Permissions in /etc/ssl/certs

Moin, is it correct, that others can read all pem-files in /etc/ssl/certs incl. the Private Key Sections? Is that a security hole becaus an local user can read the sections? All Files have 644 at standard in this folder. Any problems if i will make an chmod 640 /etc/ssl/certs/* ? MfG... Pierre Bernhardt

Think of the fact that machines in one subnet can't see the machines on the other subnet by means of Windows' network browsing. If you want that, you need a WINS server in each subnet, and the WINS servers have to replicate each other. Did you already try Start - Run - \\machine or Start - Run - \\IP-address? Hi to all, one question concerning samba and firewall. The firewall is on an computer with three networks cards. One to the internet, two for the intranet. I want to connect the two intranets that windows machines can share files. Which parameters do I have to set? I tried several configurations, but all of them failed :-( Dirk

squid timout webserver

Hi, I'm newbie, but if don't mind i want to ask. I have suse 8, and squid 2.4 Stable. Proxy works pretty good, but i can't open servers with my webmails (e.g. www.one.lt) I see notices like this: ERROR While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.one.lt/index.html jsessionid=caagRB_2bBHgio? (110) Connection timed out Proxy configuration: http_port 8080 icp_port 3130 cache_peer proxy.mit.lt parent 8080 3130 no-query default acl QUERY urlpath_regex bad_url no_cache allow QUERY if anyone knows about this problem, please help me. The X version affected is 4.2.0 (SuSE Linux 8.0 and 8.1). We still investigate this issue. - sendmail A correction is necessary to the last SuSE Security Announcement (SuSE-SA:2003:013) about sendmail: The Vulnerability Type must read remote buffer overflow. - apcupsd The control and management daemon for APC UPS systems is vulnerable to remote code execution due to buffer overflow and format string bugs. A dedicated advisory for this issue will be released as soon as all packages are build. - snort snort, a sensor-based Network Intrusion Detection System, was vulnerable to a buffer overflow in it's RPC preprocessor. As a workaround the following line in snort.conf should be commented out and snort should be restarted to disable the RPC-preprocessor: preprocessor rpc_decode: 111 32771 Future version of SuSE Linux will be shipped with a fixed snort package. - file A locally exploitable buffer overflow was found in the file command. New packages are currently being build and will be available soon. - zlib zlib's function gzprintf() is prone to a buffer overflow if its arguments expand to more then Z_PRINTF_BUFSIZE bytes. A fixed version of zlib will be shipped with future SuSE Linux versions. - vnc VNC (Virtual Network Computing) uses a weak cookie generation process which can be exploited by an attacker to bypass authentication. New packages are currently being tested and will be available on our FTP servers soon. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg) and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de . - SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may subscribe: suse-security(a)suse.com - general/linux/SuSE security discussion. Hi, did anybody get SASL/GSSAPI-auth. working between an Windows 2000 Server and a SuSE 8.1 client. harden_suse and dante socks

Hi, I have the following problem: On my firewall server (Linux 7.3, SuSEfirewall2), which was harded with harden_suse I want install the dante socks server. But the configure procedure brings the exit code 1 ("Cannot link ..."). Have I to do harden_suse_undo to install the new proxy on the server? Many thanks in advance. passwd & shadow

Hi list I am migrating (updgrading my server) from RH6.1 to SuSE7.3 with Postfix/IMAP, my main problem are usernames and passwords, I put my /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow to my SuSE, aan I can do shell login ok but I am having problem for my imap/pop3 users I am getting "password incorrect" for them, I am thinking that my problem is PAM or encryption method (MD5 or CRYPT) I would like to know more about SuSE with it, what is used by default?, any advice.
