Hello, An old issue was brought up to me today and I'd like to bounce if off of you. Back in October (before I started with SuSE, there was apparently an alert sent out (SuSE-SA:2001:036/9) regarding a problem with the kernel in 7.3 with TCP SYN Cookies. It gives a workaround for it as well. I am currently running SuSE certified 2.4.16 kernel and was wanting to verify that the problem was resolved and the workaround is no longer needed. Several buffer overflows have been discovered in the OpenSSL library affecting the SSL implementation, as well as a signedness issue in the ASN.1 decoding routines. In the SSL library, various blobs of data passed from the client to the server or vice versa were being copied to local buffers without checking their size. At least one overflow in the SSLv2 server code can be exploited by an attacker to gain access to the account under which the SSL enabled service is running. The other overflows happen in the SSL client code. The impact of this bug depends on the service using SSL. When attacking the Apache HTTP server with mod_ssl enabled, the perpetrator could gain access to the account "wwwrun". Attacking other services, such as the OpenLDAP slapd server, could even give the attacker access to the system's root account. Temporary workarounds for affected services include to disable the ssl functionality where this is possible. For ssl-enabled webservers, it is possible to temporarily disable SSLv2: Edit /etc/httpd/httpd.conf and add the following line to the mod_ssl configuration group: SSLProtocols all -SSLv2 This should be considered a temporary workaround only. Since the SSL client implementation is affected as well, and due to the potential impact of the ASN.1 signedness issues, we recommend that users who do not run SSL enabled services upgrade their openssl package as well. By consequence, we recommend all users to update their openssl package. Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement. Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply the update. Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. The packages are being offered to install from the maintenance web. SPECIAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: ============================== After performing the package update, all services using the openssl libraries must be restarted for the update to become effective. This can be done by rebooting the server or by individually restarting the services in question manually. An overflow vulnerability has been found in the libpng library that may make it possible for an attacker to run arbitrary code or to crash an application that uses the libpng library if the application in question opens a png image file. We are in the process of fixing this vulnerability. - wwwoffle (World Wide Web Offline Explorer) wwwoffle fails to handle negative Content-Length values correctly. It is believed that an attacker can exploit this bug to gain remote access to the system running wwwoffle. We are working on update packages against this problem. - mod_php4-4.2* Security vulnerabilities have been found in php versions 4.2.0 and 4.2.1. SuSE systems are not affected because these systems use older versions of the php package. - The SuSE Linux 6.4 distribution has been announced to be discontinued in June. We have now moved the update directories for all architectures to the discontinued directory on our ftp server to indicate that no more updates will be made for this distribution. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. SSL, apache and SuSE7.0

Hi List, i still have SuSE7.0 running on my machine with apache and php3. Now there is the newest sec.-update for apache available at SuSE but there is no mod_ssl!! But I have to update this modul. I took a look in the section for newer SuSE-releases and there are mod_ssl-packages available! In June was a mod_ssl-package available for SuSE7.0 (which isn't there anylonger, don't know why), this isn't working with the apache-version 1.3.19-128 (only with the other version of apache: 1.3.19-115 -- but this version is also deleted from the SuSE-server) ... Short summary of my question: Where is the SSL module for the apache update to version 1.3.19-128 ? Regards Ruediger

Ensure that no inetd and according daemon are running (killall inetd ftpd ect.) Friends: We are implemented a structure of security in a company, based on Linux. The resources with those that we count are 4 servers HP tc2110, each one of which will have SuSE Linux completing diverse functions (firewall, proxy, web server, database server, etc). My idea is the following one: I want to compile the kernel "to measure" (I already made it several times for other things) according to the functions characteristic of each server, for that which I have several questions: 1) can I take out of the kernel such services as ftp, telnet, etc., without it affects me the functionality characteristic of the server? For example: I want to compile the kernel with the basic thing that specifies the transparent proxy. 2) like I can know you to work and do minimum services specify the server that will have the firewall? 3) to compile, is it necessary to answer the questions one for one? I am not able to -for example -, to modify a supposition file that contains the questions, and then that the utility characteristic of the compiler receives it as entrance parameter? Hi! After updating OpenSSL on both gateways, FreeSWAN 1.94 doesn't work at all. It worked fine before. There's no packing going through the tunnel. Need urgent help! -- CU, Christoph

Further investigation brought me to this link: http://online.securityfocus.com/archive/1/285018/2002-07-28/2002-08-03/0 OpenPKG is recommending rebuilding quite a list of packages after updating OpenSSL.
