors in /var/log/warn: Oct 6 06:25:01 tux-box kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out Oct 6 06:25:01 tux-box kernel: eth0: 21140 transmit timed out, status fc670045, SIA fffffff0 ffffffff 1c09fdc0 fffffec8, resetting... Unfortunately i don't like that. There is no security if there is no answering networkcard. O.K. I would call this bock hack-secure, because there is no network accessible. Hotfix: add hw_random to the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist PLZ fix this dear SuSE-Team!!! 2) Issue: Some services start and stop like they want. O.K. you say this is not security-related, but what happens if your desired service doesn't start because of this issue? Hotfix: Edit /etc/init.d/SERVICE and add the services to start before here: # Requires-Start: SERVICE(LIST)_TO_START_BEFORE yast/system/runleveleditor -> add and remove services and write config. Here you should know, what to do. The next reboot all will do fine. 3) Issue: Networkinitialization is confusing because of missing aliases to the apropriate network cards. If you are planning a firewall, router or gateway you maybe want to know which card is which and without beeing David Copperfield foreseeing which card will boot next time as eth0. SuSE 9.1 with kernel 2.6 uses eth-id instead of eth-aliases in /etc/modules.conf which is empty now (and the system will not care a lot what's inside an empty compatibility-file afaik maybe sooner or later in 9.2). If you use a managed switch with learning function or a license-server you need to have the right order assigned to the cards. If you use eth-id instead of ethx in SuSEfirewall all will work well, except a licenseserver, because as every user is evil the security-solution providers only allow bindings to eth0 for licenserver ehernet-id's. Hotfix: /etc/modprobe.conf.local alias eth0 MODULENAME alias eth1 MODULENAME1 Or using nameif and editing /etc/init.d/network (in the case of same cards) [...] case "$ACTION" in start) echo Setting up network interfaces: date +%s > $NETWORK_RUNFILE # Change begin if [ -e /etc/mactab ] ; then /bin/sleep 1 /sbin/nameif fi # Change end for IFACE in ${INTERFACE:- $LO [...] Edit /etc/mactab # # /etc/mactab # eth0 00:11:22:33:EA:A3 eth1 00:11:22:34:26:26 After the next reboot the cards have the right order as desired and setup in Yast. PLZ dear SuSE-Team fix this as well!!! 4) Issue: Some services can be started chroot, but all others are not offered to be started localhost only or bind to a specific Interface or IP. Hotfix: This binds Samba to 192.168.0.1 and the connected subnet: Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and restart samba and all related services (nmb, winbind ...) [global] [...] interfaces = 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 socket address = 192.168.0.1 bind interfaces only = yes allow hosts = 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 [...] This binds mysql to locahost and makes it inaccessbile for external attacks except local exploits from errorous scripts: /etc/init.d/mysql before: $SAFE_MYSQLD \ --user=$mysql_daemon_user \ --pid-file=$pid_file \ --socket=$socket \ --datadir=$datadir &>/dev/null & after: $SAFE_MYSQLD \ --user=$mysql_daemon_user \ --pid-file=$pid_file \ --socket=$socket \ --bind-address=127.0.0.1 \ --datadir=$datadir &>/dev/null & 6) Issue: Winbind loggs the loggs full with errors because of using winbind after installing winbind with samba 3. Hotfix: Edit /etc/securety/pam_unix2.conf before: auth: call_modules=winbind nullok account: call_modules=winbind password: md5 nullok session: none after: auth: nullok account: password: md5 nullok session: none Use different authentification within smba or edit your /etc/pam.d/samba appropriate. As default Samba uses unix-auth, but you can change this and find a better solution. 7) Issue: SSH allows root to login but imo nobody wants to have this. Hotfix: Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config and restart sshd: PermitRootLogin no 8) Issue: Limiting rights of users is not really setup secure within SuSE. Hotfix: - give www/ftp/samba-users only /bin/false - give admins /bin/bash - edit /etc/limits.conf to your needs to limit users acl's on systemlevel This should be set per default after choosing network services or serverservices packages within Yast (minimal system & no X). 9) Issue: Postfixconfiguration is a mess when using cyrus + imap + sasl-auth/smtp-auth or any other non-standard-setups. Hotfix: Drop the config and forget everything Yast and SuSEconfig is doing, instead read this: http://postfix.state-of-mind.de/patrick.koetter/smtpauth/index.html For many other issues reguarding postfix: http://www.stahl.bau.tu-bs.de/~hildeb/postfix/ 10) Errors within SuSE aren't fixed over many many distributions. There are much more children <http://dict.leo.org/?p=14/p..&search=children>'s <http://dict.leo.org/?p=14/p..&search=s> disease <http://dict.leo.org/?p=14/p..&search=disease>s in SuSE and everytime they aren't fixed, only a small remark on a support-page is written. Issue: Problem XY happens because of not enough testing SuSE's reaction: Look at the support-pages. O.K. I find a solution overytime, but isn't it more easy to implement the fixes as updates? I think you ow us this, because buying SuSE and every updated Distribution cost more, than an everage Windows distribution within their time of support. 11) Commonly used software works well, other more complex setups and their provided software works only after doing a handjob to the configs. O.K. it is easy to say this, but all bulletting boards are full of questions but less in qualified answers. This wouldn't be if there was more whise thinking within Yast and SuSEconfig. SuSEconfig always drops my handedited stuff so I disabled it by default. Linux is linux not depending on the distribution only depending on where the files are. Reguards Philippe

New packages are available on our ftp servers. ______________________________________________________________________________ 6) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. Hi list, I received the mail below just after posting to suse-security. Well, how's THAT for a scam ? Some joint giving a commercial Auto-Reply to all list postings. Or am I missing something ? Anyone else seen this ?
