Hi, excellent answer.
Where is patch description file in disk. Is that bundled with fou4s or SUSE. Where can I find a template of it?
I came to run fou4s and ended up with following error message:
----------------------------

You are using ftp.gwdg.de and a business product, this will probably not work.

"rpm -q --changelog k_deflt | more" lists all changes and patches
applied to the default kernel.
The same can be used for any application
e.g. "rpm -q --changelog openssh"

--> Fou4s will update all SuSE packages that you have installed on
your system. It will not update packages which are not supported by
SuSE (unless you write your own patch description files for these
packages).
Fou4s is used to update packages that are already installed, it is
not meant for installing/uninstalling packages. Use "YaST" instead or
the "rpm -U/-I" command from the commandline.

To make it more clear for my last question, How can I find out if my SUSE box has got specific vulnerability fixed so that I should not bother to patch it.
I just installed fou4s and is reading man pages for usage help.
BTW, could this utility check patches for both application and kernel? Could it install/uninstall application.

--> I don't really understand your question. There is no standard way
of detecting a vulnerability. In general, someone out there finds a
vulnerability either by looking through the source code
(code-auditing) or by stumbling upon it when something doesn't work as
expected or desired.
Most often, the vulnerability is first released to the distributors
(like SuSE) so they can fix it before it goes public and can be
exploited.
Regarding patches: SuSE prepares updated RPM-packages which are
published on the SuSE FTP-servers. If you want to get notification
about them, subscribe to "suse-security-announce". Minor updates are
not announced but simply turn up on the FTP server.
To keep your system up-to-date, monitor the FTP-server regularly or
run YOU/fou4s regularly (at least once a week).
HTH to answer your questions,

I just performed the YaST update to pick up the latest
kernel patch. "uname -r" now reports
"2.4.21-203-default". "rpm -qa | grep kernel" shows
that I have "kernel-source-2.4.21-201" - which is what
is on the SuSE FTP site. This mismatch between binary
and source is preventing me from rebuilding my
winmodem driver. Any suggestions on how I can resolve
this?

Hello,
I encountered the same problem: I was creating some useraccounts and out of a
sudden useradd starts looping. Since then this happens reproducably even
after reboot. Also groupadd behaves the same way. Now I have to create the
accounts with vipw!
My kernel version: k_athlon-2.4.21-202
Number of users: 600+
I even deleted some unused accounts to check if I hit some magic boundary in
number of accounts. The sometimes infamous nscd is not running.
Is there any workaround/fix for this?
Ciao
Roland
PRODUCT: SuSE Linux (I386) 9.0
I have a problem opening an Xterm window on my Suse linux machine (SL) after I ssh (with X11 forwarding) to a remote machine (RM).
The display is set correctly, I see the xterm process running on the remote machine but the xterm does not pop up on my Suse linux machine (SL). In fact I lose keyboard input capabilities in the window where I typed 'xterm' and I only get it back one the connection times out.
The IMPORTANT part is that I can accomplish the same thing from a Windows machine from the same network as my SL machine via putty (win ssh client) and Exceed. That indicates that the issue is with my local SUSE setup. The last line of the verbosed ouput is identical in both cases:
"confirm x11"
except on the Suse machine my xterm window doesn't pop up, on the windows machine it does. This leads me to believe that tI have a Suse ssh (maybe X) related problem.
One other important issue: to reach to my remote machine I ssh twice:
1. Linux to remote account management machine (RAM).
2. RAM to RM ( where I finally want the xterm to run)
In all cases the displays are set correctly. I also verified the xauth -list and my display is in the output and has a magic cookie.
Please let me know if you have any ideeas about how to solve this problem. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Hi all
I've found strange problems with useradd program. Suddenly useradd stops
to work and begins to eat memory till system crash.
After some hours of experiments, I've found that I reached some strange
limit in /etc/group file. I cannot add more than 85 users to one group.
When adding 86'th user useradd stops to work, and due to strace, loops in
open("/etc/passwd", O_RDONLY) = 4
fcntl64(4, F_GETFD) = 0
fcntl64(4, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
_llseek(4, 0, [0], SEEK_CUR) = 0
fstat64(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=6105, ...}) = 0
mmap2(NULL, 6105, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, 4, 0) = 0x4036f000
_llseek(4, 6105, [6105], SEEK_SET) = 0
fstat64(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=6105, ...}) = 0
munmap(0x4036f000, 6105) = 0
close(4)
and so on.
First question - what the limit of number of users in one group? And
where I can read about this?
Second question - why useradd works so terribly? Why it eats memory? It
calls mmap2 and then munmap on the same address in a loop ....
Third question - why kernel dont kill proccess which eats all of
avaliable memory? On other systems swap pager must kill it!

