Hi, ich bin - viellleicht - zukuenftiger linux user. Seit langem aergere ich mich einersetis ueber instabiles windows und astronomische Preise fuer accessibility produckte und habe andererseits auch durch einige Freunde, die Verschiedene Unix Varianten benutzen, selbst Interesse bekommen an den Moeglichkeiten, die einem dieses OS bietet. Ausserdem ist ja mit der Ankuendigung des Erscheinens von Gnome 2.0 und dem eingebundenen Screenreader Gnpernicus - wenn ich das richtig verstehe - auch fuer uns Blinde die Benutzung eines gui unter linux in erreichbare Naehe. Da ich nur Speech user bin und kaum Braille kann und auch kein Braille display beigne, hab ich bis jetzt immer von linux zurueckgescheut. Jetzt hab ich aber mit Redhat 7.2 und speakup eine speech-enabled distro wenn ich mich denn ranwagen wuerde. Und daher dann auch meine Frage: Da ja Susie meines Wissens nach noch nicht ausschliesschlich aus der Box mit Sprache laeuft und ich auch redhat mehrfach empfohlen bekommen hab, bin ich mit meiner moeglichen zukuenftigen Installation des konkurrenzproducktes und meinen vielen Fragen dazu hier auf der Suse LIste trotzdem willkommen? Ich weiss von der Existenz einer englischen Blinux liste, die soweit ich weiss, markenunabhaengig ist, aber ich haette gern eine Liste mit Leuttchen ein bisschen naeher an Zuhause wenn ich mich daran wagen sollte, di e unendlichen Welten des Linux Universums zu entdecken. Zu meiner Person noch schnell was. ich werde im naechsten Februar inzwischen schon 38. Freunde bescheinigen mir, computer nut und netaholic zu sein. ,g> Kann ich nicht objektiv beurteilen. <g> Jedenfalls stimmt's, dass ich gern viele Stunden am pc verbringe, und dies noch viel mehr, seit ichvor fast vier Jahren erblindete. (Ich bin total blind bis auf hell-dunkel.) Hab aber auch noch andere Interessen, die nur hoechstens indirekt mit dem puter zusammenhaengen. Vorstellung - Frage Zeilen von hedo

Hi Listers, ich bin neu in dieser Liste und möchte daher kurz einen Steckbrief abliefern, bevor ich mit meiner Frage ins Tehma gehe. Name = Jürgen Hippler Geb. = 23.03.67 Anstellung = Programmierer in VBA und Delphi unter Windows Screenreading = Dos: Lunar, ZT, Audiodata; Windows: Lunar, ZT, Magic, INsight, JAWS Jetzt möchte ich mich auch mit Linux/Blinux beschäftigen. Dazu wäre als erstes meine Zeile anzubringen. Ich eiss, dass diverse Zeilen bereits erkannt und unterstützt werden. Allerdings gehören die Zeilen der Firma hedo wohl nicht dazu. Da ich aber zwei solche besitze, wäre es interessant, diese anschliessen zu können. Hat jemand von Euch eine hedo-Zeile unter Blinux laufen oder kann mir jemand sagen, welche Informationen ich benötige um mir selbst einen - entschuldigt den wahrscheinlich falschen Ausdruck - "Treiber" zu schreiben. Support for the AccentPC

Dear Fellow Linux Enthusiasts, I am writing this on behalf of my blind friend. I am trying to get a speech- and Linux-based desktop installed for him. While researching the options blinux and emacspeak have both come up on several occasions. We need support for the AccentPC synthesizer card, and the Crystal Audio 42sx sound card. From what I have researched, the AccentPC card is not supported intrinsically by emacspeak. We are hoping to get some general information, and/or suggestions for this type of setup. Things we are hoping to find out: - a solution that doesn't require kernel re-compilation [if possible]. - which linux distribution would support us the best? - any type of general feedback on how to proceed would be appreciated Thanks, Cory Syvenky & Marco Migotti

Hi Liste, kurz zu meiner Person: Ich heiße Marco Kotzelnik und studiere an der TU Braunschweig Wirtschaftsinformatik. bislang habe ich für alle Arbeiten, die an der Uni anfallen, mein Windowssystem verwendet, was ich jetzt ändern möchte, da an der Uni überwiegend UNIX-Systeme verwendet werden und auch die Programmierübungen an diesen Rechnern abgenommen werden. Gestern habe ich SuSE-Linux 7.3 auf meinem Rechner installiert. Wie ihr euch denken könnt, ist die Umstellung von Windows auf Linux recht schwierig. Zunächst einmal habe ich mich mit dem Dateisystem von Linux auseinandergesetzt und muss mich noch an das ein oder andere gewöhnen. Nun meine Fragen: 1. Da - wie gesagt - meine Kenntnisse in sachen Linux "noch" recht dürftig sind, downloade ich die Dateien, die ich für die Uni brauche, zur Zeit noch von meinem Windowssystem aus dem Internet. hierbei handelt es sich zumeist um gezipte Postscript-Dateien (*.ps.gz), die von einem UNIX-System der Uni erstellt worden sind. Muss ich diese Dateien zunächst auf Diskette speichern, um sie mit Linux bearbeiten zu können, oder gibt es da auch noch andere Möglichkeiten (Zugriff von Linux auf das Windows-System)? 2. Wie gesagt, ich bin Anfänger, da können auch mal "dumme" Fragen kommen: Wie greife ich von Linux aus auf eine Diskette oder CD zu? 3. Ich verwende die 2D-Screen von Papenmeier. Gibt es dafür irgendwo eine Tastenbelegung bzw. -beschreibung? Das war zwar noch "lange" nicht alles, aber fürs erste muss es reichen! Freue mich auf eure Antworten! Gruß, Marco

Hi Leute, ich habe folgendes ausprobiert: Schreibe ich: mount iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom oder analog mount /dev/fd0 /floppy so erhalte ich jedesmal die Meldung: mount: nur "root" kann dies tun Was mache ich falsch? Gruß, marco

Help please, PCI modem for Suse in the UK?

