Dear all, I have installed Suse 9.0 in two pcs. 1. A Pentium III with 256 MB of RAM. 2. A AMD 3200 with 1024 MB of RAM. Both have the same problem. Using top can see that used memory increases by 4-20kb every 1-2 secs and free is reduced by that amount. Further buffer size increases. Eventually all physical and swap is used and if unlucky will Hung too! Has anybody came across the same problem and if so what is set so wrong? Why buffer size increases all time ? Thank You, Savvas

Dear Kumar... thanks for you answer.... Oooo....Oooo............. it means I have to install the qt designer (for qmake and make compiler), the qtdriver for postgres an each workstation... We have 50 workstation. So I have to compile the program 50 times. Is there any other possibility? What is the meaning on the error message? executing application programmed in qt find error.

Dear my friends... I am using qt 3.2, postgres 7.2.x and SuSE 9.1. I managed to developed an application with qt for the first time (Thanks my friends...). Now I want to put the application on the user's computer. But if I execute the program, it does not run as I exepected. OK I did it : create sequence sales_salesid_seq; alter table sales alter column salesid set default nextval('sales_salesid_seq'); but a new problem comes, because the table "sales" is not empty. if the sequence counter reach a value that already exists in the table "sales" than of course comes this error message : " kv=# insert into sales (firstname) values ('baru5'); ERROR: duplicate key violates unique constraint "sales_pkey" " so now I think the only one solution is to set the starting counter for the "serial" macro, for instance to : "501" (the maximum current values of column salesid is 500). Anybody has a solution? Dear Scott... My God.... so I can not use "alter table" to define a column with int data type? Here is the detail condition: I have created a table "sales". And I forgot to define auto_increment for primary key "salesid" (int4). the table has already contented the data. I built an application with Qt. I thougt that I can define a column with auto_increment function afterall. I want my application program only has to insert "firstname", "lastname" etc. And the database server (postgres) will put the increment value into the salesid automatically. If I read your suggestion, that means...I have drop the column "salesid" and re-create the column "salesid". and it means, I will the data in the current "salesid" column. Do you have further suggestion? Trigger on Postgres for tables syncronization

Dear my friends... I am using SuSE Linux 9.1 and postgres. I am a beginner in postgres, usually I use MySQL. I have 3 tables : appointment, appointment0 and appointment1. the fields of table "appointment" are as follows: noapp* (int4):ID Number of appointment (PK) custid (int4) : Customer ID salesid (int4) : Sales ID date (date) : Date of appointment time (time) : Time of appointment todo (char(150)) : What's to do with them done (char(1)): whether done (N/Y) warned (char(1)): whether warned with prompt timestamp (timestamp) : timestamp of record "appointment0" and "appointment1" have exactly the same field names as what "appointment" has. But... 1. the population of "appointment0" and "appointment1" are the subset of "appointment" 2. what the "appointment0" has are the members of "appointment" whose "Y" as the value of fieldname "done". 3. and what "appointmnet1" has are the members of "appointment" whose "N" as the value of fieldname "done". I want if my program inserted, updated, deleted the record of "appointment" than the postgres does the syncronization to the corresponded tables (appointment0 or appointment1 or both). Is it possible to implement this strategy with trigger? But how? Where Can I find a good documentation about the trigger of postgres especially the PLPGSQL of the postgres? Anybody would be so nice to tell me the steps and the command of the triggers should be in order to implement my strategy? Please.... Please.... Can't help you with postgres.. You are on your own with that... There are several ways to get to your result. A very simplified trigger is below. You are actually talking about 3 tables. You must link the first 2 tables. I am assuming you have custid as a field on description table. If you have a large number of rows, make sure you properly tune your database. I am assuming this is a small number of rows for learning. I am reformatting your query. YaST modules and KDE control center

I have created a YaST group for a series of icons that perform related tasks. I created a group file and in YaST the group displays properly and the icons are logically contained within the group. However running kcontrol allows access to "YaST2 Modules" which does not include the newly created group but does include the individual application icons (although displayed at the top level). Is there another configuration to define the YaST2 Module groups for KDE Control Center other than: "/usr/share/applications/YaST2/groups/" Thanks, Dominic

Problems with large executables under SuSE 8.2 ....

.... I have a large, FORTRAN 77 program which I maintain for use by government clients (NASA mostly). I just (today) updates the box it is on from RH7.2 to SuSE 8.2, kernel 2.4.20-4GB. When I compile up an executable that wants about 1.3 GB of RAM, it gets killed by the kernel as soon as it starts running (signal 11, segfault). I attach some relevant particulars. I compiled under the Intel FORTRAN compiler, version 8.0.46. I upgraded primarily to get > 1 GB address space, & I don't seem to be getting it. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks in advance.

YaST licensing

Hey Stefan, I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. I'm developing a YaST UI for a commercial product that includes ycp files for the ui and perl SCR agents (that use the ycp.pm api). SuSE has GPL'd the YaST toolkit but software that utilizes the toolkit is not considered derived correct? (meaning if I write these modules then I am _not_ obligated to release them if my employer doesn't wish to). Sorry if this seems an obvious question but I can't find any licensing information in the Perl files or Yast code (other than in the RPM to say it's all released under the GPL). Thanks, Dominic

looking for advice about laptops

I've ben thinking for a long time of buying a laptop for working on my projectduring trips and overseas stays ... rather than renting desktops. Needless to say I wish to rn SuSE. Up to last year most laptops were shipped with Windows installed and vendors/makers denied any responsibility about replacing Windows with SuSE satisfactorily. Another drawback is the particular configuration I need. Basically I'm looking for at least 1GB RAM, Pentiun IV or equivalent processor at least 3.06 GHz or faster. I aslso need the wireless network and a true model for occasional dial-up connections. Last year i thought I had found a laptop with the above characteristics but a better look at its components revealed an extrmely slow access to the data bus which would result in many CPU idle cycles. During the last year laptops have evolved and maybe the current market offers even more than I need ... I havent' found any time to follow up unluckily ... recently I've been offered a laptop ECS which is to me a totally unknown brand name. My understanding is that some third parties buy the main components and then they assembly them together according to the customer's requests .. which sounds pretty convenient.. But there may be a pitfall I cannot see out of ignorance in this field. Honestly I do not know whether it's better to buy a known brand like Dell, HP, IMB, etc ... or save some money and still have a reliable laptop specially made for me by these third parties ... I'd greatly appreciate some advice Maura EM

Yast2 Sequencer performance

I have generated a simple set of forms using the Wizards module and coded it up by hand calling Wizard::SetContents and managing all the events in a single event loop. I modified the code to use the Sequencer module to utilize the ability to modularize the code and manage the wizard sequence better; however, it seemed to have a large performance reduction with the same forms. The Sequencer is nice for managing the workflow for multiple forms but it seems 3-4 times slower. Has anyone seen this? Thanks, dominic.