1) problem description, brief discussion, solution, upgrade information
The Concurrent Versions System (CVS) offers tools which allow developers
to share and maintain large software projects.
During the analyzation of the CVS protocol and their implementation, the
SuSE Security Team discovered a flaw within the handling of pathnames.
Evil CVS servers could specify absolute pathnames during checkouts and
updates, which allows to create arbitrary files with the permissions of
the user invoking the CVS client. This could lead to a compromise of the
system.
Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its
integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement.
Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply
the update.
Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages
are being offered to install from the maintenance web.

2) Pending vulnerabilities in SUSE Distributions and Workarounds:
- neon
The neon package contained various format string vulnerabilities
which have been fixed. New packages are available on our FTP servers.
Maintained products do not contain the neon package and are therefore
not affected. (CAN-2004-0179)
- tcpdump
The tcpdump program contains a remotely exploitable denial of service
condition in its ISAKMP packet handling. New tcpdump packages are
currently being tested and will soon be available on our FTP servers.
- openssh
The scp program which is part of the openssh package allowed evil
servers to trick clients into creating arbitrary files with
permissions of the user invoking scp. New packages are available on
our FTP servers.
- kdeprint/kdelibs3
The kdeprint system called the ghostscript program without the -dSAFER
option. This has been fixed. New packages are available on our FTP
servers. The package is named "kdelibs3". Maintained products are
not affected.
- MPlayer
The mplayer program contained a buffer overflow while escaping
large URLs. This has been fixed. New MPlayer packages are currently
being tested and will be available soon on our FTP servers.
- mailman
The mailing list manager mailman can be tricked to deny service by
remote attackers. (CAN-2003-0991)
New packages are available on our FTP servers.
- sysstat
This update close two cases of insecure temporary file handling in
the isag code.
New packages are available on our FTP servers.
- apache2
This update fixes a memory leak in the mod_ssl module of apache2
(CAN-2004-0113), a possible remote DoS attack on accessing rarely
used listening ports (CAN-2004-0174), and a problem with unescaped
special characters in log files that could present a security hazard
for terminal emulators (CAN-2003-0020).
New packages are available on our FTP servers.
- emil
The emil mail filter conatins buffer overflows and format-string
bugs that can be exploited remotely if emil is used in conjunction
with procmail, sendmail and alike. (CAN-2004-0152, CAN-2004-0153)
New packages are available on our FTP servers.
______________________________________________________________________________
3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information
- Package authenticity verification:
SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over
the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important
to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be
sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing
the package. There are two verification methods that can be used
independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded
file or rpm package:
1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement.
2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package.
1) execute the command
md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm>
after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors.
Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the
announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is
cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de),
the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package.
We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the
email message containing the announcement to be modified so that
the signature does not match after transport through the mailing
list software.
Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the
announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt
and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all
md5 sums for the files are useless.
2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity
of an rpm package. Use the command
rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm>
to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the
filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course,
package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm
package file.
Prerequisites:
a) gpg is installed
b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this
key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory
~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the
signature verification (usually root). You can import the key
that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving
this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and
running the command (do "su -" to be root):
gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import
SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the
key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that
the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key
is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg)
and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de .
- SUSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may
subscribe:
suse-security(a)suse.com
- general/linux/SUSE security discussion.
All SUSE security announcements are sent to this list.
To subscribe, send an email to
<suse-security-subscribe(a)suse.com>.
