Hi all, here's a bit of a step-by-step description on how to keep nimda and codered from filling your apache logs. Parts used: - SuSE 7.2 Professional - SuSEfirewall2 - iptables 1.2.3 - linux kernel 2.4.13-pre5 steps: 1. install kernel sources for a kernel >> 2.4.9, running 2.4.13- pre5 here, works fine so far 2. get the sources for iptables 1.2.3 from http://netfilter.samba.org 3. unpack sources somewhere 4. export KERNEL_DIR=$(where you put the kernel tree) 5. cd into unpacked iptables sources, there's a subdirectory named patch-o-matic there 6. apply wanted patches by running ./runme $(name.of.patch)patch for this here You'll want the string patch You can also apply other patches, like the irc-conntrack patch 7. now there's a little bug in this patch... here's a diff: --- linux/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_string.c~ Sun Oct 21 00:16:29 2001 +++ linux/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_string.c Sun Oct 21 16:54:45 2001 @@ -62,7 +62,7 @@ sk = skip[haystack[right_end - i]]; sh = shift[i]; - right_end = max(int, right_end - i + sk, right_end + sh); + right_end = max(right_end - i + sk, right_end + sh); } return NULL; 8. now, make config/menuconfig/xconfig... as usual. You can import your running kernel's config first. 9. enable the experimental stuff 10. go to networking options->netfilter, there's an option there to enable string matching; set that to M 11. compile and install kernel as usual; remember to uncomment the export INSTALL_PATH=/boot in the main makefile. 12. now build a rpm file for the new iptables stuff by installing the source rpm which comes with suse, then edit the spec file, put the iptables source in /usr/src/packages/SOURCE and rebuild. 13. now there are some small changes to the firewall config files. a) uncomment the last line in /etc/rc.config.d/firewall2.rc.config: FW_CUSTOMRULES="/etc/rc.config.d/firewall2-custom.rc.config" b) edit that file, I got the following stuff in mine: for forbidden_string in root.exe cmd.exe .ida; do iptables -I input_ext -p tcp --dport http -m string \ --string $forbidden_string -m state \ --state ESTABLISHED -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset done put that in the last supfunction defined in the custom rc file. c) change the FW_LOG setting in firewall2.rc.config from reading -log-level warning to -log-level kernel.warning 14. last: some small changes to /sbin/SuSEfirewall2 search in the script for the parts where the modules are loaded and unloaded; be sure to add ipt_string (and the other new modules you created by patching the kernel and enabling them in make config) to the modules loading/unloading code there. 15. reboot 16. if you try now to access (from outside, of course) one of the nimda or codered URLS, all you get is a 'connection reset by peer', and the request doesn't show in apache log files. btw, no guarantees, and the usual YMMV :) bye [L]

iptables config

Hi, i have got : network A with ip adress room 192.168.x.x (this side also connects to the internet) network B with ip adress room 10.x.x.x (my internal LAN) and a router with is a Linux box to connect the 2 lans via routing. So far so good, the traffic is running between the 2 networks, since i configures the routes on both networks. ------------| |------------ | | LAN A |-----------------------ROUTER---------------| LAN B | | ------------- -------------- My problem is though, i have no restrictions! I know the first few commands like : iptables -P FORWARD DROP, but i want to regulate, that WKS_A from LAN_A can communicate with WKS_1 from LAN_B but not with WKS_2 from LAN_B. Or that WKS_1 on LAN_A is allowed to use SSH ánd nothing else, but WKS_2 on LAN_A can use all tcp/ip services....... Can't make losetup mount a crypto file to the loopback device (SuSE 8.2)

I'm trying to mount a file to the loopback device but the losetup command complains about it. I'm using the command line: losetup -e twofish /dev/loop0 /root/testfile losetup asks for a password but returns: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: invalid argument when one is entered "losetup -e none" works I have tried with the standard kernel in SuSE 8.2 but also kernel 2.4.20-13 with both "loopback device support" and "Twofish encryption for loopback device" compiled into the kernel. SuSE and VSFTP

