Buffer overflows and a chown race condition have been discovered and fixed during the security audit. The buffer overflow vulnerabilitiy allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands as root on the system running samba. In addition to the flaws fixed in the samba server, some overflow conditions in the samba-client package have been fixed with the available update packages. It is strongly recommended to install the update packages on a system where the samba package is used. There exists no temporary workaround against this vulnerability other than shutting down the smbd daemon. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. Typically, it will not have been, because it is not easily possible to do so when using OpenSSL to provide SSL or TLS. The enclosed patch switches blinding on by default. Applications that wish to can remove the blinding with RSA_blinding_off(), but this is not generally advised. It is also possible to disable it completely by defining OPENSSL_NO_FORCE_RSA_BLINDING at compile-time. The performance impact of blinding appears to be small (a few percent). This problem affects many applications using OpenSSL, in particular, almost all SSL-enabled Apaches. You should rebuild and reinstall OpenSSL, and all affected applications. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2003-0147 to this issue. We strongly advise upgrading OpenSSL in all cases, as a precaution. Minimum package selection

Hi everybody, I am currently trying to install a secure backup file server with Suse 8.1. As I only want to install the strict MINIMUM among the packages available, I wonder if anyone has done the same before, i.e. selected a minimum set of packages which allows you to boot your box correctly and not much more. To do this I have installed the Suse minimum installation and deselected lots of packages, but I am not sure whether I can still take away some more packages..... "rpm -q -a | sort " gives me the attached list and y wonder if I can reduce further more this list. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated Lars

Firewall log and syslogd

Hi to all, I got the SuSEfirewall2 customized as I desired. But now for the logging: the messages are kept in three files: /var/log/messages /var/log/firewall /var/log/warn I banned the firewall messages from /var/log/warn in syslogd.conf with *.*;mail.none;news.none;kern.none -/var/log/messages as every kernel message is kept in /var/log/firewall with kern.* -/var/log/firewall But for /var/log/warn the entries are *.=warn;*.=err -/var/log/warn *.crit /var/log/warn How can I ban the kern.crit messages from this last log? *.crit;kern.!=crit /var/log/warn seems not to work... Hello list, can anyone explain me what this is? I found it in "Local Weekly Security"-output. This server whith SuSE 8.1 is 2 days up and nobody except me should knows about it. The following files are suid/sgid: + drwx------ 16 root root 4096 2003-03-17 00:36 . . . . The following devices were added: + drwx------ root root 4096 Mar I have seen this and I run additionaly chkrootkit with the following result. I think this is an false alert. Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 465)

Hi Fabrizio, Check your /etc/wgetrc. If you are behind a firewall you schould edit the entries for passive_ftp and the proxy-server. Else, choose a mirror. Hi, I'm using Suse 7.3 and I've recently re-installed the packages from the CDs. I tried more and more times (and using different ftp server) to update the distribution but I go on having the following error: "can get the packet <---->" And the FTP server closes the connection.
