Security must read books

Hello! I have just bought the book "Linux Security" by Bob Toxen, which is supposed to be really good. I have already skipped through it a little and it looks well written and easy to read/understand. Are there any similar Linux/Unix Security books out there? I know i could get a 3MB PDF file of linux network security, or whatever. It often turns out that its wasting time because its too old, simply to general or just boring to read. And i prefer to grep a cup of tea and tar myself into a yummy covered bed. ;D So what "must read" books can you recommend which are similar to Bob ToxensŽs? Cheers, Spiekey

Hello Ingo, I don't no why, but after a while I followed a hint by Togan Muftuoglu and I restart(I am this not used unfortunately.) my box. After the vmware installation I have made only a "rcvmware start". Possibly, that was not enough. Now, all works even better than accustomed. Thank you at all! M. Thanks but I was looking to only limit access from ssh. This is was was sent: in sshd_config AllowUsers user1 user2 user3 This will only allow users 1,2, and 3 access to the system using sshd. This overflow happens after the authentication phase, so only remote attackers with a valid IMAP account can exploit this bug. The author of this imapd does not offer patches for older versions but rather suggests to use the newest version available at ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/mail/imap.tar.Z Due to the habbit of the author and the little impact of this bug, we do not provide patched pre-build packages. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de) the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. VMWare and SuSEfirewall2

Hello list, I require a little bit of your help. My Router/Gateway runs with SuSE 8.1 Professional. I installed VMWare from CD. The VMWare Guest-System is W2k-Pro and within this, Overnet/Emule is installed. My Router has two network cards, one for LAN one for DSL. My home network is through the Router and SuSEfirewall masqueraded/protected. Respective a TCP/UDP Port is forwarded to the Guest-System. The NIC's from the Guestsystem are bridged to eth0, the internal nic. I think that all should work, but doesn't do it! Overnet/Emule says "Firewalled." I tried all and I am almost desperate. I have tried to dump the networktrafic on the ports on internal Nic, but nothing happened. As last, I got the idea, if I be too stupid to install a Firewall with masquerading. And so I tested the w2k environment on a real computer. Well, I am not so stupidly! All is working fine. Is this a problem with the modules from vmware network system or did I overlook something in SuSEfirewall2? Goes the traffic for vmware through pre/postrouting? Before I will install a vpn/pptp solution(which is my next idea) between host/guest-system and I retest all again, I would like to ask the list for some help or some ideas. Hi List, I'm not a kind of a Linux newbie, but i don't got much time to configure a runnin Firewall2. Is anybody out there who could help me. I got DSL at home 'n wanna masq. my internal network to the internet, maybe wanna have a vpn do a friends network. Is there anyone who could help me with that? I know that u guys don't have much time, i don't either but i don't wanna read that howto's 'n documentations. Got no time for that, have to work a lot. Hello all, I watched a strange behaviour on SuSE 8.0, when using a server with two ethernet cards and running FreeSWAN 1.98b (ipsec) The setup is as follows: - eth0 is external, with ipsec0 bound to it ("real" IP address) - eth1 is internal LAN, private address of 192.168.x.y form - no "special" firewall setup, no NAT, - any traffic is accepted (still testing ...) - routing is effective (ip_forward = 1) If I try to telnet to this machine from internal, I get a network timeout, although I see a connection attempt in iptraf on eth1. But I can connect from the ipsec-tunnel from outside to internal ip-address on telnet port without any problem ... ! (roadwarrior-laptop with dynamic ip) If I shutdown ipsec0, everything from internal works as expected. Is the traffic from internal routed to ipsec0 and only to that interface ?
