Self DOS with xosview?

Hello! I run xosview on some machines to be informed about their status. Now with SuSE Linux 9.2 x86 I've go the prob that from time to time xosview does eat all memory available on the machine running the X-server to display the xosview-windows (my workstation). At the same time it may happen that from remote-machine A the xosview works correct, from remote-machine B it does not and from local machine it also does not work. Some time later when I switched my workstation off and on again all xosviews are running smoothly... Though it happens only from time to time it seems like some kind of race condition?! As I understand the mmap2-call it does allocate 943079424 bytes of memory (would be around 900MB). But there was a patch for xosview available because the structure of /proc changed from 2.4 to 2.6. To customize xosview I added the following to my .Xresources ! =========================================================================== ! Strange links, /usr/bin/[ ?

Hi, On my SUSE 9.1 I found two quite strange links as /dev/shm/Desktop/~Desktop -> /dev/shm/Desktop/ /var/lib/ntp/var/lib/~ntp -> ../.. I have no idea, what is the meaning to have the above stuff. Anyone could explain it please?! By the way I have an interesting '/usr/bin/[' file as well; is this strange name just an accident or it supposed to be like this? And why then this uncommon name? (The file belongs to the coreutils package and is present also in SUSE 9.2: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/professional/coreutils.html Thanks, Pelibali

Problems with gpg-agent

Hi all! I am on a SuSE 9.2 system tring to set up Kmail to use encryption as descriped on http://kmail.kde.org/kmail-pgpmime-howto.html I installed a standard KDE system via Yast, and added apt after that. Then i dist-upgraded the whole system to get KDE 3.4 among other things. authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. Firewall problem

Hi list I hope someone can help me out of the trouble (problem has become trouble) I’m in after promoting using Linux server (SuSE standard server 8). My problem is allowing multiple pptp connection from my local LAN clients to same Win server out there somewhere. My current setup does work for 1 connection Google search gave me 2 options. 1 patch the kernel and compile (bad idea because it has to be repeated for all SuSE kernel updates). 2 Let the server create pptp connection and use some advance routing using some program from sourceforge, but this fails because of some non upgradeable lib in SLSS8 (how would you anyway start and terminate it remotely) So I went for patching my kernel with latest pom and iptables. This is what I did: Patch the kernel with pptp_conntrack_nat (KERNEL_DIR and iptables dir correct) make mrproper make clonconfig make xconfig and install the patches as modules make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make install make all install for new iptables (into /usr/sbin not /usr/local/sbin which was default for iptables) No errors so far and ip_nat_proto_gre and ip_nat_pptp are not loaded (they would brake my poptop server according to Google), but ip_conntrack_proto_gre and ip_conntrack_pptp are. But now I get this error “kernel: ip_conntrack_pptp: error during exp_gre” and I still can only create 1 connection (this error is only when the new modules are loaded) Help file in pom say’s: The GRE connection is marked as RELATED to the TCP session on port 1723, so all you need is something like iptables -j ACCEPT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED iptables -j ACCEPT -d my_pptp_server -p tcp --dport 1723 -m state --state NEW I have tried to put this in the custom script but get errors (iptables command missing or something like that). I have tried to get help from netfilter list but no luck (think they run away when SuSE is mentioned), but anyway I don’t want to become an expert on iptables for one issue (still have my ordinary work to do). Hello List, which analyzer for iptables or SuSEfirewall do you use? IPTables log analyzer from http://www.gege.org/iptables/ seems to be of 2002, On http://www.iptablesrocks.org/guide/analyze.php they recommend http://www.iptablesrocks.org/downloads/iptables_logger_v0.4.tar.gz, but that needs a sql database, too - which i don't want to have on my firewall. So, sorry, there are two questions: 1) DO you know a small loganalyzer for iptables? 2) Could someone point me how to combine snmp and iptables? Shutting down my computer from KDE doesn't work - have I been compromised?

I'm running Suse 9.2 Professional and using KDE. I'm behind two firewalls, the outer one is hardware-based, the inner one running PF, Snort and Squid on OpenBSD 3.4. When trying to log out of the computer and shut down, I click on the Suse menu button and click Logout. Then, I click the button to shut down the system. This used to work fine. Lately, I've had to start doing it two times to get the system to actually shut down. Now it seems to stay up more often than it shuts down, and after the first time, I can't even get to the system shutdown button anymore. When that happens, I've been using the shutdown command in the shell to bring the system down. I should note that I have had some situations where my root partition hit 100% full, but I think this shutdown failure may have started happening before root was filled up. Hey, I just started running MythTV, and tv shows take up a lot of disk space! :-) It sounds like my system may have been compromised, or am I jumping to conclusions? If I have been compromised, does anybody know which exploit this is likely to be, or have any recovery advice? Thanks in advance, Rodney

