TCP/IP man pages

I am browsing the man pages to find out how to create TCP/IP connections with the socket-, connect-, bind-, listen- and accept- functions, but could not find the information I needed from the corresponding man pages. (SuSE 9.1) Could SuSE please include a reference to ip(7) and/or tcp(7) in the description of the 'protocol' argument in socket(2)? Could SuSE please resolve the conflicting information between getprotoent(3) and ip(7)/tcp(7) on how to get the protocol number? Ip(7)/tcp(7) says 'protocol' should be either 0 or the macro IPPROTO_TCP, while socket(2) says 'protocol' should be gotten from the getprotoent(3) function call (which reads /etc/protocols). I would very much like to use a header file's macro IPPROTO_TCP instead of fetching a world-constant number from /etc/protocols. And it is the macros that are documented in Steven's UNIX Network Programming :-). Could SuSE please include a reference to ip(7)/tcp(7) in the description of the 'const struct sockaddr *serv_addr' argument in connect(2)? The text "Each communications space interprets the serv_addr parameter in its own way." is not very informative. How about making a paragraph based on the following from bind(2): "The rules used in name binding vary between address families. Consult the manual entries in Section 7 for detailed information. (Sorry if this is too long for hand held chatters.) Hi, I am starting to program for X Window and Xt. I am having a few problems. I have been reading extensively several books and much internet stuff, but unfortunately most examples are 'simple' and have limited usefullness and then the authors jump straight into some other system such as Qt. I would appreciate some discussion. Distributing an appliance

I have written an application which treats a computer much like an appliance- in most cases, the application will be set to automatically start whenever the computer is turned on, and the computer will not be used for other purposes. I'm trying to figure out how I can distribute this application so that users can install it themselves. What are the legalities of taking a current SUSE distribution CD, making a few changes to it, and selling it to customers? And how do I get the phone number of someone at Novell to ask this question of? Or, perhaps someone has a suggestion for a novice-friendly distribution I could use for this purpose. Thanks. Rich

Parentheses are not simply for grouping (as you say, they create a sub-shell). You get simple grouping of a sequence of commands with {curly braces}. That kind of grouping is merely syntactic (and things like "exit" executed within them will cause the shell interpreting the script to exit. The subject of the mutt command should be in quotes. Simple question about shell scripting on SuSE 8.0

coding direction dilemma

Thanks to Synthetic Cartoonz <synthetoonz(a)bellsouth.net> for help to date. I have a direction dilemma and would like opinions. I have some excellent books, such as Douglas Young's "X Window System Programming and Applications with Xt" but it should have its title extended to include "... and with Athena and hp Widgets" This has been my problem: although it is a book on Xt it quietly throws in a command like ... XtCreateManagedWidget("rc", XwrowColWidgetClass, ...) and I spend frustrating hours trying to find an include file which contains XwrowColWidgetClass Ahhhhh! I think that I have to re-think my strategy: X11 is freely available I have Xt is freely available I have Xm motif, commercial, I do not have Xaw Athena ? I have Xw hp I do not have Qt commercial, excessive for my purposes Part of my problem has been my faith in these books. They read well, but, in spite of pretending to be books about X11 and Xt they quietly use Xaw, Xm, and Xw and I struggle to get the same code to work on my machine. Any suggestions? I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable fee for the compiler or any other tools; in fact I don't "rip off" stuff in general and don't undermine the music industry; but it is the "not knowing" which concerns me. And I really don't want to divert my time into learning the Qt system - a task in itself. I have since learnt a thousand time what I learnt at Uni, but at the moment I am flat out learning other things :-) Jerry has also made a good comment, so I'll respond to him separately. But I have encountered some who steal ideas and tout them as their own, yet won't share their ideas. If somebody out there is trying to write some code to sell, and he needs advice on mathematics, physics, engineering, statistics, engineering then just ask - I may be able to give you something. But don't anybody TELL me that I have no right to own what I build.

Desperately seeking Watcom/SSI information.

