The latest version of my alternative to YaST OnlineUpdate contains some important fixes: * version numbers with capital letters are compared correctly now (fixes Squid update on SuSE 8.0!!) * Option -f for installing additional RPMs works again * Version numbers with different length (KDE update 3.0 - 3.0.1) are compared correctly now If you want to do beta testing of my upcoming version 0.7.0, please visit http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/ and download it! Several security related bugs have been found in all squid packages contained in SuSE products. These bugs are being fixed in our update packages and cover modifications in the gopher client code, the FTP directory listing parser that generates HTML output, FTP protocol sanity checks concerning server address comparison between control and data connection, in the MSNT auth helper as well as in proxy authentication forwarding code. Our update packages also contain non-security relevant additions as suggested by the squid developers. The severity of the errors in the package range from harmless to critical. The gopher client bugs as well as the bug in the FTP directory parsing code are believed to be exploitable in the sense of being able to remotely execute code introduced by the attacker. The bug in the MSNT auth helper does not affect our binary packages because the feature is not activated at compile time. While Olaf Kirch (SuSE Security) has found and also fixed parts of the bugs, SuSE Security has not verified the claim about the remote exploitability to execute code, though. A brief note about the package names in the distributions: All SuSE Linux distributions contain two squid packages. The names are squid2 and squid23 for SuSE Linux 6.4 through 7.1, and squid and squid-beta for all newer distributions. The squid-beta package on SuSE Linux 8.0 is unaffected. Also, the resolver code in bind nameserver utilities is under investigation. Further news about the resolver issues is underway. - ghostscript RedHat released a security announcement concerning a problem in ghostscript, which could be exploited to gain privilege of the print server user. We are investigating whether SuSE Linux is affected. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key is placed at the toplevel directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg) and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de . - SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may subscribe: suse-security(a)suse.com - general/linux/SuSE security discussion. Inoculate IT - SLES7

Hi list: I want to know if someone have experience with the antivir InoculateIT of CA with SLES7. I am trying to install it but I am getting this error (see bellow), I was trying to jump some SO versions checking in the Ino scripts (gzipes in the package) but it not works, I see that it software its certified for SuSE 7.0 with kernel 2.2.14/16. YaST2 can remove security updates without permission

Dear All, I have reported a couple of YaST2 bugs to SuSE, and one of them has security implications that people should be aware of. I was using yast2 to install extra packages on a running system, and was having great difficulty because yast2 kept on hanging after I had made my package selection. So I used the feature (available on the Extras button) to save my configuration then loaded it on the next run. After loading the configuration yast2 took it upon itself to reinstall from CD all the packages that were already installed as well as the new ones I had requested. This was irritating, but what makes it much worse is that it *downgraded* packages which had had security updates installed. So I would warn people: when you run yast2 watch what it does and always be ready to reinstall your security updates if necessary. apache do not start after upd

Hi list, I have a strange problem with apache 1.3.19 running on SuSE7.0: After I have done the last security update from 18 June to apache 1.3.19-115 I am not able to start the webserver with the mod_ssl and/or mod_php (mod_php is for version php3). It is only possible to start the webserver with "httpd -f /etc/httpd/httpd.conf" . If I start the server with "/sbin/init.d/apache start" it seemed to be OK until I do a request to the webserver: Then I got the message in the apache-error-log: "[Mon Jul 8 18:32:50 2002] [notice] child pid 9736 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)" and nothing happens in my browser! The same thing happens if I start the server with "httpd -f /etc/httpd/httpd.conf -D SSL". If I try to start the server with the option "-D PHP" I got a message "sqlinit: DBROOT must be set !!!" But the DBROOT is set! And the server didn't start. Anybody there who had the same problem and could help me? Is it perhaps the php-modul which isn't supported anylonger? I am having a problem with ACLs denying external access to my webserver. I am unsure of where it is that I disable them. It is a default install of apache, off of a default SuSE 8 Pro. installation. I'm not sure if it's something to do with the httpd.conf, but I checked in there and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. If someone could shed a little light on this, and maybe give a few hints as to what might be wrong, it would be greatly appreciated. Again, this is a problem with ACLs denying access to apache webserver. I am new to running my own server, and am a little bit shy to go ahead and alter things regarding the access to my computer from the inet. I do apologize sincrely if this is OT but this is my last resort. Thanks in advance CBB

imapd-s setup problem.

Hello. I've a doubt about how to configure an imapd over ssl/ssh. I use Suse 7.3, and installed all the stuff (imap, ssl ... ), and configured it as the manuals told. 1st.: ¿ how can I get the imapd certificate ?. There is not any clue in the whole documentation packed with the distro !. I found a way at http://www-itg.lbl.gov/~boverhof/openssl_certs.htm but still doesn't work. 2st.: The place imapd looks to find the certificate doesn't exists (/usr/src/openssl-0.9.6/certs/); I don't know if is a "feature". I create the directory, copied the generated cert ( not sure if ok ), and .... doesn't works. ¿ any idea ? Thanks in advance. Validating SuSE PGP keys for security announcements

Good day, all I finally got around to installing and learning GPG on my system. Not that I'm apathetic about security; just that until now I've followed the practice of never e-mailing anything sensitive. I decided it was time to get this up and running just in case I ever need to do so. I was able to extract the SuSE key from an announcement on this list, and to add it to my GPG keyring. SuSE's messages now say that the signature is valid but that the key cannot be verified. So my question: How do I trace back the SuSE key to a signer, so that I can decide how far back I need to go in order to get one that I trust? I'm less concerned about this for the specific case of the SuSE announcements, which I can verify on their web site, than in the general case. Without going to a key signing party, are there other ways I can get my own GPG keys signed without violating the web-of-trust model? I'm familiar with how public key cryptography works and the implications of the web-of-trust versus central-authority models. I'm asking about specific mechanics of the "getting people together" problem, with regard to how it works in the Open Source community, rather than about concepts of the technology itself.
