TUN/TAP device driver (bad state)

Persisting problems when updating to new 2.4.18 kernel on SuSE 7.3

Hi, yesterday I also spent some hours on that kernel issue. Now I tried the workaround swapping the ext3/jdb order in INITRD_MODULES. After reenabling ext3 for the root filesystem, my system actually boots again. It also reports that / is mounted as ext3 (according to the "mount" output). But there is still a warning during startup, because / acually seems to be still ext2. And after intentionally hard-resetting the system it did not replay the journal, it just ran the lengthy fsck... Any (further) ideas? Thanks, Jan

Problems when updating to new 2.4.18 kernel on SuSE 7.3

Hello, Some ppl reported problems updating to the new kernel on SuSE 7.3. Today i did the same update on one of my boxes and run into the same trouble: After updating the kernel, the box doesn't boot anymore cause of a kernel panic due to problems with the root fs. All settings where correct, mk_initrd was done sucessfully and even lilo reported no problems. After a while i downgraded, with the same settings back to 2.4.16 and it worked without any problems. With a lot of help from the SuSE ppl, we found out what the problem is/was: the order of the modules loaded by initrd. The "default" was: INITRD_MODULES="jbd ext3" but if you change it to: INITRD_MODULES="ext3 jbd" and do the mk_initrd && lilo again, it works without problems. Actually it's unknown _why_ the order does matter in that case. On 8.1. with INITRD_MODULES="jbd ext3 ide-scsi" the update worked without such problems. Hope that helps Regards, Sven

Hi, long awaited, it's there now: The kernel updates for 7.1-8.1 are on their way to the mirrors. 8.2 already has the fix when it hits the stores. You'll find directories named kernel/2.4.18-20030324/ in each of the update directories of the 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, 8.1 distributions. The changelogs are not fully consistent, but the packages are ok and fix the known problems. 8.1 has a 2.4.19 kernel, 8.0 and below have 2.4.18. Basically, the 2.4.19 kernel from 8.1 should run with the older distributions as well, but your mileage may vary. We have had some problems when we tested the kernel packages, mostly because the first suggested fixes were incorrect. This is why it took us so long. The announcement will follow later tonight. It will be copied to the update/*/kernel/2.4.1?-20030324 directories as soon as it is published. It will contain detailed information about the commands necessary to install the updates.