I'm having some fun with SuSE and FTP. If the firewall on the server is turned off, the client works perfectly happily. But if the firewall on the server is turned on, it won't. I have opened up both 20 and 21 TCP and UDP to a limited IP range (within my network), but it just won't have any of it. I can log in, but I can't ls or change directory. Anyone got any suggestions? iptables and mysql

Hi, I am running a mysql and http server. Now I would like to block all connections to mysql (tcp 3306). (Only connections from localhost to localhost are allowed). The http-port (tcp 80) should be reachable by everybody. So I made the following: #emty ip-table iptables --flush #accept everything from localhost to localhost iptables -A INPUT -p all -s localhost -d localhost -j ACCEPT #block mysql (tcp 3306) iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --destination-port 3306 -j REJECT Well, connections from outside are blocked, BUT: 1) nmap says tcp/3306 (mysql) filtered 2) in my xconsole (and tty10) the following warning appears: <date> <time> <my-pc> mysqld-max[1156]: warning: can't get client address: Connection reset by peer Now would like to know, why does nmap know that the port is filtered? And why does mysql notices that there was a connectionrequest, althought it was blocked? Thx Markus

Thanks for the answers so far. So NOQUEUE: [218.79.178.192] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA is nothing to worry about. However I'm very worried about the PAM-warn[19900]: user: (uid=0) -> admin [remote: ?nobody@?nowhere] messages. It looks to me as if someone already has gained root rights and made an su to "admin" (which should be impossible, because /etc/passwd as I see it doesn't contain that user). Hello list, There are some days I've configured 'phpMyAdmin' as comented in '.../phpMyAdmin/Documentation.html', and I've try it. All was working fine till the moment I've try to logout (from phpMyAdmin session): no way. From this point I was unable to run apache, not only phpMyAdmin. After trying to access my main page (pure html), in the /var/log/httpd/error.log I've: .... PHP Fatal error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line 0 PHP Fatal error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line 0 ..... I've unloaded mod_php4, then the message was: .... Wed Apr 16 18:06:08 2003] [notice] child pid 8006 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Wed Apr 16 18:54:17 2003] [notice] child pid 8011 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) ..... Somebody knows how to unlock that? On the other hand, today I've seen the last SuSE 8.1 update for glibc is 2.2.5-161, but surprisingly YOU tell me my instaled version is 2.2.5-164 (installed on 9.Apr.2003, I think via YOU because I've no .rpm file, nor .gz on my system), and now it seems this update don't exists. Somebody in SuSE knows about this?. I don't know if there are some relation between this two issues, but phpMyAdmin uses 'iconv' for translations of charsets, that is included on glibc package.... Thanks in advance (...I'll cut mine veins with the tape of the printer....)

New logging message

Hi, I have a couple of these in my logs: Apr 29 05:01:03 p15089763 PAM-warn[19900]: user: (uid=0) -> admin [remote: ?nobody@?nowhere] Apr 29 05:01:03 p15089763 server [218.79.178.192] cmd read[19900]: NOQUEUE: [218.79.178.192] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA They repeat 14 times within 2 minutes. Afterward I see just one of the above two lines: Apr 29 05:01:49 p15089763 server [218.79.178.192] cmd read[19922]: NOQUEUE: [218.79.178.192] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA They repeat 110 times within 13 minutes. What triggered these logging messages? 218.79.178.192 is the IP of an attacker. He also did an extensive port scan, tried for some httpd security holes and so on. [suse-security] Susefirewall2?