I am using the watcom compiler with SSI linker for an embedded system. I'd like to find the manuals or any documentation for this older release. Here is stripped version of output (no proprietary data) to be able to see what versions / tools are used in the build process. We would be more that happy to pay any reasonable price for old hard-copy manuals or would VERY MUCH appreciate any electronic documentation. I'd like to be able to further optimize our existing build and don't have any of the manuals left around here from that time. Thank you very much in advance. unsupported module, tainting kernel

Yes this is an old topic. I've read everything I could find including the README.SUSE file and couldn't find the straight answer to this question: How do I get rid of this message when I write a plain-vanilla "hello world" loadable module? MODULE_LICENSE is set to "GPL". I eventually want to release this module and don't want to jam a "2" into /proc/sys/kernel/unsupported. What's missing in the source code? TIA&Cheers

Read the find man page, but I will give you a quick summary of what may work. I am not sure why you want to "cd", so I'll exclude it in the example. find . -name script -exec \{} | program \; You need to escape the opening curly brace and the semi-colon so as not to confuse the shell, but that should work (you may need to escape the pipe, however, as well. The curly braces are replaced by the file found (including the path -- so you don't have to cd to it) so this should work. Thanks, Patrick

Using the XCursor lib

Hi, i am trying to write a small programm that changes the mouse cursor under X11 using the XCursor lib. My purpose it to use colour cursors (ideally read from an image file). I am playing with XCursor lib but i have no good results. Code produces different results

Dear all, I experience a strange problem with a C-Program. When I run it on different machines, sometimes it produces different results, and sometimes it doesn't. Basically, there seem to exist two different cases: a) I compiled the program at the end of January. The compiled binary was copied to different computers, and produces different results on different machines. b) I recompiled the program recently. With the _new_ binary of April, all machines calculate the same result! First ideas: 1) Yes, the code was identical for case a) and b). 2) Could it be that the hardware of my computers differs too much? This does not seem to be the case. Also, for the case b) it does not matter on which of the machines I compile before running it on all of them. 3) Could it be that some kernel update (or gcc update?) partially "broke" the compiler, and led to the results of case a) (which was compiled on a SuSE Linux 9.0 with kernel 2.4.21-99). A later kernel update possibly "repaired" this problem (case b) was compiled with SuSE Linux 9.0 with 2.4.21-xxx kernel, with xxx > 166). Also, a check with a SuSE 9.1, kernelversion 2.6.5-7.111 reproduces case b). Is the idea of problems with online-updates plausible at all? Does anyone have other ideas? Kylix 3 on SuSE 9.3 problems

I loaded SuSE 9.3 Pro on a workstation yesterday and have spent today loading Kylix 3. After adding "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 && " into the application link, Kylix does execute. However, the IDE is displayed with tiny fonts that are unreadable. Has anyone else seen this behavior and, if so, can you offer some guidance to help solve the problem? Thanks in advance. Strip out unneeded libraries

I have 50 odd utility programs that are all part of one 'system'. I currently have a make file that cascade builds each one from a higher level directory. Each program is in its own directory, and has its own makefile. Each program uses 4 (ish) of 7 libraries. Each program using a different set of 4 out of the 7l. What I'd like to do is place the list of 7 libraries in a higher make file and include them at the lower make file. However, when I build them, I currently get all 7 libraries linked in, even though the program needs only 4. Is there a way to tell gcc or ld to trim unused libraries? I did a search, and I found a -strip-dead for ld, but it doesn't seem to work. I also tried --no-whole-archive, and a -Wl switch that escapes me right now.. What C Runtime functions do you call? What Kernel Level calls do you make? Do you make use of any other Library services external to GLIBC? Pthreads programming demo

I am preparing to give a talk on pthread programming at the next BLU meeting. I have a log of good code examples and Dave Butenhof's book, Programming with POSIX Threads is an excellent resource. What I am looking for is a relatively simple demo program that uses graphics. I'm using some demos to show queing, deadlock, mutexes, attribues, Dining Philosophers, and a few other things, but it would be nice to have a simple graphic display using GTK or QT.
