promisuous or not?

I recently did a fresh install of 7.3 on this system and included all security updates from scratch. Today I decided to run chkrootkit and found that it reported that eth0 wasn't in promiscuous mode. Since I'm running snort, and see in /var/log/messages lines like "eth0 entered promiscuous mode" I was a bit worried. I ran tcpdump -i eth0 and did ifconfig and sure enough, PROMISC wasn't there. I reinstalled net-tools.rpm, but still no PROMISC. It's difficult to believe that this is the work of a hacker, since the entries are made into messages, and since the problem was still there after a reinstall of net-tools I think it would have to be a kernel problem and any kernel modification would surely remove log messages as well as proc entries I've tested it on two separate systems, both running 7.3, one running k_deflt 2.4.16 and one running k_deflt 2.4.17-69 (from mantel) Is anyone else seeing this? //Anders

SendMail 8.12.2 and Qpopper

Hi, I'm new in the mailing list and i don't consider myself as a Linux expert, but i'm willing to try. I' d like to know if anyone has tried SendMail ver. 8.12.2. We are running SendMail ver. 8.11 at the moment. Does it worth an update? We are also running Popper instead of Qpopper. In your opinion are there differences that should make us to choose Qpopper? config: 1 linux 7.3 server with Elsa MicroLink ISDN 5 win nt 1 linux server for test and development i want to permi the users of the intrant to: - navigate in inernet with squid as proxy (works just) - use their windows mail-client (pop (110) and smtp (25) via the linux server having all the same provider (the ippp-connection has the same provider like the user mail-accounts - activate a fax-server for all users (hylkafax?) - avtivate a dial-in server questions: - it's neccessary to use send/fetchmail for a mail-forwarding or can i open with iptables these ports for unfiltered input/output/forward? - how i must set the routing on the linux servers, that all users use this gateway? it's impossible to make a static gateway, because the provider gives always a dynamic ip address i'm a very beginner in routing, and all my tests changing the routing table make deasaters - just more than one time i must re-install all for make the server workig in the last state .... thanks in advance roland