SuSEconfig and read-only proc in 9.2

Hi all, every time after yast ran suseconfig /proc is additionally mounted *read-only* as /var/spool/postfix/proc. My question is how to get rid of this feature. Yes, this may be slightly off topic here, but at least it prevents me from running online-update (yast) and iptables things (write in proc) cronbased without umounting a filesystem first - seems to be nonsense. It concerns all of my boxes running 9.2 with postfix chrooted by yast. Unmounting /var/spool/postfix/proc does apparently not affect anything. Is there a deeper meaning in it in the end? BCWipe worked perfectly! And ironically it turns out we have a site license for bcwipe - it just never dawned on me that there was a Unix/Linux version - my group has always just used the boot floppy version (which doesn't support usb drives). The rpm installed without issue under SUSE 9.2 and a simple "bcwipe -bvmd /dev/sda" - 7 passes later (probably about six hours or so) and the drive was nicely wiped. There are usually special instructions on a Kernel update that require manual intervention when using LILO. Could YOU have installed a new kernel, without the special handling for LILO ? I have previously left YOU to operate as a CRON job and auto-update each night. So far I have not allowed any ONLINE UPDATES to the system as I test it. My system is now a basic SUSE Prof 9.1 straight from the CDs, with no updates. Any thoughts? Philip

There is nothing particularly sensitive on the drive - unless you count the annual personnel reviews of my team - other than that it's just apt/rpm/deb archives and install disk iso's for several Linux distros in use here. However the US military does require secure wiping of all hard drives before transfer, turn in, etc... just in case. You never know what someone might find useful or interesting... the term used is OPSEC (Operations Security). Windoze programs like bcwipe and eraser (http://www.dirfile.com/eraser.htm) can do the job to military specs - I was just hoping to find a SUSE based solution so I don't have to track down a windoze system I can use for a while. I'm not sure if it's the drive or the laptop but so far "dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda" has been running for about 8 hours - first pass. I may just have to fall back to a windoze solution - bcwipe only takes a few hours to make 7 passes of varying patterns. No doubt they'd have quite stringent rules and regulations for disposing of storage devices that held sensitive information. That's if you are using this drive to transfer information between work and home! In which case I'd hope it was all encrypted as well! However if it's just your own personal hard-drive (that's never held sensitive Air Force information) then running "dd i=/dev/urandom o=/dev/sda" a few times would probably do it. Having said that, I read once that hi-tech hardware data recovery devices can still retrieve "old" information from a hard-drive from its lingering magnetic imprint even AFTER its been wiped over with new data. But those devices are probably only routinely employed by foreign governments, competitors engaging in industrial esponiage and of course data retrievel specialists :)

Securely wiping external usb hard drive

List members, I'm running SUSE 9.2 Pro... can anyone recommend an app or technique for securely wiping the contents on an external usb hard drive with a single 120GB reiserfs partition? - unfortunately because of the case design - cracking the case and removing the drive so it can be connected directly to an IDE controller is not an option - fdisk'ing the drive, just wiping the partition table, reformating, etc. are not sufficient - I need an option that will make the drive's current contents reasonably unrecoverable - it's been suggested that I repeatedly do "dd i=/dev/urandom o=/dev/sda && dd i=/dev/zero o=/dev/sda" - and I will do this if necessary - but would rather not take the days that this is likely to take - it's also been suggested to use 'shred' - however, in the man pages for shred is says that because of the redundancies and protections built into the Reiser filesystem - that shed will not truely and securely wipe the files - there is a reasonable chance of recovery after shreddig files on Reiser Thanks, Eric Eric Baenen Program Manager - Scientific Network Environments General Dynamics - Advanced Information Systems Phone: 937-255-8180 FAX: 937-255-8845 2255 H Street (AFRL/HEC) Area B Bldg 248 Rm 108 Wright Patterson AFB, OH 45433

CUPS / LPR Access Control

Hello, I am trying to find where LPR / CUPS do their access control to enable the wwwrun user to print documents. As this deals with access control I believe this is the correct place to ask this question. A little background on what I am trying to accomplish. I am designing a strictly internal web based data collection and reporting system. I have a PHP script that on certain conditions will print a file to a printer. In testing I am doing su -c 'cat testdoc | lpr -Pprinter' - normal_user which works fine and su -c 'cat testdoc | lpr -Pprinter' - wwwrun which does not work at all. Looking through cups admin at http://127.0.0.1:631/ shows all the print jobs for normal users and none of the print jobs for wwwrun. Thank You. Bill Miller jrmiller(a)cbnlottery.com

ipsec with openswan (suse 9.2) daily restart necessary?

Hi List, I have several systems running various VPN software, and some are suse 9.2 with ipsec of openswan. from time to time ipsec crashes, the only obvious error line in /var/log/messages is something like: "| called while no event expired" If i add a line to my crontab that restarts ipsec daily, everything works fine. Is that necessary or a misconfiguration? Hard Drive Error

Apologies guys, I know this is the wrong list, but am unsure which list to use. I only subscribe at present to SUSE Security. Please point me in the right area. I am generating the following errors .. hdb: dma_init: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hdb: dma_init: error=0x84 {DriveStatusError BadCRC} ide: failed opcode was : unknown I get about 7 or 8 of these when transfering sustained data from the linux machine to a Windows machine using SAMBA. After these errors the linux machine freezes completely forcing a hard RESET to clear it. I have two physical hard drives hda, hdb (both 120MB Western Digital drives) configured using LVM. The LVM contains my \home directories, which contain the files I am trying to transfer. The system has run for over a year without problems. I have run the DOS based WD diagnostics on the drive and it reports no errors. Any thing you can suggest. Philip
