strange server / client prob. with samba using SuSEfirewall2 /etc/hosts

Hi list! I already googled and grouped for that strange problem, so I hope to find here some answers. Since I updated to SuSE 7.3/ SuSEfirewall2 / protect from internal = yes ... Port 139 internally open, it somethimes occurs a problem connecting to the samba server (domain master) from any windows client: There is even nohting about a connection in the smb /nmb logs except if the hosts were listed in /etc/hosts. ^^^^^^ In the firewall log I've found some drops from the client ips connecting to the server (PROTO = UDP; SPT = 137), but this should nothing had to do with it? So I finally solved a part of it, but don't understand it... is this SuSEs understanding of security? Please excuse my very bad english. best regards, Vincent Kurtz

FIREWALL2 - filtering 137-139

Hi everyone, I have just downloaded and compiled the NESSUS open source scanning software to check my system for Security holes. It is recommending that I filter ports 137-139 how do I do this - I've only allowed www on external services. Hallo! Ich habe Suse 7.0, Orignal mit Apache httpd Version 1.3.12 (1.3.12 ist noch am Laufen) Gemaess der Security Seite: http://www.suse.de/de/support/download/updates/70_i386.html (Abschnitt 26. - 28. April 2001) soll man Apache (auf 1.3.19) upgraden, und auch die Apache-Module upgraden. Ich hab die Apache- und Modul-rpms vom Suse-ftp-Server runtergeladen und rpm -Fhv gemacht, den Apache aber noch nicht neu gestartet, und auch das httpd.conf noch nicht neu editiert. Wie man unten am output sieht, hat rpm zwar apache, mod_perl, mod_dav, aber nicht jserv upgegradet. FRAGE: Kann ich nun den Apache httpd (wenn ich dann das httpd.conf.rpmnew editiert und in httpd.conf umbenannt habe) trotzdem neustarten? (Auch ohne dass mod_jserv upgegradet ist?) Wie kann ich (in /etc/rc.d/apache ?) den jserv vom Starten abhalten? Ist das ueberhaupt moeglich ohne Probleme zu machen? > How secure i snmp? Not very and it's never been. V1 and V2 of the protocol lack all but the most basic forms of access control. They are easily spoofed and don't use a reliable transport mechanism, even though SNMP traps could be and are used to warn of critical events. SNMP traffic is also entirely in the clear. SNMPv3 introduces better authentication. Bottom line is that SNMP is very useful for network management, but you should think twice (at least) before employing it in or across an untrusted network. > I wanna use it for some graphocal stats (CPU, MEM, etc..), so > i have to use > it. Quoting from the CERT advisory: "...may result in denial-of-service conditions, format string vulnerabilities, and buffer overflows." We are currently reviewing the code and available fixes to ensure they all get fixed. Patches will be available as soon as possible. It is strongly recommended to filter SNMP (TCP and UDP packets with destination of port 161) traffic. - hanterm/wmtv The recently reported vulnerabilities in hanterm and wmtv do not affect SuSE installations because they are not installed setuid or setgid. - cipe We are about to prepare kernel update packages that fix a DoS problem in the kernel modules for the cipe encrypted tunneling software. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de) the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key is placed at the toplevel directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg) and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de . - SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may subscribe: suse-security(a)suse.com - general/linux/SuSE security discussion. How secure is snmp

Hello! How secure i snmp? I wanna use it for some graphocal stats (CPU, MEM, etc..), so i have to use it. I have read that u can crash snmp, but i haven found a root exploit or something like that. If it u can just crash it, then it´s not a big security deal, is it? Mario Ohnewald

Hi I'm new to this list, hope this is the place for my question. We need to control a PC in our LAN from a home office. We do that with VNC, which works fine but rather slow as windows server. To get better respons time we would like to use pc-Anywhere. Is there someone who has experiance with pc-Anywhere, SuSE73 and SuSEfirewall2? We do not get a connection through our firewall. Port 5631/5632 are forwarded to the pc-Anywhere host, similar as with VNC. Thanks for your hints Markus
