I stared with an external 56K modem, on COM2 (/dev/ttyS1). Downloads from remote machine over the net was SLOW. At least it gets you up and running though. What problems do you have with the modem? Oskar --------------------------------------------------------------- To put things breafly i am all but lost in the depths of linux. I am currently running samba on the server, it is lacated on an isolated network with test computers so that i don't mess up my good computers. I will be running with a 56k :( internet connection (after resolving my modem problems) and i am hoping to achive dial on demand over the network an well as having a logon server. i am still new to linux but am learning fast. I just took a look at the manual and i will probably be attempting to set up squid now that i know what it is. The network is running with work groups, not a domain (yet), all computers have a gatway of 192.168.1.255 netmask of 255.255.255.0 and all ip addresses begin with 192.168.1.___. Hi, Are there people around using suse systems with a grsec- patched kernel? ( http://www.grsecurity.net ). hostname problem

Hi, I have a problem whit my hostname. When ik get my IP from my ISP via DHCP then will be chechged my hostname to cust. The DNS from my IP is cust.x.xxx.adsl.cistron.nl I see in my log that dhcp chancges my reslov.conf. Why ? I dont know how to fix this problem... I only know that mysql can`t start because i dont have a host name anymore. When i do hostname -f i see dont know host (or something) When i boot whit out a inernet contection there is no problem till i make a contection. Greets Wouter

Minimum number of packages

Hi, I picked the default minimal installation option while setting up a test server but after it was all said and done I feel like I can still remove a number of packages. I figure the less I have installed the more easy to manage and safer (less vulnerable packages) the server will be. I'm using SuSE Professional 9.0 and here are the packages I deleted.. # rpm -e bc eject finger lukemftp portmap procmail rsh tcsh telnet I think portmap and rsh should not be included by default. In the case of portmap, if anyone really needs NFS then I'm assuming they're knowledgeable enough to install & enable it themselves. That being said I have a question. There are a couple more packages that I'm not sure are necessary but I don't know if removing them will break anything. I ran a script which showed that no other package depends on them cpp (The GCC Preprocessor) initviocons (Terminal initialization for the iSeries virtual console) isapnp (An ISA plug and play configuration utility) mailx (A MIME-capable Implementation of the mailx Command) sash (A stand-alone shell with built-in commands) sitar (System InformaTion at Runtime) src_vipa (Virtual Source IP address support for HA solutions) I'm guessing I definetly don't need cpp, initviocons. I don't have any ISA hardware so isapnp isn't necessary. I forward all mail to a local mail server so I don't need mailx on each computer. I don't need anything related to HA so src_vipa isn't required. Don't know about sash or sitar though. I just want to make sure that I'm not deleting anything vital for SuSE or YaST to function in a reliable fashion. Any thoughts? Regards, Avtar Gill

Hello i need some help in undstanding some things. 1 - can anyone explaime way cant i see the attachments in evolution that come from Suse.secury.com whit password??, since i have the password! 2 - i bougth a wireless PCMCIA card last week and i wont to use it in my SuSE 8.2 laptop, can anyone tell me where to find linux drivers for the card? SuSE says that the card has a realtek controller, nothing more! i apreciate any help that may come from this list! João Alvega

What is the name of this worm? I am seeing it show up everywhere yet have not seen a name attatched to it. The level of customization is amazing. If this wasn't a Linux list I would have thought this was a legit email the way it was worded. The broken grammer points to someone who does not speak English as a first language.