Hello Apologies but I am very new to this and have spent the last week reading and re-reading, being pointed to one doc file or another internet site, all appearing to give me confilicting info. I am therefore, for the moment, giving up on trying to ascertain if my present internal WinModem will work on com4 on my machine, and am asking for a quick solution. Once online I can play with my old modem's possibilities or otherwise to my heart's content, but my priority is getting online in Linux. I would very much appreciate any advice on a PCI modem that will allow me to use my two physical comm ports for Braille and speech, and where I might obtain one in the UK. (I was advised by the Suse support staff to go down this road rather than looking for a USB modem, but again, if anyone has clear advice I would appreciate it). Thank you, very desperately hoping someone can help.

USB modem with Linux?

Hello I am using SuseBlinux with hardware speech synth and Braille display on com1 and 2. I only have a winmodem which uses virtual comport 4 and will therefore not work with Linux. I only have two physical comm ports on my machine. Is there any way around this? I wonder if any USB modems are supported in Linux - specifics would be helpful? I do not think software speech is fully developed yet and the Apollo2 is very responsive. Any help welcomed please. Thanks.

E-Mail and browsers

Hi. Can anybody suggest which would be the best e-mail utility to use in Suse, in a text-only system. I can probably second-guess the answer to this next question, but what about an Internet web browser? Finally, is their an FTP server with Suse that is installed in the default system, or one which I can find in the packages? Next, is there a way I can mount a FAT32 Windows partition, to make it visible to Linux? and finally, I need to map the drives on my Linux box from my Window-based machine. What's the easiest way of doing all this? Thanks in advance. Mail Configuration

Hi. Can someone point me in the right direction for configuration of mail servers? If I try typing fetchmail from the console prompt, I just get the message that no servers are defined. Presumably this is done in Yast2 is it, although I can't see where. Suse With Speech.

Hello. I have been told that SuSE supports speech synthesizers as well as Braille terminals, is this true? If so, could someone tell me how one initialises the synthesizer? I would also appreciate any documentation on the subject. Installing SuSE

Hello. I have a question regarding the installation of SuSE. Is it possible to install SuSE with the following configuration: Drive 1 contains Windows, 9x in a FAT32 partition which occupies the entire drive. Drives 2, 3 and 4 are FAT32 drives, used for data storage. Drive 5 is set aside for SuSE. I have managed to get it installed with this configuration, but I then can't find a way to boot to Linux. I followed the recommended Lilo installation, I.E., wrote the Lilo to floppy. However, when it comes to boot time, the computer refuses to boot from the floppy SuSE created. I would prefer to use a boot manager on my first drive to boot Linux, but this doesn't want to work either. The manager finds the Linux configuration ok, but says it is non-bootable. Any suggestions please, bearing in mind that I'm still new to Linux. Thanks. Hi Linuxspezialisten, hat einer von euch schon mal ausprobiert, ob sich blinux unter aix übersetzen läßt? Ich muß vielleicht bald unter AIX arbeiten und würde nun gerne wissen, ob es möglich wäre, blinux auf einer AIX-wworkstation zu betreiben. Hat da jemand erfahrungen? Vielen dank für eure Antworten. SuSE Installer

Hi. 2 Questions regarding the installer. Firstly, is there any comprehensive documentation on the installer when used in conjunction with a Braille terminal? Secondly, when I run the installer, I get no text output on my monitor when a Braille display is detected. Is this normal? I thought some kind of redirection may be going on here, but it seems strange to me if that is the case. It also has a huge disadvantage, in as much as I can't always track the installer properly with my Alva 340, and it would maybe help to have sighted help. But, since there is no text being displayed on my monitor, that isn't possible. Yast2 with Braille

Hi. I am still struggling with the Braille interface in the Yast2 installation program for SuSE. I can't seem to move around the installation dialogs properly. The keys I am trying to use are: Tab to advance to the next dialog, up/down arrow to select items in list boxes and radio buttons. Space to highlight an option in a radio button. Enter to select the next button. However, the Braille display is not tracking the changes on-screen, and parts of the display appear to be getting complete garbled. Also, is there a way to change the Braille translation table from the German 8-dot default, (which I find extremely difficult to read), to English 6-dot? I'm using an Alva-Braille ABT340. The display seems responsive enough, and is initialising reliably now. Finally, wen I boot into the installation, I'm getting some sort of message about my computer not supporting the graphical installation, and about needing a minimum of 64M of RAM for this. It also says something like as a fallback, the textual front-end will be used to guide me through the installation. Is this normal for users of Braille, or could it be that SuSE doesn't like my graphics card? Any help appreciated.
