postfix - fetchmail - external smtphost hickhack

Hi list, ok, its quite off topic, but the result of security police. I've customers running email-relay via postfix with checks on body/header to reject mail with certain attachments. Incoming mail realized via fetchmail. The prob: fetchmail sends the mail to mta(postfix). That is rejecting if neccessary and so sends fetchmail the error message back to external sender. But with fetchmail-daemon(a)localhost.xxxx And this sender is then rejected by external smtp-host, cause it cant resolve the adress above. How2 give fetchmail for that purpose a special sender adress ? Read the FM, but smptname/host are not the options for this ??? Thx in advance Yours Michael Appeldorn

Paul, I spent a lot of time on Firewall2 - it seems to do the basics but if you want to switch off a little bit here and a little bit there it is not that flexible. Look at iptables here - http://www.linuxguruz.org/iptables/ it is much more flexible. I am in the process of getting up to speed with SuSE security and this list has been a great help. FW2 question...

...I am using FW_FORWARD_MASQ Is this a valid record 0/0,10.0.0.3,tcp,80 I want to allow all ips to access an internal server web server not on a DMZ Or should I use 66.x.x.x,10.0.0.3,tcp,80 to do this where 66.x.x.x is the ext ip of my firewall. Mike

Adding another IP to network card

i realise this is a bit OT but I know there are network guys on this list and I'm hoping for a quick solution. I need to temporarily host another web site on my server. I don't want to chage any DNS registrations as it's only for one day. How do I bind/associate more than one ip address with my NIC. I tried `ipconfig add xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx` and it seemed to work but it only works for local subnet conmnections. What am I missing? -- Simon Oliver

SuSE are in the process of preparing update packages for this vulnerability for administrators who have installed a kernel from one of the update directories on ftp.suse.com. The respective update will also cover the DoS problem in the kernel modules for the cipe tunnel software that we reported about earlier. We will release these new kernel packages as soon as we can assure the quality and stability that is expected from SuSE kernel packages. As a temporary workaround, we recommend to remove the kernel module in question with the following command: "rm /lib/modules/*/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/*irc*" In addition to removing the kernel module on your file system, you should make sure that the kernel module is not loaded into your running kernel. Use the command "lsmod" to view the loaded modules, and "rmmod" to remove a loaded kernel module. In doubt, reboot your server. The module (and the netfilter engine as a whole) are not used by default on SuSE Linux installations. Please note that the SuSE Linux Firewall on CD product uses a 2.2-series kernel which is not affected by this problem. - ucd-snmpd The UCD snmpd contains various security releated bugs. We are currently reviewing the code and available fixes to ensure they all get fixed. Patches will be available as soon as possible. It is strongly recommended to filter SNMP (TCP and UDP packets with destination of port 161) traffic. - mod_ssl We are currently testing update packages for the apache web server. These packages contain the mod_ssl Secure Socket Layer apache module, which is subject to a weakness (buffer overflow). The availability of the update packages is a matter of hours. The SuSE Security announcement for the apache webserver will follow very soon after the packages have been published on our ftp server. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de) the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. Some rpm- and srpm-packages haven't a signature. For Example: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/6.4/n1/bind8.rpm ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/6.4/zq1/modules-2.3.9-63.src.rpm ...(bind8, aaa_base, modules, bindutil, perl, syslogd). Why?
