iptables question

I am running Suse 7.3 / 2.4.16 / Susefirewall2 for my cablemodem connection I was recommended mtu1472 on eth0 and add the following line: iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -j TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu If I stop the firewall and start it up again do I have to add the line above again or is this a permanent thing? what command can I use to see the iptable configuration? regards, piet

We recommend to un-install kon2. __________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SuSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SuSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SuSE in rpm packages for SuSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SuSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. The file containing the public key is placed at the top-level directory of the first CD (pubring.gpg) and at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/pubring.gpg-build.suse.de . - SuSE runs two security mailing lists to which any interested party may subscribe: suse-security(a)suse.com - general/linux/SuSE security discussion. mounting a crypto fs gives write access to root only

Hi List, I have a crypto filesystem which looks as follows in the fstab: /dev/hda6 /sec reiserfs loop,enryption=twofish,noauto,user As in http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/jsj_crypto_filesystem_mini_howto.html, /sec lists as drwx------ jochen root ... unfortunately, mounting it will overwrite these settings. After a mount and entering my password /sec will list as drwxr-xr-x root root ... and consequently deny write access to all users except root. I tried some options i was used from FAT, like uid=500 oder umask=700 but the mount will fail with the german equivalent to "wrong file sytem type, invalid options, the superblock of /dev/loop0 is damaged or there are too many mounted filesystems". Has anybody got the right set of options for me? Or am i wrong somewhere else? thanks in advance, Jochen Stärk

Chroot or not for vsftpd

Hi, I am planning to install Vsftpd (vsftpd-1.1.0-3.i386.rpm) for SuSE 7.3 running SuSE compiled kernel 2.2.19. which will allow anonymous uploads also The machine has private IP and will be behind SuSE ftp-proxy. The default looks it needs to be run from inetd /xinetd. Here is what I have in mind a) run it as standalone b) use Marc Heuse's compartment to run it in a chroot environment c) use the ftpdir package of SuSE which is also in the chrooted environment where vsftd runs First of all is this overkill ? If not then I do not understand the following 1) The ftpdir package has passwd file (/usr/local/ftp/etc) root:x:0:0:Super User:/root:/bin/bash My understanding is it is now chrooted to "/usr/local/ftp" and since there is no "bash" under the bin directory what is the reasoning behind it. network connections

hi to all, i just set a server with 8.1 pro. i have some problems with the network connection. the computer has two ethernet cards and an isdn card. one ethernet card goes straight up to the internal etwork, the other one is used for pppoe (default gw) and the isdn card is used for routing to specific servers. when booting and setting up the network devices i get the following messages: setting up network interfaces lo eth0 192.168.120.1/255.255.255.0 eth1 192.168.0.99/255.255.255.0 ippp0 dsl0 error: connection to smpppd failed (use --verbose for more information) ifup-dsl: interface dsl0 is not known by smpppd failed and (due to this, i think): starting firewall /sbin/SuSEfirewall2 line 687: test 192.168.120.22. integer expression expected iptables v1.2.7a: host/network 'ippp0' not found after booting can fix this with the following three lines: /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifdown-ippp ippp0 /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifup-dsl dsl0 /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifup-ippp ippp0 another thing is that the computer looses the routing information from /etc/sysconfig/network/routes when the ippp0-connection gets closed. with /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifup-route ippp0 the routing gets the state it should have. what went wrong with 8.1? -- Dirk Borchers ----------------------------------------------------- WebMen Internet GmbH Am Wall 196 - 28195 Bremen Tel.: (0421) 24 34 9-40 - Fax: (0421) 24 34 9-41 E-Mail: dirk.borchers(a)webmen.de -----------------------------------------------------

As far as I know then (as I have the same, only my webserver is on the Gateway itself (home network)), the mail from Andreas Mueller could help you out! FW_FORWARD_MASQ="0/0,10.3.1.34,tcp,5678,80" meaning indeed : source ip, destination ip, protocol, source port, destination port What you should definitly do is open port 5678 on FW_SERVICES_EXT_TCP, otherwise the firewall won't allow clients to connect. And you can get rid of port 80 on EXT because you use the other port for it. FW_SERVICES_EXT_TCP="25 53 5678" as for opening port 80 on the gateway on FW_SERVICES_INT_TCP ... If you run a webserver on it , you can leave it open else close it as this is an open port doing nothing ;) (meaning if you want security to be high : close everything you don't need) If LAN users connect to your webserver the routing tables on the network know they don't have to go over the gateway so it will find the webserver anywayz ... Hi, i try to get the official Suse secutity update of KDE. Two weeks ago there was a security advisory for KGhostView (http://www.kde.org/info/security/advisory-20021008-1.txt) I tried to use YOU to get KDE3.0.4 but at least for Suse 8.1 I could not find the update (within YOU). But there *are* KDE3.0.4 RPMs at ftp.suse.com/[...]/update/8.1/rpm/i586. Why don't they show up within YOU? Are they not yet ready or will they get replaced within the next few days? Or maybe am I save with my KDE3.0.3 Suse 8.1 standard installation? Thanks in advance, Matthias

The destination port is the port 21 of the ftp server, and the source port is e.g. port 1234 of your computer. So the answer packet from the ftp server has source port 21, and the destination port is the port 1234 of your computer. Do you want the firewall to drop this packet?
