Syslog-ng contained buffer overflows in its macro expansion routines. These overflows could be triggered by remote attackers if certain configuration options were enabled. Syslog-ng is not used by default on SuSE Linux, and even if installed, the problematic options are not enabled by default. We recommend an update of the syslog-ng package nevertheless if you use syslog-ng for logging. To be sure the update takes effect you have to restart the daemon by issuing the following command as root: /etc/init.d/syslog-ng restart We would like to thank Balazs Scheidler for offering fixes for this problem. Please download the update package for your distribution and verify its integrity by the methods listed in section 3) of this announcement. Then, install the package using the command "rpm -Fhv file.rpm" to apply the update. Our maintenance customers are being notified individually. This has been fixed in the new tomcat packages. The README.SuSE file of the tomcat package contains further information regarding secure configuration of the tomcat server. To ensure a certain level of security we recommend to disable the invoker servlet. - apache (CAN-2002-0839) Prior to Apache 1.3.27, the shared memory segment containing the "score board" was writable by user "wwwrun". This meant that users able to install CGI scripts etc in a location where they will be executed by apache were able to modify the contents of this scoreboard. This can be exploited to cause apache to send the SIGUSR1 signal to arbitrary processes or arbitrarily spawn new apache children. This update package contains a patch fixing this problem. - groff Someone hyped a format string bug in pic (which is part of the groff package) already known since August 2001. Fixes have been pusblished at about the same time. The groff packages in SuSE products have the fix for this problem since SLES7 (SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, Version 7), appeared in August 2001, and all newer products. _____________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de) the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. It's a good move, that will probably do GNU/Linux a lot of good in the end, especially when previous Windows users actually get to see there's a better alternative, and a better alternative to keeping a piggy-back M$ Office. A software I use (no, an alternative doesn't exist yet) needs Windows and uses M$ Office as a kind of import interface, nothing more, and it will be very nice not having to twiddle about in Wine registry more than necessary. UDP wide open?!?!?

[suse-security] SuSEfirewall2 and MTA in a DMZ

hi... i have a problem using my two mailserver (qmail & imail) in my DMZ. Any server can receive/send mails from his clients and receive mails from other MTA. But when a client send a mail to a non-local domain (a other MTA) they'll be dropped by a 'SuSE-FW-DROP-DEFAULT' - Rule. The MTA brigns then 'Error Stack Connect' or 'MX Connect Fail' (e.g. IMail). "Hmmm... then open port 25".... right, this is done. And I can sent email to any MTA over my customers virtual domain, but the customers can't do... Now my question is... what is wrong in my SuSEfirewall2 Skript??? Where can I look for? regards Alex

hi, i want to acomplish the following and wanted to know if its possible with susefirewall2/iptables: our company network is masqueraded by a susefirewall (all private ips). i want all users behind the firewall to use my external mailserver (is virus and spam protected), no matter what mailserver they have in their outlook express settings (i.e. port 25 has to be redirected). the redirect rules of susefirewall2 allow only for redirection to a local port on the firewall, but i don't want any services on the firewall. so i want to redirect to an external ip address (public ip). can this be done (or has it already been done by someone) ? any help appreciated. alex

Hi, After more than a month of development I can announce another version of fou4s - with lots of useful new features :) For those who don't know: Fou4s (Fast OnlineUpdate for SuSE) is a replacement for slow and (officially) unautomatic YaST OnlineUpdate (YOU). Fou4s runs via cronjob to check for updates every night, download them and offer you a quick interface to install them during the day. If you forget - no problem: Fou4s will bug you with mails every day ;) Major changes for this release are * SuSE Business Product support (eMail-Server, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, etc.). Fou4s may not auto-detect your business product properly, so please look at the example config file for configuring it right! * Download of updates from the supplementary tree (XFree86, Gnome, KDE) using gpd.sh from Lars Ellenberg (included). * More 8.1 compatibility fixes (Patch description format changed again). You can get Fou4s from http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/ . Special update instructions =========================== Due to some internal changes, the config option PackageListDir is no longer necessary. Other options have been changed, added or removed as well. It would be best, if you started from a new config file (created as /etc/fou4s.conf.rpmnew during update). The cronjob has also changed (copy from /usr/share/doc/packages/fou4s/fou4s-crontab to /etc/cron.d and edit for your taste). At this place I also want to say thanks to Lars Ellenberg for his additions to fou4s (patch description generator and some other work) and Soeren Mindorf, who provided me with a SLES to test business product support. First of all, theses are toally different products. Amavis is "only" a middleware sitting between your mail server and your virus scanning software (amavis is _not_ a virus scanner!). Amavis is free. TrendMicro's InterScan VirusWall (or short ISVW) (http://www.trendmicro.com/) is an email virus scanner, and also scans HTTP and FTP traffic, too. ISVW licenses are per-user licenses. IIRC 100 Users == 5000 EUR/USD. ISVW (at least their SMTP-forwarding) is a pain IMHO, as you lose at least the IP of the mail server you receive mail from (it's always localhost). Beside this, it works well for a customer of mine which is a gay portal and gets about 100-150 viral/wormed mails every day. Personally I use amavisd, with AntiVir from H+B EDV (www.hbedv.de) trophie (http://www.vanja.com/tools/trophie/) an alternative frontend for TrendMicro's libvsapi shared library, and clamav (http://clamav.elektrapro.com/) a free scanner which uses OpenAV's (http://www.openantivirus.org) signatures, but is implemeted in C (openav is written in Java). All these in different combinations, and they all work very well. I must say that amavisd is a really outstanding piece of software, and can only recommend using it. If you don't need HTTP/FTP virus scanning, then go with amavisd + some virus scanner. Which one you chose is up to you; I have no long-term experience about how fast the OpenAV team is when it comes to new virii/worms. The OpenAV home page also has links to (at least) a squid filter which can do http/ftp scanning, and an on access scanner for samba. Hope that helped you. Thomas

cascading proxy and proxy-auth

Hi, i've following net-structure: Machine (1) (firewalled) - Gateway/Masquerading - Squid Running, cascading to "parent"-proxy (also Squid) Machine (2) - behind (1), Private Network IPs - Apache running for "Intranet" I would like to: - connect from the outer world to the Squid-Machine, using Squid-Authenticate from extern - no auth from the inner net (!!) - Squid should connect to the inner Apache-Server (2) Question: - Does Squid redirect the request to the inner net (apache), instead forwarding to the parent-proxy (DNS and Routing are OK) ? - How do i have to configure my Squid for that ? - It is easier (in conjunction with security) to only have a port-forward ? Any Comments are welcome...