Just a quick newbie question. I have several pcs w/their default gateways set to my Susefirewall2. However, I have a couple stations that are never used to access the internet. Would it be more secure to have them use the firewall as def. gateway, or just give them a def. gateway of 0.0.0.0? They are only used locally, so never need internet access of any kind. I figured if I gave them a bogus DG it would make them very safe. Just wanted to double check, before learning the hard way. Thanks, -Trey

Setting up Kerberos

Hi, I'm in the process of setting up a small network using SuSE 8.2 pro - as this network needs the ability to scale rapidly in the future, and to be as unobstructive as possible to end users, I decided to build it round a Kerberos/LDAP authentication system. Following the instructions in the SuSE 8.2 Admin Guide, I've created a Kerberos realm named the same as my internal DNS domain, but upper case, and can obtain tickets from this using kinit on the local machine. However, I can't obtain a ticket from a remote machine, instead getting the following error: Exception: krb_error 38 Incorrect net address (38) Incorrect net address KrbException: Incorrect net address (38) at sun.security.krb5.KrbAsRep.<init>(DashoA6275:62) at sun.security.krb5.KrbAsReq.getReply(DashoA6275:308) at sun.security.krb5.KrbAsReq.getReply(DashoA6275:271) at sun.security.krb5.internal.tools.Kinit.<init>(DashoA6275:264) at sun.security.krb5.internal.tools.Kinit.main(DashoA6275:104) Caused by: KrbException: Identifier doesn't match expected value (906) at sun.security.krb5.internal.af.a(DashoA6275:129) at sun.security.krb5.internal.au.a(DashoA6275:58) at sun.security.krb5.internal.au.<init>(DashoA6275:53) at sun.security.krb5.KrbAsRep.<init>(DashoA6275:48) ... 4 more As far as I can see, everything is set up correctly in the local /etc/krb.conf. The default_realm is correct, there is a realms entry for it giving the FQDN of the Kerberos server for kdc, kpasswd_server and admin_server. I did attempt to set up Kerberos via DNS but got a message saying it couldn't identify the kdc, so it's presumably getting further than that now - I'll have another go at the DNS route once I know the basics are working. I've searched the web trying to find out what the above error actually means, and drawn a blank - can anyone enlighten me? If it's any help I can post details from the actual configuration files - this is tucked away on a private network, so there's no real risk, and I can change everything afterwards once I know how to do it. Hi All Hope this is the corect email address to use. I have a small network with windows machines behind a Linux 8.1 machine. The Linux machine connects to the internet the windows machines talk to the internet through the Linux machine. Does anyone know how to configure the Linux firewall to track and block attacks? Also I notice I get some spy ware via web sites are these imposible to block? Regards Derek

Hoi ! I´ve a mailserver running at home (for 2 clients - nothing serious), SuSE 7.2. I´ve already restrictet access by using the /etc/mail/access to 192.168 . That´s enough or should i do something more? Using SuSE 7.3/mailx 8.1.1 Release 370 I encountered a core dump while executing the mailx command. This is caused by a line with a single NUL character. Further investiga- tion revealed a) a suspicious way to read and count the charac- ters of the mbox (setptr in fio.c): : 94 for (;;) { 95 if (fgets(linebuf, LINESIZE, ibuf) == NULL) { 96 if (append(&this, mestmp)) { 97 perror("temporary file"); 98 exit(1); 99 } 100 makemessage(mestmp); 101 return; 102 } 103 count = strlen(linebuf); 104 (void) fwrite(linebuf, sizeof *linebuf, count, otf); 105 if (ferror(otf)) { 106 perror("/tmp"); 107 exit(1); 108 } : As one easily sees fgets either retured 0 (EOF/error) or a pointer to the read characters. In the case of a NUL character, there is no chance to get the real numbers of characters behind NUL (i. e. retlf). b) using a recent version of gcc (3.2.2) does not make mailx dump the core. Nonetheless the line with the NUL character does not show if you edit the message with 'v'. May somebody please comment on this issue? TIA PKM

Hello First I'm very sorry for my poor english. I have build Web site using SLES7 for s390. But the secumod package I installed can't protect procfs. In x86 machine, It protects procfs, so anybody except root could not see other's process. But in s/390 Linux, It does not operate. Please give me advice. Thanks in advance..
